(AP) — The violence stretched across 25 miles in Orange County and was as brutal as it was fast-moving.

In less than an hour, a man in his 20s shot and killed a woman in her home and two commuters during carjackings early Tuesday, shot up vehicles on a Southern California freeway and committed suicide as police closed in on him, authorities said.

One driver was forced from his BMW at a red light, marched to a curb and killed as witnesses watched in horror.

“He was basically executed,” Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said. “There were at least six witnesses.”

It was unclear if the victims knew each other or the shooter, Orange County sheriff’s spokesman Jim Amormino said.

“It might have been a random thing,” he said. “We just don’t know.”

The violence began at 4:45 a.m., when deputies responded to a call in Ladera Ranch, a sleepy inland town about 55 miles southeast of Los Angeles. They found a woman shot multiple times.

Jason Glass, who lives across the street, said he couldn’t sleep and was watching TV in his garage with the door partly open when he heard what sounded like gun shots.

Then he heard a commotion and the sound of a car speeding away.

Hours later, his neighborhood was flooded with police, and crime scene tape sectioned off the street.

Glass said a man and three young children had been escorted from the home where the shooting occurred.

“I just happened to be in here when this happened,” Glass said about his garage. “To think he could have rolled under my door or needed a car or needed to hide is crazy. It’s freaking me out.”

From Ladera Ranch, police said the gunman headed north and within 30 minutes carjacked a Dodge pickup truck in Tustin, about 20 miles away. The driver was uninjured, but a bystander was hit by gunfire and taken to a hospital.

The suspect then began firing at vehicles in the area where Interstate 5 and State Route 55 connect.

ABC News has more:

Three people reported being targeted, including one who suffered a minor injury, Tustin police Lt. Paul Garaven said. Two cars were damaged.

When the truck got low on gas, the gunman stopped at State Route 55 and McFadden Avenue in Santa Ana, stole the BMW and killed the driver, Bertagna said.

The shooter then drove to a Tustin business called Micro Center and carjacked another small truck, killing one person and wounding another, Garaven said.

Officers trailed the gunman to Orange, a city about five miles away.

As they closed in, the man got out of the vehicle at a busy intersection and shot himself, police said.

A shotgun was recovered at the scene.

Sheriff’s Department spokesman Jim Amormino stated: “There’s a lot to sort out.”

    Where gun ownership rates are highest, homicide and violent crime rates are lowest.

    Homicide in the US is primarily and urban, African American problem.

    Rural gun ownership rates are very high, yet only 8% of violent crime in rural areas involves a gun.

    African Americans are 12% of the US population – and 53% of our homicide victims. 93% of their killers are African American. African Americans own fewer guns per capita of any demographic.

    Until we can have an honest discussion about who is shooting whom, where, and why we will never have an effective policy.

    Every single one of these VICTIMS – or as DUMBO calls then “VOTERS” – could have not only saved their life but the life of the next person if they were armed. The only difference between the bad person and the good people is that the BAD PERSON WAS CRAZY – BAN ALL CRAZY PEOPLE ! REGISTER THEM AND LOCK THEM UP !

    hmm.. big surprise. In CA, especially Orange County, it is next to impossible to get a concealed carry permit. If you carry a gun in your car, it needs to be unloaded, locked and stored separately from your ammunition (you can’t even have a magazine loaded with ammo, that is considered a felony) – in other words, you can’t use it to protect yourself, say, from a car-jacker. So, while the progressives will use this incident to yell for more gun control legislation, the rest of us realize that the poor folks that fell victim to this cowardly criminal might have had a fighting chance had they been able to carry a loaded weapon in the car. Someone else might have been able to step in and shoot the bastard if they could carry..     Seems we have another madman shooting everyone and then he kills himself before he can say how the federal agents kidnapped him and hypnotized him to go on his mission. I am proabably crazy but I don’t think these ‘shooting sprees’ are randomly happening at the same time obama wants to take our guns. Something is up and something smells. It smells like a federally influenced, obama run murder scheme to disarm us.

      In this situation the stupid and wasteful government used YOUR tax dollars to pay for police. A lot of good that did! They also wasted their time making silly laws, like the ones against carjacking and shooting innocent people. When will they learn that laws don’t stop bad people from doing bad things? The whole thing is just another nail in the coffin for government if you ask me, I can’t think of one thing that they do that me and my militia of black panthers couldn’t do better. That’s why I am organizing a volunteer (panther) patrol for all the public schools and universities in my area. Most of the men who volunteered seem to really love the kids and have gone above and beyond, even instituting a policy of frisking all of the young boys (because they are the most dangerous–sorry government, we believe in profiling). For some of the most dangerous looking (those between 5-9 with blonde ****), they even take them in the back room for a more thorough search (those body scanners are publicly humiliating!!). Which brings me to another wasted government expense…sex offender lists! A list of names, I think we all know what this is for…so the government can confiscate your genitals! I can see it now, Obama just rolling around in a room of schlongs and b-holes.

    Law abiding citizens of California does your government allow you to legally carry a firearm? Or do you have to jump through so many hoops that firearm ownership is practically impossible.No state or local government can infringe on your right yet they continue to violate the second amendment by creating unconstitutional laws.

      Since double-dipping Sheriff Hutchenson retired from LA at 50 then came down to rule OC, she will not renew CCW’s without Show Good Cause. So the short answer is a citizen in good standing is not able to get a concealed carry license in OC. Thats what happens when you put women in charge of police or military (ask Hill about Bengazi).

      It has become a bad habit that if they don’t mention the suspect’s race he is black or hispanic. Their moronic intention is that if they mention his skin color it will foster racism. It makes it much worse in my opinion when they hide it. Not only do they endanger the public with vague and inaccurate descriptions of dangerous people, they give the impression they are trying to hide criminal nature, as if there is something to cover up.
