Hellish Carnival Cruise Finally Over As Ship Docks in Mobile, Ala.

The cruise ship Carnival Triumph is towed towards Mobile Bay near Dauphin Island, Ala., Thursday, Feb. 14, 2013. The ship with over 1,000 passengers aboard has been idled for nearly a week in the Gulf of Mexico following an engine room fire. Credit: AP
MOBILE, Ala. (AP) — Carnival Cruise Lines’ CEO is apologizing to guests for the poor conditions aboard the disabled ship that was adrift at sea for days.
Gerry Cahill said at a news conference Thursday night as the Triumph was docking in Mobile, Ala., that he appreciated the patience of the 3,000 passengers on board.
He says Carnival prides itself on providing people with a great vacation “and clearly we failed in this particular case.”
He says he plans to go aboard the ship and personally apologize to passengers.
Miserable passengers told stories of overflowing toilets, food shortages, foul odors and dangerously dark passageways.
As the ship docked, anxious passengers were lining the decks waving, cheering loudly and whistling to those on shore.

Posted on February 15, 2013 at 12:44pmThe squalor that these passengers endured was entirely unnecessary. It all was a result of the environmentalist’s brainwashing. The people should have been told to pee an poop in bags and then empty the contents into the ocean. 3000 people’s waste would have been literally a drop in the ocean. Just think about how many fish, and dolphins and whales do the same in the ocean every single day! Our excrement is just as “natural” as theirs!

Posted on February 15, 2013 at 9:35amWhy didn’t they send another ship, and transfer the passengers to safe ship? Why where they left on a crippled ship so long with getting out there with other ships and helicopters?

Posted on February 15, 2013 at 8:05amMedia overhype, as usual. For the inconvenience of a spoiled vacation, Carnival has amply compensated these folks. From what I’ve heard, most people appreciated the situation and managed just fine for the most part. But there are always those who cannot cope with things going wrong. Nobody died, nobody was even hurt. The worst part was a foul odor and toiletry inconveniences. Hardly what I would describe as “hellish.” Hundreds of cruise ship sailings occur every month with no problems whatsoever…I just got back from one. This incident in the news doesn’t deter me one little bit from going again. It’s still the best value for a vacation.

Posted on February 15, 2013 at 1:12amWhenever I went to the Bahamas I would see the ships docked out from the straw market and didn’t once want to be trapped on a boat. I like the freedom of staying where I please for as long as I please. When I go to islands or Europe I like to hang around people and places not on the normal itinerary. I remember coming in to Nassau airport on a twin engine prop and leaving a dust trail. Drinking ALL the wine at the Cable Beach Hotel and Casino. Dancing to reggae Cindy Lauper tunes and junkaroo till dawn. Then the trip into the bush with the natives. Gas war at Jamaica. Rebels. Like a fast Clash song.
Sail on a big boat all you want. Not me.

Posted on February 15, 2013 at 12:46amIf a glass-enclosed gang plank was designed for their exit off of the ship, then why wasn’t there a gangway designed to safely evacuate people ship-to-ship while at sea?

Posted on February 15, 2013 at 3:35amI have sailed on a Carnival cruise ship and can appreciate the challenges presented. It is my understanding that they were able to pull another cruise ship alongside & board supplies. I think it’s time for ships to be equipped with a Plan B. Especially for the safety of passengers in a boat that is listing. Perhaps docking a smaller shuttle ship alongside would be more reasonable? To not have an evacuation plan and put passengers at risk is just irresponsible. Compared to having a phenomenal zipline and rock climbing wall available onboard, this is something that is actually essential (just my opinion).

The real test is not how the crew reacts to a fire but the proper maintenance to not
have a fire in the first place.

Posted on February 15, 2013 at 4:22amIt’s not real easy to sue Carnival, they are a big company with a lot of political sway in states that depend on tourism for their economy. I know Carnival requires passengers to agree to arbitration when they buy their tickets (it’s in the fine print). You also agree to the arbitrator being chosen by carnival. Finally, you agree that you will use florida law and carnival’s choice of venue (florida). So, if you are from California then you have to travel a bit in order to make your case to a guy who’s getting paid by and was chosen by carnival in hopes of proving that they are liable according to florida’s law which was written by guys who had their campaigns paid for by carnival. Oh, and you also have to pay for costs and I think you agree on a maximum amount of liability. So, you lose 2 children at sea, but the maximum payout is 200k. You should understand that all of this free legal information is intended to make fun of you far right conservatives who think the corporations are awesome job creators and think opposing regulations that protect consumers and employees is good for america.

Posted on February 14, 2013 at 11:57pmWe could hear the ship’s horn from our house as the ship docked. I know I’d be ready to jump over the side, just to get the hell off that damn boat. Can’t figure out why they didn’t let passengers off at nearest port, then tow empty ship to dry docks in Mobile for repairs.

Posted on February 15, 2013 at 3:05amWhen the fire started, they were closer to Mexico and the original plan was to tow the boat there (can’t remember which city?) but before a tow boat could reach them, the currents pushed them north so that they ended up closer to Mobile by the time the tugboats reached them.

Posted on February 14, 2013 at 11:51pmI hereby withdraw all comparisons I might have made between the Triumph’s cruise and the Obama administration. The Carnival CEO just held a press conference and issued sincere abject apologies, as well as accepting personal responsibility for the whole thing.

Posted on February 14, 2013 at 11:15pmSurely there must be a better way to deal with these situations both technologically in regards to systems/backup systems on the ships, and with evacuation measures. With all that humanity is capable of these days is this really the best we can do?
