‘My Biggest Concern Was Having to Piss Really Bad’: Listen to the Story of the Bin Laden Raid in the Words of the Man Who Allegedly Shot Him

Yesterday, Esquire published a report on the Navy SEAL who allegedly killed Osama bin Laden — what the raid was like through his eyes, and what his life is like in the aftermath. At a lengthy seven pages, though, many only read third-party accounts of the article.
You can read ours here.
Now, the Center for Investigative Reporting, which published the piece in cooperation with Esquire, has released a YouTube video using the SEAL’s own words to describe the dramatic events. His real voice is not used and the images are animated, but the story is so gripping that it hardly matters after a few minutes.
We’ve transcribed a few quotes from the movie to give you an idea.
Before the raid:
“If we only killed 5 or 6 guys a night, we were wasting our time…We’d go in and a guy would be sleeping. Up against the wall were his cologne, deodorant, soap, suicide vest, AK-47, and grenades…We had a target like that in Iraq….We ended up clearing about 7 or 8 houses; we killed an entire cell of Al-Qaeda. Probably 14 guys. No women were hurt, no children were hurt, but they were there. We were working with two dogs at the time — the woman’s quote in the newspaper was, ‘ninjas came with lions.’
“The SEAL commander, cool as ever, said, ‘Okay, we’re as close as we’ve ever been to UBL.’ There was none of that cheering bull***t. We were thinking, ‘Yeah, okay, good, it’s about time we killed this motherf***er.’”
When the CIA analyst made famous in “Zero Dark Thirty” asked him how he could be so calm, the SEAL replied: “We do this every night. We go to a house, we f*** with some people, we leave. This is just a longer flight.”

This image released by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency shows a scale model of the compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, where Osama bin Laden was killed. (Photo: AP)
During the raid:
“My biggest concern was having to piss really bad, and then having to get off in a fight needing to pee. I used one of my water bottles. I peed in that, and actually carried it through the whole mission. I forgot until later, when I shot Bin Laden in the face, I had a bottle of piss in my pocket.”
“We’d always assumed we’d be surrounded at some point. You see the videos of him walking around, and he’s got all those jihadis, but they weren’t prepared. They got all complacent. They guys that could shoot, shot, but we were on top of them so fast…”
“One of the SEALS shot a guy and a woman. He told me, ‘Jesus, these women are jumping in front of these guys. They’re trying to martyr themselves.’ Another sign that this is a serious place.”
After the raid:
“I’m eating a breakfast sandwich, standing near bin Laden’s body, looking at a big screen TV with the president announcing the raid…thinking ‘how the f*** did I get here? This is too much.’”
“I deployed again to Afghanistan to show that I wasn’t a douche bag, that I’m still a part of this team and I believe what we’re doing. My feeling now has changed, which is part of the reason I got out. A lot of the missions they’re going on are going to be a waste of really good lives…I was just burned out, I’m done.”
Explaining security precautions his family has taken, the SEAL said: “[My ex-wife] has a packed suitcase with all the things the family needs for 4 days…my kids have a f***ing bolt bag, that’s what I call it…And if something comes up, I call her. Like get in the f***ing car, grab the suitcase, and just go.”
“The government doesn’t want us talking about anything so basically, I leave the Navy and, I can’t say anything. Here I am without a degree, and sixteen years of doing nothing.”
“I’d like to do something that has nothing to do with my past. I don’t want to carry a gun. I don’t have a need for excitement anymore, honestly. In 5 years, what I’d like to do is have a platform for guys who are in the same position as me right now, to be able to come out and get work in a field that they want, and then I’d like to have a foundation for the families as well. Families of guys from SEAL Team 6 that have died.”

Posted on February 12, 2013 at 12:49pmOk, I have to throw the BS flag here. Someone else might have mentioned this, but I have read through the comments yet.
This “Shooter” recalls almost word-for-word the ‘official’ recount of events as told by White House staff. The SEAL who wrote “No Easy Day” details the events of bin Laden’s shooting quite differently. Consider this: the ‘No Easy Day’ author was the SEAL directly behind THE MAN who actually shot bin Laden.
“The point man’s shots had entered the right side of his head. Blood and brains spilled out of the side of his skull. In his death throes, he was still twitching and convulsing. Another assaulter and I trained our lasers on his chest and fired several rounds.”
From No Easy Day by ‘Mark Owen’.
Even funnier, The Blaze has an article refuting this supposed SEAL’s story: http://www.theblaze.com/stories/2012/09/10/seal-behind-the-bin-laden-tell-all-gives-detailed-60-minutes-interview-in-disguise/
Excerpt: “Appearing Sunday on CBS’ “60 Minutes,” Owen — which is the man’s pen name — says one SEAL fired after seeing a man’s head poking into a hallway. Owen says he and another SEAL shot bin Laden again after finding him on his bedroom floor with a bullet in his skull, because bin Laden’s hands were hidden.
That’s more detail than was included in “No Easy Day,” the newly released book Owen wrote under intense scrutiny from the government and his fellow SEALs.”

Posted on February 12, 2013 at 11:40amI Don’t know man, …. Not doubting the guy,but something just doesn’t seem to add up ….. Maybe it is the psychologist in me, always analyzing everything ….. I can only figure the shooter, having accomplished that mission that I am sure he has always told himself is the reason he is doing what he does, has now re-evaluated his entire history, wondering if it was all worth it. Often times, success is harder to deal with than failure, particularly to the degree of success I Am sure this event carries for these guys. I am sure there are guys who are jealous, as he indicated, those who dropped out since the entire purpose of their existence has been eliminated along with the life of Osama. …. Yeah, I am sure this is what it is, the poor guy is having a psychological conflict, realizing that the result of 16 years of doing this, he is a killer. Life is crazy like that, it is like , one day, it just all clicks, a compilation of our actions all of a suddenly, make us who we are. It is surreal, especially that moment he speaks of standing next to the body. Like watching a video in fast forward, then watching the final clip… Except here you are, not 18, but 34, 35 years old, nearly half your life gone, asking yourself, is this it ?? Is this all there is to life ?? That is why people often have unrealistic dreams, having never really believed they would reach those accomplishments. At least for those of us who are a little crazy, those who are stable think realistically.

Posted on February 12, 2013 at 12:02pmHe was pretty clear about “A lot of the missions they’re going on are going to be a waste of really good lives…I was just burned out, I’m done.”
It was NOT long after the bin Laden mission that SEALS began to get hammered, a couple of times en masse. Latrells story was worrying about the legal ramifications of shooting a man and boy who had discovered them. The hesitation caused his team to get wiped out. Then their was the administration giving away secret information which affected the security of the SEALS, and the lying by the administration which led to distrust of the suits sending them on missions. There’s good reason to be in his shoes (retired).

Posted on February 12, 2013 at 11:36amSomething stinks about this whole thing. Why would he walk away from a pension? Why didn’t he know that his insurance didn’t transfer? 16 years in service, the most elite the Navy has, and he doesn’t go to a separations class? You can’t just quit and walk away. His GI Bill should take care of his fantasy about a college degree, assuming he doesn’t piss it away on a BA at NYU. 16 years of service and he doesn’t have shipmates that he can network through? He knows what his skillset was when he chose to leave, he has no choice but to leverage his alleged ST6 experience in some fashion while he attends college. Something just doesn’t add up.

Posted on February 12, 2013 at 2:02pmRose-Ellen what country are you from?
So basically you believe Bin Ladin was a freedom fighter, and a hero? You think any killing he was behind was justified? Including the innocent civilians at 9/11… I’m pretty sure that would place you under possible ‘war criminal’ or ‘co-conspirator’…. You revel in the death and torment of others?
I’m sorry, but MLK jr, or Ghandi he is not.
Soldiers are under orders, and they follow orders or get court martialed and imprisoned. If there is anyone guilty of innocent bystanders being killed, it is with the politicians that give orders. If any murders happen, they are the ones in charge. Only look at WW2, where it was the Nazi commanders and politicians, not the common soldiers who generally tried for war crimes, not the common soldiers under their command.
Besides, if american soldiers commit a war crime, or if there is even suspicion of it, they go through war tribunals to find their guilt or innocence.

Posted on February 12, 2013 at 2:17pmAlso I’d rather western soldiers weren’t in those countries… We don’t need to be picking sides… the side that we have picked doesn’t diserve out help…
They can just go on killing each other (and the women and children) without our help, and continue to show to the world that they murderous cultures that they actually are. Give enough time the shiate and sunni will wipe each other off the planet, while genocidally taking out other local groups such as the Kurds with them… We shouldn’t be choosing which homicidal group to back….
They should also not expect to have any humanitarian supplies either, because we can’t support cultures ‘killing’ each other, and misusing the supplies we give to them. Ya, Egypt you shouldn’t be getting those planes…

Posted on February 12, 2013 at 3:56pmI recognize the fact he was a murderer. So are we.And following unjust orders-to kill an unarmed man-is a war crime. The fact is people will see himaas a freedom fighter who launced the peoples century and brought us to the knowledge that our policies can impact us. That we can no longer be so sure of acting for our interestrs only -with impunity. We spent the whole 20th century dropping bombs on men women and children and never thought the same could happen to us. But it did. We’re very thin skinned about it. The world and its people do not belong to us . We got a taste of our own actions. That’s what I mean-not that killing civilians is ever justified.

He was whining that he did not get anything for his 16 years of duty because he quit 4 years short of retirement. EVERYONE in the military knows what you get if you leave before 20 years! This guy makes me sick. He wants something extra because he rushed up the steps and shot Bin Ladan first. It sounds to me like he wanted that kill and the glory for himself and when he didn’t get what he thought he deserved he quit.

Posted on February 12, 2013 at 11:35amI hear what you are saying and don’t totally disagree, but in 16 years you know this guy did a lot more than just put a hole in Bin Laden. 16 years in the SEALS is bit different than 16 years in The Coast Guard. Considering the pressure these guys are under, I can certainly see a need for a pro rated system. Maybe you don’t get the full pension after 16, but you should get more than a boot in the ass.

Posted on February 12, 2013 at 11:44amI agree. I am a disabled Vietnam vet that did 12 years, we all know what we get if we get out before doing 20. I support and get involved in veterans issues, but I seldom run into the whiny “you owe me” types. I especially have never seen this type in seals, they are great people.
The seals was a volunteer branch in a service he volunteered in. He deserves everything he was promised, he does not get a retirement nobody gets if they do less than 20. It’s sad to see, but the “entitlement attitude” seems to be bleeding over into the military.
These remarks have nothing to do with my respect for his service and I DO believe an exception should be made to protect him and his family since he killed obl. Odumbo passed lifetime protection for himself and his family and this guy deserves it more.

Posted on February 12, 2013 at 12:47pmToltepeceno, I know that and I am grateful that he did volunteer. That’s why I’m proposing a pro rated system where a 12 year vet gets something less than a 16 year vet and a 16 year vet get something less than a 20 year vet. The country owes men like him (and you) a little more than a thank you though. If they would first balance the budget, we could afford things like that.
