Astonishing Video Shows Illinois Officer Freeing Two Tangled Deer…by Shooting Their Antlers Apart
Incredible video, uploaded to YouTube on Wednesday, reportedly shows an Illinois officer using his service weapon to shoot apart the antlers of two bucks who had become extremely tangled during a fight.
The bucks can be seen writhing and struggling to get free, but their efforts are fruitless. A spokesman for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources told The Daily Mail that the bucks likely would have died if they were unable to free themselves.
“He’s worn out, he’s going to give you a shot,” one officer tells the one wielding his weapon. An Illinois conservation police officer, a state trooper and a Will County Forest Preserve officer all responded to the scene.
“Take it if you can,” one officer can be heard saying, before he fires the first shot. Shockingly, the video shows deer don”t seem too frightened by the sound of the gunshot and only flinch slightly. Standing feet from the two bucks, the officer takes four shots to break the antler. Once freed, the two deer jump up and sprint away.
“Good shot, good job,” an officer says.
More from The Daily Mail:
The officers discuss potentially having to put the animal down due to possible injuries during the scuffle though no update on its condition was provided.
“Illinois Dept. of Natural Resources law enforcement officers are periodically alerted to these types of instances. While not common, it happens,” the department said in an email to MailOnline.
“Fights among male deer are common and occasionally their antlers become entangled. Sometimes the deer are able to free themselves…sometimes not, and in those instances we have found deer which become locked together and perish before someone comes along to find and possibly free them.”
Reaction to the video posted by the department’s Facebook page is varied with some crying animal abuse and others praising the sharp shooting that potentially spared both animals’ their lives.

Posted on February 15, 2013 at 10:56amEvil gun! It had more than one bullet!
So…if I hit one of those deer with my car and total it, can I sue the state for damages? After all if nature ran it’s course, the animal wouldn’t have been alive to run in front of my car.
Make as much sense as guns making people kill!

Posted on February 14, 2013 at 10:20pmHaving helped detangle a couple of deer from fences, before, I say the safest way for GOOD SHOT is to shot the antlers. Deer have trouble discerning “helping hands”.
This can be tough for well-domesticated animals who are in a strenuous bind.

Posted on February 14, 2013 at 8:53pmLater at the local deer pub….”I’m telling you guys this guy had us in his sites. We were locked together and couldn’t move. He walked right up to us and took 3 or 4 shots. I thought I was a dead-deer. But, not only did he miss both of us but one of his shots actually freed us from each other, it was a 1 in a million shot. I was praying for God to get me through this and he did. God must have made him a terrible shot.”
“Oh Buck you’re so full of it. No one believes you.”

Posted on February 14, 2013 at 6:46pmWay to go!
These days, it seems the standard operating procedure against innocent animals in distress or lost their way is simply to open fire without a second of hesitation, no questions asked.
It is encouraging to see someone go to some personal trouble to preserve lives.

Posted on February 14, 2013 at 6:03pmMy degree is in Zoology, and even with the over-population, I would have done the same thing. It would have been a cool shot to take.
How is it that the overpopulation was allowed to happen? The Oklahoma the Department of Wildlife Conservation will loosen the rules in an area where the deer population expands too rapidly. It sounds as if the Illinois Department of Natural Resources if not paying attention. You would think that in a state with so much poverty, and so many deer, that they would see the obvious solution.

Posted on February 14, 2013 at 5:22pmOne buck deer can mate with dozens of females every year. The biggest, strongest and most dominant bucks get the harem so to speak. The antlers are dropped every year and grow back covered in blood rich velvet which eventually sheds and leaves the hard antler. Buck deer have been known to attack humans while in the rut. Nice story.

Posted on February 14, 2013 at 5:17pmIt’s a shame that Illinois only allows one buck per season. Down here in SC, if I came across two big bucks locked up like that, it would be while they are in rut; which happens to be in the middle of deer season. With no limits on the number of bucks I can kill, I’d have two fine trophies and a lot of cubed steak and hamburger. BTW, those are two excellent contributors to the gene pool, since they exhibit great antler mass and strength, while doing just what bucks are supposed to do.

Posted on February 14, 2013 at 5:04pmNice shootin. Only other way is to saw them off. They will grow back. I kinda thought he might have hit one of them though. Some areas are so overrun with deer they are a nuisance. Some places they have some kind of wasting disease they have died out and are slowly making a comeback. That’s why they have hunting seasons. To cull them out.
