You’ll Never Believe the Amount of Cash Federal Prosecutors Say This Ex-Dem Mayor Gambled Away

Former San Diego Mayor Maureen OConnor Caught in Massive Fraud, Gambling Scheme

Maureen O’Connor (wikipedia)

Former San Diego Mayor Maureen O’Connor — a Democrat — acknowledged Thursday in federal court that she misappropriated $2 million from her late husband’s charitable foundation due to a “gambling addiction” in which she won more than $1 billion but lost even more over nearly a decade.

“How much?” you ask. Try more than $1 billion dollars.

Yes, she gambled away more than $1,000,000,000. That’s nine zeros.

O’Connor made the acknowledgement in an agreement with the government to defer prosecution for two years while she attempts to repay the debt.

She was mayor of California’s second-largest city from 1986 to 1992. The two-term mayor was elected San Diego’s first female leader after eight years on the City Council. She was married to Robert O. Peterson, founder of the Jack-In-The-Box restaurant chain.

Prosecutors said her gambling winnings amounted to more than $1 billion from 2000 to 2009 but she lost more than that.

Her defense attorney estimated the debt at $13 million.

O’Connor gambled in Las Vegas, Atlantic City, N.J., and San Diego. We assume those casino owners are glad she did. More than $1 billion dollars.

This women “misappropriated” funds from a charity. in other words she stole money and a lot of it. So, if I rob a bank and get caught , do I get 2 years to pay it back and avoid prison? Since when do we get time to pay it back and avoid prosecution? Seeing that she is a big gambler all she really needs is 6.5 million and put it all on RED.

We’ve obviously seen corrupt Republicans, but I clearly see a great foundational morality deficit on the Democrat side of the political class & many dedicated voters while the rest of their voting block do not see it.

“….Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, Religion and morality are indispensable supports. In vain would that man claim the tribute of Patriotism, who should labor to subvert these great Pillars of human happiness, these firmest props of the duties of Men and citizens. The mere Politician, equally with the pious man ought to respect and to cherish them. A volume could not trace all their connections with private and public felicity. Let it simply be asked where is the security for property, for reputation, for life, if the sense of religious obligation desert the oaths, which are the instruments of investigation in Courts of Justice? And let us with caution indulge the supposition, that morality can be maintained without religion. Whatever may be conceded to the influence of refined education on minds of peculiar structure, reason and experience both forbid us to expect that National morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle.
’Tis substantially true, that virtue or morality is a necessary spring of popular government. The rule indeed extends with more or less force to every species of free Government.” – from G Washington’s farewell address

      Morning MONK, LOL!
We had a guy in our unit in Germany in the mid ’80s who was an addict. Each payday the HQs NCO had to take turns on a schedule watching him and to keep him out of the EM/NCO Club. Gambling was legal there and each of these clubs had those German Spiel gambling machines. He would would blow a bi-monthly paycheck in a couple of hours. We were all on separate rations and he had to be put back on a meal card or he would have starved to death. He was so addicted that he would slip out at night from the barracks to a nearby gasthaus eventually and blow anything that he had left. The big thing was to make sure he sent some money home, and then escort him to the PX or Commissary to make certain that he had the necessary toiletries for he month, and that his clothing was in good shape. His addiction affected a lot of people. Finally, after about 6 to 8 months after my arrival our BN then BGD chain of command was convinced to discharge and send him back to the states.

There would have been a political angle if she had avoided taxes after advocating higher taxes.

Of if she had used tax dollars to gamble with.

Unless Democrats are more likely to be gamblers than Republicans then I don’t see a political angle.

Unless as Winnebago suggested that some or all of the money went elsewhere & not gambling. Then there would be a political angle.
