‘Why Accept That It Is The Government’s Job to Do Anything?’ (Plus Other Responses to Obama’s Speech Made By TheBlaze Audience)
Coverage of President Barack Obama’s state of the union speech Tuesday sparked a lively debate among readers of TheBlaze, especially those who checked out our side-by-side comparison of key points made by Obama, Sen. Marco Rubio and Sen. Rand Paul.
To keep the discussion going, we’ve collected some of the comments you made and are giving you your say in this article (please note that we did not edit the comments).
Here you go:
Toledofan:
There are many different ways to solve today’s problems and, honestly, although somewhat painful today, if left unattended they will be more painful as time goes on. So, the main idea from the Democrats is just to keep kicking the can down the road, spend some more, worry about it later. The other side is to start to address the problems today, implement the solutions and move ahead to kick-start the economy and get out of the way. The burden becomes the citizens who can’t, won’t, or just don’t want to do anything because they feel they are owed. As long as the Democrats are in charge and Obama is President, nothing will change.
AmericaMustBeFree:
This is a remark Obama made from Bush’s last State of the Union address… “Imagine if next year, the entire nation had a president they could believe in. A president who rallied all Americans around a common purpose. That’s the kind of president we need in this country.” Yes, Mr. Obama. just imagine if you took your own words and did exactly what you said.. Instead, you have divided a nation…
Digital Dreamer:
Rubio is the only one that any of us should be backing.
Rand is a waste of time. Not because he doesn’t make sense on certain points but because he’s perceived as an extremist .His father is a consumate liability. He’s too connected to the much maligned Tea Party, whereas Rubio only has mild ties to the organization. Rubio is young, hispanic, yet caucasian and accessible to the conservative base. He’s articulate, smart, charismatic and is the perfect foil to the desperate ethnicity/racial grab the democrats employed with Obama. Hes’ the smart choice.
Those that delusionally cry out that Rubio is a “rhino” or a liberal-in-conservative’s clothing and demand that Rand should be the conservative party representative are unreasonable and foolish. He has zero chance of capturing the liberal demographics, and Rand has almost no traction in minority groups. Rubio *is* a cuban-american, and, as such, has the marketability to survive both the left’s smearing of him on the news, as well as gaining a sizeable hispanic support based on his ethnicity alone.
However his viability as a candidate will ONLY happen if conservatives stop bickering, and work together to protect his future candidacy (vehemently and diligently if necessary). If conservatives like many posters on this forum continue to split the conservative base by chasing “empty” or weak candidates that have no chance of winning an election, then you’ll only succeed engendering more liberal victories.
Libertarian:
There is a huge philosophical difference between Rubio and Paul. One is an avid constitutionalist, the other toes the line of Republican establishment with a touch of conservatism. One obeys the constitution as it was meant to be the other will toe the line of the Republican Party DESPITE what the constitution says.
As the years go by toward 2016 you will see Rubio turn into an Eric Cantor or John Boehner because the establishment has picked their man for 2016. Much like unionism, the Republican Party picks by seniority not by record or philosophy.
Watch Karl Rove and the ilk under the (R) tag, which has been equally culpable in destroying our constitution back Rubio or blue dog Democrat John Huntsman Jr in 2016.
GAC1218:
Why accept that it is the government’s job to do anything?
Reagan had it right, “government is not the solution but the problem”.
Free market doesn’t work with government intervention.
- The cost of a college education has been driven through the roof because of pell grants and interest free government loans. Injecting false money into the system.
-Energy should not be regulated by a government that refuses to give permits to companies. Supply and demand should dictate how much oil and natural gas is produced.
(government debt makes your gasoline 3.50/gallon instead of $2.10)
- Why does the gov. spend money on medical research and scientific research? That should be private money.
- $9/ hr min. wage is a cover for a 24% increase in income tax collected.
- The housing bubble and subsequent collapse was caused by government policy.
- High corporate tax drives business out of this country.
- No cross state line competition of insurance companies drives up our costs.
- Innovation should be driven by independent money. Gov. has no business using your money to incentivize or reward innovation. (It’s all just a congressional slush pool anyway)
When you socialize a free market you destroy the free market, and when the money runs out you also destroy the social republic. It’s lose, lose.
The government has stepped to far accross the line. It’s time for the people to stand up and demand they remove themselves from our private lives.
Samurai2112:
On minimum wage…If $9 is good why not round it up to $10, why not $20 per hour and let them not only live above poverty but be middle class? Why not a minimum of $100 per hour and we can all be upper middle class? This is the fallacy of the minimum wage argument. Also don’t forget a lot of union contracts are tied to the minimum wage and they would all get an automatic wage increase.
Wal-Mart in ND is paying $17 for entry workers and still can not find people to fill. Same problem with service industry like restaurants etc they just get someone hired and trained only to loose to someone else paying more. The even larger problem is not enough housing for new workers coming into the area. The ECONOMY in that state is BOOMING, that is what drives higher wages not some set number from the Gov. He who shall not be named could learn something on how the economy really works and apply it to the whole country. Unfortunately it goes against everything he believes.
Edotdot:
Whatever happens in the next two election cycles, if we are able to take back the senate and then the Whitehouse, it will be under the Republican banner… if we don’t quit nitpicking we will stay right where we are now, feckless to pull back any of Obama’s and his merry band of progressives crap. It just might be that we can’t right our nation on the first or second attempt but we can pull her back from the brink. Please quit name-calling, grow up, and get a dose of reality!

I keep on analyzing things I have just read and one thing seems can’t leave me alone. Maybe it is extremely convenient for some group of people to leave everything the way it is right now, to leave people with unsolved problems? Looks like I might not be mistaken and this is the saddest thing ever. It is like you know there are so many people angry with too high rates for payday loans ( https://paydayloansat.com/ ) and government seems to understand the issue, but at the end of the day they do nothing simply because they do not want to lose the profit. I guess same thing happens to every aspect of problems we have

Posted on February 14, 2013 at 12:36pmMinimum government equals maximum private growth.
Simplify and reform the tax code for maximum growth for all. Tax first 25K at 100%. Those are the people who use gov’t, let them pay for it. Tax 25K to 250K at 50%. Income over 250K, no tax. All those lazy people who get to a point in careers where they think it’s good enough to slack off because they’re earning six figures, because there’s no motivation to work hard for family and country…all of a sudden they’ll have motivation to work harder. Personal success is public patriotism.
On the low end, labor costs to high. I own my own chain of businesses, and I can tell you this is too true. Eliminate the minimum wage and will drive down costs across the board. It’s not just minimum wage workers who earn too much for what they contribute. Eliminate the min wage, and not only will 7.75 workers go down to 2 or 3 to bring costs in line with the international market…but 20/hour workers will drop to 10, etc. lower costs for everyone.

Posted on February 13, 2013 at 10:46pmI only have one major issue with any of what was said and it’s with GAC1218.
“Why does the gov. spend money on medical research and scientific research? That should be private money.”
GAC1218, you are wrong on this one. I don’t pretend to know the depth of your knowledge on the subject, however I must disagree with the above statement on its face.
Government support of research leads to all sorts of useful things that would not otherwise be pursued by private investment and I will attempt to explain why.
This is one case where the private market does poorly, they generally will not invest large amounts of money unless they consider the chances of turning a profit on that very expensive research to be pretty darn good. Consider some of what we’ve gotten out of the space program. Nobody saw a market for something like Velcro until it had already been in use by NASA. No one saw a use for DuPonts Nylon, or artificial rubber until they had been invented and put into widespread government use (WWII).
Chemists sometimes work an entire career for a drug company and NEVER create a chemical that turns into a viable drug, or even produces research into a viable drug down the line.
What government should NOT do is subsidize the sale/use of these inventions (solar energy or wind). Once it’s been invented it either survives the market via its own value, or it dies. Companies that receive this money should have to pay it back.

Posted on February 13, 2013 at 8:34pmI agree with GAC1218. The ONLY raison d’etre FOR ANY Government (and this from Jefferson in the Declaration, the whole argument FOR an AMERICAN Government) is to SECURE God Endowed Unalienable Individual Rights.
NO other JOB!
I call this the “‘Gunsmoke’ Principle of Radical Jeffersonian Extremely Limited Government.”
Like Marshal Matt Dillon on “Gunsmoke” Government, especially The FEDERAL Government exists SOLELY to HANG HORSE THIEVES! Either Domestic ones like Barney Madoff, or Foreign ones like Bin Ladin. THAT’s IT. A budget for Bullets, Horseshoes and a Rope is ALL they need.

Imagine Lucifer from Pink Bandits in transgendered sandals just “friended” you, and all his imaginary friends from around the world created with a python script (computer language)) on his laptop?
Par for the course, I believe those worth hearing, get repeated, or they effect people who are listened to. There is a reason why we all don’t make $100 an hour? Some employer along the way, screwed it up for the rest of us? Somebody got greedy and said, eh, I know someone who will do that for next to nothing, let me bid on the job? That’s an ethical problem, or a lack of creativity in the sales department, because we all know the higher end of the economy is based on sales, not costs of living? You can put your head in the sand all you want with that philosphical chew toy, and at the end of the day you will be discussing currency wars?
Government is required to do the things we paid them to do, or give us our money back? Liberal and Conservative media do not want you reading blogs, and they will tell you so, that’s why I thank Glenn for every day he has his up there?

Posted on February 13, 2013 at 5:35pmGovernment at every level is a better approach for providing any number of social goods from defense, law enforcement, fire fighting to education and healthcare. As there can be no exception that given similar levels of effectiveness and efficiency, creation of profit will reduce the amount or quality of the services provided. If you want to really consider why our healthcare costs twice per capita than the rest of the world you need only look at the failure of an economic model that has non-profit hospitals surrounded by for profit insurance companies, pharmaceutical companies, medical equipment companies, etc. And really take the time to research how significantly lower the administrative cost of Medicare and Medicaid are when compared to for profit health insurance, let along the fact that neither must provide a ROI to investors. The proof was made very clear when the for profit insurance companies required significantly more per Medicare recipient within their pilot managed care programs. The for profit health care insurance companies would charge significantly more to take on the risk pool and claims experience for the Medicare population.

Posted on February 13, 2013 at 3:29pmThe problem of too much government stems directly from the US constitution. The constitution was drafted because the Articles of Confederation were seen as creating a too weak central government. As presidents like Jackson, Polk, Lincoln, both Roosevelts and others tried to get more power for themselves, they found justification for it in the constitution.
The answer is to repeal the current constitution and return to America’s original form of independent government, the Articles of Confederation. That will give us a weak central government with a lot more power and freedom for the states and the individual.

Posted on February 13, 2013 at 3:10pmObama has proven time and time again one major point… He either doesn’t understand anything from an executive level… OR He does understand and all of what he is doing is by design…
Either way, it should disqualify him from ANY form of leadership…
His economic policies would not keep a McDonald’s afloat, let alone a country of over 350 million people where 1/2 of them get some sort of government hand-out….
The problem is NOT just Obama… If it were, the solution would be simple… The problem is that ALL of our politicians think that they are above their laws, and that all the laws they write should not apply to them… THAT is where it all started going wrong… Until we fix that, none of this will EVER get better…
And no matter WHICH party is in charge, over 4 years without passing a BUDGET (which is REQUIRED to be passed EVERY year, supposedly) is NOT something that should be tolerated..
I mean, without a budget, who can even say HOW MUCH money we are spending, let alone how much of it is being WASTED…
POLITICIANS need to be reminded that THEY WORK FOR US!! ANYONE who lets them forget that, does not deserve to BE AN AMERICAN!!!

Unfortunately I think the only way they will be reminded of the fact that they work for us would be by force at this point. Which in turn I have to believe they know this, and that is why they are pushing the first steps of major gun control.
Our guberment is growing more, and more afraid of the citizens IMO, hence the tighter, and tighter police state to maintain their arrogant, self righteous, warped sense of power.

D’s want to go off the cliff at 100 mph and the R at 55. Our form of government will only work for a moral and just people, perhaps that is the problem. I accept Obama is a socialist I am surprised the American people are getting that way. But what can we expect with over 50 years of socialist indoctrination in our government (not public) schools along with a culture in moral decline as reflected by Hollywood and the MSM. We no longer have public schools just government indoctrination centers. The last problem is we have a media that reports stories to support their leftest narrative instead of news. One example is how many stories are there about shootings that save life’s or are the result of self defense or stopping a crime. So much of what is going on does not support the Narrative. So instead of having NEWS organizations we have Narrative support organizations.
