‘Political Correctness Kills!’: TheBlaze Readers Respond to Police Chief Who Said a Gun ‘Is Not a Defensive Weapon’

Readers Respond to Emeryville, California Police Chief Ken James Who Said a Gun Is Not a Defensive Weapon

Emeryville, Calif. police Chief Ken James said a gun “is not a defensive weapon.” (Image source: YouTube)

A California police chief recently opined that a gun “is not a defensive weapon” but rather “an offensive weapon used to intimidate and show power.”

“One issue that always boggles my mind is that the idea that a gun is a defensive weapon,” Emeryville Police Chief Ken James said at a news conference. “That is a myth. A gun is not a defensive weapon. A gun is an offensive weapon used to intimidate and show power.”

TheBlaze asked readers whether they agree with the chief’s statement. Here’s what some of you had to say:

CaptMickeyd
A weapon is a defensive weapon when used in defense. Any weapon is an offensive weapon when used in offense. Whether it be a sword, a grenade, a rocket launcher, or a machine gun mounted on a plane. It is the motive behind the use of the weapon that makes it offense or defense.

The police chief should understand this.

Farmhand82
This guy is a moron of the highest caliber. Is he implying then that every time an officer shoots a suspect he is wrong to do so because guns are offensive weapons rather than defensive? Do the police have free reign to assassinate anyone they want then in this guys mind? The logic he tries to present is bafflingly pathetic to the point of being painful. 55 slain police officers is what he presents as evidence that no guns are ever used defensively because…..? I still can’t wrap my head around what he’s trying to argue.

RX4NV
Is it “defensive” or “offensive” is a matter of perspective. A policeman outwardly carries his weapon (ie gun) to show power and intimidate people away from doing something stupid. So yes, to a cop it is an offensive weapon. However, you are in your home at night and someone is prowling outside your door and barges in, the use of a gun becomes a defensive weapon to save your life. It is not intended to show power or intimidation at this point, but to “defend” your life. This police chief has a biased perspective as a cop. I’m sure if he had ever been in a one on one shoot out with a villain, he would realize he is trying to “defend” his life. The trivial fight over “offensive” versus “defensive” is only political, when it comes to protecting my life or others, semantics don’t help.

BONESIII
Why do the liberals have such a base urge to redefine everything? They describe the same things often, conveying the same meaning, but act as if they are morally outraged that a particular term carrying the identical meaning has been used. It’s all so stupid.

The gun is defensive when used to defend yourself. The police chief described exactly this situation. It is utterly pointless for him then to object to the term.

It would be fair to say a gun is not JUST a defensive weapon, to be clear. But to say “it is not a defensive weapon” is indisputably wrong.

To use an analogy, it would be like acting offended or perplexed that a car is called a “vehicle” or “transportation”, and giving the reason “the car often just its in the parking lot not transporting anything. It is used to get people from point A to point B, NOT for transportation. It is not a vehicle, it’s a box with wheels that we use to move around more easily.” This is exactly what liberals do.
Witness also the similar answers Pelosi and others have recently given in trying to deny that we have spending problems. They then go on to admit in different words (sometimes) that the meaning is correct, but object to the term.

Of course, the real reason they do this is to obscure the issue so they can seem “reasonable” when they sneak in foolish, clearly wrong ideas, also usually re-labelled deceptively, like that they want to raise taxes, or ban guns.

SENDTHEMETERORS
I think he should probably retire. He’s seen and heard about too many cops being killed with armor piercing cop killer bullets, something the NRA strongly supports. He’s probably also against explosive bullets, those bullets that explode when they hit their target, such as those President Reagan and James Brady were hit with. A type of ammo the NRA strongly supports because of the 2nd Amendment.

He definitely should step down. His perspective, like that of most policemen, is to protect innocent citizens. His perspective is all the cops and innocent citizens that have been killed with cop killer and explosive bullets, as well as all those people he’s sworn to protect who have been blown away with high capacity weapons. He’s seen too many brains and too much blood splattered on sidewalks and house walls, and too many gun owners who have killed friends, loved ones and themselves with firearms. He’s jaded and no longer capable of serving.

What he hasn’t seen, evidently, is all those people who have saved lives with semi-automatic high capacity weapons, the patriots who whipped out those bad boys to stop some bad guy during the commission of a crime!

The last person you want to listen too on the gun control issue is a cop! They don’t get it!

OLDPATRIOT55
I’ve been a cop for 40 years and have never heard such dribble in my life! People are alive today because I was there to DEFEND them. Criminals are dead today because a homeowner was armed to DEFEND his home. It’s really as simple as that! Political Correctness Kills!

Guns are offensive weapons. They are not shields. The only way they are effective is when they are fired, which if an offensive act. That does not mean the offensive act cannot be for defensive purposes.

Wow they used my rambling post? I actually thought it was kinda terrible since I was literally speechless and having a hard time conveying my disbelief. Not even Obama or Feinstein outwardly deny that firearms are used for self defense. They claim that they support the second amendment for self defense and hunting and that they’re just getting rid of the “unreasonable” weapons that people will never need for those two purposes. If you take their word at face value rather than as simple political maneuvering and incrimentalism, then this police chief is actually undermining the administration’s stance in claiming firearms aren’t used for defense. Even lefties should be annoyed by this guys stupid statement.

Sendthemeteors, I liked you quote in the article though it did have some glaring errors that show you need a little more education on. There is no such thing as a “cop killer” bullet. That is the reason why the NRA refuses to back bans on bullets based on their ability to penetrate normal police body armor. ANY full metal jacketed (the rounds required for military use by the Geneva convention because they cause less grievous wounds) rifle rounds will penetrate normal police body armor, in fact virtually any rifle round will. As I recall, President Reagan was shot with a frangible round. They don’t “explode” on impact, they break apart. The primary reason for frangible ammo is safety. They do not over penetrate and are used by US Air Marshals for that reason. The NRA supports their production and use because inside of a home, they are unlikely to penetrate walls and endanger people on the other side.

Other than those two examples of lack of knowledge, your post was good.

Well, to those idiots, I say if the voice that they believe I do not have the right to bear arms, then they do not have the right to free speech.

He is also openly admitting that he and other police under him blatantly use their guns with every intention of intimidating the public, not just presumed or alleged perpetrators, into not having free speech of their own else they will scare you more with their own guns. This idiot did not think out his Probozo speech very well.

The problem in LE is that no cops could ever admit or go for help with PTSD because they will force you out. Many PTSD people don’t like violence and guns anymore. So most of them suffer in silence and continue to work. I lost a good friend because of it (got to the point where he could not longer leave his house), they forced him out.

This has nothing to do with PTSD. PTSD doesn’t cause you to have liberal views. And I think that just like our soldiers, there are more cops willing to seek help for PTSD although it is more difficult to see in a police officer as it happens over many years. With soldiers it can happen in a shorter period like a deployment. Besides Police Chiefs like this guy has most likely never worked as a Cop much. Most good cops don’t have any desire to be a pencil pushing Mayoral appointee. He most likely was a DARE officer his whole career.

The number of crimes prevented by the simple knowledge of the presence of a gun is beyond count. Go ahead and file that fact under the “intimidation” aspect of firearms if you want. Who cares? The truth is, the crime never happened because the perp saw or otherwise knew about a gun carried by a private citizen. The gun didn’t have to do anything but just exist. Is that an “offensive” tactic? Again, who cares?? That man is just a fool.

Mil-Dot, I know exactly what you mean and there is a good deal of truth to it. However, a lot of law enforcement officers have selflessly given their lives to protect civilians, and most officers would do so if it came down to it. I have spent four decades in state, federal, and local law enforcement, and am not yet ready to give it up.

This is an great example of EXACTLY the type of cop we do not want. Guys like this are why we see stories of police abuse of power. His perspective is that any tool in his arsenal is there for offense or intimidation. Really? Is that why we have police and arm them with weapons? To intimidate us? Come on over an see if you can intimidate me. Bring your gun. Ya might need it.
Someone fire this jerk before he hurts someone. Cops with this attitude are dangerous. Power tripper. A sick mental defective.

Is it not even written on the squad cars themselves “To serve and to protect.” And protect is just another word for defend. So what is that gun on his belt for then? I think he totally believes his job is not to protect and defend, but to intimidate into submission. A couple of years ago, when I first started on the Blaze, it shocked me at how so many people were anti-cop. I was brought up believing that we are to respect police officers. And except for a few personal experiences, I had no reason to think otherwise. But the more time passes and the more stories I read where some cop has overstepped his bounds of authority makes me second guess this altogether.

Anyone who wishes to disarm the public should be disarmed themselves FIRST, as well as their body guards and local police for 10 years. Then I would consider the public being disarmed.

You are right, he should step down, because he is not there to defend people, which is what he was hired to do. No room for a ******* police Chief. I wonder how they even come across someone in a position like this with such ass-nine opinion?

Wiping the egg from my face. I see the MEAT post now. I did get here late and while scrolling down to get a quick glance at how late I was to get to this story.
Okay MEAT, getting your research data from Hollyweird, or just making it up as usual? Reagan and Brady were shot with a 22-caliber Rohm RG-14 revolver. A cheap piece of crap that really could be considered a Saturday night special. Hinkley managed to get close enough and got Brady in the head which did cause serious damage. While the Secret Service was pushing the president into the back seat of his limo a fired round struck the B pillar from angle and ricocheted into Reagan’s side under his arm, which was apparently raise enough during the act of being tackled and shoved into the car. That physical roughness masked the feeling of the bullet strike while the Secret Service had thought that the open but armored door had stopped any rounds headed in that direction. As Reagan felt worse within a very brief time he was rushed to a hospital. I shoot an abundance of .22 quite often and I do not know of any armor piercing cop killer rounds in this caliber. Yeah, they can theoretically be hand made, but beyond the finances of the mentally disturbed Hinkley.
Speaking of “mentally disturbed” have you noticed a pattern with the multitude of these shootings?

If he was thinking, what was he thinking about? What an idiot to make such an absurd comment. But then look at the him with four large stars on his shoulders from a town I have never heard of as a former CA resident. I hope that he is embarrassed because if he is not, then he is even more pathetic than I originally thought.

Well of course a gun is NOT a defensive weapon. As we all knew, and were recently reminded by our government, a SCISSOR is the definitive best choice defensive weapon.

sorry your wrong. Joe told us the best defensive weapon is a double barrel shotgun loaded with 00buck. :)
The thing about this cops statements is that in the police academy I was always taught that the most powerful thing on a uniform is the badge. And if he uses his firearm for intimidation why wouldnt he at least carry one of those terrible “assault rifles”?

The sheer unmitigated stupidity of this guys specious argument is unbelievable. It falls right in with with most of the liberal nonsense being spouted throughout the MSM.
What is even dumber is thinking you are safe only because of your local police or because you have a home security system. The local police will show up five minutes, or more, after the bad guys have gone, and most home security systems alarms are simply ignored by the police. As it has always been, you are responsible for your own security, no one else.
I wouldn’t be sitting here and writing this today if I hadn’t been armed 12 years ago when two armed intruders broke into my home. They had already raped and killed several senior citizens in the county where I lived at that time. They were victims, I wasn’t.

For those of you who do not know the sequence:
      – you dial 911
      – A dispatcher whose qualifications may only be a HS diploma and the ability to type 25 WPM answers and asks a standard litany of “pertinent questions”
      – The dispatcher, BY STANDARD, is allowed 1 full minute to generate a response
      – Depending on where you live, the STANDARD, is another 4 minutes in city limits
      – If you live rurally – well, my Sheriff said: “Just don’t move the bodies”

Whoa I got quoted. Might as well add my typocorrect then. :P Meant, the car “sits” in the parking lot. >_>

And OldPatriot55 sums it all up perfectly. Political correctness makes liberals feel good, while killing people. Somehow we need to break through their fog and help them see this… then maybe, just maybe, they’d stop feeling so good about it and wake up. One can wish, anyways, and pray. :)

Very true. The goal being power hunger. Of course, that is some of them, especially the elites, not necessarily everybody being duped by those elitists into voting for them. I guess I was mainly talking about reaching them.

Of course, ideally we could show even the power hungry why power hunger is bad even for them. *shrugs*

I like what was said in the recent Limbaugh letter and attributed to Reagan, that optimists win. :) It may be an impossible hurdle and I’m sure we’ll always have some of the “too far gone” types with us, but optimism is still the best hope. *shrugs*

Google the words “shooting deemed self defense” and you will find a zillion incidents where people were legally declared to have justifiably “defended” themselves by shooting someone else. And California is no different than anywhere else as far as that goes.

This chief of police is lying because he knows what he’s saying is untrue. The police are attempting to take away our rights by deception.

FORMER11BRAVO, A few of us believe MEAT is the resurrection of the site name here JZS, http://www.theblaze.com/users/jzs/ . His last post under that name was shortly before you arrived on scene so you many not remember him. I am about 99.999% positive they are the same person. Generally keep the same hours on the site, usually late at night, but had occasional earlier in the evening posts. Also, say the same general things, while using some of the same reference points, and have the very same agendas.

They hate themselves so much, that they can’t bear their disgusting personality along with their new character (Which is new in name only) for so long. They need recycling process from time to time getting new profiles. Do you remember the movie Highlander?…well, these are like Highlanders of eternal c.r.a.p., getting new identities. Thanks for the explanation RJJ, I was going to ask about JZS…haven’t seen him for a while…..
