It’s clear that the gun control debate is here to stay for the time being. That being the case, it’s important that we really examine all the facts surrounding gun violence.
So just how likely are you to be killed by a gun in the United States? The Economist has put together an interesting graphic that demonstrates your chances of getting killed by an array of things, including guns, heart disease, fire and more.
According to the Economist’s chart, your chances of dying as a result of “assault by firearm” is about 1 in 25,000. Americans also have a 1 in 514,147 chance of being killed by “firearms discharge. While still considered one of the leading causes of death in the U.S., the data certainly is at odds with the mainstream media narrative that all guns are simply mass killing machines.
The data from America’s National Safety Council suggests you are more likely to die from “intentional self harm,” an accidental injury or heart disease.
You are more likely to be killed by a gun than “walking,” choking or falling down the stairs. You are least likely to be killed by an asteroid impact (74,817,414 to 1), fireworks (50,729,141 to 1) or a bee sting (25,364,571 to 1).
Check out the graphic below (Click chart to see more):
Now, we also know that twice as many people are killed by “hands and feet” than semi-automatic rifles, which President Barack Obama and Democrats are looking to ban. There are also nearly five times more murders by knife than murders by so-called “assault weapons.”
This graph puts it in perspective, and calls into question how effective an “assault weapons” ban would actually be.

Too many studies have been done showing that medical mistakes from errors, wrong medication, incompetency, cause over 90,000 deaths each year and this is far more than any gun has done……….something’s wrong in the medical community. Clean up this mess if you want to save lives, or is there another reason you want to ban guns??

Words mean things and the gun grabbers know this. They use these terms to frame the debate. And any so-called gun rights defenders who also use such terms play right into the grabber’s hands.
There is no such thing as gun violence – there is only human violence. And no one has ever been assaulted by an inanimate object (key word here is inanimate). These two points must be made immediately and every single time those two false phrases are used.

I would also note car bombs and poisons are more common in those countries with no gun rights. After all gun confiscation frame work is in the democrat platform page 21.

Yes, we do have a higher rate of murder/suicide etc BY GUN. Countries that have banned them have lower rates BY GUN.
Not to harp on Australia here, but the verdict is IN on this. Yes, banning guns dropped murder/suicide/assault/robbery by GUN, it did NOT drop the OVERALL number of people committing murder or suicide. They simply used other methods to kill themselves or others. Assault and sexual assault skyrocketed.
I’m not seeing how a society is so much better if a crackhead knifes you rather than opting to shoot you. You’ve still got a knife sticking out of your chest, which has a nasty tendency to have side effects like death.
I’m also not seeing how a society can claim itself to be superior when sexual assault on females skyrockets. A rape victim is NOT morally superior to a woman who shot an attempted rapist.
Gun controllers claim that a society is “better” when people hang themselves rather than shoot themselves, stab a victim rather than shooting them and rape/sexual assault/violent assault skyrocket simply because there’s no guns.
I call shenanigans on that.
This argument that liberals make is disgusting. Better to be a victim of someone who didn’t follow the law anyway than to have used a gun to stop criminal activity that might have cost you YOUR life.
If you don’t like guns, don’t buy one. Leave everyone else the heck alone.

Please list the other industrialized Democracies for which you refer – and please also include the easy to obtain history of genocide which took place in these countries.. And also include the rates of crime – especially violent crime – in these wonderful socialist European countries from which we should emulate. SHOW YOUR WORK…
And FYI America was not supposed to be a democracy. It was meant to be a republic. Do you understand the difference between a democracy and a republic? If so, show your work…
And you used the term “gun murder”. I defy you to provide evidence of one single murder ever committed by a gun. You can not because the absolute fact of the matter is that at no time in human history has an inanimate object ever deliberately killed a human being. The key word here is inanimate. An object has no will and therefore by its very definition, an inanimate object is incapable of producing nether good nor bad. In the end of it all it all comes down to the will and the means to enforce the meaning

Let me tell you how this will play out. They are going after assault weapons first for three reasons. They are owned by far fewer people, they are scaring looking and they stand the best chance of getting that through congress. As soon as that is done, this is what you will hear from some left wing lawmaker: “We just passed sweeping legislation to ban assault weapons, we are all safer now. Now, did you know handguns kill 7 times more people than assault weapons? How can we not do something about those terrible handguns. After all if we can save just one life, isn’t it worth it?”

Feb. 15, 2013 at 9:18pmThe surge in gun sales means that people want the guns before big government attempts to take away their 2nd ammendment rights.
“If tanks start rolling?” Tanks can’t be manned all the time, and are mostly ineffective in urban situations, look at Iraq.
The current surge is because incompetent a-holes are attempting to take peoples god given rights from them, and people want to be a step ahead of big brother.
Your next point says “a childish resistance to authority” what a stupid thing to say. The authority comes from the people, not from a few liberal wackos who want to deprive Americans of their right to defend themselves.
“That money could be better spent elsewhere?” Protecting yourself, your family, your neighbors, and your freedom is the highest responsibility that there is. The money I spent today purchasing an AR10 from a private buyer may just be the best money I ever spent.

They are pealing away gun rights by dividing the universe of guns into arbitrary classes. We should be able to have automatic weapons because the government has automatic weapons. I don’t want one because it would be too expensive to become proficient with it. I am also too lazy to lug it and its ammo around, but I think people should be able to have them if only for collection purposes. As long as gun rights is treated as a public policy issue rather than a gun rights issue, the Left will always come up with some kind of social engineering “improvement” that moves the goal post down the road of submission. Second – the Gun lobby is not pushing gun sales, the government and the PRESS is. How by making you more unsafe and giving criminals more freedom to prey on the unarmed. In other words the government is saying you are on your own. The press keeps ramping up fear and providing the “right Propaganda” to support the criminals currently in the white house and congress.

If the government dares to take up arms against the people, we will instantly be in a state of de facto civil war.
Never mind the tanks, those AR15s will be invaluable tools to kill every single enemy combatant we see….and the enemy will be the entity formerly known as the government & its armed agents.

Feb. 15, 2013 at 7:59pmI would bet money that deaths are far more often a result of government policies, regulations, frauds or ommissions than by all weapons including firearms, when judged by Proximate Cause.
The definition of Proximate Cause is as follows:
A Proximate Cause is one that is legally sufficient to result in liability. It is an act or omission that is considered in law to result in a consequence, so that liability can be imposed on the actor. It is the cause that directly produces an event. The event would not have occurred but for the cause. This is also referred to as direct cause, efficient cause, initial cause, first cause, legal cause, producing cause, primary cause or jural cause.
In the case of Sandy Hook Elementary School, the authorities do not even investigate the Proximate Cause of these killings. They only see assault rifles, guns explosives etc.. They do not look at the actor in the killing role or his mother or the failure of government in identifying seriously disturbed persons and taking steps to protect others from this person. Their negligence includes emptying mental institution patients back into society and having no systems of monitoring them. How many deaths had to occur before we made addresses of sex offenders public information and yet probably more needs to be done to reduce further deaths. The same people who are insisting on more gun controls are the Proximate Cause of large numbers of deaths by not focusing on and correcting underlying caus

Feb. 15, 2013 at 7:29pmDo you really think that these charts and facts mean anything to a psychotic imbecile aka, voting liberal democrat? And further. Are really so stupid to believe that the push to remove guns from the American public has anything to do with saving lives? These charts mean nothing, accomplish nothing and change nothing. The only means by which to stop this madness was given to you by our forefathers, writers of our constitution. Now most of us have become a bunch of **$$**$ that are too afraid to use that last tool left to prevent the loss of our freedom. If you do not know what that tool is and what you need to do with it then we are truly lost. I see you over there scratching your head. You don’t have a clue do you? You remind me of that ancestor commercial except in reverse. I can see your grandkids on the TV now, saying ” I found records of my grandfather. He was a successful businessman but died a slave.”

Feb. 15, 2013 at 6:54pmGiven the fact the bottom chart indicates you handguns are used almost 200 times more than rifles, why dont you use a picture of a handgun instead of an AR15 in your illustration?

Feb. 15, 2013 at 6:52pmWe should ban drugs, a lot of people die from drugs and even prescribed medicines.
We should ban gasoline because a lot of people are burned from gasoline being poured on them and lit by a murderer. Let’s ban dogs because they also sometimes kill people.

Feb. 15, 2013 at 6:49pmI had a buddy who was a homicide detective for about 5 years. He told me that of his 50 or so cases he worked, only 2 of the victims were actually “innocent”. There should be a chart that shows you your chance of dying to guns if you aren’t a drug dealer. It would be far less than this chart shows.

Feb. 15, 2013 at 7:31pmAccording to those posting here at the Blaze, your homocide detective must be wrong. Every minute gangs of marauding thugs are bursting through the door somewhere to murder the innocent parents and children not smart enough to have a loaded semi-automatic rifle leaning on every headboard. According to Wayne LaPierre, who swears he is not paranoid, says it is irresponsible for a homeowner to not have a gun in the home to protect their family.

Feb. 16, 2013 at 9:05amI agree with MK. Las week inour neighborhood the errant violent cop was sighted and we all turned in our weapons so we would be safe. Now that he has been burned up we want our arms back and they wont give them up. We are afraid to press the point (eben the moot point).
Should we turn in our scissors now?
