‘What Can I Say?’: Rubio Explains Now-Infamous Water Break During SOTU Response (Plus Interrupts Fox Interview for Second Drink)
It took 15 seconds for Fox’s Steve Doocy to ask the question so many were wondering after Marco Rubio’s “watergate” during his GOP response to Obama’s state of the union speech: “What’s the deal with the water bottle?”
In case you missed it, Rubio’s response was overshadowed by his dry mouth that required him to make an awkward reach for his water bottle off camera (watch it here). Rubio understood how much attention the move was garnering last night and even mocked himself. And on Wednesday, that continued.
On Wednesday morning, Rubio joined the “Fox and Friends” crew to explain his now-infamous water incident. He said that he would have rather reached for the water than not have been able to pronounce his words because his mouth was dry.
“Well, you know, listen, my mouth got dry and I had to get some water. You know, when you give a speech you have a podium and the water’s right there. But when you don’t, you start looking around, ‘Where am I going to get the water from?’ And I figured I’d be better off taking that water and taking the hit for hit than being unable to pronounce my words at the end of it. It had been a long day at work, we had already done an 18-minute recording in Spanish, and, you know, my mouth got dry. What can I say?”
And he even had a little more fun, interrupting the interview for another water break:
The rest of the interview was focuses on the substance of the response. You can watch his explanation of both below:
In CONTROL, Glenn Beck presents a passionate, fact-based case for guns that reveals why gun control isn’t really about controlling guns at all; it’s about controlling us. Posted on February 13, 2013 at 10:45amYou got to be kidding me!!! Please tell me how this non-event affects the well being of the country.
No wonder the country is sliding down the crapper. The guy takes a drink of water ( I think we all do it from time to time ) and the childish media makes a big issue of it? The media has become focused more on image and less on issues. Sometimes I wonder if they really care that we are turning into a third world country.

Posted on February 13, 2013 at 11:06amI for one, happen to love reading stories that break away from the political world every once in a while. I find that getting to caught up in reading about whats going on in the country and every little thing Obama says, is only hurting what really matters. Family, friends, and God.

Posted on February 13, 2013 at 11:08amWhat difference did it make that he took a drink of water anyway, at this point. They are pushing Rubio hard, just like they did McCain and Romney. He has been anointed and they are counting on fooling us once again. I held my nose last election, but unfortunately millions said enough and the liar got elected. If they run Rubio I think many more will not vote and hopefully Rand Paul will run as a Libertarian.
The beginning of Rubio’s speech was a bunch of pandering BS and the end was also. “God bless the President”? Really? He is doing his best to destroy the country and Rubio panders with God bless him. Now we know for sure Rubi has no cojones.

Posted on February 13, 2013 at 11:29amSenator Rubio has a sense of humor, is able to laugh at himself and does not appear to be a self-absorbed, arrogant, elitist jerk Marxist like BHO who has to have a teleprompter strapped to his face to even say “good morning.”
Let’s all raise our water bottles in honor of Senator Rubio and his willingness to speak the truth to
protect and defend the Constitution of the United States!
The MSM is trying to marginalize the message by making this “drink of water” more important than the facts and details associated with our nation’s real problems.
Do not be fooled – Rubio is a threat to the Marxist and BHO’s lap dog MSM.

Thank GOD! Somebody with some common sense & insight! You are absolutely right! I’m so sick of the media making a huge issue out of EVERY unimportant thing that happens when the entire world is about to “go down in flames”! If Fox News (because you KNOW the others won’t) would cover ALL the REAL TRUTH about what this criminal administration & the UN were up to, instead of trying to convince the people that these Communists “just don’t know what they’re doing”, they’d have enough news to cover without making a big deal of Rubio being nervous, getting “dry mouth” & having to take a drink of water with the mic right at his throat! Lord, help us all & protect us from these idiots!

They don’t want to offend them by scrutinizing them or talking bad about them and loose there seat on air force one or at the press conferences. In their eyes who cares if this country is going down the camode because of their coverage of non issues like Rubbio taking a drink of water in the middle of the republican response to the state of the union speech. Nothing would be said about it if it was the other way around.

Rubio, the new “darling” of the Republican (defunct) party. Notice how this guy has been in the forefront of everything the Republican party stands for lately?
They like him because of his nationality and don’t forget that catchy name of his.
When are the “powers that be” going to realize that you cannot invent a leader. That’s what they are trying to do with Rubio and guess what, it ain’t gonna work ! He’s a kid wanna-be.

Posted on February 13, 2013 at 10:54amthey “got him” because they know they’re folked, and they’re trying to regain some balance by appealing to the conservatives – AFTER the election! Rubio can do some good from within if he holds the BlueBloods feet to the fire, or exposes those that are still in it solely for their own political survival.
Unfortunately, I think the RINO’S might suck HIM in…

Posted on February 13, 2013 at 10:02amWhen is the GOP going to wake up to the need for stage management? He should have had an audience, he should have had a podium, he should have had a glass of water in the podium, theses are things any public speaker would see where there. If the teleprompter had gone dead he would have been dead in the water.

Posted on February 13, 2013 at 12:50pmMike Benton:
Spot on about the stage management. Look at what happened to Jindal a couple of years ago and now look at this Rubio fiasco. Why didn’t the Republicans have him behind a podium, which is where the vast majority of speeches are given from. Or put him behind an ornate desk and let him sit behind it. All presidential addresses given from the Oval Office over the years have been with the president seated behind his desk, so it’s not like giving a speech from behind a desk is not ‘presidential’.
In either case, there could be a glass of water readily available and all he would have to do is reach over, take a sip and set the glass back down – end of story and a non-issue. When you had to do what Rubio did, it looks like none of his ‘handlers’ has ever the slightest clue about how to present a party leader/potential presidential candidate. Or why didn’t Rubio himself make those decisions?
But, they probably spent days agonizing over which tie he should wear. And therein lies the problem…

Posted on February 13, 2013 at 9:28amI knew when I saw it that the substance would be overshadowed by the delivery. After Jindal’s response and Michele Bachmann’s response, I would have thought we could have been better prepared. It wasn’t just the reach, it was the lip smacking and mouth wiping and the pacing of it that were not good. I was expecting a smooth delivery from Rubio and was disappointed. I want a good message and a good messenger. Is that too much to ask?

We can’t put blinders on and disregard all criticism of them or we’ll end up in the same situation we’re in now again in 4 years. Your criticism of Rand is as valid as mine is of Rubio. The one thing we can’t do is allow the Republican establishment crown our next candidate for us like they did with Romney. We need to be more critical of our potential candidates than the left is.
