Police are confirming that bones found in a Pasadena, Calif., backyard are anything but artificial; they’re human. Authorities accidentally stumbled upon the skull and bones, along with animal horns, candles and incense on top of an altar while in pursuit of a trespasser. Naturally, they decided to investigate where the human remains originated — a process that is still ongoing.
A man emerging from the home told reporters that the human bones present at the site were purchased on eBay and are being used for religious purposes.
The individual speaking out, who identified himself only as “Jose,” said that his sister was using the remains for religious purposes and that she practices Palo Mayombe, a faith system that is an offshoot of Santeria. The BBC describes Santeria as follows:
Santeria (Way of the Saints) is an Afro-Caribbean religion based on Yoruba beliefs and traditions, with some Roman Catholic elements added. The religion is also known as La Regla Lucumi and the Rule of Osha.
Santeria is a syncretic religion that grew out of the slave trade in Cuba.
KNBC has more about this shocking backyard find:
Authorities have made it clear that they are not investigating the woman’s religion and that it is the human remains that are of concern.
“The religious aspect of the case is not our focus — it’s the bones,” Pasadena Police Lt. Ed Calatayud told KNBC-TV.
It’s apparently not uncommon to find human skulls for sale on the Internet. One listing that claims to offer a real human skill is currently on eBay for $710.

But while Jose said his sister is practicing Palo Mayombe, an expert who saw images of the altar told KNBC that the symbols appear to be more rooted in the cult surrounding Santa Muerte, the Saint of Death. While both Santeria and the cult of Santa Muerte employ the use of altars, they are not the same.
Dr. R. Andrew Chesnut said worship of Santa Muerte has increased quite a bit over the past 1o years in both the U.S. and Mexico.
“What it really is, is a fusion of medieval Catholicism and native Mexican folk religion,” Chesnut said of the belief system surrounding the Saint of Death. ”The bones themselves are often believed to have special powers.”
Here’s more about the controversial cult:
While no criminal activity is suspected, the coroner’s office has taken the bones and is attempting to determine their origins.

Feb. 20, 2013 at 11:26amIt’s really not uncommon to have bones present in religious ceremonies, look at the catholic’s, they have been praying to the bones and blood of saints for centuries. Wiccan’s pray to nature, buddhist’s are the only ones who truly try to attain spiritual purity without prejudice or hate, people dance with snakes, speak in tongues, etc, etc. My only opinion is faith is necessary to the human condition, some belief of a higher power other then yourself, When you have no faith you spend your life trying to control other peoples and whether you like it or not, You then become a fully indoctrinated member of the church of socialism. The owner of the alter comitted no crime, you do not know if she worships a demon or not. Spirituality is precious and you cheapen your own when you rush to judge with such hate and ignorance. Remember we were directly instructed by Christ himself not to idolize him, and so many do. God is truly great, whoever he is. I give him all my troubles, I let go and hope I make the right decisions. I ask only that she watch over my children. I hope I live long enough to get on that ship and fly to the heart of the crab nebula, if not my soul will rest easy in their arms. Because I have faith in mankind and hope for the future. Until then I prepare for the worst, pray for the best, keep myself informed/educated, stand for our founding fathers and principles, and most all LIVE life to its fullest, and give thanks every day for a blessed life.

Feb. 20, 2013 at 11:22pmBYDAWNSEARLYLIGHT You said:
“look at the catholic’s, they have been praying to the bones and blood of saints for centuries”
A statement borne of either antichurch bigotry and/or profound ignorance. I pray that it is the latter. True Catholics do not pray “to” statues, bones or any relics. In fact, it would be a serious sin to do so. True Catholics venerate such things and the saints much the same way that you evidently venerate the founding fathers and your state house might display a copy of The Declaration of Independence. I would ask you to seriously contemplate your own words regarding this matter:
“…you cheapen your own when you rush to judge with such hate and ignorance.”
You went on to say:
“God is truly great, whoever he is.”
God is who He says He is, like it or not! It is His first rule. I suggest fearing Him enough to be obedient to Him, and learn just WHO he may be. It would be the beginning of wisdom. While you are contemplating that, it might benefit you to contemplate why every one of your statements regarding Almighty God centers around the word “I”. You also said that you keep yourself “informed/educated”. It is to that end that I post this. I hope that it has some effect. I will also pray for your enlightenment to Almighty God. I shall do so in a Cathedral, before an altar, which houses relics.

Feb. 20, 2013 at 11:17amRoman Catholic altars have holy relics in them. They are usually small slivers of bones or hair of saints:
The General Instruction of the Roman Missal, No. 302, contains the following statement: “The practice of placing relics of Saints, even those not Martyrs, under the altar to be dedicated is fittingly retained. Care should be taken, however, to ensure the authenticity of such relics.”

Feb. 20, 2013 at 8:18amIt is said that the male holds the “idea” and the female brings the idea to fruition. This “she” worship of a death statue is so against the holy spirit of life that it’s only result can be damnation. The people tending toward this type are drawing dark mental forces and are no where near salvation. Pagans worshiping the dark recesses of their dark souls.
Also of note, the Vatican has as dark side too:

Feb. 19, 2013 at 6:28pmAgain, the racial comments are so unworthy of this site…and yeah, it is more of a curiousity story than a real new story..which the Blaze has every right to include. Many Hispanics – especially from the Islands do practice Palo or Santeria. Although born here,I was one of them until the age of 35. It was all I knew, my mom having gotten into it when I was 6. All Palo alters have real human bones…all of them. Santeria has animal bones. Palo is more like Voodoo- although both are devil worship – even though those that are practicing it do not believe it is. After being saved over 6 years ago, I look at it now as someone who knows the enemy better than most. I am not ashamed, not having chosen it for myself and use my experience to help others recognize that this is from the devil pure and simple. And as for the article stating that it looks more like a death cult from Mexico, I agree. The bones are not put ON the alter in Palo, they are put in a caldron…yes a caldron or a clay pot….and all the skulls and death orniments- that too is not common for a Palo alter. Go to Miami and in any corner you can find the caldron and if you look in the corner of that corner…you will find human remains. Those remain are kept so the person in possession of the bones can control the spirit of the person and make that spirit do its bidding. – just to let the readers know why they keep them. God be Praised that He has delivered me and my children from Satan’s grip. He is wonderous!

I will gladly Praise The Lord with you! My uncle and aunt attempted to raise me in voodoo, before his death when I was 10. At the age of 11 of it was salvation or suicide, and Jesus had sent Godly neighbors to show the way. I too Praise the Lord, it was over 50 years ago last month, and He just gets better every year!

Feb. 19, 2013 at 5:58pm“Hispanics” and blacks worship insane death cults. It’s not funny or strange. It’s a taste of what’s to come to America as low IQ “hispanics”, asians and blacks mass immigrate here to the point of making Whites a minority (as they’ve already done in California) and become the new racial majority.
As America becomes increasingly 3rd world demographically, expect the kinds of stories you’d expect to hear from backwards foreign countries to start happening all over America.
It’s only a matter of time before we have “hispanic” drug cartels hanging beheaded corpses from bridges all across America and news stories of people and pets being sacrificed in barbaric black voodoo rituals.
And I’m sure trashy White people will get into it as well to show how hip and open minded they are…

Feb. 19, 2013 at 6:34pmYou are a racist. Do you honestly believe it is “blacks” and “hispanics” that are the problem in this society. Most Blacks I know are devout Christians and I can say the same for hispanics…I used to practice Santeria and I was born here and am as white as milk. God saved me and I try to follow His example. Listen to the Brandon Heathe song. “Give me your eyes” and maybe you can understand that we are supposed to view all God’s creatures as something beautiful and worth redemption..he redeemed me and I was deep in the “Religion”… Pray for these people, do not look down on them.

Oh wait…….keep the bones and the altar for all first grade classes to pass from school to school so we can spread this wonderful divesity to all of our children so we will not discriminate against any little illegal kid who may worship in that religion.
