A pregnant teenager in Houston, Texas, is suing her parents, claiming that they are trying to coerce her to have an abortion. The 16-year-old, who is reportedly two months pregnant, is being represented by the Texas Center for Defense of Life (TCDL), a pro-life legal organization. For now, the girl and her unborn child are protected by a temporary restraining order, but the battle is far from over.
According to KPRC-TV, the eight-page lawsuit (read it in its entirety here) lists purported allegations waged by the girl, who is identified only by the initials R.E.K, as she’s a minor. In addition to verbal abuse, the document claims that the girl’s mother suggested potentially slipping her daughter an abortion pill.
The teen also alleges that her father threatened to take her to have an abortion, saying that the decision was final — one that the teen would have no say in.
ABC News has more about the troubling scenario:
Additionally, according to the lawsuit, R.E.K.’s parents took her phone and car as punishment for not having the procedure and kept her home from school. The father of the baby and the paternal grandmother have also purportedly been harassed by the teen’s father, Fox News reports.
“We were asking judge to stop them physically forcing her to have an abortion. She is legally protected,” said Stephen Casey, vice president of TCDL and an attorney on the case. “They cannot drag her to get an abortion, force an abortion on our client.”
Another hearing on the matter is scheduled to take place on Friday.

Is there something inherently wrong with setting a standard that says…
that one should not kill others?
How about a standard that says if parents (assuming they behave like parents should..)
it would be good for you, as their child, to listen to, to honor them, to value their input?
The only difficulty here belongs to the terminally selfish and self-serving so quit being a part of the problem and start being a part of the solution.

Feb. 13, 2013 at 12:43pmThe Bible is pretty specific about obeying your parents:
“If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son who will not obey the voice of his father or the voice of his mother, and, though they discipline him, will not listen to them, then his father and his mother shall take hold of him and bring him out to the elders of his city at the gate of the place where he lives, and they shall say to the elders of his city, ‘This our son is stubborn and rebellious; he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton and a drunkard.’ Then all the men of the city shall stone him to death with stones. So you shall purge the evil from your midst, and all Israel shall hear, and fear.” – Deuteronomy 21: 18-21

Justin Bieber, a massively popular pop star, was raised by his mother Pattie Mallette. Pattie now has her turn in the headlines as she has partnered with Movie to Movement to support Crisis Pregnancy Centers. Pattie has an intimate connection with CPCs. When Pattie found herself pregnant with Justin, she was unsure of where to turn. Instead of choosing to abort her baby, she made the courageous choice to give Justin life and a Crisis Pregnancy center helped support her in that life-affirming decision.
Pattie will be raising the money by hosting screenings of the award-winning pro-life movie, Crescendo. Pattie, an executive producer of the movie, plans to share her personal testimony at these screenings to encourage others who may be facing the same life-or-death decision for their preborn child.

If she is pregnant out of wedlock then she already dishonored her mother and father. Committing murder will not erase her sin but rather it would double down upon it. If her parents force a murder to occure by serving her up an abortifactant cocktail then the blood of the unborn child whose soul was known by Yah before it was in the womb is their sin to bear for all eternity.
I hope this young woman is out of her parents’ home and has a restraining order against them. Adoption is a better alternative than abortion whenever the young mother’s life is not in extreme medical danger.

Feb. 13, 2013 at 12:39pmI hope you realize that this is the exact same argument that can be made the other way, IE the girl wanting the abortion and the parents not. I’m pretty liberal and very pro-choice, i think the girl has the right to do what she wants with her body and her parents have no say. This would be true either way. I believe that pretty much all liberals would agree that the girl shouldn’t be forced to terminate the pregnancy. Liberals are Pro-Choice, not pro-abortion; there is a huge difference.

“you act like a pro-choice person.”
I think abortion should be avoided, but I also think it’s up the individual to decide. ”
She shouldn’t have the “choice” to murder the baby even if it is legal.”
Were you the one I discussed this with before? Abortion is not, by definition, murder. (Almost) no one actually thinks of abortion as murder, or a Holocaust, or that an embyo is equivalent to a baby. You might say so, but you’re exaggerating. Abortion is killing, but it’s not the same (morally, legally, or biblically) as killing a born person. Hence I think it should be avoided, and no one should EVER be forced into an abortion, but it’s the pregnant woman’s right to choose.
“Hypothetically of course. I realize she is fighting to keep it alive.”
And she should be allowed to do so. I pray that her family backs off of their stance and does their best to support their daughter and potential grandchild. Adoption is also an option.
@Txbren
“Yes she has responsibility, but so does the father.”
And he will be involved financially if an abortion or adoption is not chosen. He does not need to be involved personally. The teenage girl has no choice about personal involvement, no matter what decision is chosen.
It concerns me that you’re equating being a father or provider to “doing time” for a crime.

Raised his (only child) daughter by giving her everything she even ‘didn’t’ want, until she became so disgustingly spoiled my wife and I couldn’t even spend an evening with them anymore. By the time “princess” turned 13, every FRIDAY NIGHT(!) ‘dad’ would tell us that she “would just like to spend the night at home alone”. During the evening she would call ‘dad’ every 20 min. to ask stupid questions. I finally spoke up and told him that “princess” is monitoring where they are and when they will be coming home, because she’s not alone. That went over well…NOT. Well, “princess” turned 16 and PLANNED a pregnancy with ‘boyfriend’. She wanted to have boyfriend stay nights and have sex. Daddy said ‘NO’..so “princess” went to the police and made a statement that “Dad tried to murder me and my baby”. Went all the way through Court. “Princess” didn’t back down. She’s on her second baby (on yours and my dime), ‘sleeps’ with boyfriend, and since there was no indication of body marks or attempted murder, daddy was ONLY conviced of aggravated assault. The judge KNEW what ‘princess’ was pulling, but was forced by State law to believe her due to being a “child”.

There are still many women who have nightmares because their parents forced them to have abortions. The regret will never end.
Too bad the parents were not so devoted to making sure their child was not sexually active at such a young age. If they felt she was responsible enough to handle a sexual relationship at that age I guess they were wrong since she ended up getting pregnant anyway. Kids that age are not able to remember to take their vitamins much less a birth control pill on a regular basis.

This whole thing about doing what ever you want and ignoring everyone else until it hits the fan then it’s always the other guys fault because they do not want to pay for your selfish failures.
You know dumping you crap on someone else messes up their lives as well. Selfish wantabys can really bring you down in ways you can’t imagine.
If all of the respect for parents had come first this would not have happened. All you clowns that think you can ruin others lives and then try to point out some supposed cunumdrum in the Bible can kiss it if this kid yeah that’s right Iam not calling her a woman because she is not wants to make her own decisions and run her own life them it is time to leave the parents home.

Feb. 13, 2013 at 10:34amAre you serious in this comment? Really? A 16 year old girl is standing up to abuse and is standing against abortion as an option and you jump right to her becoming a free loader? Where is the praise for her decision to do what is right.
If this was a story about parents trying to prevent an abortion, people would be hurling insults at her decisions.

Feb. 13, 2013 at 10:15amI hope the father of the baby has the means to put a roof over her head. If the court rules in the girl’s favor the parents will probably kick her out of the house. It’s a shame, My daughter just had a baby 3 weeks ago, being a grandparent is the coolest thing in the world.

Feb. 13, 2013 at 10:10amI have a daughter in her teens, if she is old enough to have sex and want the baby, then she is old enough to move out and take care of it. I would not want to be “forced” to take care of my daughter & her child, that would be her responsibility. At 16, she is not financially sound to take care of the child, she should get the abortion and move on with her life. This is my opinion and I am sticking to it, everyone else may want her to have the child but you should know an unmarried, no car to drive 16 yr old can not take care of a child, food, clothing, diapers, health care, rent/mortgage, utility bills and every other issue that is out there.

Feb. 13, 2013 at 10:26amDid it ever occur to you that the baby could be given up for adoption rather than murdered? Is there anything in the rule book that the only options are murder or raising the baby herself?
Really that is as far as you can think?

Feb. 13, 2013 at 10:29amI don’t know. If she were my daughter I would still love her. Sure, I’d be disappointed in her very poor judgement, and I’d be having a “talk” with the boy, but I would want her to be safe and for the child to have a stable home. Yes, I’d encourage her to get her GED, get a job, and get a place as soon as possible and make a life for herself, and work with her to put her on a timeline to make that happen, but I can’t see myself just immediately kicking her out “You’re on your own, don’t come back!”

Feb. 13, 2013 at 10:30amI too have a teenaged daughter that got pregnant by a worthless older man who is now in jail on numerous criminal charges. My daughter is still living in our home and being home schooled to get her high school diploma. Ryder is a beautiful, laughing, happy, healthy 5 month old human being today. I thank God Almighty that we were raised better and have the integrity to make the hard adjustments required to provide for our family. The look in his eyes when he studies my face is worth more than my own convenience. Hope God will find a purpose for you.

I couldn’t agree with you more. But be ready to be condemned by all those people who don’t face what you do and who won’t give up anything to help. They are full of righteous indignation if you let your kid bear the fallout from their actions, but they don’t think they are required to do anything other than tell you how awful you are.

Feb. 13, 2013 at 11:31amWhy not just kill the teen too? Honor killings are a way of life in some cultures. Then the parents don’t have to raise any children anymore at all.
What sort of evil grandparent demands the death of a grandchild because it is inconvenient or too expensive. It’s vile, it’s macabre, it’s sickening, it’s self centered, and selfish. I can’t think of a crime more evil, or despicable, than infanticide because the child is a hassle.

Feb. 13, 2013 at 11:31amUmm, you make a LOT of assumptions about this kid. First off, the fact that she’s suing the parents means she’s willing to do what it takes to take care of her baby. Second, how about you actually learn to exist in the REAL WORLD for a minute. My wife was 16 when she had her first kid. At the time she was a straight-A student in school, had a job, and had a car. When her son was born she moved out of her parents’ house because there was rampant drug use going on in the home, she moved in with her boyfriend’s parents. SHE took care of the child… they just gave her a place to stay and watched him when SHE WENT TO WORK. SHE bought his clothes, SHE bought his diapers, SHE bought his food. Yes, she had help too, I’m not saying she was completely independent… but the point is, SHE DID THE BEST SHE COULD.
Numerous times, other people in the family tried to take her son away. One suggested adoption… every time she saw her… for THREE YEARS. Another tried to get her to sign her parental rights away. Before he was born, abortion was high on the list of options. She went against ALL OF THEM. Now he’s a happy, healthy, intelligent 13 year old. For just short of ten years I’ve raised him like he was my own. And if he wasn’t a part of this world, the world would be a different, sadder place. Yes he gets on my nerves ’cause he’s a teen and he thinks he knows everything… but I wouldn’t trade him for anything. And he’s here because A TEEN MOM CHOSE TO KEEP THEIR BABY.

Feb. 13, 2013 at 10:08amTaking her phone and car that they gave her is their right. They can even ground her until she tells them who the father is or moves out.
The father is legally financially responsible for the child, regardless of how bad her parents do not want to be grandparents.
But,if she gets a democrat judge, the judge will have the baby killed just out of principle. Got to everything to protect Roe v Wade.

Feb. 13, 2013 at 10:04amForcing a child into an abortion is as immoral as forcing a child into becoming a parent against her will. Both strip away the child’s rights. I expect both pro-lifers and pro-choicers would be supporting the girl and would be vehemently against the actions of the parents (assuming what the child has presented is truthful).
That said taking away “her” phone and “her” car as a punishment is not a crime (assuming that the parents are actually the ones who paid for them; not many 16-year olds are financially secure enough to pay their own car, and many can’t pay for a phone). Keeping her from gong to school is potentially a crime, howeber.

Feb. 13, 2013 at 10:12amSo according to your logic taking the girls car and phone for breaking no rule except she doesn’t want to kill her baby is justified? WOW! With all due respect that’s the most absurd thing I’ve heard today!

“So according to your logic taking the girls car and phone for breaking no rule except she doesn’t want to kill her baby is justified?”
I think you need to reread what I wrote. Where did I talk about justification? I said doing so is not a crime, but keeping her from attending school may be, and that would be grounds for a restraining order.

Feb. 13, 2013 at 10:58amDid she pay for the car, insurance and gas? Does she pay for the cell phone? If the answer is yes then the parents should not be touching them.Otherwise they are not hers. They belong to Mom & Dad. As such they can be revoked at any time.
As for the real issue. I have to girls. If one showed up pregnant at 16 I would be upset and want to talk to her about adoption options. definitely not Abortion . If you are old enough to play the game on your own you are old enough to deal with the consequences. And murder is not a viable strategy to get out of the situation.

One question: why is it that those who claim to be pro-choice tend to freak out when someone chooses to not murder her baby? Why is keeping the baby not an acceptable “choice” for the pro-abortion/murder crowd? Just wondering. ;)

Feb. 13, 2013 at 10:45amI don’t think the girl should have an abortion unless she wants one. She should carry the child to full-term and give him/her up for adoption. But she shouldn’t expect her parents to financially back her and her child if she chooses to keep her baby.

Feb. 13, 2013 at 12:49pmOn the other hand, if people don’t want women to get abortions, then why fight against birth control? Yes, children should wait till marriage for a sexually relationship, but as history has proven “waiting” is not working and never will.
