Higher Education: Ivy League Prof Strips Down to Underwear and Plays Footage of 9/11, Hitler on First Day of Quantum Physics Course

On the first day of his quantum physics course at Columbia University, an Ivy League institution, professor Emlyn Hughes figured it best to strip down to his underwear to change outfits in front of his class and play footage of the 9/11 attacks, Adolf Hitler, North Korea and Saddam Hussein.

The “Frontiers of Science” course is reportedly one of Columbia University’s core classes. Watch the video taken by someone in the classroom (Warning: Music in clip contains explicit language):

As Gawker points out, the Columbia University gossip blog “Bwog” provides some insider information:

According to our reports, the first class of the physics unit was running a bit late when the lights went out. When they came back on, professor Emlyn Hughes was in the spotlight.

[...] and he started to undress and put on a hoodie and sunglasses. After that, he curled up into a fetal position in his chair as images of 9/11, Nazi Germany, and North Korea started playing on the projector.

And just when students thought it couldn’t get any more strange, ninjas appeared and smashed puppets onstage with what looks like a samurai sword. The entire scene occurred while Lil’ Wayne’s “Drop It Like It’s Hot” played in the background.

While the majority of the song is literally too explicit to include, here’s a very small taste of some of the lyrics (WARNING: Explicit language):

First I need you to bend both knees, wobble that a** right

Then pop that p****, to the left one time, the right two times

Show a ni**** something, put it on a ni**** mind, come on, come on

Now twerk it b**ch, ain’t no need to hold in it, what you working with

You want a hot boy, is it worth it b**ch?

Then break a ni**** off, let me hurt you b**ch, let me hurt you b**ch

If you want to hear the entire song that was played for students at Columbia University, you can listen to the song on YouTube. But again, we stress that the song is extremely graphic and profane.

“In order to learn quantum mechanics, you have to strip to your raw, erase all the garbage from your brain and start over again,” the professor says after the presentation. “Quantum mechanics — nothing you have learned in your life up to now has in any way helped prepared you for this. Because everything you do in your everyday life is totally opposite of what you are going to learn in quantum mechanics.”

Keep in mind, it costs about $22,000 a semester to attend Columbia. While the crazy antics displayed by Hughes were clearly entertaining to some of the students, some of the parents who are footing the bill so their kids can get a quality education are probably not as thrilled with this particular “lesson.”

UPDATE:

On radio Tuesday, Glenn Beck offered a unique take on the incident — on he admitted his regular listeners might not expect from him.

After a quick primer on quantum mechanic — which he admitted might be hard to grasp — Beck said he thought the professor was trying to make a point on day one:

So I said that I believe this guy is either insane or because I know what quantum mechanics is, it sounds like the ramblings of the insane.  What he’s doing is he’s doing his speech completely undressed.  He’s only wearing boxer shorts and he’s doing it because somewhere he’s giving a boring lecture.  He’s doing all of these things that don’t seem to make any sense at all because somewhere in the universe he does make sense.  So he’s either nuts or he is trying to engage and make a point right away that what you’re about to see makes no sense.  And he’s trying to demonstrate quantum mechanics on day number one.  Listen to what he says that nobody seems to pick up on now at the end of his rant.

He continued:

I think, and this will come as a surprise.  If you don’t really read the story or if you don’t understand quantum mechanics ‑‑ and I barely do ‑‑ I can’t believe I’m depending a professor that is stripped down to his underwear at an Ivy League university but I believe this guy may be genius in his approach.  Trying to get people to understand the insane in today’s world with the way colleges are now and the way college students are now, this may have been the best approach to get their attention.  I completely ‑‑ and I can’t believe I’m saying this because I don’t support very many people on college campuses in their teachings, especially when they’re in their underpants.  But from what I know and what I think happened here, I think the guy’s a genius and I think based on what I know, I support him.  This is a teacher or a professor that is thinking out of the box, which exactly you have to do.  But he is thinking out of the box and I think he’s remarkable.  And brave.  Because somebody looking in from the outside, they’re not going to understand it.

Confused? Watch Beck explain it below:

Quantum physics ? If I had actually paid to go to this class , I would have jumped up there with him and taken away the attention from him By dancing and taking off my clothes. This would have most likely provoked a hostile response from this dirtbag , who is used to getting his **** kissed.

If these pukes want anarchy ill give it to them.
    But they don’t .
They just want power , power over your children, power over you.
As shown in this video . This video shows a power hungry , over bearing ,controlling , beuracrat.
You will watch this video .
    You will watch me
    You will respect me
You will fail if you do not believe what I believe.

Just shows how much you need to do to get the attention of kids these days. Personally I think just shutting off the WI-FI and installing a cell phone jammer in the auditorium would have been a less drastic solution to get the same thing.

This is what $40,000 thou a year pays for? I got to give it to the Socialists at Academia, not only they are ripping us off by making us pay that kind of money for them to convince our own children that we as parents are idiots, bigots and racists who will never understand that 9/11 and Adolf Hitler are part of the Curriculum in a Physics Class? Of course we all know what the damn class is about, 9/11 was done by Bush who like Hitler was a Christian and the Bible was the source of the bigotry and hate that polluted Bush and The National Socialist Party a.k.a Nazis who pretended to be Socialists but they were truly Fascists playing that they were Socialists[which of course Nazis and that godless Idea of Socialism are not related...well just by name but let's just call them Christian Fascists instead than the National Socialists shall we] and that then leads to the study of Physics isn’t it? Wow, these Marxists are right, Christians you are idiots by believing in whatever the hell these very smart people tells you, $40 thou is a lot of money for that kind of indoctrination, last time i check Churches let you in for free, at least that’s a cheap indoctrination. These bastards are making Godless Democrats into Hardcore Socialism for the price of a Park Ave. Condo at those schools like Factories, charging such absurd amounts of money and there is no opposition by the Parents who are force to pay for this? Wow.

I found the sadest part of this to be that the college kids did not even know if those things were real life? It is like a movie to them. We are failing our kids. We now have teachers and professors in high school and college, who would rather be the cool friend, than a teacher. Disgusting!!!!

    @kuruus @9:34pm ” I have trouble with the uncertainty principle (:))
Does that mean that you’re uncertain or certain or not sure and not convinced either way as in looking up and seeing everything from all angles in the light of day? About the uncertainty principle? oh :). I have the uncertain feeling some of these guys projected into the future and added a few “principles” certain or not, just to confuse a few of us that grew up in the 60′s but then I haven’t taken a holographic view either way.LOL

I get it. He didn’t want to just ‘say’ that Quantum Physics is bizarre and like nothing they’ve ever learned before. He created a bizarre ‘event’ in order to make a more lasting impression, because events are more easily remembered than just the spoken word.

Wasn’t Columbia the birthplace of the Weather Underground back in 1968? Didn’t Granny Piven teach there? Wasn’t Obama a member of the Black Students League there?

Mans concept of stripping yourself bare so you can absorb the new speak truth of what their selling is nothing new but it is obviously growing in all sectors of our education system. Quantum Physics ya all? Do we really need a political debate or mulitcultural study here too?

As my ole pappy said, If you stand for nothing, you will fall for anything ya’ll. I added the ya’ll part.

Did anyone order him to go have a mental evaluation? This guy is a nut case. He will attempt to make out that this is just a primer for the course – no it is not a primer prof, but just you making an arse out of yourself in an attempt to show everyone that you might have one or two brain cells.

Hey northwoods, your woods went south with this one. His antics merely indicate that he has no teaching ability and has to attempt to show how classy he is by undressing – and not teaching. Not a whole lot of bang for the buck from this guy. Betcha he is about as liberal as they come. Just another reason for doing away with tenure.

If you were writing for Robin Williams, this proposal would come up?

So when is he coming out of the mental institution? Oh, he teaches at one? That explains everything?

Can you spell “urine sample” please? Oh never mind, Quantum physics is about hypothesis, not scientific fact, sort of like some subjects in political science? You know you’ve lost your mind, when you dream about teaching class in your underwear, then you wake up, and you are teaching a class in your underwear? Bingo? Say hello to the padded white walls of freedom of the mind?

Obviously since there is no word of an investigation that the kids might have spiked his coffee with something, evidently this guy is just wierd, the faculty and staff expect this sort of thing, and another day they laugh and put up with it?

Do you know how much money you can make drilling for oil?

A lot more then teaching in your underwear?

The book Sex, and God at Yale discusses the decline of education at the higher institutions. This behaviors fits into the decline. There are far worse things happening in the classrooms of the Ivy League and other colleges than most people are aware.

    Disturbing decline.

2 questions: 1a. Why did the students not all get up and just walk out? 1b. Have they no self-respect? 2a. Why would a wanna-be theater instructor not be able to teach in his obviously preferred venue? 2b. Why give an exhibitionist an audience? He obviously insulted the self-respect these youth should have had for themselves- GIGO. And they allowed him to do so. I don’t feel like we can expect too much from the upcoming future leaders of America, do you? They ALLOWED him to do that to them. Pathetic.
