What Are Those Green Ribbons People Were Wearing During the State of the Union Speech?

Those watching President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address Tuesday evening might have noticed some Congress members and guests wearing ribbons on their lapels.

Facing a divided Congress, Obama is expected to focus his speech on new initiatives designed to stimulate the U.S. economy. (Photo: Charles Dharapak-Pool/Getty Images)

The green ribbons were worn in honor of the victims of gun violence. ABC News reported that the ribbons were an effort put together by Rep. James Langevin (D-RI), who was himself in an accidental shooting victim. Lauren Fox with U.S. World News noted that the green and silver used on the ribbons represent the colors of Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn., where 20 children and six staff members were killed in December. A comment on the Wall Street Journal live blog said the ribbons were provided by the Newtown Action Alliance, a newly formed group focusing on gun violence prevention.

Noticeably, Vice President Joe Biden was wearing one such ribbon, while Speaker of the House John Boehner wasn’t.

At least 40 victims or family members of victims attended the speech, according to ABC.

If you see some wearing orange pins with the text “Stop Fighting, Start Fixing,” 40 or so Congress members who are part of the bipartisan group No labels are also wearing those, according to ABC.

Any ribbons for the THOUSANDS of Americans killed by illegal aliens?

Any ribbons for the troops coming back from MULTIPLE TOURS and on MULTIPLE PHARMS, to commit suicide?

No? I guess those American souls aren’t as… EXPLOITABLE for the LEFTIST republican/democrat (same thing) party.

20 years ago these same people were wearing aid ribbons. They took trillions of our money for aids. Today aids is spreading as fast as ever because the gays are back to the meth and bath house days. They never treated the cause of aids which is bad behaviour. Only disease that is totally preventable.
Ten years ago these same people had the livestrong bracelets on- nuff said.

Not mention all these shootings happen in states where only the rich can afford a carry permit even if available. Here on Oklahoma you start shooting and someone will shoot back. If I don’t have my Taurus Judge which is loaded with .410 and .45, I carry in my boot a Titan double barrel derringer with a .410 on top & a .45 in the bottom chamber. In most cases my wife has her .38 Lady Smith in her purse and she is a better shot than me with a revolver.

      heh.

Who friggin’ cares what they are? I’ll tell you what they aren’t, they’re not ribbons about leaving us alone, or respecting our rights, or even considering us anything except chattel. I don’t give a flying dingo’s kidney what they wear or don’t wear. It’s time to move outside of their system, en masse. These people see us as slaves and good only to provide them the power and riches they crave, what they wear or don’t wear is irrelevant, they live in lies and whatever the ribbons are supposed to mean, any ribbons, they will lie about and betray with the next cause they think is trendy.

Time to move outside the system. Start looking into Bitcoin folks. Bitcoin and cash, stop using banks, and stop leaving an electronic trail as much as possible. We need to stop feeding this beast, there are no other options left.

I think a good first step for gun control would be for the police, military, ATF, DOJ, military, Secret Service, White House, Capitol Building, FEMA, Homeland Security, and other law enforcement to turn in their guns and become “gun free zones” before applying that to everyone else. Let’s see how it goes for them first. Remember, they work for us.

To Progressives(communists), GREEN is the new RED.

But we freedom-loving God-fearing American patriots must undo 100 years of progressive communist subversion. Forget the politicians — they are commies (in closet or not) or they wouldn’t be in the running. Forget the elections — they are stolen in broad daylight. It starts with INDIVIDUAL AMERICANS to take back the future of America. And they must wake up our sleeping or stupefied fellows before bloody open-warfare become the last resort (and looks to be very soon now):

      Ronald Reagan, concerning gun control:

“You won’t get gun control by disarming law-abiding citizens. There’s only one way to get real gun control: Disarm the thugs and the criminals, lock them up and if you don’t actually throw away the key, at least lose it for a long time… It’s a nasty truth, but those who seek to inflict harm are not fazed by gun controllers. The green ribbon makes me sick, and demonstrates who this speech is designed for, the same people that will be going to 4 year old pre-school training? The state of the union is – we got our nose in your business, we like it there, and you can’t do anything about it? Applause, cheers, whistles, yah, whoooo, applause, cheers, yah, whistles? Wash, lather, rinse, repeat?

Holy dog shed what is this a letter to Santa Claus, or the “State of Dis-Union”?

Excuse me, my neighbors don’t want raising house values, because that means rising property taxes? Your stupid $1 minimum wage raise is not going to cover the rising costs of property taxes? How far is $200 a month going to get you – to “get ahead”?

The first few lines of the speech was the most disturbing, because political party interests generally pursue the “best interests of the country” so to suggest that we should just abandon our political aspirations of your party for “the good of the nation”, says it all?

No, I am not going to support your Santa Claus wish list, or pretend that even a margin of the proposals you suggest are even concievable.

Oh, he wants to improve the voting “experience”? We don’t want the Democrats “fixing” our election system, that is the job of the states? No President Obama, we will not applaud our legislatures grinning for the cameras, and we will not tolerate the infringement of our civil rights regarding the 2nd amendment.

Would love to tie a green ribbon around the neck of nearly everyone of them – and make that extremely tight. What a worthless bunch and they all act like a bunch of 1st graders and they are supposed to be running this country. God help us all.

33 1/3: No the green ribbons are just another example of the shallow morals and political propaganda that now represent the ” look at me/ I am one of the collective / I am as shallow as a rain puddle but I am one of the group gang ” mentality that now symbolizes the idiots who support Mr. Media Obama.

Bolshevik twerp. 20 kids were tragically killed two months ago. Meanwhile 18 veterans a day kill themselves because of what your beloved state puts them through. The guy whose pud you can’t seem to remove your lips from has killed 178 children with drones alone. Almost 40% of the lone gunman shooting sprees since Columbine were caused by the folks you and your ilk believe should be the only people to have such weapons. Tell me again how much you care for human life. We need to instill a logic test for people to vote.

Hey keaton, I have never worn a ribbon in my life. Instead of wearing a ribbon I carry a firearm that has a high capacity mag., so if heaven forbid one of those psychos are shooting at my fellow americans or at a group of children I would ask God to steady my aim and KILL the psycho SOB while you cower there peeing your pants and sucking your thumb.

Democrats say the ribbons is to honor the victims, but really they are ribbons of surrender. McCain and Grahamnesty wear them proudly.

And again: there’s no such thing as gun violence. Gun are inanimate objects therefore cannot be violent. There are people who are innocent victims of gang violence or felony crimes.

@SFRICH: Sorry but you are the inanimate idiot! Are you trying to say that guns pick themselves up and start shooting innocent people? I sure hope not. Sick minded criminals pick up guns and shoot innocent people. It’s the people who have access to “illegal” guns that need to be controlled. NOT the law abiding citizens of the Country. I truly don’t understand why you people are having such a difficult time understanding this. Maybe lack of common sense?
