‘Orwellian’: Proposed Gun Law in Washington State Calls on Police to Inspect the Homes of ‘Assault Weapon’ Owners

With each proposed anti-gun bill put forth by Democrats across the U.S., the demands appear to be getting more and more restrictive on gun owners. While the Obama administration pushes for a ban on so-called “assault weapons” and universal background checks, Democrats in both California and Missouri have proposed legislation that would result in possible confiscation of semi-automatic rifles.
Now, Democratic lawmakers in Olympia, Wash. last week introduced legislation that would allow county sheriffs to inspect the homes of semi-automatic rifle owners once a year. Seattle Times columnist Danny Westneat describes the move as “Orwellian.”
The proposed bill, Senate Bill 5737, would ban the sale of semi-automatic weapons that use detachable magazines and magazines that contain more than 10 rounds. It would also subject law-abiding gun owners to random searches by a county sheriff.
“In order to continue to possess an assault weapon that was legally possessed on the effective date of this section, the person possessing shall … safely and securely store the assault weapon. The sheriff of the county may, no more than once per year, conduct an inspection to ensure compliance with this subsection,” the bill states.
“They always say, we’ll never go house to house to take your guns away. But then you see this, and you have to wonder,” Seattle trial lawyer Lance Palmer told the Seattle Times.
“I’m a liberal Democrat — I’ve voted for only one Republican in my life,†Palmer added. “But now I understand why my right-wing opponents worry about having to fight a government takeover.â€
He also said it’s this type of radical bill that “drives people into the arms of the NRA.”
One of the bill’s sponsors, State Sen. Adam Kline (D-Seattle), told the Seattle Times that he didn’t properly vet the bill prior to jumping on board. He claims he didn’t realize the bill authorized police searches.
“I made a mistake,†he said. “I frankly should have vetted this more closely.â€
The legislation’s main sponsor, Sen. Ed Murray (D-Seattle) also blasted the search provision written in his bill, saying it is likely unconstitutional.
“I have to admit that shouldn’t be in there,†he said.
Murray also explained that an assault weapons ban isn’t likely to pass anyhow and the bill was intended to be a blueprint for gun legislation in the future. With the search provision included, the bill has very little chance of passing.
It wasn’t immediately clear which lawmaker wrote the search provision into the bill.

UPDATE: Following up on a tip from a reader, TheBlaze has discovered that Democrats in Minnesota are also pushing for a gun confiscation bill using almost identical language as the bill proposed in Missouri.
From MN H.F. No. 241, as introduced – 88th Legislative Session (2013-2014) Posted on Jan 31, 2013:

(2) surrender the weapon to a law enforcement agency for destruction;

I lived their for 12 years and moved back to the east side of Washington State a few years ago. Best move I ever made. The east side of washington is strictly conservative. Helps to be next to the republican dominated Idaho State. If they want my guns, they will have to find them in Idaho at my buddies house. Laws like this would never pass in Idaho. I think I might be moving across the state border if this crap is passed.

The Fourth Amendment is pretty clear, “The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.”

I am in Missouri I have been writing back and forth with my representative, unfortunately she is a Dem and just doesn’t seem to understand she was elected to represent the people and sworn to uphold the state constitution. She says it could get lumped in with an omnibus bill with wording that is beneficial to her district. (that means she sells her vote). As you and these Democrat lawmakers also know it happens all the time where people sign away their 4th amendment rights. Colleges and Universities enter dorm rooms without warrant all the time due to housing contracts. Even president Clinton tried to get during his administration Chicago south side federal housing contracts to give the government the right to enter housing without warrant. As you know a gun control law forcing people to sign away their rights as part of permit to own a gun is what this is all about. It was put up as a trial balloon and did not go over this time.

Posted on February 19, 2013 at 4:29pmLove, Peace, and Togetherness! Does anyone here remember the ’60s and ’70s? You know, when all those “whacked out” ideas were struggling to take foot hold in America. One of the greatest advances that the intelligentsia made with weak-minded, white liberals was their constant attention calling to the struggles of the so-called proletariat against the imperialism of the USA and the UK. One of those “noble struggles” was the left’s love affair with the IRA: Irish Republican Army. It was a romance of young, good-looking Irishman writing poetry and sniping titled gentleman that swooped the American housewife right off her feet and into the arms of progressivism.
Well, let’s learn a little lesson from the IRA Provo man and his illustrious forebears, shall we? The Irish realized that they were fighting a losing battle trying to get the English to pass just laws over Ireland, so they adopted this tactic: Any policeman, Irish or otherwise, who attempted to enforce the English Laws would be shot. And not necessarily in the line of duty. The shooting would have a much greater affect if the policeman was shot at home in bed. Hey, don’t blame me. I am just taking a play straight from the Left’s own ROMANCES!

I’m close to the Capitol and see these elected officials all the time, I even have many opportunities to talk to them but clearly don’t know what to say about this. No cop I work with is gonna show up at your door to inspect you house…even if this stupid f**king law passed. We have discussed this at every training day since December and everyone has flat out refused to participate Our boss made it a point to tell us he WOULD NOT conduct inspections. As far as any federal law goes, all ranking officers within my agency will not order it or allow it to be carried out. At our agency our oath includes protecting and defending the US Constitution but does not include enforcing federal law. Some of us have taken that oath more than once. We understand the possible consequences, but we also understand our responsibility to the community and the country. We also know that once we cross the line there is no turning back. Posted on February 20, 2013 at 11:48pmYou don’t know **** about me Tex, so you have no clue what I’ll do…and while you are entitled to your opinion, you need to understand something, unless the fourth amendment is repealed, an action that requires another amendment to the Constitution, which requires ratification by 3/4 of the states (highly unlikely), there can be NO warrant less entry into someone’s home, business, garage, shed, outhouse etc, to conduct any “inspection.” An order to conduct such an inspection is therefore unlawful, and we are not obligated to follow unlawful orders. In fact we are obligated NOT to follow them…so no Tex, we won’t be conducting any inspections, not now, not anytime soon, not ever, because it will NEVER be legal.. Most cops know the Constitution better than most politicians because we apply it daily. The idiots who wrote this bill, and the one in Missouri didn’t pay attention to or give a crap about the Constitution. If they did, they wouldn’t have written the bills in the first place. RLTW

Shalom,
That “line in the sand” was crossed long ago in the Roe vs. Wade case.
Once any government has decreed that not all people have a right to life, choosing which people have that right and which do not becomes an arbitrary call based not upon reason or the granting of that right by the creator, but the preferrance of a government that has already nullified its right to exist and exhibited its willingness to casually dispose of those to whom it assigns no value.

Posted on February 18, 2013 at 6:09pmAll these proposed gun control laws coming up across the country are no coincidence. I think one possible reason this is happening now is Obama got his marching orders from the Chinese that they want Americans unarmed so they can then come in and take the assets they want from us without any hassles (since we can’t pay off our debt to them). And the traitor legislators proposing these anti-Constitutional laws want to be on the good side of their new masters, the Chinese, and show that they are good lackey dogs. Or, a possible second reason, is the government knows the economy is about to collapse and they want to disarm the population before that happens.
But make no mistake about it, they are coming for your guns America.

It will be the same old story, investigating suspect on suspicion of some trumped up charge, citizen fires warning shot to have them leave his property, authorities burn the house down and say that suspect lit house on fire and offed himself. I know Dorner was a loony toon and probably deserved to die right there on the spot, but those cops lit that house up and then tried to say that they didn’t do it. Makes you wonder what exactly they were covering up, the populace would have accepted the fact that they burned the place down trying to flush him out so why did they lie?
