Here’s a Side-By-Side Comparison of How Obama, Rubio, & Paul View the State of the Union
President Barack Obama on Monday went before Congress to deliver his State of the Union address, the first of his second term.
Shortly after the president’s speech, Florida senator and rising GOP star Marco Rubio delivered the official Republican response. And shortly after Sen. Rubio’s response, Kentucky Senator Rand Paul delivered the official Tea Party response.
In their own words, here’s a look at how President Obama, Sen. Rubio, and Sen. Paul view the following topics:
The Economy:
Obama:
[W]e gather here knowing that there are millions of Americans whose hard work and dedication have not yet been rewarded. Our economy is adding jobs – but too many people still can’t find full-time employment. Corporate profits have rocketed to all-time highs – but for more than a decade, wages and incomes have barely budged.
Most Americans — Democrats, Republicans, and Independents — understand that we can’t just cut our way to prosperity. They know that broad-based economic growth requires a balanced approach to deficit reduction, with spending cuts and revenue, and with everybody doing their fair share.
Rubio:
Unfortunately, our economy actually shrank during the last three months of 2012. But if we can get the economy to grow at just 4 percent a year, it would create millions of middle class jobs. And it could reduce our deficits by almost $4 trillion dollars over the next decade.
Tax increases can’t do this. Raising taxes won’t create private sector jobs. And there’s no realistic tax increase that could lower our deficits by almost $4 trillion. That’s why I hope the President will abandon his obsession with raising taxes and instead work with us to achieve real growth in our economy.
Paul:
Under the Obama economy, 12 million people are out of work. During the President’s first term 800,000 construction workers lost their jobs and another 800,000 simply gave up on looking for work.
[...]
Under President Obama, the ranks of America’s poor swelled to almost 1 in 6 people last year, reaching a new high as long-term unemployment left millions of Americans struggling and out of work.
[...]
With my five-year budget, millions of jobs would be created by cutting the corporate income tax in half, by creating a flat personal income tax of 17%, and by cutting the regulations that are strangling American businesses.
National Debt:
Obama:
[T]he biggest driver of our long-term debt is the rising cost of health care for an aging population. And those of us who care deeply about programs like Medicare must embrace the need for modest reforms – otherwise, our retirement programs will crowd out the investments we need for our children, and jeopardize the promise of a secure retirement for future generations.
Rubio:
The real cause of our debt is that our government has been spending 1 trillion dollars more than it takes in every year. That’s why we need a balanced budget amendment. The biggest obstacles to balancing the budget are programs where spending is already locked in.
One of these programs, Medicare, is especially important to me. It provided my father the care he needed to battle cancer and ultimately die with dignity. And it pays for the care my mother receives now. I would never support any changes to Medicare that would hurt seniors like my mother. But anyone who is in favor of leaving Medicare exactly the way it is right now, is in favor of bankrupting it.
Paul:
Over the past four years [President Obama] has added over $6 trillion in new debt and may well do the same in a second term. What solutions does he offer? He takes entitlement reform off the table and seeks to squeeze more money out of the private sector.
[...]
This massive expansion of the debt destroys savings and steals the value of your wages.
Big government makes it more expensive to put food on the table. Big government is not your friend. The President offers you free stuff but his policies keep you poor.
[...]
Both parties have been guilty of spending too much, of protecting their sacred cows, of backroom deals in which everyone up here wins, but every taxpayer loses.
It is time for a new bipartisan consensus.
It is time Democrats admit that not every dollar spent on domestic programs is sacred. And it is time Republicans realize that military spending is not immune to waste and fraud.
Where would we cut spending; well, we could start with ending all foreign aid to countries that are burning our flag and chanting death to America.
Immigration:
Obama:
[T]he time has come to pass comprehensive immigration reform.
[…]
Real reform means establishing a responsible pathway to earned citizenship – a path that includes passing a background check, paying taxes and a meaningful penalty, learning English, and going to the back of the line behind the folks trying to come here legally.
And real reform means fixing the legal immigration system to cut waiting periods, reduce bureaucracy, and attract the highly-skilled entrepreneurs and engineers that will help create jobs and grow our economy.
Rubio:
We can also help our economy grow if we have a legal immigration system that allows us to attract and assimilate the world’s best and brightest. We need a responsible, permanent solution to the problem of those who are here illegally. But first, we must follow through on the broken promises of the past to secure our borders and enforce our laws.
Paul:
We are the party that embraces hard work and ingenuity, therefore we must be the party that embraces the immigrant who wants to come to America for a better future. We must be the party who sees immigrants as assets, not liabilities. We must be the party that says, “If you want to work, if you want to become an American, we welcome you.”
“The Sequester”:
Obama:
These sudden, harsh, arbitrary cuts would jeopardize our military readiness. They’d devastate priorities like education, energy, and medical research. They would certainly slow our recovery, and cost us hundreds of thousands of jobs. That’s why Democrats, Republicans, business leaders, and economists have already said that these cuts, known here in Washington as “the sequester,” are a really bad idea.
Rubio:
We don’t have to raise taxes to avoid the President’s devastating cuts to our military. Republicans have passed a plan that replaces these cuts with responsible spending reforms.
In order to balance our budget, the choice doesn’t have to be either higher taxes or dramatic benefit cuts for those in need. Instead we should grow our economy so that we create new taxpayers, not new taxes, and so our government can afford to help those who truly cannot help themselves.
Paul:
The President does a big “woe is me” over the $1.2 trillion sequester that he endorsed and signed into law. Some Republicans are joining him. Few people understand that the sequester doesn’t even cut any spending. It just slows the rate of growth. Even with the sequester, government will grow over $7 trillion over the next decade.
[...]
Not only should the sequester stand, many pundits say the sequester really needs to be at least4 trillion to avoid another downgrade of America’s credit rating. Both parties will have to agree to cut, or we will never fix our fiscal mess.
Energy:
Obama:
Last year, wind energy added nearly half of all new power capacity in America. So let’s generate even more. Solar energy gets cheaper by the year — so let’s drive costs down even further. As long as countries like China keep going all-in on clean energy, so must we.
In the meantime, the natural gas boom has led to cleaner power and greater energy independence. That’s why my Administration will keep cutting red tape and speeding up new oil and gas permits. But I also want to work with this Congress to encourage the research and technology that helps natural gas burn even cleaner and protects our air and water.
[…]
I propose we use some of our oil and gas revenues to fund an Energy Security Trust that will drive new research and technology to shift our cars and trucks off oil for good.
Rubio:
One of the best ways to encourage growth is through our energy industry. Of course solar and wind energy should be a part of our energy portfolio. But God also blessed America with abundant coal, oil, and natural gas. Instead of wasting more taxpayer money on so-called “clean energy” companies like Solyndra, let’s open up more federal lands for safe and responsible exploration.
And let’s reform our energy regulations so that they’re reasonable and based on common sense. If we can grow our energy industry, it will make us energy independent, it will create middle class jobs and it will help bring manufacturing back from places like China.
Paul: Sen. Paul in his response didn’t specifically address U.S. energy, but it’s widely known that he opposes government intervention in the free market. Obviously, this would extend to large and expensive government investments (i.e. the people’s money) in “green” energy.
“The only stimulus ever proven to work is leaving more money in the hands of those who earned it!” Sen. Paul said.
“For those who are struggling we want to you to have something infinitely more valuable than a free phone, we want you to have a job and pathway to success,” he added.

Rand Paul’s response was best.
Don’t know if Rand Paul is my choice for 2016, but do know I’m up to the eyeballs with the do nothing Republicans. Whoever runs there will have to stay in line with the top dogs there. They will all claim Rubio’s response the best!
Did you know we could balance the budget in only 7 years.by cutting one cent from every dollar we spend? So what’s the hold up?
And he isn’t the only one not falling apart over sequestration, saying it simply cuts growth of spending, but it would still add over $7 trillion growth in new spending?
They all seem to talk about increasing spending. Don’t they understand we are broke?
The federal debt as a % of GDP was 58.8% in 2002 and now is over 104%!
The deficits for fiscal operation in 2002 were $157 billion. in 2012 it was $1l32 Trillion!
CBO, GAO, SS Trustees, Medicare/Medical Trustees say this in unsustainable!
Obama? Kind of like the name it and claim it philosophy! Just give me more money and I’ll fix it all for you! And most on the Hannity Focus Team thought he did great!
Easy to just shake you r head and walk away from the whole bunch of them!
HOW can anyone even think that?

The weight of legal and historical authority indicates that the term “natural born” citizen would mean a person who is entitled to U.S. citizenship “by birth” or “at birth”, either by being born “in” the United States and under its jurisdiction, even those born to alien parents; by being born abroad to U.S. citizen-parents; or by being born in other situations meeting legal requirements for U.S. citizenship “at birth”.
Rubio was born in Miami, a city in the United States!

Keep watching the emperor play his fiddle, folks…THAT will solve our problems!
After reading the SOTU text and responses today, as I refuse to waste my time listening to the partisan applause tracks for the person most responsible for putting the final nails in the coffin of what was once the greatest country on the face of the earth, it is obvious that the best line in all three was, “let’s wipe the place clean.”
Read your responses, folks. One guy sucks because he voted for John Kerry as SOS. One guy sucks because you aren’t sure of his citizenship. One guy sucks because tells us “we don’t have a spending problem.”
You KNOW the answer, yet you think that writing on The Blaze comment board is going to change things.
Either do something to affect change, or accept what others have forced down our throats. Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness is wonderful, but remember that most of it is dictated by how the majority votes in this country.
Here’s my question: if the Tea Party is the bane of all existence, why was Rand Paul given face time last night? Because the emperor wants to further split the conservative vote for the mid-terms and Hilarious’ coronation in 2016???

Posted on February 13, 2013 at 11:21amAhhh yes. The old Natural Born Citizen argument. An argument which is a non-issue based on this:
Based upon the language of Article II, Section 1, Clause 4 and the guidance provided by Wong Kim Ark, we conclude that persons born within the borders of the United States are “natural born Citizens” for Article II, Section 1 purposes, regardless of the citizenship of their parents. Ankeny v. Governor of State of Indiana, 916 NE 2d 678 – Ind: Court of Appeals 2009
Simply put: Any child born on US soil or in a US territory who retains American citizenship is a defacto NBC. PERIOD. Parents status means nothing.
And also this:
“It is an established maxim that birth is a criterion of allegiance. Birth however derives its force sometimes from place and sometimes from parentage, but in general place is the most certain criterion; it is what applies in the United States; it will therefore be unnecessary to investigate any other.” [Rep. James Madison (circa May 22, 1789)]

Posted on February 13, 2013 at 7:44pmRubio does have a Natural Born Birth problem. There has yet to be a definite decision, written, by the Supreme Court on this issue. Be that as it may. I agree that Rubio’s speech from last nite shows he’s gone over to the dark side. It is yet to be determined if he is totally a goner but from the content of his speech he is on that slippery slope and going over the edge.
Rand Paul, on the other hand, has no birth issues; he is one of the few that has stood up to Reid and the Dems in the Senate; and, he has a plan that could work and he’s not afraid to put it on the table for all to see as seen in his speech last nite.

Posted on February 13, 2013 at 8:04amAny raise in the minimum wage should be viewed as a direct assault on the middle class, which is what the Obama objective has been the whole time. Increase the minimum wage by 2%, the minimum wage earners will feel like they are doing better for a few weeks or months not realizing that their PB&J sandwiches now cost 2% more because the JIFFY company has to raise prices to pay their minimum wage workers more. Meanwhile everyone else especially those at the lower middle class income levels feels the bite on their already strained budgets. This of course is all planned. A vast majority of Americans, especially vets that are still “war ready” are now disheartened and struggling with keeping gas in their cars and food on their children’s plates.

Posted on February 13, 2013 at 8:51amIf $9 is good why not round it up to $10, why not $20 per hour and let them not only live above poverty but be middle class? Why not a minimum of $100 per hour and we can all be upper middle class? This is the fallacy of the minimum wage argument. Also don’t forget a lot of union contracts are tied to the minimum wage and they would all get an automatic wage increase.
Wal Mart in ND is paying $17 for entry workers and still can not find people to fill. Same problem with service industry like restaurants etc they just get someone hired and trained only to loose to someone else paying more. The even larger problem is not enough housing for new workers coming into the area. The ECONOMY in that state is BOOMING, that is what drives higher wages not some set number from the Gov. He who shall not be named could learn something on how the economy really works and apply it to the whole country. Unfortunately it goes against everything he believes.

Posted on February 13, 2013 at 10:03amRaising the minimum wage will result in higher unemployment. Employers will cut hours or reduce staff to recoup the loss of higher payroll expenses. Salaries and wages should be negotiated at time of job offer, not mandated by govt. If someone wants more money, they need to bring more to the table as far as skills, education, experience. If he brings nothing to the table and his job is unskilled labor, he’s not in a position to demand more. Poverty sucks, I know, I’ve been there, but raising the minimum wage won’t make it better. It’ll result in more poverty and employers will pass those higher wages on to the consumer raising prices of goods and services along with cutting hours and staff.

Marco Rubio, March 2009:
“I am strongly against amnesty. The most important thing we need to do is enforce our existing laws. We have existing immigration laws that are not being adequately enforced. Nothing will make it harder to enforce the existing laws, if you reward people who broke them. It demoralizes people who are going through the legal process, its a very clear signal of why go through the legal process, if you can accomplish the same thing if you go through the illegal process. And number two, if demoralizes the people enforcing the laws. I am not, and I will never support any effort to grant blanket legalization/amnesty to folks who have entered, stayed in this country illegally.”

Posted on February 13, 2013 at 7:00pmBrother you are wrong on this one. Rand shares the same views on immigration as his father. He wants to cut all the entitlements to illegals. This by itself fixes the immigration issue. A guy will come to America and work, he wont bring his family because he wont be able to afford to keep them here and pay for a private school for his kids.
If the economy was back on track we would love immigrant workers.
Ron Paul was the right choice for president the last two times. I can only hope we make it long enough to allow Rand to have a shot. Of course I am sure the establishment will call him crazy also. I mean doing the same thing over and over again (McCain and Romney douche bag progressives) and expecting the different results has worked out so well.

Posted on February 12, 2013 at 11:34pmIt grieves me that much of the media rushes to spin the Stoner-in-Chief’s misleading propaganda in a manner that suggests we are making economic progress as a nation, when nothing could be further from the truth and they all know it. It sickens me that he seems to lack humility and any reliance upon God, and that he meets with members of the Muslim Brotherhood and/or their designee. May I gain solace from the unmistakable truth that our Heavenly Father is stronger than Obama and that I have a slight glimmer of understanding in the book of Isaiah where we are told that His ways our not our ways. May Thy Will, and not my will, nor Obama’s will, be done… May God bless America and comfort the families and friends of Chris Kyle and all of our veterans and active service members, and their loved ones.

Is Rubio going to give amnesty to other law breakers like murderers or robbers or rapists? No and amnesty/path to citizenship should not be given to those who broke our immigration laws either!

There is a huge philosophical difference between Rubio and Paul. One is an avid constitutionalist, the other toes the line of Republican establishment with a touch of conservatism. One obeys the constitution as it was meant to be the other will toe the line of the Republican Party DESPITE what the constitution says.
As the years go by toward 2016 you will see Rubio turn into an Eric Cantor or John Boehner because the establishment has picked their man for 2016. Much like unionism, the Republican Party picks by seniority not by record or philosophy.
Watch Karl Rove and the ilk under the (R) tag, which has been equally culpable in destroying our constitution back Rubio or blue dog Democrat John Huntsman Jr in 2016.

If dad Paul had a message that resonated with the majority of the public, then he would have been president by now. Rand is a different animal. I like him and he would have my vote in a heartbeat.
But it is not about one man, if that is what we make it into then America is indeed finished.
If we cannot work together with those with whom we agree on 80% of things then how do you expect anything to change for the better?
No one person encapsulates everything I believe, not even my husband of 25 years and yet somehow we have made it work. If I had waited to find a person to marry that believes 100% as I do, I would never have gotten married; we share a common intrest and enough basic beliefs that we can work as a team and make our lives and that of our children better.

You are right. It is NOT about the man, it is about the philosophy which I described in my first post. The 2012 elections were about the man, that is why we lost HARD! Mit Romney was the “chosen one” – he ran for governor with a different set of views then ran for POTUS with a “change of heart”. I find it hard to believe that Mit Romney has or had a philosophy (consistency is the basis of philosophy) at this point in his political life. I find it insincere.
Until politicians become philosophers or philosophers run for office (like Rand Paul) America will continue on the decline.

With individuality comes differences in opinion and when combined and debated, comes the brilliance that created this country. Did Jefferson, Washington and Adams agree on everything?
Philosophy/ideology is great until it demands that you erase all differences in thought and methods in order to accomplish anything, then it is destructive.

Do you have the same philosophy about the 2nd amendment – there is room for compromise. You may not have an AR-15 so its no harm to you that they are banned. Is that the appropriate amount of compromise for you?
If you do not understand that philosophy is the most important aspect of a candidate then you can write the American Obit. I want a candidate that is unwavering to the United States Constitution, is that too much to ask for?
The only group I see in D.C. trying to turn this big ship around is the Tea Party Caucus, unfortunately Rubio refused to join the Tea Party Caucus and has wavered on a few big budgetary items – which leads me to believe he will melt into the establishment of the Republican Party when they show him dollar signs during the 2016 race for POTUS, as he will be the next “chosen” candidate for the (R) part of our two party system.
No more compromise for me sir, constitutional candidate or I write in… again.

No, not talking about compromise. What I am saying is remove both egos and emotion out of the process. I believe there are many amongst us that are able to see and accept logic and those people should work together and come to reasoned and logical solutions. Compromise is giving a little on both sides, while logic and reason stand alone as truth. Yet we cannot seem to get to a discussion without people adding in their “feelings” or their ego based ideologies into the discussion.
Take the immigration issue for an example.
Fact: We have people in this country who are here illegally…lots of them.
If you cut them off from welfare and benefits will they self deport? Yes, some of them will, but not all of them. You would still have to go door to door and “round up” millions. I for one, would not take kindly to the authorities banging on my door to search it for “illegal residents”.
For years the Libertarian Party stance has been no borders. The philosophical stance is that people should be free to live wherever they wish. It is something that has turned many people off to the party. Logically, and practically it does not fly, strict adherence to the philosophy is flawed.
On both sides of the issue there are flaws where logic is concerned so does that mean that we must stick to philosophy/ideology or that we are “selling out” if we return to reason in the practical application of the solution? I think no

Posted on February 13, 2013 at 12:56pmRand Paul acknowledges that you cannot have open borders and a welfare state. That should be the real liberty position. Welcome immigrants, make it easy to come to America, as a free person you can fly as high as your wings will take you, but there won’t be government handouts. Immigration policy like this would bring a stampede of the best and brightest from other countries and would discourage the deadbeats who would come here for a handout. This would make America a better place.
Unfortunately, we won’t be getting rid of the welfare state anytime soon. I’m impressed that there are a decent amount of people who are not being duped by the Hannitys of the world who have been telling us for the last two years that Rubio is our conservative savior.
