NYC Teachers’ Pension Fund Sells Off All of Its Gun Stock: ‘There Is No Need to Support These Companies’

NEW YORK (AP) — The $46.6 billion pension fund for New York City schoolteachers has sold its stock in companies that make guns and ammunition, city officials announced Friday.
City Comptroller John Liu said the Dec. 14 school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., prompted the fund’s board of trustees to review the system’s investments in the gun industry.
He said the board concluded that divestment would be consistent with the fund’s fiduciary standards and overall investment process.
“There is no need to support these companies, whose products can destroy lives and shatter communities in the blink of an eye,” Liu said. “Our investment portfolio gains nothing by doing business with these firms, and this is a sound decision that sends an important message about our commitment to addressing the plague of gun violence in every possible way.”
Michael Mulgrew, president of the United Federation of Teachers, added, “This is the right thing to do. After the tragedy at Sandy Hook, we as educators had to make sure that guns were not part of our holdings.”
Pension funds for teachers and public workers around the country began reconsidering their investments in gun makers after the fatal shootings of 20 first-graders and six educators in Newtown.
The New York City Teachers’ Retirement System is the largest pension fund to sell its gun industry holdings so far, Liu said. Its programs affect more than 183,000 members, retirees and others, according to figures from its 2011 annual report.
The fund had a total of $13.5 million invested in five gun makers including Smith & Wesson Holding Corp. and Sturm, Ruger & Co.
In CONTROL, Glenn Beck presents a passionate, fact-based case for guns that reveals why gun control isn’t really about controlling guns at all; it’s about controlling us. Posted on February 15, 2013 at 1:39pmAs it is, 5 firearm manufacturers have already informed the state of NY that they will no longer supply any government agency or employee in the state with any firearms, ammo or parts.
I too think every firearms, ammo or firearm accessory company should move out of NY immediately. It’s time our citizens, companies and organizations started sticking up for our country and stop drooling over the idiot leaders who wish to do nothing except control us.

Not only did they move their company OUT of the state, denying them any and all revenues from taxes, et al, they also refuse to sell law enforcement any of their product…..leaving SWAT teams holding a broom stick and going “bang!!”

Posted on February 15, 2013 at 2:08pmI’m sure that many other states, such as Texas or Montana, would welcome those companies with open arms and huge tax breaks. When buying a new Colt, I would prefer a Texas-made Colt to one made in Connecticut.

Posted on February 15, 2013 at 3:13pmWith that much money invested in companies to make a profit, it makes you wonder what other “inappropriate” investments these fools might be involved in. Except that they are hypocrites wanting to make a pointless point, they would go over each and every investment, and determine whether they agree with what that company does to make a profit, and they would publicise the results of their efforts and the reason for their decisions. But this will never happen because this is not the reason they publicised their current decision. They are simply the type of low-life crudballs one would expect to make a politically motivated grandstand instead of offering legitimate debate. Do you really believe they didn’t search hard for a way to make public hay out of this to “look good”? Do you seriously believe they are men of such conviction? If so, then they have already looked into every single investment. But that’s no more true than what they want you to believe about them. Are these honest men of integrity? I think not.

Posted on February 15, 2013 at 4:51pmWell clearly they should provide unnecessary and undeserved tax credits to these companies so that the tax base in the local communities continues to fall and the quality of education, law enforcement, fire response, emergency response, healthcare, etc. continue to be eroded. Similar to the changes that the state of Michigan has done the state pension funds should only invest in NY based companies and companies that are truly good citizens.

Posted on February 16, 2013 at 3:37pmThese teachers need to get their money out and invest it them selves. Gun and Ammo manufactures are the only companies in the US that are profitable. A friend quit a pretty good job in 2011 and went to work at the ammunination plant in McAlester Oklahoma. Last year he made over $90,000 bucks. They work 24/7 and you get all the overtime you want. I read an article in a magazine a while back where Remington made record profits last year.

No worries, the tax payers will pick up all losses for the underfunded and insanely generous pensions… you know the ones where the teachers put in $5 per paycheck and collect $3000 per month FOR LIFE when they retire… at age 50… then they cry when they have to put in $6 per paycheck, HOW UNFAIR!! Boy, wait until they find out the pensions are not indexed to inflation.. and when the dollar collapses that $3000 per month won’t buy a loaf of bread…

Posted on February 15, 2013 at 1:36pmTalk about shooting yourself in the foot. Guns aren’t just sold to the general public you know. There is the military, National guard, private security services, FBI, all state bureaus of investigation, and the list goes on and on. Then consider all the associated products sold by the same companies to the same government entities. So to make a political point they will no longer invest money in these companies because these companies sell to law abiding citizens. What a bunch of idiots. If members of the NYC teachers union had any since at all they would put their retirement money in someone else’ s hands. They might also consider to stop wasting their money supporting the teachers union. Looks to me like their dues are only getting them ripped off. Well, you know how some are. They’ll ride that gravy train till the wheels fly off.

Where do this pinhead think law-enforcement and military procurement get their sidearms and small-arms? S&W, Glock, Colt, Ruger, Springfield Arms, Remington and so many other firearms companies sell to both civilian, enforcement and military. Without the civilian market, far fewer new improvements would be available.

They should put their money in the credit default swaps (Like Tx teachers union did) that killed our economy. That’ll fix these hypocrits. Last I looked it was not the gun industry that caused any of this.
