World Press Photo of the Year Goes to Picture of 2 Palestinian Children Killed in Israeli Strike

Editor’s note: This post contains graphic images that some readers may find disturbing.

A photo of the bodies of two young Palestinian children killed in an Israeli strike has been awarded the 2012 World Press Photo award.

The image, captured by Swedish photographer Paul Hansen, was taken in Gaza on Nov. 20 in the midst of the fierce clash between Israel and Hamas. The photo shows the children wrapped in white cloth, only their faces visible, being carried through the street.

According to the photo’s caption information, 2-year-old Suhaib Hijazi and his older brother Muhammad are being carried to the mosque for a burial ceremony as their father’s body is carried behind them on a stretcher. Their home was destroyed and their mother put in intensive care as a result of the missile strike. The World Press Photo described both children as male, but other media organizations, including the Associated Press, indicated Suhaib was a girl.

Two-year-old Suhaib Hijazi and his older brother Muhammad were killed when their house was destroyed by an Israeli missile strike. Their father Fouad was also killed and their mother was put in intensive care. Fouad’s brothers carry his children to the mosque for the burial ceremony as his body is carried behind on a stretcher. (Paul Hansen/Dagens Nyheter)

“The strength of the pictures lies in the way it contrasts the anger and sorrow of the adults with the innocence of the children,” jury member Mayu Mohanna of Peru told the Associated Press. “It’s a picture I will not forget.”

It’s not the same photo of a Palestinian boy who was called a “martyr” and the victim of an Israeli strike but was actually killed by a Hamas rocket.

If there had not been an attack there would not be a response and children are not targeted as they are in Israel!

Interesting that Palestinian children are killed by accident by Israelis, Israeli children are deliberately butchered by Palestinians. Where are the pictures of the butchered children?

It is bad when anyone dies as a result of an attack but Israel lives every day with some one shooting rockets into their country. They do have a right to protect themselves. Palestein is a provoker of trouble along with the Muslem Brotherhood. These two factions should be wiped out to the last person. They do things in the name of Mohammed, who was a worthless piece of crap unworthy of any recognition. I wish that Israel would turn loose and wipe them away.

What a pile of garbage. ‘Of course Israel didn’t do it. Israel said so. Here’s a link to our own crap in a lame attempt to prove one of our baseless pieces of claptrap with another…’

If the Arabs put down their weapons, there would be peace with the Jews. If the Jews put down their weapons, there would be a Jewish genocide….

*******–I love (and by “love” I mean in an ironic sense that the absurdly surreal response of many of the Blazers must be sublimated into amusement, lest the sickening apathetic inhumanity expressed shake my belief in their humanity) how so many of the Blazers are apparently SO wrapped up in their commitment to their, Christian Zionist, worldview, their belief that “Israel can do no wrong,” that they can’t even be HUMAN and express the simple basic emotion of EMPATHY for the death of two innocent children in a conflict they had no part in creating and did not CHOOSE to be born in the conflagration between Palestine and Israel–REGARDLESS of where your sympathies lie on the Israeli-Palestinian dispute, how can you fail to show some HUMANITY when innocent bystanders are killed? Even if you think Israel is 100% justified in everything it has done, you MUST recognize the consequences of organized mass scale violence, of war, are spillover onto innocents who have no crime or quarrel in the conflict save being in the wrong place at the wrong time. No matter how righteous and justified you may feel your cause is in war, if you still hold claim to your humanity then you MUST mourn the blood-price paid by the innocent as the natural and inevitable consequence of war. So then, if war is always stained by the blood of the innocent, then it is never good, and only at BEST necessary. If we are moral and humane, don’t we have a DUTY to make it NOT necessary?

    1) If you don’t want your kids getting killed in air raids, don’t allow terrorists to operate in your neighborhood.

    2) War has become so sterile that if you accidentally hit the wrong room from 20,000 feet its a horror. Bring back WWII when you were lucky if you hit the right block.

    3) We need to get away from this idea of half-hearted war. We owe it to our soldiers and our citizens to go in 100%, hard and heavy, and get it done and over with as quick as possible. Then leave.

“1) If you don’t want your kids getting killed in air raids, don’t allow terrorists to operate in your neighborhood.”
I’m sure the British said as much to the Americans (though the massacres and fascistic police controls were substituted in lieu of air raids given the time) when the American revolutionaries (who by the way were a minority of the colonists at the time) took up guerrilla warfare against the British Empire.

“2) War has become so sterile that if you accidentally hit the wrong room from 20,000 feet its a horror. Bring back WWII when you were lucky if you hit the right block.”
That’s what makes it easy to be apathetic to the death of other human beings. But just because of an accident of geopolitics, a person does not lose the equal status as a human being. And we owe a moral duty to them on that account–to value their life at least as much as we do our own (and we should value our lives).

“3) We need to get away from this idea of half-hearted war. We owe it to our soldiers and our citizens to go in 100%, hard and heavy, and get it done and over with as quick as possible. Then leave.”
No. What we OWE to ourselves is to put an end to the NEED for war. War is evil. Sometimes, it is a necessary evil, the least evil of the evils placed upon our plate–but ALWAYS it is evil. There has NEVER been a “good” war.

War is sweet to those who do not know it.

them are the breaks if my kids lived in a war zone they would be in a Bomb shelter most of the time..piss poor parenting here. If they can build tunnels all over the Gaza to smuggle Guns and bombs they can build bomb shelters. I dont buy any of this. My crocodile tears will be shed for the 2nd amendment gun rights of good Americans

It’s not any “better.” This game of “who’s the worst sufferer” is disgusting and besides the point–the point is that humans suffer, that we do not want to suffer, and that our greatest moral imperative should be to ameliorate our suffering. Both examples are both horrific and show only that we have a moral duty to end the necessity of war. Because while war may be necessary in the status quo, it is never GOOD–only NECESSARY. Always and everywhere it is evil, even where it can justifiably be said to be NECESSARY (and in those instances, it is merely the lesser choice of evil). It is a horror that our conditions of life as humans NECESSITATE our engagement in acts of evil. I cannot accept that things MUST be that way, and if you have any sense of humanity, you cannot either.

It’s not a product of bias, it’s a product of disproportionate military power. When one side of a conflict has rocks, and the other tanks (and aircraft, and a professional military, etc.), of COURSE casualties will be FAR higher on the militarily weaker side.

Are you so lost from your sense of humanity that your only reaction to the deaths of innocents who had no connection to a conflict not of their choosing, other than their misfortune of being born in a particular place and time, is to politicize their deaths and deny their humanity? Innocents die in war, and even if you completely agree with the justification of the war for one side or the other, how can you not grieve for the deaths of the innocent that happens as an inevitable byproduct of war? Has war become so ubiquitous to you that the death of human beings, and of innocents no less, can mean nothing? Or are they even humans to you?

Our Country has SO many enemies in the lame-stream media, that it would not be difficult to assume that these “casualties” are mere wax figures. If they ARE casualties of Israeli bombing, then that’s what you get for effing with Israel.

You’ll stop burying casualties of Israeli bombings when you stop bombing Israel, you folk-in-fools…
