High School Goalie Quits Team in Most Dramatic Way: Scores on His Own Team, Flips Off Coaches, Then Leaves
There are epic ways to quit your job. Then there are epic ways to quit a team. Austin Krause just showed the world one way to do the latter.
Krause is (or was) a senior goalie at Farmington High School in Minnesota. It was senior night on Tuesday, and Krause got the start — a rarer occurence this season. And that was part of the problem: Krause had been losing playing time this season to a sophomore he’s not too fond of.
We’ll let him tell you in his own words what he decided to do to make his point (courtesy of the Farmington Independent):
“They played this sophomore goalie for the starter, he was terrible, I would try and talk to the coaches about this and tell them I want playing time but they never really listen to me or gave me a chance to show them that I’m a better goalie but still wouldn’t trust me so I had it it with I asked a few of my players if they care if I did it and they didn’t care they thought it would be funny so at the third period they dumped it in I stopped it put in my net started to skate off then flicked the coaches not the team the coaches then I saluted them then got off.”
And of course it was caught on video:
It seems Krause does have the support of some of the parents. One anonymous one told the Independent that a group of older players have been demoted to make way for some freshmen.
βKrause has been the goalie for the ‘A’ team all through youth hockey and put in so many hours and been a great goalie and never caused any trouble,β the parent said. βHe got the shaft and got it taken away from him.
βItβs nothing against the younger kids, itβs not their decision. Theyβre good players, but theyβre not any better than the juniors and seniors theyβre replacing.β
By the way, the wholeΒ βI quitΒ βstunt was costly. The own-goal came with 3:13 remaining in the third period and tied the game 2-2. The other team then scored about a minute later an won 3-2.
As for the district, they released this statement:
βThis action has had a immediate and dramatic impact on the Farmington boys hockey team and the entire Farmington community. The district is taking the proper steps to investigate the incident and will take appropriate action in line with school policy. Student privacy regulations prevent any further release of information regarding this matter.
βOur focus is on in supporting the players and coaches in our hockey program and the successful completion of their season.β

Posted on February 14, 2013 at 1:15pmIf you defend, or try to justify the actions of this kid, then you must defend ANY player in ANY sport who disagrees with their coach for ANY reason, then betrays their teammates by sabotaging a game, finishing it off with an obscene gesture which makes them somehow feel superior while bringing shame upon himself and his family. He is a child, and participates in a high school sport under an adult coach.
Only if his skills approach those of Patrick Roy should college scouts overlook his bad attitude and problems with authority. In these times, though, maybe it won’t much matter……

Posted on February 14, 2013 at 12:53pmClearly, they were winning with him (they were ahead when he tied the game), which begs the question why wasn’t he playing more in the other games (they sure weren’t winning them all with the other goalie)… and icing on the cake, they lost without him (it was tied when he left and they didn’t win without him).
…on the other hand he confirmed his level of maturity was not what they were expecting from a TEAM player… he is just another me, me, me… only time will tell if he goes Dorner on someone who he thinks wronged him in the future… tic toc… tic toc… tic boom.

Posted on February 14, 2013 at 12:46pmThis just happened to my son for the past 3 months on his school team.It was unbearable that the jerk dads played their mediocre sons instead. We could have won the championships. I told him daily to act like Tim Tebow and prayed and prayed and prayed he wouldn’t do what this kid did!!!. It was THE worse 3 months ever. He handled it with integrity and honor and I am more proud of him for doing that than being good at his sport. I know it will pay off in the end.
I asked him if he wanted to play in the dad/son end of season party. He asked,”Will dad and I have to sit out the entire game?” (He is very funny!!) I don’t think I have to torture him for that. He finished by being like Tim Tebow.

Posted on February 14, 2013 at 12:54pmNext time I will not force my kid to stick it out. It really was too much to ask of a young man. If my kid is being abused by jealous dads, I shouldn’t make him suffer that abuse. He can resign quietly or something. I don’t know. But, it’s not gonna happen ever again. Also, I meant that I am not going to force him to go to the party.

Posted on February 14, 2013 at 12:07pmThe PC crowd has ruined this country. I applaud his actions. It might not change anything, but darn important to him that he show everyone his disapproval of his coach. We’ve all seen the political games played in high school athletics. I hope his coach was humiliated.

Posted on February 14, 2013 at 12:03pmI get that it’s frustrating to lose playing time to people you think are worse players. My brother rode the bench for the basketball team all through high school even though he was clearly their best player because the coach had a personal vendetta against him.
He didn’t make a spectacle of himself and sell out his fellow teammates just to prove a point to the coach though. He simply went into the coaches office and quit the team.

Posted on February 14, 2013 at 11:55amThis kind of behavior doesn’t just suddenly appear; it’s been developing and expressed for years. Maybe the defiance (unfortunately) expressed was the reason he wasn’t played that much. Just maybe the coaching staff had had enough. And even if the student was right in his estimation, his rather juvenile actions just ruined his chances for a successful future. What coach in the world would want a player who just might score for the opposition when things just don’t go his way? His only option would be politics, and that’s terrible.
This is no different from the absolutely horrific tale of Chris Dorner, the former Los Angeles cop who went on a killing spree to “prove” a point. He, too, may have been right about his grievance. But his actions only prove that Dorner was unstable, grudge-bearing, and very dangerous.
I surely hope this young hockey player seeks assistance to help him out of the hole in which he put himself.

Posted on February 14, 2013 at 11:40amThe coach should have played the best goalie, regardless of what year he was in school. The coach was sacrificing his team’s chances at the playoffs, in order to be politically correct, it seems to me. Glad I’m not on that team. I’d have quit before the season started. I don’t play mind games, and don’t put up with people who try to do it to me.

Posted on February 14, 2013 at 11:38amSeems like a lot of people are getting way to bent out of shape on this.
The kid did nothing illegal, he didnt go ballistic or break out a gun like some seem to do.
He was upset for being replaced by an apparently less qualified person.
So before chastising the kid, put yourself in that situation.
Your boss comes to you and says – “John its been a pleasure working with you for the last 10 years.
But you 58 now, and your costing us money on our health plan. Its time to move over for a younger less qualified guy that isnt facing an expensive surgery. Good luck, your employment ends this Friday”
You telling me you aren’t running for a lawyer???

Posted on February 14, 2013 at 11:28amI’ve always had a healthy disrespect for authority, so I support the kid. And with the current administration as an example, I feel it is important to foster a healthy disrespect for authority in our young ones. Our founding fathers had it. The kid saw injustice, complained through the proper channels, nothing was rectified, he took unilateral action. I give him a high five. Good for you kid, stick it to the man.

Posted on February 14, 2013 at 11:20amTotally agree. Happened to me in high school on the football team. My senior I was benched so that the kids’ whose dads donated the most money to program could play. Most of the seniors on my team were benched for Sophomores. The coach was building for the future. We lost every game. Good job to this kid.
