California High School Students Say They Were Suspended for Flag Bandanas and USA Chant at Basketball Game

Four California high school students claimed they were suspended for wearing patriotic bandanas and chanting “USA! USA!” during a school basketball game.

It happened last week at a game between rivals Camarillo High School and Rio Mesa High School in Ventura County, the Ventura County Star reported. The Rio Mesa students said a Camarillo associate principal warned spectators in the stands not to curse or make racial comments, then saw their bandanas and told them to either remove them or leave.

The four students went outside, then ran back in at halftime wearing the bandanas and leading a chant of “USA! USA!” according to the newspaper. That’s when they were escorted out and said they were handed five-day suspensions — punishments that were later lifted.

“We’ve done it always,” Austin Medeiros told the Star of wearing the bandanas. “It’s something we do. It’s the same group of friends. We always talk about it. We’re all very patriotic.”

Camarillo High principal Glenn Lipman disputed the students’ claim that they were suspended, but said they were asked to leave the campus. He told the Star that asking them to remove their bandanas was a precaution because of the diverse student bodies of both high schools. The schools each have large Hispanic populations.

Oxnard Union School District Superintendent Gabe Soumakian backed the principal, telling Fox News there were “racial overtones” to the “USA!” chant.

“There was symbolism there with the bandana and the chant,” Soumakian said, claiming it had “nothing to do with being patriotic or unpatriotic.”

“It has to do with the fact that they are making a chant regarding that we are from the USA and you’re not. Whether that’s the implied intent, that’s the way it comes across,” he said.

Soumakian also told Fox that chanting “USA!” does not comply with state athletic guidelines.

“They have to respect everyone,” he said. “When you go to a game – you cheer for your team and you don’t make any derogatory comments or make inappropriate comments toward the other team.”

Though the students’ punishments were lifted, Soumakian said the incident isn’t over.

“As a superintendent I think we need to pursue this further,” he said. “We need to work with teachers and students and the community about the concept of cultural proficiency.”

It’s not the first time a “USA! USA!” chant has been deemed inappropriate by school officials. Last year, Texas school officials filed a complaint after supporters of a rival team broke into the chant after clinching a regional championship.

  This is a very patriotic statement. Oxnard has been out of control for decades regarding illegals. There are two naval bases nearby, Pt. Mugu and Port Hueneme, and many of the families live in Camarillo.

  It is California – that right there says it all. Wearing Red, White, And Blue is now racial, Chanting USA is now racial, how long before they ban the singing of the National Anthem at all sporting events?
  
  Each State that Borders California should close all entry points into California, stop all land vehicle traffic. Any goods produced and exported from California should be subject to a Tariff. All military bases should be closed and relocated to other States.
  
  The only way to bring this blight back into the fold is by hurting them in the pocket books.

  The enemy of America have been doing this for many years. I recall a billboard in LA that was displayed for too long declaring F— You this is Mexico! I remember stories of high schools that had taken anti American stand banning display of the flag and of patriotic clothing back when George Bush the daddy was President.But it always breaks my heart when I read a new story of how certain people are ashamed to be Americans. I am sorry no one should have to apologize for chanting USA, USA at any event. We are in the USA and we nip this PC crap in the bud now. It is time to sue the schools for 1st Amendment rights. If you are illegal and in the USA, I would think you’d cheer too. I mean you are getting a free ride, you are breaking our laws and if you are offended by others chanting USA, then get the F out of my country you ingrate.   USA—the melting pot? Remember, when we were taught this principal as a point of pride. Austin Medeiros and Stefan Valenzuela were 2 of the guys involved in the chant. Sounds to me to be hispanic surnames and a picture of the four boys indicate 2 of the boys definitely hispanic looking (not Austin).
  
  Fire the upside down principal and remove the guy from the school board.

  Cofe, you are correct, NO ONE should have to apologize for chanting USA, especially IN AMERICA. But this is what the schools systems around the country are doing, they vilify those with PRIDE IN AMERICA and the AMERICAN WAY OF LIFE all while pushing the lefts agenda. I remember when Latinos were protesting immigration policy back in 2005/2006 in California, there were 100s of Mexican flags and not a single American flag. After they were criticized for it, they started showing the American flag in later protests. I think they are here for the jobs, not to be Americans.

I will say that in all of my years of going to high school games and participating in high school games, USA was not a chant that I heard often. I think many of us are looking for an excuse to be upset with the other side. Granted the left has really killed our school system, but seriously why would you want to start a chant of USA unless you are honoring a vet at the game or just after the national anthem. Neither of that seems to be the reasoning here, so for now, I do question the kids intent until provided proof otherwise.

  I also bet when you were in high school you never had Muslim fly planes into the WTC and killed 3,000 people. Since that time, USA is our chant. I never heard it either, but you bet now you will. I am tempted to go to HS games and start the chant and I don’t have kids in school. This PC crap is get way out of hand. If you don’t want to participate, don’t, but don’t tell me when and when I can not chant USA. It is my 1st amendment rights to do so, regardless of the schools wishes.

  I’ll correct the quote from the article: “The schools each have large Hispanic populations.” Correctly it should say: “The schools each have large populations of Mexican nationals who are here illegally.” They are here attempting to recolonize land that they believe was stolen from them hundreds of years ago. Indeed, while this continent was being colonized by Europeans, Americans took land from from the Spaniards and developed it. Good that they did, or it would be as dilapidated as Mexico is today. Now the Mexicans see what we have built and they want to steal it. Not just the land, but all the work we’ve put into it.

Racial overtones? Does that mean USA = White or are we actually a melting pot of different races and cultures? Many school districts seem out of control in California and elsewhere. There are many good teachers here, but they are silent like many other groups. I live outside of Los Angeles and it seems like once a week there is a news story about another Southern California teacher being arrested for molesting a child.

I cannot wait to move from CA to the Colorado River in AZ when my wife retires.

  What does concern me & is my business is the actions of the associate principal. He is wrong. He needs to apologize and/or be fired.
  
  We could fire the associate principal & keep the secretary & the school runs well. We fire a secretary & keep the associate principal & business comes to a screeching halt.

  Because Hispanics aren’t really American…at least according to the superintendent. Hispanics are less than real Americans, less than real humans, so for them to see White students who are real humans and real Americans rubbing in their faces is just too much for that animal-like race of brown people to handle, apparently.

Americans and the USA = all and any race….now, let me move to Mexico or to India, I will NEVER be considered Mexican or Indian….and I certainly would be ignored if I cried RACISM by their patriotic chants….this is nothing more than intimidation from government employees, in a government building, onto other American children. These gov’t employees are convinced that they are now the thought police. They deem themselves as all powerful, and able to dole out punishment onto children for made-up offenses that live inside the heads of folks who LOOK for racism….

  One of the necessary avenues towards proper despotic rule is to make sure that certain segments of society are pitted against each other. A single people with common goals of liberty and prosperity do not rule easily. The United States has been systematically balkanized to make sure that blacks are against hispanics and hispanics are against asians and all of them hate the majority of whites. Differing educations and income levels also must be set at odds with propaganda and campaigns. You only really need demonize one segment at a time, because the natural reaction to attack is to defend yourself. So if the rich are demonized by the poor, the rich will automatically hate the poor. Artificial class systems are developed based on sociological make ups, and ethic heritages. They are repeated over and over and over like a incessant drumbeat by perverted sycophants in the media. The middle class? Define it. Is there a concrete definition? Of course not, that allows them to redefine the title to fit their purposes. All of it, ever last bit of it, all revolves around centralizing and strengthening power of the central authority in Washington.

  When I was in school, we actually learned about and celebrated the “melting pot” that was America. We were a nation of immigrants that somehow believed the promise of opportunity offered by America. We freely gave up our old nationality to assume the title “American”. Sure there was animosity and bias just like there is now. Somehow we got through that. Now no one calls me “shanty irish” or “mick” or “paddy” and my wife is not called a “***”.   I’m not sure I understand. They’re nearly full bore socialists out there, and none of the gun owning conservative/libertarian types has done jack squat to stop it. They already know they’re far outnumbered at the voting booth and have been for a very long time, and they do nothing? I’m not sure I share your optimism about what’s left of Americans in California.
  
  The real metal will start flying when the Fed starts pushing this kind of crap on flyover country. The government(s) have become so arrogant and are moving so quickly that they’ve forgotten that there are bales of “unconverted” types out here. Nobody would try to pull a stunt like this article in Montana or Idaho, and expect that their home wouldn’t be on fire in two short minutes after it was reported, for example.

  WTF is “cultural proficiency”? Does one achieve proficiency when fully indoctrinated? Are some of us necessarily “culturally deficient” due to lack of lock-step adherence to commie agenda? California has really let herself go :(

  The state of what…Mexico? No. California, which exists (for the moment, God help us) in what nation? The USA? Oh, ok. So chanting USA, in a school in the USA, playing a team comprised entirely of US citizens, and your team are all US citizens, is disrespecting…who precisely?
