Stunning Pics & Video: Reports of Many Injuries From Meteorite Strike in Russia’s Ural Mountains
UPDATE:
MOSCOW (TheBlaze/AP) — A Russian health official says nearly 1,000 people have sought help for injuries caused by a meteor that exploded in the sky, blasting out countless windows.
Chelyabinsk health chief Marina Moskvicheva, said Friday that 985 people in her city had asked for medical assistance. The Interfax news agency quoted her as saying 43 were hospitalized.
The Russian Academy of Sciences said the meteor – estimated to be about 10 tons – entered the Earth’s atmosphere going at least 54,000 kph (33,000 mph). It shattered about 30-50 kilometers (18-32 miles) above the ground, releasing several kilotons of energy above the Ural Mountains.
The European Space Agency said it was not related to the asteroid currently slated to buzz by earth about 17,000 miles away.
There are also rumors that the meteor was intercepted by rockets, but that is unconfirmed.

Original story and videos below.
MOSCOW (AP) — A meteor streaked across the sky above Russia’s Ural Mountains on Friday morning, causing sharp explosions and reportedly injuring around 100 people, including many hurt by broken glass.
Fragments of the meteor fell in a thinly populated area of the Chelyabinsk region, the Emergency Ministry said in a statement.
Interior Ministry spokesman Vadim Kolesnikov said 102 people had called for medical assistance following the incident, mostly for treatment of injuries from glass broken by the explosions.
Kolsenikov also said about 600 square meters (6000 square feet) of a roof at a zinc factory had collapsed.
Reports conflicted on what exactly happened in the clear skies. A spokeswoman for the Emergency Ministry, Irina Rossius, told The Associated Press that there was a meteor shower, but another ministry spokeswoman, Elena Smirnikh, was quoted by the Interfax news agency as saying it was a single meteorite.
Amateur video broadcast on Russian television showed an object speeding across the sky about 9:20 a.m. local time (0320 GMT), leaving a thick white contrail and an intense flash.

Russia Today:
A series of explosions in the skies of Russia’s Urals region, reportedly caused by a meteorite shower, has sparked panic in three major cities. Witnesses said that houses shuddered, windows were blown out and cellphones have stopped working.
[Editor's note: Watch past the first 14 seconds:]
According to unconfirmed reports, the meteorite was intercepted by an air defense unit at the Urzhumka settlement near Chelyabinsk. A missile salvo reportedly blew the meteorite to pieces at an altitude of 20 kilometers.
Up to 150 people sought medical attention as a result of the incident, according to the Russian Interior Ministry. No serious injuries have been reported, with most of the injuries caused by broken glass and minor concussions.
Lifenews tabloid said that at least one piece of the fallen object caused damage on the ground in Chelyabinsk. According to preliminary reports, it crashed into a wall near a zinc factory, disrupting the city’s Internet and mobile service.
The Emergency Ministry reported that 20,000 rescue workers are operating in the region. Three aircraft were deployed to survey the area and locate other possible impact locations.
Witnesses said the explosion was so loud that it seemed like an earthquake and thunder had struck at the same time, and that there were huge trails of smoke across the sky. Others reported seeing burning objects fall to earth.
Residents across the Urals region were informed about the incident through a cellphone text message from the regional Emergency Ministry.
Many locals reported that the explosion rattled their houses and smashed windows.
“This explosion, my ears popped, windows were smashed… phone doesn’t work,”
Evgeniya Gabun wrote on Twitter.
“My window smashed, I am all shaking! Everybody says that a plane crashed,” Twitter user Katya Grechannikova reported.
“My windows were not smashed, but I first thought that my house is being dismantled, then I thought it was a UFO, and my eventual thought was an earthquake,” Bukreeva Olga wrote on Twitter.
The Mayak nuclear complex near the town of Ozersk was not affected by the incident, according to reports. Mayak, one of the world’s biggest nuclear facilities that used to house plutonium production reactors and a reprocessing plant, is located 72 kilometers northwest of Chelyabinsk.
It is believed that the incident may be connected to asteroid 2012 DA14, which measures 45 to 95 meters in diameter and will be passing by Earth tonight at around 19:25 GMT at the record close range of 27,000 kilometers.

I am half expecting the media to report that glass is dangerous and that trillions are injured by glass everyday and that it should be banned. They can use the Presidents brother in Kenya as an example that people who live in huts with no glass live a safer and better life.

Yeah right!! Either it was a little chunk that it would never hit, or it was a large piece and if it actually DID break it up, then I can tell you if it had missed, there would be worldwide turmoil going on right now. There would be a “cloud” blocking sunlight, the earths axis would have been affected, and we would be worried about an ice age, however, global warming would be solved.

Posted on February 15, 2013 at 6:35amAccording to some European press releases the meteor appeared to break into three pieces before making impact. Instead of the ‘missile intercept’ I imagine the meteor broke up or detonated and then broke up above the earth, THEN impacted across the landscape.
If this thing had detonated only a mile or so above the earth, Tunguska would be the results, or the smaller blast that occurred in Brazil 1930.

Posted on February 15, 2013 at 6:47amIt was most likely a meteorite. Very high rate of speed and clearly on a non-algorithmic trajectory. Russia’s version of NORAD probably picked this up and based on speed and trajectory you can tell if it’s guided or meteor. Not sure their missiles can hit something going that fast. I Dunno. It could have been a satellite but the fact we have an asteroid coming close makes meteor more likely.
However, a rock big enough to cause world wide damage would be in the several mile plus size. This one was probably the size of a big car. The dash cam video is sweet. You can see the plasma trail.

Posted on February 15, 2013 at 1:04pmOkay…before everyone gets Armageddon on this…
Meteors that enter the Earth’s atmosphere routinely heat up and break apart, this is how we get a meteor shower. The extreme heat caused that ice and gases in the meteor to expand, causing explosions, and then fracturing, and then the little pieces burn up in the atmosphere and never make it to the ground.
Now this meteor was said to have a 10 ton mass upon entering the atmosphere, fairly large by meteor standards. The atmosphere extends up about 120 km so this baby had 100 km at speeds of up to 50,000 KPH, which means LOTS of energy and heat, hence the contrail of green light, elements in the meteor burning off. Meteors typically have large quantities of ice, gases, and metals in them. This guy probably had copper, tin, zinc, and others from the coloration.
By the time the 10 ton original was burned off and broke into three pieces, either from normal meteor physics or stupid Russian missiles being fired at it, a good 1/2 or more was probably gone. Still having a 4-5 tons near solid metal rock coming at you at 20-30000 KPH (air drag slows it down, hence the burning) is SCARY AT HELL! Letting that hit the ground would release on the order of 20M Joules of energy…yeah depending on terrain, the town would be leveled. The factory roof was hit by a small fragment, maybe 100 kilos at best.

This is because it is SO common for ppl to fake being hit by your car- or to purposely cause an accident so they can collect the insurance. It’s rampant. Unless the meteor was coming straight at them, I really doubt that they could have a chance to hit it, even with a nuke. The time to fire a salvo against it was yesterday. Did they try to nuke it? I thought that meteor was too small to make it to the ground in one piece. I wonder if it hit a geostationary satellite on the way in? Why would cell service go down unless it was overloaded with calls?

Russians have dash cams for self preservation, and to save their rubles. There’s so many bump-and-scam artists, bad drivers (think vodka), and crooked cops, over there that insurance companies offer large discounts if you have a dash cam.
Drive like a Russian. (my apologies to “Walk Like An Egyptian” :-)
You too can easily equip you vehicle with not only a dash cam, but a simple low cost system that watches all four quadrants; front, rear, both sides, and records audio. Tiger Direct, ( http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3946798&CatId=6031 ) and many others, sell simple four camera security systems. Make sure and get one, like the above, that uses a 12-volt DC power supply, and simply hook it up so it’s powered whenever your ignition is on. The included 500GB DVR will record about a month of video before it wraps and writes over the previous month. You can off-load your best video clips to a thumb drive, for uploading to youtube. ;-)

Posted on February 15, 2013 at 3:32amIf they only had Kommy Day Care starting at the age of 4, this might have been prevented? We need to build bridges that our taxes pay for, and fund education instead of making private industry accountable!
