The wall-to-wall media coverage of the disabled cruise ship that was towed into port Thursday night has generated criticism from those who say the passengers were never in any real trouble and too much time was spent over dramatizing the story. Of course, the situation was difficult, but passengers had food, drink and the peace of mind knowing they would be rescued.
During CNN’s coverage of passengers disembarking from the ship, reporter Martin Savidge was shut down by one of the passengers when he attempted to equate the incident to Hurricane Katrina.
“The isolation factor you described, this is the same sort of thing that many people who went through Katrina in New Orleans – those that were left behind – they never heard anything either,” Savidge said, referring to the lack of communication with the mainland. “I imagine that’s something very similar.”
“Yeah, but let’s keep it in perspective. Katrina was a major devastation. We’re in a freaking cruise ship,” the composed passenger shot back. “Two different things.”
Watch the segment via CNN/Mediaite:
During his radio show on Friday, Glenn Beck and co-host Pat Gray discussed the overkill coverage of the disabled cruise ship. He also noted how it only took about 72 hours for some passengers to start behaving like “animals.”
“It took three days for someone to describe the passengers of the cruise line as ‘animals’,” Beck said. “How long does it take for society to fall apart? One, two three [days].”
Beck acknowledged that it was a “bad situation” and “these people have a right to be pissed off.” He also encouraged listeners to be prepared for situations in which society could potentially break down.

Feb. 16, 2013 at 8:00amIt seems less and less difficult to embarrass CNN these days. A third world network for a what’s swiftly becoming a third world nation.

Feb. 16, 2013 at 5:02amIt is countless acts of the media to distort events and make them appear larger than life that makes people apathetical to what they say, which creates a never ending cycle of things like this, because the media thinks no one is listening, but they don’t stop to consider why?

Feb. 16, 2013 at 1:57amI’ve been through three Typhoons and a bit of war. This was a bit of media flop and wasn’t really handled well by the cruise line .Did they give the passengers all they wanted to eat? equals to many bathroom breaks equals possible health risk. The crew had every right to limit everything on board maritime law until power was restored. 4000 people on board-rotation of food and deck sleep so on. Did Obama get votes out of this?

Feb. 16, 2013 at 1:44amGet ready folks, here we go. The great cruise ship distraction is coming to take the emphasis off the real problems that are hurting our country. Obama will executive order a commission to investigate cruise ship safety. The commission will be made up of Obama cronies payed big salaries to make recommendations that can’t be enforced since most cruise ships are registered in foreign countries. Congress will hold hearings, conduct studies and waste more tax payer money and congressional time trying to figure out if they can pass some legislation that won’t fix anything.

Feb. 15, 2013 at 8:05pmBlame Carnival for their paying ‘guests’ plight, there is enough space in the lifeboats for everyone on board to evacuate and motor over to board another vessel or two, the same way the lifeboats are used as ferries when the ships pull in to ports not large enough to dock, you leave via the door near the waterline……..I guess their 4 / 5 days aboard was a cheaper alternative….

Feb. 15, 2013 at 7:41pmIt’s official. The environmentalist’s brainwashing is complete. It is now known that people will endure DAYS of living in their own excrement before they would dream of “polluting” the ocean with it. Why they didn’t just pour the waste overboard is beyond imagination. Do whales crap in the sea?

Feb. 15, 2013 at 7:27pmJust goes to show how pathetic and savage people really are. 5 days without electricity and “running” water and society fell apart aboard the boat. You’d have thought these folks have been months at sea without anything. We’re talking 5 days and they all turned into savages. The people let conditions turn into what they were. I can’t wait to see what folks do when goods and services stop after the collapse of our economy. Government is arming up – these idiots will be dead in the first 30 days. They couldn’t take care of themselves hardly for 5 days, imagine 2-3 months or more without electricity.

Feb. 15, 2013 at 7:18pmWhat an absolute non-story this is being blown into by CNN. All of the 1000′s of cruises that leave our ports every year without any major problem and this one they squeeze for every second of ratings that can get. Why does anyone watch this network any more? I remember when I quit. It was during the 1st Gulf War, when Wolf Blitzer was giving reports and giving out our troop positions as well.

Feb. 15, 2013 at 7:47pmYeah, I think that was Bernard Shaw on CNN screwing up during the Gulf War, but I’m not sure. I remember the “scud stud”, Arthur Kent from ABC. We watched it non-stop in high school history class.

Feb. 15, 2013 at 7:09pmHa!! CNN, was the same network that sent reporters into the Arab Spring trying desperately to get Egyptians to credit Obama for their revolution. The hacks kept coming up empty. Couldn’t find one protester to say anything positive about the tyrant King of America. So nice, that the passenger interjected common sense. This story was so overblown. Who wants to go on cruiseships anymore with the risks of salmonella, food poisoning, clogged toilets, etc?? Gross.

Feb. 15, 2013 at 7:01pmIs Continually Numb Nuts still in business? Not according to their ratings. The only reason most people know about CNN is that they’re forced to watch it at every airport in America, for some perverted reason. Fox is the #1 cable news network, although a shadow of its former self, but still quadruples the rajings for CNN shows. CNN is the USA Today of cable. Give it away for free. Does anyone buy USA Today?
