Feb. 18, 2013 at 7:39amI wonder if anyone has figured out where that asteroid WOULD have crashed, had it hit the Earth. Shouldn’t be to hard for an astronomer to figure out…
,,,Just curious.

Feb. 17, 2013 at 8:49amHere is a system that actually *tracked* the asteroid:
http://www.virtualtelescope.eu/2013/02/16/asteroid-2012-da14-very-close-encounter-an-exceptional-sequence/
Most other videos show systems that simply pointing to one place in the sky and captured the asteroid going by.
It is substantially more difficult to track the asteroid moving more than 1/2 of a degree a minute and this gives better scientific data on the asteroid itself.
I’ve devoted my entire life’s work developing the off the shelf system used above that is capable of tracking these fast movers (Near Earth Objects); privately, with no government funding.

Feb. 15, 2013 at 2:31pm“Giant” asteroid?
Half the size of a football field is “giant”? Nothing but a grain of sand in God’s cosmos…
Let’s save the really scary words for truly scary things.

Feb. 15, 2013 at 2:28pmI’ve always been curious –fueled by scifi movies– if these objects can pick up unknown elements during their travels, which –even though the object has no chance of hitting us– might be picked up by our gravity and drawn into our atmosphere.
