As the effects of President Barack Obama’s 2010 Health Care reform overhaul begin to take shape in the new year, the recently reelected Democrat is reportedly losing support from one of his key constituencies on the issue. After originally supporting the Affordable Care Act, a.k.a. ObamaCare, many workers groups and unions now want out--or at least keep the parts of the law that are beneficial for them .
Dean Clancy of The Washington Times writes that groups like the AFL-CIO and the Teamsters are demanding that they be allowed to stay on their current health care plans and receive government subsidies to cover the increased costs that some of ObamaCare’s provisions will impose on lower-income workers. Between June 2011 and January 2012 labor unions representing over 543,000 workers were already granted waivers from the Obama administration to the health care law, according to The Daily Caller. Compare this to the just shy of 70,000 private employees to receive waivers in the same timespan.
On ‘Wilkow!’ Monday, Richard Dreyfuss of the Manhattan Institute joined the show to discuss the longterm costs of ObamaCare and the way unions have approached retirement packages despite changing economic times.

I can’t get over it. It is a useless law that should have never seen the light of day.

Feb. 19, 2013 at 2:14amInclude me out. I have to belong to a union. There’s “union support” and then there’s union support. A lot of the rank and file of my union did not support Obama. In fact a good number of us don’t support anything the union stands for. I started out being pro-union until I saw how mine works. Forcing me to belong to the Teamsters does not mean I’m a Teamster. In fact, as far as I am concerned they’re just another hand in my pocket. The statistics that show union membership waning does not take into account those of us who would leave if we could. As far as I’m concerned my union is a paper tiger. If the unions would mind their business and stick to labor issues, play both sides of the aisle instead of being Democrat lackeys year after year and swallowing the whole Democrat agenda like baby birds, they might be worth something. So, CARNAC, I would appreciate it if you would amend your statement to say, “The union bosses should be mandated to keep it.”

Feb. 18, 2013 at 10:37pmWhen obamacare is finally done away with (and it will be because of monetary problems)…I say we madate that unions HAVE to keep it. They are one of the groups responsible for it in the first place.

Feb. 19, 2013 at 2:05amAgreed. SEIU pushed it and promoted it based on getting the waivers and subsidies. Guess they should have demanded Congress read it before it passed….
