Female Golfer Gets Bitten by Deadly Black Widow Spider During Tournament — What She Did Next Is Incredible
While playing in a pre-qualifier for the Women’s Australian Open in Yarralumla, Australia, Ladies European Tour rookie Daniela Holmqvist felt a sharp pain in her leg on the fourth hole. When she looked at her leg, she saw a black spider crawling off of her, which her caddies immediately identified as the deadly Black Widow.
The pain in her leg was instantaneous and severe. Holmqvist’s caddies told her that venom from a Black Widow can kill a child in just half an hour, so they knew something had to be done fast. Most people would probably head straight to the emergency room — but not Holmqvist.
As her leg started to swell, the golfer pulled a golf tee from her pocket, cut open her skin and squeezed the venom out. The Yahoo! Sports blog “Devil Ball Golf” speculates, quite accurately, that Holmqvist just may be the toughest golfer in the world.
“A clear fluid came out,” Holmqvist said. “It wasn’t the prettiest thing I’ve ever done, but I had to get as much of it out of me as possible.”
Then she finished the tournament, finishing out her round and shooting a 74. Unfortunately, she was four strokes short of qualifying, though she probably should’ve gotten a few strokes taken off for playing after getting bit by a Black Widow.
Holmqvist seems to be embracing her new nickname: “The spider woman.” Oh, and she also went to an actual doctor later on and is recovering nicely.
So there is “the shark” “pink panther” etc am I “the spider woman” now? Better than “the kangaroo lady” though..
— Daniela Holmqvist (@DHolmqvist) February 12, 2013
“So I went to see a doctor.. On a double dose of antibiotics and some other stuff 4 times per day. Also the wound needed some attention,” she tweeted, later adding: “I asked the doctor if I could do a workout today… Her response ‘the death-stare.’”

Posted on February 14, 2013 at 2:07pmActually what she did is dumb. Her risk of infection far outweighed the extremely low risk of death from a black widow bite. Even Rattlesnake bite are no longer treated like this due to the risk of infection. To label her a hero is inappropriate. Naive, and/or foolish would be more fitting.

The only people who die of infection these days are the impoverished and third world. Even if she got a bit infected on the course, she went to the doctor after the game. Infection takes quite a while to kill, it’s not spider poison.

Then I silently wept as I thought of the angst she must have been going through. But then, when she took the tee and dug it into her skin, I knew that we were definitely crossing into INCREDIBLE territory and that it would be the top story on The Blaze!

Posted on February 13, 2013 at 10:20pmDaddy WarbucksborrowedfromChina would have made her take a medical helicopter to the emergency room of the furtherest medical facility in the area-all the while signing her up for Medicaid, an Obama phone, EBT card, SNAP card, housing assistance vouchers and top it off with a healthy dose of Obamascare. Ms. Daniela Holmqvist advised the POTUS that she didn’t need emergency medical attention and she would get patched up when she finished up the round. The POTUS, completely shocked by her answer summoned 2 strapping SS Agents to assist. The agents were informed that Ms. Holmqvist was refusing to comply to his presidential directive. Ms. Holmqvist started to walk towards the next tee box when the POTUS, and agents, again approached her and the POTUS said “I am the President, I went to Harvard. I know what is best for you from womb to tomb and you WILL do as I command.” Ms. Holmqvist politely disagreed with the POTUS and just wanted to finish her golf game. Updated news reports reveal that Ms. Holmqvist was last seen struggling with two men wearing brown shirts trying to shove her in a white van. The reporter on scene described a chaotic disturbance and the 2 brown shirts succeeded in capturing Ms. Holmqvist. The spokesman for the POTUS provided a brief press conference and stated that Ms. Holmqvist will be spending approximately 3 months at the local FEMA Agenda21 Camp. The POTUS feels he is the only qualified man on Earth to make medical decisions. =) Get Well Daniel

Posted on February 13, 2013 at 8:42pmBlack widows aren’t typically deadly. In fact their bites are rarely fatal. Their bite is very painful, but it typically will just make you very sick. Obviously it’s more dangerous to children than to adults (still rarely fatal), but the people who said the “venom can kill a child in half an hour” or whatever didn’t have a clue as to what they were talking about.

Posted on February 13, 2013 at 9:25pmAlso the amount of venom would be pretty small. The clear liquid was likely serum that leaked into the area from inflammation. The risk of serious systemic infection from sticking a golf tee into your skin is a far greater risk for serious illness and subsequent death than a Black widow spider bite. By cutting the area of the bite, she also increased the likelihood of the venom entering the bloodstream. This is no longer a recommended method of even dealing with rattlesnake bites due to the risk of infection is greater than the risk of the snake venom.

It can be deadly to infants and the aged/infirmed though.. but as this woman is a seemingly healthy adult, she not only didn’t have anything to worry about, it’s absurd that they describe this woman as being brave and tough. It’s laughable!

Posted on February 14, 2013 at 11:15amI’m going with your posts … these spiders are not that dangerous
and cutting the spot of the bite is not of much value as the venom is immediately disapated into the body … just as with snake bites ( cutting and “sucking” out the venom) as far as I have read, does nothing.

Posted on February 13, 2013 at 10:43pmBrown Recluse is a very weak spider. They are a common house spider here in MO. Most bad bites are when people actually push the spiders fangs into the skin (weak). Also people effected in the way you described are allergic to the venom. I have been bitten several times. All most get is a rash. I am allergic to tarantulas and had to give mine away to a local school.

Posted on February 13, 2013 at 7:48pmGenerally, the black widow is not deadly. But for a small child, an older person or someone in poorer overall health, the bite may be very dangerous. And an allergic reaction can considerably complicate medical treatment.
Note that a number of deaths are reported every year from bites of Latrodectus mactans, but the spider has a very broad range. That means lots and lots of people are exposed to the critters because they are found in so many areas of the country.
Actually, the Black Widow’s bite is highly poisonous but can more-often-than-not be non-fatal. It is very potent and can kill a moderate-week immune system in hours, however a well healthy person can handle it’s bite with little issues.
This lady, doesn’t fit the profile to be highly at risk, but I imagine it the distraction cost her a few strokes.
If I was playing against her, I would ask her for 12 strokes.
