Blaze Preview: Aggressive or Toned Down? What You Can Expect During Tonight’s State of the Union Speech

After articulating a decidedly progressive vision in his inaugural address last month, the question is whether President Obama will double down with an aggressive State of the Union Address on Tuesday or take a milder approach.
Expect an “aggressive” speech, Politico reports: “Privately, administration officials see it as an extension of Obama’s unabashedly provocative and progressive Jan. 21 inaugural address, their latest attempt to leverage favorable deals on the sequester and the debt ceiling comparable to the watershed deal Obama secured on increasing taxes on the wealthy.”
Eleanor Clift, contributing editor at The Daily Beast, backs up that report, noting the use of props to illustrate gun regulation and immigration reform: “A senior White House official says the president will use the speech “to reinforce his commitment to expanding economic opportunity for middle-class families and those Americans striving to get there. It will be focused on the pocketbook issues that dominated the debate in his first term and proved decisive in the outcome of last year’s election.
“The White House is urging reporters to view the inaugural address and SOTU as ‘two acts in the same play,’ so that in addition to the middle-class economic focus Tuesday, ‘the president will echo many of the themes in the inaugural address.’ It is sure to be an emotional evening, with survivors of gun violence and young people striving for citizenship known as ‘DREAMers’ seated in the House chamber to symbolize policy changes under way.”
An analysis from The Hill anticipates Obama will call for bipartisan work specifically on immigration and gun control while he can get it: “Lawmakers say the president’s Tuesday speech will set the tone for the next 11 months, which is all the time the parties have to pass big bills before they dig in for the next election. …
“Obama’s high approval ratings are sure to fall, and bipartisanship on Capitol Hill is always fleeting. Timing is everything — and Obama’s time is now.”
Nuclear arms reduction and national cyber security will be addressed in the speech, according to the New York Times: “Mr. Obama, administration officials say, is unlikely to discuss specific numbers in the address, but White House officials are looking at a cut that would take the arsenal of deployed weapons to just above 1,000. Currently there are about 1,700, and the new strategic arms reduction treaty with Russia that passed the Senate at the end of 2009 calls for a limit of roughly 1,550 by 2018. …

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, a rising star in the GOP, will deliver the Republican response to President Barack Obama s State of the Union address on Tuesday.Credit: AP
“Within days of the State of the Union address, officials say, he plans to issue a long-anticipated presidential directive on combating cyberattacks aimed at American companies, financial institutions and critical infrastructure like the electric grid. The announcement comes at a moment of heightened attacks from China and, most recently, from Iran.”
More specifics: federal spending on infrastructure, higher education and research, reports the Washington Post: “Several senior administration officials involved in the speech say he will use his fourth State of the Union address to talk about jobs after the national unemployment rate ticked up last month. He will propose ways to make college more affordable to more people. And, the officials said, he will argue for the need to spend public money — on research, on roads, on education — to prepare Americans for a world where a warming climate, a nomadic labor force and new technology are shutting doors and opening new ones across the national economy.”
Obama’s Address will begin at 9 p.m. ET. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) will deliver the Republican response to the Address (in both English and Spanish!). Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) will follow with the “Tea Party” response.
Like Obama’s, the GOP response will be broadcast on TV. Paul’s speech will be streamed on the Tea Party Express website. All three speeches will be carried on TheBlaze TV, with coverage starting at 6pm ET (watch here).
TheBlaze will also host a live chat with our writers, editors and readers for the event. Check the homepage for the link Tuesday.

We won’t expect anything, because my family and my friends won’t be watching.
Will they play the Black National Anthem beforehand?

Posted on February 12, 2013 at 11:14amI expect the same that I expect from any other state of the union address since Reagan held office, which is Congress fighting to see who can clap the most over nothing, broad generalities from the POTUS (whomever he may be), lots of grandiose sweeping verbal gymnastics, a couple of “God Bless” references and nothing really of substance.
I read every state of the union address, but I’ve stopped watching them nearly 20 years ago. The rush to clap every time the POTUS burps or farts makes them functionally unwatchable. Plus I don’t like the idea that marketers have sat around crafting how a POTUS says things, the body language cues being scripted, all that.

Posted on February 12, 2013 at 9:14amBy the way, all, if you want a fun way to spend the time during Obama’s SOTU:
the Hot Air website has usually has an open thread whenever Obama has given a nationally-carried address or a press conference, where posters can comment on Obama’s remarks in real time, and I fully expect it will have such a thread tonight.
Although Hot Air’s membership is currently closed and thus those of you who are not registered on that site will not be able to post comments there regarding the SOTU, the people who currently post there have among the most searing wits you’ll find on ANY political website: they can say more in just one sentence than many of us here can in a full 1,500-word post – and that’s not a slam against anyone who posts here, merely a hat tip to how masterful the Hot Air posting crowd is at their craft.
Hot Air has become one of my favorite political websites precisely BECAUSE of that reason: in fact, the few times in the last couple of years that the site was thrown open to new enrollees, I decided not to register there simply because the people already there were WAY out of MY league in terms of creativity, and I decided to simply enjoy letting them do their thing there.
I will therefore likely pull up the open Hot Air thread tonight and follow the president’s SOTU through the comments posted in real time by the crowd that posts on Hot Air: I’ll learn a lot more from THEM than I ever will from OBAMA, and I’ll actually ENJOY what THEY have to say.

Posted on February 12, 2013 at 8:57amWhat we can expect from Obama in the SOTU tonight is the same thing we’ve been getting from him ever since he started his presidential candidacy way back in 2007: lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, more lies, and even MORE lies on top of THAT.
Which is why I won’t give the SOTU tonight even a second of my time.
I stopped listening to Obama way back in the presidential campaign of 2008 when he denied knowing about the inflammatory things that Jeremiah Wright had been saying in his pulpit that Sean Hannity brought to the attention of the American people. When I heard Obama say THAT, I knew right there and then that the man was a pathological liar and was not worthy of my ear – and I’ve tuned him out ever since.
As I’ve often stated on this, if Obama wants ME to listen to him, he’d better plan on throwing me into the gulag, where I’ll be hearing him over the camp loudspeakers – because he won’t be getting my ear any OTHER way.
ADVECTION posted at 8:20am: “Oh by the way, expect riots, looting, more unbelievable murders, and burning cities before his second term is out”,
Actually, the thought of cities like NYC, Washington DC, Philadelphia, Detroit, Baltimore, St. Louis, and the like become burned-out ruins resembling Hiroshima and Nagasaki after the A-bombs did their work in 1945 almost sounds downright APPEALING. Many of these cities are ALREADY on their deathbeds: all such riots will do is finally put them out of the world’s misery once and for all.

Posted on February 12, 2013 at 8:45amI don’t need to see this, we all know what he’s going to say and I just don’t have the stomach to look or hear his voice. I did not watch the inauguration and I will not watch this, I’ve tuned him out, still following the news and staying involved, but my life is slightly better avoiding his face. It will be the same speech that he has given for 5 years, a lot of progressive rhetoric and poll tested words and phrases and little specifics due to his policies and ideology being unpopular and an overwhelming FAILURE.

Posted on February 12, 2013 at 8:20amObama will be arrogant, condescending, and lying. He will be frothing at the mouth, blaming the problems he caused on the evil doers and people who take risks. He will champion the hapless, uneducated victims, most of which were created by his party.
The man appears to be no less psychopathic than the cop-killer who’s on the loose in L.A. Obama isn’t merely self deceived, he’s mad.
Oh by the way, expect riots, looting, more unbelievable murders, and burning cities before his second term is out. The evil spirits which obama embraces are at war with America.

Posted on February 12, 2013 at 8:49amJapan long recession was caused by their World War II baby boomers. Japan’s baby boom was from 1930 to 1940. When people reach the age of about 45, their spending slows while their savings increases. Japan’s baby boomers have an average age of 48 years old in 1989. That same year the Japanese stock market NIKKEI was at 38,000 then crashed. Today the NIKKEI is around 11,000 to 12,000. Japan had several stimulus spending bills none of them worked. There National debt was 25% of GDP in 1989 today it’s over 200% of GDP.
United States baby boom was from 1946 to 1964 with an average age of 48 years old in 2008, the same year the great recession started. Doing what Japan is doing will not help the United States.

Posted on February 12, 2013 at 8:05amLet Me Be Clear
1. Obamacare is now going to cost $2.8 trillion over 10 years, that’s $280 billion a year of money we don’t have.
2. Unemployment 7.8%, If we also counted the people who gave up looking for work unemployment would be about 11%, also if we counted the people who are working part time who wants to work full the real unemployment number would be about 17%.
3. The interest payment on the debt was $359 billion for fiscal year 2012 (@2.42% interest) the interest payment on the debt for fiscal year 2001 was also $359 billion, (the interest was at 6.06%). Interest rate will get back to 6.06% someday. $16.6 trillion @ 6.06% = $1.005 trillion interest annaul payment.
4. As you can see, I have been working hard to bankrupt the United States of America, there will be civil unrest and riots in the streets of America. Don’t worry, DHS has 1.6 billion bullets, FEMA has been building re-education camps.
5. In my second term, bottom up, top down, inside out. I Barack Obama will be king of the United States of America.

Read the telephone book?
We read the telephone book because the words make no difference. The power is not in the meaning of the words, but in their sounds. Read the phone book out of your angry feelings. Read it out of your joy. Read it to express sorrow. Read it to express supplication. Read it to demand justice! Read it to tell your Mother that you love her, your Mother Earth. She will know. She will understand.
End quote.
How do we prove media bias, but by reference books made available to them? This is but one of many tools (the book I referenced) that is a main staple of the professional resume of the media who uses a little of this, and a little of that, to make their world come to life? I would not use this book as a manual to get what you want accomplished, but I would suggest that you go to the library and read this book, to see how easy it is for the media to lobby your approval?
These are the people that are selected by the Democrat Party, the people that can read the phone book, they practice their signature moves, their signature phrases, cadences, and deliver the finished product to you, and you may assume that it was a spontaneous event, when in fact what you frequently see in the media is months of rehearsing?
Read this book Mr. Boehner, others could consider this book as the occasional distraction or as part of daily grooming?

Posted on February 12, 2013 at 7:45amThis will be an empty SOTU speech. Like all his speeches. I expect him to NOT talk about the economy. To NOT talk about jobs. To talk about increasing spending. He will use the term bipartisan numerous times but not mean a word of what he says. He will talk about the upcoming sequester. And he will probably acknowledge Uncle Teddy Nugent in the audience and then bash him like he did the justices in 2009 or 10. You can completely miss this speech because you already know he doesn’t mean a word of what he says.
