World Press Photo of the Year Goes to Picture of 2 Palestinian Children Killed in Israeli Strike
Editor’s note: This post contains graphic images that some readers may find disturbing.
–
A photo of the bodies of two young Palestinian children killed in an Israeli strike has been awarded the 2012 World Press Photo award.
The image, captured by Swedish photographer Paul Hansen, was taken in Gaza on Nov. 20 in the midst of the fierce clash between Israel and Hamas. The photo shows the children wrapped in white cloth, only their faces visible, being carried through the street.
According to the photo’s caption information, 2-year-old Suhaib Hijazi and his older brother Muhammad are being carried to the mosque for a burial ceremony as their father’s body is carried behind them on a stretcher. Their home was destroyed and their mother put in intensive care as a result of the missile strike. The World Press Photo described both children as male, but other media organizations, including the Associated Press, indicated Suhaib was a girl.

Two-year-old Suhaib Hijazi and his older brother Muhammad were killed when their house was destroyed by an Israeli missile strike. Their father Fouad was also killed and their mother was put in intensive care. Fouad’s brothers carry his children to the mosque for the burial ceremony as his body is carried behind on a stretcher. (Paul Hansen/Dagens Nyheter)
“The strength of the pictures lies in the way it contrasts the anger and sorrow of the adults with the innocence of the children,” jury member Mayu Mohanna of Peru told the Associated Press. “It’s a picture I will not forget.”
It’s not the same photo of a Palestinian boy who was called a “martyr” and the victim of an Israeli strike but was actually killed by a Hamas rocket.

Posted on February 15, 2013 at 5:19pmI am not 100% sure but I think I’ve seen these kids before on other pictures. Either they photoshop their pics or they have these kids embalmed and pass the around when needed for a photo-op. Palestinians are a sad, weird group. They have the mentality of a coke bottle.

The people I know in the US that were born in Palestine and came here are some of the nicest, kindest, and respectful people I’ve ever met. Stop being ignorant. There’s a rotten group in every country, just like we have the KKK and the Black Panthers here, but you wouldn’t want to be described as apart of the KKK or Black Panthers. Think realistically and logically. NEVER will an entire group be EXACTLY the same. Try to remember that next time before you spew out garbage you heard from your idiotic conscience.

There is a big difference between “Good, Kind, Respectful” Palestinians in this country and the average American. Most Americans condemn the KKK and Black Panthers. Where are all of the Palestinians in this country that should be denouncing the crude behavior of their brethren in “Palestine”?

Posted on February 15, 2013 at 7:59pmTonypro, the propaganda is the pro-Israel diatribes we hear day in and day out. The rest of the world is more informed. Israel is a belligerent nation. They’ve killed far more Palestinians than Palestinians have killed Israelis. Dead is dead, whether by a 500 pound bomb dropped from an American made plane or a 50 pound bomb carried by a suicide resistance fighter; using the same language that we used to use for the French.

So they grab anther person and get him to lay on the board.

Posted on February 15, 2013 at 5:15pm@Jerk,
i’ll grant you Israel kills more, but they are trying to protect more, and are being attacked by terrorists perfectly willing to use their own children to perpetuate their hate. The number of dead does not ascribe cause or fault.
The Israelis are not indiscriminantly killing ‘Palestinians.’ The attacks are focused and are responses to attacks against them. If Long Island faced endless attacks from the rest of NYC we would not be wringing are hands and asking how Long Island could be so callous, and cruel.
Then again, Cuomo would have rendered them so impotent that in that scenario there would be no more an independent Long Island struggling to survive and grow, but I digress….
While it is a terrible photo, it is not the most terrible photo even I have seen this year, or the most emotional or touching. How this photo was selected needs no explanation, the bias and intent is obvious.

Posted on February 15, 2013 at 6:28pmThis is what happens when you place rocket launchers next and in school yards, day care centers, hospitals, etc. They shed a tear for their children yet they do not rage against the monsters that park an anti-aircraft gun in the street outside the wall of a primary school. During the push into Iraq in 2003, the Iraqis did the same thing. They would park tanks in school yards. We never had an exchange with the Russians because (as Sting said) they cared about their kids as much as we do. No such concerns in the world of the jihadi…as part of their propaganda effort, they spend the lives of their children.

Posted on February 15, 2013 at 4:54pmThe Muslims and their cheerleaders in the press have a long, proud history of staging dead bodies to further anti-semitic causes. It’s a tragedy if indeed these innocents were killed in Israeli retaliation to constant Hamas bombardment of Israel, but the parents need look no farther than the terrorists they elected to rule them. Can anyone doubt that had the children lived they would have been raised to hate others because of the religion they practiced and would have applauded the random murder of Jews?

Israel bad: Palestiniands good.
Jeff above said he saw something ‘amiss’ on the pic. He is definately on to something. The subtle colors of near/far is disproportionate, but it doesnt matter.
Propaganda does not tell you that the Israeli’s strikes are always with a view to not harming the innocents, something the Palestians cannot do. One cannot have a rational mind and not see the bias against Israel

Posted on February 15, 2013 at 5:23pmHello John…….It is all anti Israel propaganda. I am to the point I expect nothing less and I find myself not even getting angry about it anymore. I think you nailed it when you said “One cannot have a rational mind and not see the bias against Israel.”
The media never presents unbiased reports or pictures of Israeli dead and injured from Palestinian attacks and in fact color any reporting of these tragedies as somehow Israels fault. If Israel would just give more land, if Israel would just stop building, if Israel would just negotiate………the excuses for Palestinian attacks are endless.
Israel is God’s timepiece and I watch it every day. With the whole world against Israel and the world more brazen every day with their hatred I believe the watch is running down and very quickly.
There will be no peace for Israel, no justice for Israel until Jesus Christ’s triumphant return.

We know for a fact they set up rocket launches in school yards. They love death. Ask them, they’ll tell you so.

This photo is a bad retouching job at best in my opinion. I wish I had a larger image to view so I could really see whats going on, but at first glance I see heads that have been pasted on to bodies at irrelevant proportions, characters that should not be in focus & areas that are too perfectly lit. I would love to be wrong, but thats not what I see.
