First Barbie, Now Buddha: Iran Reportedly Confiscating Statues to Stop ‘Cultural Invasion’ of Buddhism

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — An Iranian newspaper is reporting that government authorities are confiscating Buddha statues from shops in Tehran to stop the promotion of Buddhism in the country.

Sunday’s report by the independent Arman daily quotes Saeed Jaberi Ansari, an official for the protection of Iran’s cultural heritage, as saying that authorities will not permit a specific belief to be promoted through such statues.

Ansari called the Buddha statues symbols of “cultural invasion.”

He did not elaborate on how many have been confiscated so far, but said more would be seized from shops.

Iran has long fought against items, such as Barbie dolls and Simpsons cartoon characters, to defuse Western influence, but this appears to be the first time that Iranian authorities are showing an opposition to symbols from the East.

FYI Blazers- When the story ran about Iran sending a monkey into orbit many of you were laughing and I posted warning something smells funny bout it don’t laugh! Well after digging a little turns out they did put a rocket into orbit just not with a monkey onboard! Our govt. propaganda tried to throw cold water on this and succeeded for the most part. Well combine that with the North Korean test the other day of a miniature nuclear warhead and voila- Iran and N. Korea are now nuclear and able to build ICBM’s! It’s unforgivable & dangerous that our govt. is propagandizing its citizens on a serious issue! Ought to get real interesting in the ME! GOD SPEED

  Many on the fringe like USER view the arguments relating to Conservative social policy simplistically. They, like USER hear the term “social Conservative” and think only of Jerry Falwell or Pat Robertson. This perception ignores the fact that Conservative social policy has been a fundamental component of traditional Conservatism, an intellectual and philosophical movement going back to Edmund Burke (whom most view as the founder of modern Conservatism).

In Islam dominated countries there is no freedom of religion, no freedom of expression, well actually no freedom at all. There are different sects that fight among each other but they all demand absolute fidelity to Allah.

If you take a close look at England, Europe, Africa and Australia you will find this same process playing out over and over. We are experiencing the same thing in America but thanks to our Constitution (so far) and gun ownership (so far) we have been able to stave them off.

This is not a game to them. This all or nothing warfare that demands you worship Allah or you die.

  SOY. The Ron Paul (Trotsky inspired) R3VOLution had a lot in common with the left… so I can only assume it takes a real life lefty to know one eh? Radicals are often attracted to other radicals.. it’s just the nature of the radical beast. That is why Occupy had a unique fondness for Ron Paul along with mancrushes by the likes of Ralph Nader, Salon’s Glenn Greenwald and Truthdig’s Robert Scheer to name a few SOY.

Do you ever think that these countries are older and smaller than ours and our country is a melting pot of all of their countries? We need everyone to do what they want in our country because we are everybody and everybody here is different. But they (other countries) only want their own heritage because they want to make sure their country stays their country?

In no way do I condone this since I think all countries should be like ours (or how I think our country should be) Or does that just make me an American just in itself. Trying to spread our western infection as I have heard it called by many terrorists. Should we be leaving them alone?

I’m just playing devils advocate. I know the nuclear thing and how terrible they are so don’t preach to me about how bad they are. I get it. I don’t want to live there or think its good. But whats good for us may not be good for them. Which clearly whats good for them is not good for us as we see it. But we are not them are we?
