New Interactive Map Shows the Number of Times Guns Have Saved Americans

Proponents of stricter gun control measures regularly call attention to the number of people who have killed in gun-related crimes:

Heres the Cato Institute’s Interactive Gun Map

A Huffington Post front page splash featuring victims of gun crime. Note that the word “freedom” is in scare quotes.

However, what these people often neglect to mention is the number of people who have been saved by firearms. That is, gun control advocates rarely — if ever — acknowledge the possible benefits of owning a gun.

But is there an upside to owning a gun, as defenders of the Second Amendment claim? Of course there is. Indeed, it shouldn’t come as a surprise when we say numerous would-be murderers, burglars, and rapists have been thwarted by guns.

But let’s try to visualize this.

In the spirit of the Journal News, the New York newspaper that published a map featuring  the names and addresses of legal gun owners in three counties, the Cato Institute has put together a map documenting the instances where a gun has helped innocent Americans protect themselves from criminals.

“Gun control proponents cannot deny that people use guns successfully against criminals, but they tend to play down how often such events take place,” Cato notes. “The purpose of this map is to draw more attention to this aspect of the firearms policy debate.”

Heres the Cato Institute’s Interactive Gun Map

Screen grab.

Now two points need to be made about this map:

First, the map is not comprehensive. Criminals will often flee the scene when they discover that their intended target has a gun. With no shots fired, no injuries, and no suspect in custody, news organizations may report nothing at all. Thus, it is important to remember that news reports can only provide us with an imperfect picture of defensive gun use in America.

Second, when a citizen is able to shoot an attacker or hold a rapist or robber until the police arrive, it is very likely that more than one crime has been prevented because if the culprit had not been stopped, he could have targeted other citizens as well. The bottom line is that gun owners stop a lot of criminal mayhem every year.

Final Thought: As the above map clearly illustrates, firearms have been used to save lives. Washington should keep this in mind when it considers passing legislation that would make it more difficult for Americans to have access to guns.

After all, if it can save just one life

Please educate yourself on the difference between clips and magazines. Magazines are used to feed a weapon, clips are used to load magazines. Clips are either 5 or 10 rounds, so YES I hope they ban clips. I can load my 30 round mags and my 13 round pistol mags by hand.

Hey stupid. whether a mag hold 7 to 10 or 13 to 15 like my ruger Sr40c is not the question.. people who own guns legally feel more comfortable with the mags hold the larger amount of ammo….whoud a cop be okay with just 7 rounds?????? would you feel mre comfortable starting out a long drive with half a tank of gas or a full tank.

Well asking that question brings me back to something that happened in GA when a woman was defending her home and child. She unloaded 6 rounds and hit the guy each time, he walked away. So yes I feel more comfortable with a large capacity magazine. Maybe if she would have had 8 rounds or 10, or even 16 they guy would never have left the house, taxpayer money would not have to be wasted on medical bills or a trial. Seven rounds is not enough sometimes, especially if someone is hopped up on crack, meth, or some other crazy drug.

It’s not a clip it’s a magazine. If you are going to try and make an argument one way or another on gun control you should know what the Hell your talking about or just be another dumb ass lefty. The number of bullets in a magazine is not the issue despite what the left and the media would have you believe. John Browning’s invention of the Colt 1911 over 100 years old has a normal capacity magazine of 7 rounds with an additional round in the chamber making 8. There is no such thing as having too many bullets in a self defense situation but there is such a thing as not having enough to save your life.

My rifle has a clip that hold 8 30-06 and its a government issue semi-automatic. A spring clip. 1942 Garand. It is a proven battlefield rifle. Of course I may have lost it in a freakish canoeing accident a while back, my memory is faded on the subject.

It is far better to have rounds left than to need more and not have them. I’ve been in many incidents where merely drawing my weapon caused the perp to flee. I’ve also been in two gun fights where I’ve loaded a second and third 15 round magazine. I wasn’t going Hollywood with the ammo either. That gang had five fewer members on the street by the time the police showed up. The whole thing took seven minuets, an eternity in hell. I am pleased to say urban renewal has turned that neighborhood into an unused park.

Little do these “professional gun owners” realize, revolvers uses CLIPS (half-moon and full moon). Goes to show how much they want to be right about something. Since there are no really reliable statistics on the use of firearms that stop or prevent a crime the anti-gun people poo-poo it when it’s mentioned. But MOST times a gun is shown the bad guy(s) see a gun and run without a shot being fired. No normal person wants to shoot someone, so when the miscreant turns tail and runs no shots, no report.

I have thrice in my life used a firearm to defend myself. Twice there was not a shot fired and no police report filed as the ner-do-wells both fled immediately. I’m just one person, now imagine how many times this happens every single day in this country!! One other time while hiking my group was being shot at by some lunatic who was hidden and was taking pot shots at us. Who knows if he was a bad shot and was trying to hit us but missed five times or if he was intentionally missing. One thing for certain though is he didn’t count on my having a Ruger Mini 14 with me with a loaded 30 round magazine with which I promptly returned fire and that was the end of that situation! He must have scattered as he stopped shooting. That time we called the police, filed a report and of course he was never found. I believe that my having one of those god aweful assault rifles with me that day may have saved a life or two and you know, “if we can just save one life…..”.

I will NEVER, EVER, EVER register my guns or give them up, NEVER!

Furthermore, if the presence of a firearm does nothing to deter crime, why do the police carry them? After all according to the California police chief, they are not for defense, only offense.

These liberals are getting so balled up in their inconsistencies that it’s hilarious to watch. Logic and common sense will always prevail. The problem for them now is there is just too much evidence out there to combat their lies.

You are exactly right. We will never know how many times a gun saved a person, persons, a family because the incident was never reported. And when it gets reported to law enforcement, there is no relevant database to record the incident in many cases. The gun haters will incessantly repeat statistics of people harmed by guns (even when the person doing the harming is a gang banger shooting another gang banger) but they will totally ignore the known statistics of incidents where a gun save others from death, beatings, rape, robbery, etc.

“Hey, our largest organization of personnel with weapons is called the Department of DEFENSE.”

My friends, RJJ just made a PROFOUND statement! ‘Twas not so long ago that the Dept. of Defense was known as the “Dept of War”. The name change came about as a result of pacifists, which are now known as “progressives”. Those are the same folks wanting to do away with our Constitution. That very fact puts our PC law-ENFORCEMENT Chief in a quandary…

Aside from that, the stupid Chief is telling us that his officers are armed for offensive purposes (standing Army), which runs CONTRARY to the 2ND Amendment, to wit – “A well-regulated (trained) militia (the People) being necessary to the security (DEFENSE) of a free State, the Right of the People (citizens) to keep (possess) and bear (present; carry) arms (weapons, intentionally unspecified) shall not be infringed (you don’t mess with it – PERIOD).

Has he, in essence, declared WAR on U.S. Citizens? If not, it must be demanded of him that he clarify his position, or else he should be removed from office, by force if necessary. Without clarification, it’s not beyond reason to believe he’s threatening citizens with tyranny.

witness as well, trolls the truth that in those states with long standing respect for firearms and personal carriage there are NOT the number of incidents.

while i cannot prove this without more time and data than i want to waste, i do not believe it is merely a matter of a lower population density, either. Go to Montana or Wyoming, the Dakotas or Texas, and the bad guys simply do not choose to push their luck as often as is true where there are more people who abhor firearms.

and again, no one is saying everyone has to carry or even know how to shoot… it seems to me the latter would be a reasonable skill, just like i have learned skills that i no longer practice. Learning keeps the mind sharp, if nothing else. But aside from they philosophical ‘if everyone carried’ points, no one here is demanding MBE, Sensei, JRook or any of the other haters buy or use a firearm.

Go on about your business and let us be about ours. But stop perpetuating the lies and distorting the facts… the truth is not on your side.

and of course your point is you have no point as no one is disputing that guns can be a very effective weapon when purchased, registered and used safely and legally. The only real questions is why we have not done more to insure those three attributes are associated with every gun. why not do something useful and answer the question as to why the gun industry “loses track” of 100,000 guns every year. and make your best case that this is about anything more than money for gun manufacturers, some who might even advertise on the blaze.

What does registering have to do with anything? The majority of states shown don’t “register” firearms or keep any records whatsoever of firearms purchases (about specific firearms matched to buyer).

Guess your strawman fell down and went boom, huh? :)

My only point was that we didn’t have the hard data before. Now, we, kind of, do, to back up what we have always been saying, which is, guns are a deterrent to crime, and that deterred crime doesn’t get reported by police. What needs to be added is the kind of crime, such as: if someone planned to rob you, but then saw your gun on the dash of your car, that was a deterred crime.

Registration has nothing to do with safety. It is just the preliminary step to confiscation. After all, the Gestapo need to know which houses to confiscate guns from, don’t they?
      Heil Hitler!

jrook, you said “why not do something useful and answer the question as to why the gun industry “loses track” of 100,000 guns every year.” The “gun industry” does not loose track of 100,000 guns every year. Manufactures sell/send guns to retailers and keep records on each shipment. Retailers sell to law abiding citizens. The gun industry has no responsibility to “track” guns past the wholesale shipment to the retailer. Just like Canada, registration will lead to confiscation. Once a government employee decides your registered firearm is no longer on the “approved list” it will be confiscated. Or you face criminal charges. BTW, Canada just repealed their registration law.

That’s what I came back to post, thank you for that. He’s trying to sneak in what’s called a “package deal”. Adds two components that are true and slips in a third, then pretends they’re all real and calls for everybody to follow them.

These folks are absolute snakes, they have no credibility and no ability to hold an honest conversation, especially if the facts are not on their side. Hell, they can’t hold one if the facts ARE on their side, they’re simply incapable of straight, honest truth. Hear one thing true and expect ten lies, that’s the way they roll.

i love your ‘loses track of’ statistic.
      from?
and what of the millions of dollars the government ‘loses track of’ every year, the waste that funds who knows what criminal enterprises.

and the ‘register’ remark is not missed, either. Witness the papers trying to get ‘publicly available’ lists of conceal carry permit holders… whether by government overreach or private groups with a cause, any registry of guns represents a list that places those law abiding citizens at risk. And saying that is not so ignores the bill that has been presented in the Missouri legislature… hard to confiscate a firearm you are not aware exists.

JRook, if you do not want firearms, don’t own. It’s your free choice.
But those of us who do… it is our natural right.

what i want to see is the interactive map showing where criminals used firearms against unarmed victims… compare that to the map of legally owned firearms used by a permit holder in the commission of a crime.

Damn right it is none of the Governments concern what a law abiding citizen owns pertaining to self defense. You that are on board with registration are imbecilic and naive.

ROOK, whats your obsession with registration? We legally purchase a weapon, it goes on record already as we make that lawful purchase. The govt has no business further than that of knowing what private property we own & that includes firearms. Case closed.

What are you, a proponent for padding the govt coffers with a gun registration tax?

It wouldn’t bother me that 100K guns are ‘lost track of’ each year. We really shouldn’t care who has a firearm, only who uses a firearm in an immoral or unethical fashion. The person is the issue, not the firearm.

If everyone were responsible and ethical, we could all walk around with guns on our hips and over our shoulders, but then again, we wouldn’t need to.

You have firearms to deal with those that don’t use them morally or ethically.

Taking them away from moral and ethical people just makes them targets for those that aren’t.

It’s basic logic and in that light “any” form of gun control is beyond intellectually supportable.
