This Colorado Democrat Thinks Women Shouldn’t Have Guns on College Campuses — The Reason Why Is Causing a Stir

While trying to explain why women in college don’t need firearms for self-defense on campus, Colorado state Rep. Joe Salazar said even if women feel like they might be raped, their suspected attacker might not actually have intent to rape. So please, put the guns away ladies.

“It’s why we have call boxes, it’s why we have safe zones, it’s why we have the whistles. Because you just don’t know who you’re gonna be shooting at,” he said during a legislative hearing. “And you don’t know if you feel like you’re gonna be raped, or if you feel like someone’s been following you around or if you feel like you’re in trouble and when you may actually not be, that you pop out that gun and you pop — pop a round at somebody.”

The flaws in Salazar’s argument are obvious. No gun-free zone has stopped a deranged killer, just like a “safe zone” wouldn’t stop a rapist from assaulting a woman.

Salazar has since apologized if he offended anyone with his remarks. However, he still maintains that guns don’t make people safer on campus.

“I’m sorry if I offended anyone. That was absolutely not my intention,” Salazar said, according to KDVR-TV. “We were having a public policy debate on whether or not guns makes people safer on campus. I don’t believe they do. That was the point I was trying to make. If anyone thinks I’m not sensitive to the dangers women face, they’re wrong.”

“I am a husband and father of two beautiful girls, and I’ve spent the last decade defending women’s rights as a civil rights attorney. Again, I’m deeply sorry if I offended anyone with my comments,” he added.

The folks over at RedState provide some self-defense statistics that are relevant to the issue:

In the vast majority of those self-defense cases, the citizen will only brandish the gun or fire a warning shot.

In less than 8% of those self-defense cases will the citizen will even wound his attacker.

Over 1.9 million of those self-defense cases involve handguns.

As many as 500,000 of those self-defense cases occur away from home.

Almost 10% of those self-defense cases are women defending themselves against sexual assault or abuse.

In somewhat related news, the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs (the same state that Salazar represents) is offering some advice to students who may get attacked on campus, at home or on the road. You can “tell your attacker that you have a disease or are menstruating,” vomit or urinate or you can kick off your shoes and run away.

Here’s the full list:

1.   Be realistic about your ability to protect yourself.
2.   Your instinct may be to scream, go ahead! It may startle your attacker and give you an opportunity to run away.
3.   Kick off your shoes if you have time and can’t run in them.
4.   Don’t take time to look back; just get away.
5.   If your life is in danger, passive resistance may be your best defense.
6.   Tell your attacker that you have a disease or are menstruating.
7.   Vomiting or urinating may also convince the attacker to leave you alone.
8.   Yelling, hitting or biting may give you a chance to escape, do it!
9.   Understand that some actions on your part might lead to more harm.
10.   Remember, every emergency situation is different. Only you can decide which action is most appropriate.

None of the University of Colorado’s advice mentions legally obtaining a firearm and the necessary training, even if just for home defense.

  Ouch, You are right. I have addressed this in a couple of previous comments though. Congressional districts are made up of the people that vote these people in office and continue to re-elect the same. You do realize that Nancy Pelosi, Maxine Waters continue to be re-elected don’t you. Even Jesse Jackson Jr. was re-elected. It took a jail sentence to defeat him.

Seeing as the democrats in office think its okay to “inconvenience” the 87 million gun owners in this country… then they must certainly be willing to actually address the problem:

…nations population 320 million people
…there are 87 million gun owners
…blacks are only 12% of the population (40 million people)
…blacks are responsible for 90% of ALL MURDERS
…make laws that restrict murderous blacks from getting and having guns… more economical bang for buck don’t you think… no reason inconveniencing the majority because of a few bad apples (go after the bad apples… black males between the ages of 14-30 as they are actually committing the overwhelming majority of the murders with (and without) guns

How did the call boxes work for her in Boulder? How safe was she? Salazar is an IDIOT! Someone from the Blaze should have the nerve to call him and ask him specifically about Mrs. Chase. I am sure her family feels entirely different than he does!

  You are forgetting that Nancy Pelosi, Maxine Waters and even Jessie Jackson Jr. keep getting elected by the constituents from their districts. It is not the representatives but the people that keep electing these peoples.
  
  It is apparent that Salazar is in a district that adores him and it does not matter what he says or does, the people he represents will continue to keep him in power.
  
  The only way he could be removed from power is if he did what Jesse Jackson Jr. did and break the law where he would be sent to prison.
  
  Even that would not stop his district from re-electing him once he got out of prison though.

Libertarian/Conservative advice: “Give your self an advantage or equalizer (gun, knife, etc.), and when backed into a corner or unable to get away, fight like hell! Refuse to be a victim. Be your own hero!”

Here are the facts, if you are in a district of people that idolize you no matter what you say or do as long as you make promises to them then they will re-elect you.

People here are assuming that the district he represents are responsible God loving people. No. They are not. They are wanting gifts and this pervert will promise them the world and they will continue voting for this person.

Not hard to understand why people like this remain in a position of power.

“might not have the intent to rape” yeah but they just can’t help themselves…so just because it wasn’t foremost on their minds at the time of the rape, you should not be allowed to protect yourself. During the rape you must ascertain his initial intent, so ladies, question your rapist during the rape, find out his real intentions…. and then if only then, you determine that he intended to rape you all along, go ahead and shoot him. If not then let him finish what he was doing, and go your separate ways….. /sarcasm off! What a bunch of mental midgets, this is akin to the the rape comment about women’s bodies having a way to warn off pregnancy…total rubbish! Wher eis the lame stream media?

My wife is a real estate appraiser she finds herself in a lot of new construction houses about 6 years ago I bought a new gun for Valentin’s day she always has 2 guns and pepper spry she went to work the next day went to a house to appraise she went into the house one of the guys asked her if she wanted something for valentines day she told the perv that she got a new hand gun she didn’t need what he had to offer he asked her if she was packing she told him if he came any close he would find out

Or, here’s a thought–RAPISTS ARE THE PROBLEM, NOT WOMEN WITHOUT GUNS. Women should not live in a society where the answer to them being disproportionately the target of sexual violence is “well you just should just get a gun.” That’s damn near tantamount to victim-shaming. Instead, MAYBE we should examine what it is about our cultural ideas about gender and sexuality that make women disproportionately the target of sexual violence, and often excuse it and/or make it difficult (and in some cases impossible) to report and be prosecuted seriously. Not to say that that’s the case in all cases–but we know from statistical studies this is disproportionately the case for the crime of rape than for other crimes.

  Women are the targets of sexual violence because they are generally smaller and weaker. Men are also by nature more physically aggressive. None of this excuses sexual assault. I am completely in favor of women arming themselves for protection.

Typical asinine liberal logic: everything is based on feelings, and we are supposed to “follow our hearts” and “let our conscience be our guide,” but we can’t trust our feelings because they may be wrong.

That creep may be following a young lady all over campus, but she doesn’t know for sure that he intends to rape her until he actually does, so until he does, she shouldn’t have a gun. Once he does, will she then be allowed to ask him to put it on hold until she can go get her gun?

Al Gore will now come out claiming rape is caused by Global Warming and the media will claim it is so and that will be that. The Government will then send U Of Colorado billions to study how rape is caused by Global Warming and the best way to handle a rape for women is to lay there and let it happen as the more you fight it the greater risk of getting heated up and contributing to Global Warming. Maybe the government will sell Rapists carbon credits they can use for rape to offset the global warming it creates.
