A Missouri newspaper is standing by one of its political cartoons about the death of slain ex-Navy SEAL sniper Chris Kyle, shot and killed at a Texas gun range earlier this month allegedly at the hand of a fellow veteran.
Lee Judge’s Feb. 9 cartoon for the Kansas City Star showed a grave with the headstone “American Sniper” and featured the caption, “If only there had been a good guy with a gun around.” The statement is a reference to National Rifle Association leader Wayne LaPierre’s oft-repeated quote in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary massacre that “the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun” and Kyle’s book, “American Sniper.”

Lee Judge’s Feb. 9 cartoon (Image source: Kansas City Star)
The conservative website Twitchy flagged the cartoon Thursday after a claim that it ran in syndication in the Charlotte, Fla. Sun Herald on Wednesday — the day after Kyle’s funeral. It actually appears that the cartoon ran in the Biloxi, Miss. Sun Herald newspaper, though the precise print date could not immediately be verified.
The Mississippi Sun Herald did not return a request for comment from TheBlaze about whether or not the cartoon did actually run four days after its original publication date and if so, why the outlet chose to do so in such close proximity to the funeral.
Miriam Pepper, vice president of editorial at the Kansas City Star, however, defended the original cartoon, calling it “very powerful” and said it “made a very telling point.”
“Here you have a very experienced weapons expert, you know, who’s murdered by another shooter and I think we believe very strongly that the discussion around the issue of putting more armed guards in places is not going to be the answer everyone agrees with,” Pepper told TheBlaze.
Judge could not be reached directly for comment, but Pepper said she was sure he didn’t intend any disrespect.
“I’m sure he wasn’t trying to be disrespectful to the deceased. It was a very powerful cartoon and sometimes very powerful cartoons are uncomfortable,” she said.

My first education and career was Literature. What I learned from it was that Human Nature remains the same. So it IS True as it WAS True and MUST BE True:
“all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.”
The ills are no longer sufferable, The Duty is Clear. Only the number of Virtuous Men remains in doubt.

Feb. 14, 2013 at 4:43pmThe NRA president waited three days and only responded because for those three days he and the NRA became the 24-7 the whipping boy of the president and the media, all done while invoking the specter of those dead children to further their goals of ultimate confiscation. During the first week of the tragedy, the NRA was the ONLY sane, reasoned voice that called for action that would save children NOW, by arming good people to protect the children. Knee-jerks and feel goods abound in Washington, it’s good when a little common sense finds it’s way in as well. Thank you Wayne LaPierre.

Feb. 14, 2013 at 5:21pmWhat 2spiders said. The NRA was forced into making a statement because they came under such instant and brutal attack in the media, and even then they took a few days to respond so as not to look like they were capitalizing or trivialising the events. I remember stories about how the NRA has “finally broken their silence.” In short, you’re being a selective idiot if you think the NRA is somehow capitalizing on the massacre. They’re defending themselves from blame that has no place being put on them. That psychotic little **** in Connecticut wasn’t an NRA member, nor was he endorsed by the NRA in any way shape or form. They were only brought into the discussion because lefties can’t let a good crises go to waste and wanted to push their gun control agenda

The NRA president was correct & was not disrespectful. He was correct. Most of the time you need to meet force with force. Sometimes you can talk people out of committing criminal acts. There was that case around Atlanta,Georgia where a woman,Ashley Smith, talked an escapee,Brian Gene Nichols, from a courtroom not to harm her. He turned himself in. That is the exception.
I prefer talking. But if that doesn’t work, resorting to force is a must. Only a mor0n would assume they could flee in each & every case. Please not that the military often puts up a heavy volume of fire to cover their retreats (i.e. they are fleeing).
If I live near an anti-gun nut & they are subjected to a home invasion, I just might slow jam the 911 call. After all it is a conflicted event. there are so many things to consider. So pick your side & your lifestyle.

Feb. 14, 2013 at 10:58pmThe cartoon is horrible on the one hand ’cause it’s STUPID, but great on the other as it demonstrates the inability of “Spoiled Brats” (they call themselves “liberals”) to THINK.
During WWII, destroyers had guns on then–LOTS of guns.
But still, every once in awhile, a Kamikaze would get through.
Did ANYBODY argue for disarming naval vessels? Were there any cartoons of a Zero impaled ship sinking with this childish caption underneath, “If only there had been ships with guns around?”
NO!
This is the anti-logic of this cartoon:
1) it ASSUMES Kyle was armed, as opposed to waiting for his turn.
2) it actually tries to argue that if only the madman had a gun, that everybody would be alive, ya know, that old leftist straw-man, “Tah, well, executing him won’t bring back the victim,” as if ANYTHING could.
Pathetic.

No, it wasn’t.
Hmmmm – where do you get your information? You can’t trust them, because they lied to you, and now you have proof that they are undependable. You certainly didn’t get that from Beck’s show yourself, because that’s not at all what he said..
1. First of all, there is almost constant shooting at a gun range when it’s open – that’s what it’s there for.
2. Second, he said there are no “mass shootings” at gun ranges. (Beck, in fact, said that not more than one or two people would ever be shot at a gun range. )
So now you have proof that you’re getting information from a lying source.
By the way, if you buy a membership, you can download the podcast, as I do every day, and listen to every word for yourself. Unless you’re afraid you might actually find out first hand how you’ve been lying about Beck for a long time – or repeating lies about him.

You are ALL mistaken. I’m staunchly pro-gun rights. You let your biases get in the way. They are both disrespectful because there’s NO way to prove that “good guys with guns” would have stopped these tragedies. There were “good guys with guns” near Kyle, and obviously the tragedy wasn’t averted. But my point, which you all obviously missed is that exploiting tragic gun-related deaths to influence politics is disrespectful of the dead.
The problem is not guns. The problem is crazy people, and politicians and lobbyists using their actions to further their own goals.
Well, and in the case of those written above, being trigger-happy in their responses and shooting from the hip rather than using their brains.

The cartoon is a wiseguy remark rooted in specious illogic, easily debunked, and clearly insensitive to the victims of a tragedy. LaPierre, and we who are responsible gun owners, do not assert that EVERY bad guy with a gun will ALWAYS be stopped by a good guy with a gun. This tragedy was an example of the good guy losing. What’s your point, Locked? That if every good guy doesn’t win all the time, then every good guy should be unarmed so that he has a better chance of losing all the time? I’m not sure Kyle would’ve shot a guy he was trying to help. The assumption that it’s always wise to pull the trigger to defend yourself is just as flawed as taking away the ability to defend yourself.
We weren’t there, we don’t know exactly what happened, for all we know, they were both shot in the back, and both likely by surprise so the cartoon is deeply flawed in either more probable case.
Having a gun does not guarantee safety it just increases the odds of a level playing field.

It’s over people, so be prepared for when they make the announcement to turn in your guns. The Left has zero worries and very relaxed about gun control. Why do you think this is? OBY HAS INFORMED THEM THEY ALREADY WON!
Might as well just hand over your 13 year old daughters to the Mexican Cartel’s. If you don’t fight, maybe they won’t hurt your daughter too badly. Not being mean. It is well known that it’s common practice for 30 year old Mexican men to have sex with a 13 year old girls. Pissssed?? You better be. This IS coming as soon as Oby opens the border. He’s got health care in place and now just needs to wait for guns to be taken from the people. Look in Oby’s eyes when he talks. HE HATES America, and having monthly talks with Mexico. Feb. 14, 2013 at 4:04pmI think that Kyles death actually proves a something bigger NO ONE IS 100% SAFE . The idea that a law will make you 100% safe is as stupid as the idea that a gun will make you 100% safe. There are degree of safeness nothing more. Easier example they say seat belt laws saves lives but I have two friend who were two different accident where a seat belt would have killed them. Being thrown froma vehicle and thrown down in the floor saved their lives. But this discussion about guns was never about safety if not having a gun is safer then why do police carry them. Why are murder rates in gun free zones much much higher than those firearm freindly zones. If guns are a threat to society because of death then why are cars not being banned the cause 5 times as many deaths as gun and there the number of guns in america out number cars 3 to 1.
But more important than all that crap is Guns are a constitutional guaranteed right as a law abing U.S. not just any guns but guns that represent the average arms of the standing army at the federals government control. The 2cd amendment was for the time when the tree of liberty needs to be waters with the blood of the tyrant. Fact is the current ban on fully auto-weapons is Inconstitutional as it is an infringement. When we did nothing about that law the wheel of (fascist)progressives started creeping again. And not the beast wants its second bite of our second amendment.

Feb. 14, 2013 at 3:57pmAre you stupid or just trying to be obnoxious? Obviously there’s a huge difference between being shot while unaware and having a gun to shoot back at a murderer on an elementary school campus when you see the shooter coming and/or hear him shooting. Being shot in the back in a traitorious fashion is a different thing, and no doubt one that libs like you enjoy hearing about, especially when it takes down a hero. To compare the two while making a mockery of this man’s death is typical of the immoral left, who have no boundaries of decency because they have no God.

Feb. 14, 2013 at 4:19pmNo greater detractor of the misuse of our Military than I.. Moreover most intelligent Conservatives that share my disdain for the misappropriations of our armed forces readily realize that this gentleman was only carrying out the orders of the leaders of America. Now Dr. Paul said this was blowback. That was a politically incorrect statement although a true statement.
All of the dreadful and horrific repercussions of War should be considered before the bombs start flying and unfortunately we still have much blowback to endure before the decisions of the past 10 years have come to full fruition.
Regardless, this cartoon is foul. Extremely foul. I’d just as soon tear the **** ***** (fill it in, they won’t post it if I do) out on the spot.
There’s a time and a place for thoughtful debate.. I love reasoning out a matter and finding new ways to look at things which were previously unknown but my Constitutional rights aren’t up for debate.
I swear I’m tired of talking. We can debate on between ourselves on the right but there’s no debating this filth on the left. They are simply enemies/traitors to our Constitution and they need to be dealt with sooner rather than later.

Here, there is no way to defend against every situation (a blindside from a supposedly trusted person), ergo since being armed can’t perfectly solve all violence ever conceived of, all calls to arm are flawed, and we can discount that.

Feb. 14, 2013 at 3:27pmRegardless of what you do; regulate guns, put more guns into the hands of people, the truth of the matter is if someone wants to kill you, and you don’t realize it, then you are likely to die. All it takes for everything to go wrong is one moment, and your life is ended. It was a lesson drilled into me in ROTC, and it is a lesson people in America need to realize.
Why is it that inmates can murder each other in a place where no weapons are allowed and there are guards to stop them? Because you are naturally going to be reactionary, criminals dictate the terms of the engagement, and they will always be one step ahead of you. The best you can hope to achieve is damage mitigation.

Feb. 14, 2013 at 3:36pmWhere is this 100 million man force you claim exists?
There are roughly 80 million gun owners in America. That is 80 million individuals that feel completely alone and totally powerless. That is 80 million individuals that will either hide their guns or give them up, they will not fight.
I would love to see an 80 million man army, but that takes organization and leadership, two things that do not exist in the U.S.A. An 80 million man army can not be defeated, but 80 million individuals will surrender quietly.
All it would take is 1 governor, or 1 retired general, or 1 radio show talk host to begin to build the army, and yet none has stepped forward. Glenn talks a lot about love, but love did not win our freedom from the English, guns did. We will forever be slaves of our government until 1 man has the courage to lead the 80 million Americans that are begging with every fiber of their being for leadership.

Feb. 14, 2013 at 3:51pmJefferson, I think you need to re-read my post. I am one of the 80 million individuals, and the government can take my AR from my cold dead hands. My point is that there are 80 million people that feel the same way, but unless they are organized and lead, nothing will happen. If 20 police show up at your door and demand your guns, what will you do? You will either hide them or give them up, because you are alone. However, what if you were a member of an organized army? What if you could make a call for help to your army and have 1000 members of that army come running and ask those 20 police to kindly get lost? That is the only way we will keep our guns and freedom, and right now that does not exist.

Feb. 14, 2013 at 4:09pmSOrry, I misread your post critter.
If 20 people start showing up at every house, to confiscate guns, wouldn’t you kind of know that ahead of time? The combined armed forces of these united states is aproximately 1.7 million, with 1.4 million stationed stateside, the rest overseas. The police forces are about the same, give or take. You could import the entire Chinese military to help, and we’d still outnumber them by a large margin. Further, there’s a fair chance that a lot of our own military would side with us (though one cannot count on that as a reliable variable).
So…their manpower is so thin that any confiscation across the land would be easily seen and communicated to other gun owners. If you had forwarning, would you sit in your house and wait for them to show up? I wouldn’t. I’d be out of the house and meeting up with people in undisclosed locations to enact a counter-strike. Wouldn’t you? Wouldn’t most sane gun owners? I suspect most would. Even if only 10% did, that’s a 10 million man fighting force (or 8 million if we use your 1992 figure). That’s a hell of a big, heavily armed, mobilized force to try and confiscate arms from.
If they try an end game like confiscation, we win.

Feb. 14, 2013 at 4:54pmJefferson, I would hope that you are correct, but I don’t believe it. Even if there are 100 million gun owners, how many are hard-core libertarians? How many are casual hunters, sportsmen, etc. that just don’t care enough to do anything? Second, they obviously won’t show up with 20 people at every gun owners house at the same time . They know who has “assault weapons” and who does not. So they will go only to a person that owns an “assault weapon” with a massive SWAT force and put on a big show about it. They will then play that 24/7 on all the news channels. Imagine seeing 20 SWAT members invade a home and take it down with ease played all day, every day on all channels. With the implied threat that it is going to happen to you next. This will terrify most gun owners, especially those with families, and they will give up their guns. When the propaganda campaign is over, I doubt you would be left with more than 1 million people that still own guns and are willing to actively fight to keep them. That is 1 million people scattered over 50 states with no organization and no leadership, facing a million trained U.S. military personnel plus 1 million LEOs that are organized and lead. The military will “just follow orders” like all militarys do. Few Germans were Jew-hating Nazis, but they still rounded them up because they “were just following orders”. The courage to disobey orders is extremely rare. This is why we must organize now, before it is too late.

How do you know we wouldn’t have gone to war somewhere else? What if the North Koreans, emboldened by US helplessness decided to march on South Korea after we did nothing following September 11?
Could of, would of, should of, at the end of the day these sentiments are all meaningless. We fought those wars, we’ve lost men, so has the enemy. Would other people be alive or dead now if we chose a different course, doesn’t matter, the past is the past and cannot be redone.

Feb. 14, 2013 at 3:54pmYep, a friend of mine just sent me a link to that article. Here it is:
http://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2013/02/missouri-democrats-intruduce-legislation-to-confiscate-firearms-gives-gunowners-90-days-to-turn-in-guns/
Now, the bill is only specifying high capacity magazines and so-called “assault weapons”, but the reality is, this is just one more step towards total confiscation. The way I see it, my AR-15 is NOT an assault weapon, because it is semi-automatic only. But that is merely semantics. Bottom line, it will not stop at so-called assault weapons and high capacity magazines. They will go after handguns, shotguns and long-guns. It won’t stop. Libs are eroding our rights and will continue to do so until all of our rights have disappeared.
Look at the United Kingdom, they did a simular thing…then it was long rifles, then it was handguns…then it was shotguns (unless you are a farmer, and even then, it is highly restricted). That slippery slope resulted in at least one guy I know of who was a victom of a home evasion by an armed intruder. The Brit homeowner had a gun, and he shot the intruder inside his house. That homeowner is now serving a life sentance.
You don’t think our rights are being eroded? No one in this Administration will say that they condemn the use of drone strikes against Americans, abroad and at home without due process.
The day isn’t coming. It is here now!
