Former Chief of Staff Jack Lew Refuses to Say Who Personally Briefed Obama on Night of Benghazi Attack

Former White House chief of staff Jack Lew dodged a simple and direct line of questioning about who briefed the president on the night of the Benghazi terrorist attack as lawmakers grilled him on Capitol Hill Wednesday.

Sen. Richard Burr (R-N.C.) asked Lew to reveal who briefed President Barack Obama on the night of the terror attack. Just like everyone else who has been asked the same question, Lew said it wasn’t him who briefed Obama on Benghazi and would only say “the national security staff” did the briefing.

“In the armed services hearing last week, Secretary Panetta testified that following his and Gen. Dempsey’s five o’clock meeting on Sept. 11 after the Benghazi attack, they had no further contact with the White House and it was their understanding that it was you as chief of staff were the individual briefing the president,” Burr said. “Is that accurate?”

“Well, Senator, I did speak with the president that evening — the national security staff was working on the issue on a non-stop basis,” Lew responded.

“But who was actually briefing the president? Were you?” Burr interrupted.

Lew squirmed and replied: “I was not — I was in, in the room when the president was briefed, but I was not briefing the president.”

“Because John Brennan testified yesterday it wasn’t him. Secretary Panetta said it wasn’t him. In hearings, the ODNI Clapper said it wasn’t him. Acting DCI Mike Morell said it wasn’t him. Ambassador Kennedy said it wasn’t him, and the FBI said it wasn’t them,” the senator shot back.

“Let me ask you again. Who briefed the president on actually what was happening throughout this seven hour period?”

Lew said the “national security staff” was present, but wouldn’t say if CIA head nominee John Brennan was involved in the briefing and didn’t reveal which officials made up the group.

Outgoing Defense Secretary Leon Panneta testified last week that he spoke to Obama just once on the night of the Benghazi attack and he was absent the rest of the night.

  Regarding President Bush and 9-11…They put together a detailed timeline and showed exactly who did what and when they did it.
  
  I want to see this done with Obama and this issue as well.
  
  What little we have been allowed to know about this event shows us that Obama completely blew it as a military leader in a crisis situation right before the election and they didn’t want anyone to find out the details and the depth of his failure and the press -except for Fox News- went along with it. The press even went along with the administrations talking points about “politicizing the issue” and they are still sweeping the whole thing under the rug when this is clearly a very big deal.
  
  The lib’s in America seem to be OK with all this as long as their guy remains in office and gives them gay marriage, wealth redistribution, abortion on demand, gun control, etc…
  
  You guys need to wake up and take heed to Clint Eastwood’s advice and just cut him loose…he’s taking us down…can’t you see it…???

  I understand that Republicans are trying to get some traction on this thing and blame President Obama. I get that. But it’s a little silly isn’t it? Yes, the President of the United States is Commander in Chief. But Presidents, at least if they’re smart, don’t try to personally direct military actions. That’s absurd.
  
  They depend on the military. There must be 100 levels of command between the President of the United States and the personnel who might have been directly involved with shooting at the enemy. Do you really want or expect the President of the United States personally handling and directing every firefight, every police action at a bank robbery, or Seal action in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Syria? I hope you don’t. That would be stupid.
  
  What exactly what can the President do except direct the commanders in the field to do everything they can to protect Americans? Do you really expect the President to tell commanders in the field how to do their job?

  I would say it is closer to 20. If it was on off the books operation as has been alleged it would be as few 5 or so. Twenty is a high number & includes senior enlisted personnel & the #2 of various echelons. Most people in the Armed Services can name their Commanding Officer & the 3 to 7 people between that officer & the Service Secretary. So no, not that many people.
  
  So Meteors you are non-prior or it is obvious why you left.

  Now, isn’t that what you try to constantly blame Reagan doing in Beirut? Oddly yet again tonight in another story after I have explained more than once that was an International Peace Keeping Force decision. Oh yeah, Two buildings there were struck in the attack two minutes apart. The only one you continue to try to blame on Reagan is the first where 290 died, not 63, and they included 220 Marines, 15 Sailors, 3 Soldiers, and the remainder were French Military. The other attack hit the French barracks killing 58 paratroopers and 5 civilians. The bombing at the U.S. Embassy in Yemen was actually outside when militants dressed in military uniforms set off two car bombs. No Americans were killed or injured, but ten civilians were and six of the militants were killed in their own blasts. Both incidents were investigated quickly and conclusions drawn. As well, answers were provided to the press. Neither was part of any cover up. But, Benghazi? Even the survivors are not talking, while General officers were relieved of duty for trying to send troops to respond. You lie!

  Since when is someone an idiot for getting a drink while talking on camera. I have seen that many many times and it was never used as reason to degrade someone. I have worked in call centers in my time and when you are talking a lot and your mouth gets dry, that leads to coughing. Getting a drink to “wet your whistle” is the only instantly effective way to avoid the coughing. I think your claim (and that of CNN) is without value.

  2. If you are going to take out a truck bomb or car bomb speeding toward you , you have a better chance stopping it at a distance with Ma Duece (.50 calibre) or other crew served weapon. Again this goes to ROE which are influenced by the President & Congress. This was the same Congress that loved Daniel Ortega & wanted to have his baby. This was the same Congress that wanted to bring 1/2 the troops hoe from Europe at the height of the Cold War. They proposed exactly that. This was the Boland Amendment Congress.   The truth will eventually stumble into the light, I’m sure of that. It will take persistance and time just as it did in the Watergate scandal (although that affair did not have the potential magnitude that this one does).

  That was WELL said. It does define a person’s character when they subscribe to a single standard, as opposed to a double standard. I am sure F&B was/is totally against Enhanced Interrogation Techniques (Waterboarding), which does no harm because it was under Bush’s watch. But F&B supports drone strikes which kills guilty & innocent alike in one blast, and incidently, is also a method that Obama seems to think is alright to employ against Americans abroad without due process.
  
  What say you F&B….do you support drone strikes? Do you support strikes against Americans abroad without due process?

  I’m now about convinced you are really a kind of agent provocateur who loves making commiequeers* look stupid by saying inane stuff supposedly coming from the likes of them. So the MURDER of an AMBASSADOR and the RAPE of our Embassy, traditionally causes for DECLARATIONS OF WAR, is less important, say then who “outed” Valery Plame? Scooter Libby did TIME for THAT! Gun running to Syria is less important than “Arms for Hostages”? Don’t you Anti-War Anti-Bushie types WANT to know if Pharoah BO and our AMBASSADOR were pulling a Reagan/Ollie North?
  The Observant Student will note the discongency and cognitive dissonance in Rimstone’s “no one cares”. Obviously both Firestone and other people do or there would be no point to Rimfire’s STATING it, eh?

  FIRE is just a typical Obama Troll spewing their parroted Big Lies. Like that ” the video caused all of the riots ” and ” we are the most transparent administration ” ( while I hide my school records )…these guys are all 99% BS and if it weren’t for their hijacking of the MSM , the Obama crowd would have been run out of town during the OWS Occupations…
