Suspected LA Cop Killer Possibly Dead After Cabin Stronghold Is Engulfed in Flames

California authorities on Tuesday engaged in a furious firefight with a man they believe to be Christopher Dorner, the suspected cop killer who declared war on the LAPD last week.
Murdered: Dorner allegedly shot and killed Keith Lawrence with his fiancee, Monica Quan, on Feb. 3 in a parking garage near their Irvine condominium. (Facebook).
Two San Bernardino deputies have been shot and wounded, according to initial reports.
From The Associated Press:
A person believed to be the fugitive ex-Los Angeles cop sought in three killings exchanged gunfire with authorities in the San Bernardino Mountains on Tuesday, a law enforcement official said on condition of anonymity.
The officer requested anonymity because the officer was not authorized to speak publicly about the ongoing investigation.
The officer told The Associated Press it’s believed Christopher Dorner committed a residential burglary of a cabin and had a couple tied up in the cabin. One was able to get away and make a call.
Authorities responded to the location and gave chase when Dorner fled in a stolen car. Gunfire was exchanged.
The area is in the Big Bear region where a search for Dorner has been under way since his pickup truck was found there Thursday.

San Bernardino County sheriff’s spokeswoman Jodi Miller said a stolen vehicle report from a residence was received at 12:20 p.m.
“The reporting party identified the suspect as looking like Christopher Dorner but that has not been confirmed,” Miller said.
UPDATE: CBS Los Angeles confirms that two deputies have been shot. As of this writing, it is unclear how serious their wounds are.
The firefight also appears to have died down, but the area is still swarming with armed police officers.
Earlier, when shots were being fired, a reporter with CBS Los Angeles picked up the explosive scene on his microphone. Screams, shouts, and dozens of gun shots could be clearly heard in the live report.
“Get the f**k out of here!” one police officer shouted to the CBS anchor.
Although no shots are being fired at this, CBS reports that every officer on the scene is alert, heavily armed, and “none of them have lowered their rifles.”
UPDATE II: Authorities say Dorner is holed up in a cabin in the Angelus Oaks, Calif., area.
Police have also requested that all media cameras be removed from the scene as they move in on the gunman’s position. This includes all news choppers. So, yes, they’re clearing the airspace over the cabin.
Lastly, according to several reports, the two wounded deputies have been airlifted out of the area and taken to a nearby hospital.
Dorner allegedly shot and killed Police Officer Michael Crain, a decorated U.S. Marine, on Feb. 7. He was married and had two children. (Reuters).
UPDATE III: It appears that the situation has turned into a tense standoff. We will bring you important updates as they become available.
UPDATE IV: LAPD Officer Andrew Smith, commander of media affairs, made a quick statement on the situation and took some questions from members of the press.
“LAPD sent resources to San Bernardino,” he said, adding that they are “waiting for authorization to assist,” but “only if asked.”
“We are continuing to work clues while events in San Bernardino unfold,” he said.
When asked by a reporter whether the gunman is actually Dorner, Smith answered, “Until we get this guy in custody — until in hand cuffs and in jail — we’re not going to know for sure.”
“Everyone is very hopeful that this thing ends without further bloodshed, he said, “the best thing for him would be to surrender and we can take him into custody.”
“If he is watching this, the message for him is, ‘enough is enough,’” he said. “”It’s time to turn yourself in. It’s time to stop the bloodshed. It’s time to let this bloodshed be over.”
Smith also stressed that there is nothing at this time to confirm whether Dorner has hostages with him in the cabin (contrary to earlier reports).
UPDATE V: CBS and Fox affiliates in L.A. and CNN are reporting that one of the two deputies injured in today’s firefight has died.
UPDATE VI: The cabin is now on fire and CNN is reporting that a SWAT team is using a heavy vehicle to breach the building.
However, CBS L.A. is also reporting that, based on tracks leading away from the cabin to a nearby horse corral, there is a small possibility that the gunman may have escaped. But that’s all speculation.
Also, it bears repeating: It is still unconfirmed at this time whether the gunman inside the cabin is actually suspected cop kill Christopher Dorner.
UPDATE VII: Per a CBS affiliate on the scene in Big Bear, Calif., police officers have started to relax, some even smoking cigarettes, and it’s highly unlikely that whoever is holed up inside the burning inferno (if there is indeed someone in there) is coming out alive.
“This may, in fact, be over,” said the CBS reporter.
Final Update: It looks like we’re one step closer to bringing this story to a close. From the L.A. Times:
A body was found inside the burned out cabin Tuesday night where Christopher Jordan Dorner was believed to have kept law enforcement authorities at bay before officers fired tear gas into the structure, a source told The Times.
The body, which was found in the charred rubble of the mountainside cabin, was not positively identified, the source said. The process of making a determination whether the body is that of the former Los Angeles Police Department officer could take hours or even days, the source said.
As authorities moved into the cabin earlier Tuesday, they heard a single gunshot.
Final Update II: Sorry, folks. False alarm.
In a troubling turn of events, the LAPD has put out a statement saying that no body has been extracted from the house and no one has been identified. As of this writing, it’s too hot for recovery teams to move in and look for the gunman’s remains (which, now that we think about it, makes complete sense. Apologies).

When the federal government wants a rightwing patriot’s guns, they come with a pieces of paper. The patriot doesn’t barricade himself in and go out in a “blaze of gory”. He complies then sues them for violating his constitutional rights.
What we’re witnessing today is how a leftwing “patriot” goes about standing up for his “rights”. He declares war on society, murders everyone he can, steals whatever he can, and shoots it out with the police.

Imagine this scenario. You lose a court case, and then because you are upset at your fiances FATHER, you kill your fiance. From then on you go around on a rampage shooting fellow cops, and then run into the mountains. Then you hijack a persons car and tie the people up, and then go hole up in a cabin(not yours).
Tell me more about how he is a law abiding citizen, and is just defending his rights. Someone who is defending his rights wont go kill his fiance, and then go shooting people. There are few gun owners, that will go shooting at cops for no reason. Most gun owners, will only shoot, if people show up on their doorstep, to take their stuff, or harm their family. Not go out on a shooting rampage.

I don’t hate police or military, but we ALL need to understand what happens when our government goes tyrannical. We need police and military to understand that THEY will be in charge of inflicting the will of the oppressor pols on Americans when the time comes. Most reasonable people who have been wronged by a cop, or maybe a couple of them, just move on. But every once in a while there will be hell to pay when someone feels that they have been dealt with unjustly. This can only be eliminated when the police in this nation stop covering for one another when they have wronged a private citizen. Say what you want, but if cops don’t start changing their attitudes….then I predict there will be more of this kind of chaos.

Did you see the news last week? More liberals were caught just before going on their murdering sprees. They wanted to make people believe they were conservatives attacking liberals. However, history has taught that you simply CANNOT allow you weapons to be taken…EVER. The LA PD have just about the worst reputation in the country as far as professionalism goes. All police forces have idiots and good professional LEO’s, some more than others. Part of the human condition.
Cop killers have to stopped quickly. If the cops aren’t safe, the rest of us are even less safe. I will try to defend myself or others in a pinch. I have no intention of tracking down and arresting anyone for a crime, much less do it for a living. I have no intention of inserting myself in unsafe neighborhoods or situations hoping to difuse a violent incident. Neither do you. In my town we need our cops. Do I like all of them? NO. Am I glad they are on patrol and on the job? Of course.

That argument about catching cop killers quickly because others are in danger is getting old. They ONLY reason that they put that many resources on this is because he “killed a cop”. So, because that you say it is OK to send out the murder squads? I am not impressed with elevating those that are supposed to be WORKING FOR US, to God-like status and placing the value of their lives exponentially above that of everybody else. Can’t you understand that? You have to be either in law enforcement or related to someone that is for you to not see what the cops really are. Like others have said, when they start putting up 1 million dollar rewards for the killers of average citizens, then you come talk to me then. Be consistent. Either you are for big government and all the goons that go along with it or you are not. I suspect you are one of them.

I have a relative who is a cop who has no business doing anything but pushing a mop. I voted for Romney, never been arrested. I hate injustice and I see, even in the Droner story, injustice on display within the police department. Many of you have no problem with two innocent women being shot by police. I do. I lived in New Orleans for seven years and two FBI investigations that yielded multitudes of corruptions from the top down. I have a problem with criminals who have guns, badges and authority. I have no sympathy for Droner, but I have no sympathy for a fallen police officer when they are either corrupt or they turn a blind eye to corruption. They are clearly not there to protect and serve the public, they are there to cover for each other and take care of their own, do as little as possible to collect a pension. LAPD has shown this if anyone cared to look honestly. I don’t know how you walk away from this believing the police are innocent. Clearly they created this monster and they dedicated millions of dollars of resources to contain him. What and who they are is now clear. Let’s see if anyone lifts a finger to address the real problem.

Posted on February 12, 2013 at 10:42pmI’ll probably tick off both “sides” on this one. I’m a cop and a libertarian (aka Paulbot). To some that seems like an oxymoron but the fact is that there are many cops who have a very strong conservative/libertarian philosophy.
Statements like those above, that cops are 90% arrogant and 10% bully or even statements that cops are heroes are both ridiculous. There are almost 800,000 cops in America today and so, like in any profession, there is the full gamut of personality types. There are some cops who are horrible human beings (those are the ones that turn up on viral videos) and there are some cops who are among the finest people you could ever hope to meet (those are the ones you rarely hear anything about).
Anyone who implies that all cops are bad or likewise that all cops are good is making a foolish statement.
In Dorner’s case, it’s possible that he was wrongly fired for being a whistleblower. I don’t know and neither do any of you. If he was, it certainly doesn’t justify the homicidal rampage he apparently resorted to. In my 28+ years of experience on a fairly large city police department, I’ve seen that the really bad cops weed themselves out and rarely have a full term career.

What troubles me most is the almost blood-thirst they get when a person is accused of shooting a policeman. It is cowardly in my opinion to send 500+ “cops”, dressed up like they are going on a 3 week jungle mission to the Peruvian mountains, after 1 guy. 40 pounds of body armor and Kevlar helmets. They are cowards if the odds are not at least 10-1. Just my observation. Heros? Yes some. But the “typical” one is only there to serve themselves and the State. They are NOT your friend. Unless of course, you are one of them.

I have a question for you. Of all the police you regularly encounter… are you implying that if you called 911 from your house… that they wouldn’t respond? Of course they would. If you ever needed to be saved from a bad guy, they will always come to help – even at the risk of their own lives. THAT my friend, is a hero.
