Details Emerge About Shooter in Orange County, Calif. Killing Spree

TUSTIN, Calif. (AP) — A violent rampage that left four dead in suburban Orange County began in the pre-dawn hours Tuesday when a 20-year-old killed a woman in his home and sped away in his parents’ car, authorities said.

An hour later, it was over – but not before Ali Syed had killed two more people during carjackings, shot up vehicles on a busy freeway interchange and left three others injured in a trail of carnage that stretched across 25 miles.

One driver was forced from his BMW at a stop sign, marched to a curb and shot in the back of the head as other commuters watched in horror.

“He was basically executed,” Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said. “There were at least six witnesses.”

Syed later killed himself. He lived with his parents at the Ladera Ranch residence where the first victim, an unidentified woman in her 20s, was slain, Tustin police Chief Scott Jordan said. He was unemployed, taking one class at a local community college, Jordan said.

The woman was not related to the shooter and it wasn’t known what she was doing at the home, said Orange County sheriff’s spokesman Jim Amormino.

Syed’s parents were in the house at the time, fled the residence when shots were fired, and reported it, he said.

Jordan said Syed stated to one carjacking victim: “I don’t want to hurt you. I killed somebody. Today is my last day.”

Jordan said there was no indication of a motive, but he sought to assure residents that the violence was over.

“There is no conspiracy here, there are no outstanding suspects, it was a very, very unfortunate situation, but I don’t think the people here in Orange County have to be worried about their safety,” he said.

The violence began at 4:45 a.m., when deputies responded to a call from Ladera Ranch, a sleepy inland town about 55 miles southeast of Los Angeles. They found the woman shot multiple times.

Jason Glass, who lives across the street, said he couldn’t sleep and was watching TV in his garage with the door partly open when he heard what sounded like gun shots.

Then he heard a commotion and the sound of a car speeding away.

Hours later, his neighborhood was flooded with police, and crime scene tape sectioned off the street.

“I just happened to be in here when this happened,” Glass said about his garage. “To think he could have rolled under my door or needed a car or needed to hide is crazy. It’s freaking me out.”

From Ladera Ranch, police said the gunman headed north and pulled off Interstate 5 in Tustin, about 20 miles away, with a flat tire and other damage to his parents’ car.

A man who was waiting in a shopping center parking lot to carpool with his son saw Syed had a gun and tried to escape in his Cadillac, Jordan said. Syed ran after the car as it drove away and fired his shotgun through the back window, striking the driver in head but not killing him.

The driver “noticed that he was loading his shotgun, so he simply gets back in his car and tries to escape,” Jordan said. “He’s driving through the parking lot trying to get away and the suspect is actually chasing him on foot, taking shots at him.”

Syed then crossed the street to a Mobil gas station, where he approached the driver of a pick-up and asked for his keys, Jordan said.

“He says something to the effect of, `I’ve killed somebody. Today’s my last day. I don’t want to hurt you. Give me your keys,’” he said. “He hands over the keys and he gets in the truck and leaves.”

Syed got back on the freeway, where he pulled to the side of the road at the busy I-5 and State Route 55 interchange and began firing at commuters, Jordan said.

One driver was struck in the mouth and hands. He didn’t have a cellphone, but was able to drive home and call police. Two other cars were hit but their drivers weren’t injured, Jordan said.

“All of this is happening so quickly,” he said, estimating that Syed shot at drivers from the side of the freeway transition for about a minute.

The shooter then exited the freeway in nearby Santa Ana but ran the curb and got his car stuck, authorities said.

He approached Melvin Edwards, a 69-year-old from Laguna Hills who was on his way to his Santa Ana business, as Edwards sat in his BMW at a stop sign. Syed forced Edwards to get out of his car, marched him across the street and shot him three times, including in the back of the head and the back, as horrified drivers looked on, Jordan said.

“They tried to get away. They saw what was going on, they tried to get away and they called police,” he said.

Syed took Edwards’ BMW and next popped up at the Micro Center, a Tustin business, where he shot and killed construction worker Jeremy Lewis, 26, of Fullerton. Lewis’ co-worker rushed to intervene and was shot in the arm, Jordan said.

Syed took the second construction worker’s utility truck and fled to Orange, this time with California Highway Patrol officers in pursuit. He jumped from the moving utility truck at an intersection in Orange, about five miles away, and shot himself immediately, Jordan said.

A shotgun was recovered at the scene.

A message left at Syed’s parents’ home wasn’t immediately returned on Tuesday.

First words in the video “three victims are dead including the sheriffs department, the city of Tustin and the city of Santa Anna” – I’m sure he was referring to the departments that were investigating the incident but the editing in the video made it sound weird.

The guy has a Muslim – Arabic name, but it’s not known if that has any bearing on what he did. In other accounts, they report that children were at the home where he first shot the woman.

  I like how you start off with, “these foreigners”. Very powerful and from the get go, I know where you are headed;) But you ruin it by using the word, “usually”. Have you no conviction? Would you say Nazis are intermittently evil or christians are good on the whole? The second sentence makes it clear that you mean all of them but by now I’m confused with which ones you mean…thus is the dilemma of grand generalizations. You say “they” (excellent pronoun for them) come to America to get a free education from tax-payers. But, are we talkin mexicans who are stupid and lazy, and therefore not prime candidates for education, or are we talkin muslims like the one in the article? Apparently, the muslims send their kids here to go to school by the droves but they pay full price for this privilege. Which brings me to my next point, when making slurs, it is helpful to stick to the facts.   How is this possible, I thought California banned all guns.
  
  The shame, of course, is that six other vehicles carrying at least that many people had to sit there helplessly and watch an execution with their only option being to not intervene, flee the scene, and call the cops. Now, if only concealed weapons were allowed, maybe one of those cars would have been equipped with a firearm in the glove box and someone could’ve dropped that asshat before an innocent 69-yr old man, still working according to the story, had to be executed.

First I give my prayers to the victims, and their families, to include the murderer.

Can’t wait to see how this gets spun into the anti-gun agenda.

I wonder if he was on psychotropic meds, or if it was a suicide jihad event.

In any case, it won’t get reported unless it fits the agenda. They’ll have a hard time tying this guy to the tea party, or Christian organizations, but I’m sure that won’t stop them from trying.

Finally, in a completely different direction…I would love to know more about you. Do you have a job or friends, and do you share these opinions with them? If this is just a statement you are making because it is anonymous, it’s not interesting, but if you openly think and then say things like this in your daily life, I want to know more…I am fascinated. I would seriously pay you for your time, and I’m not trying to be rude. In all honesty, people say way worse things on this site, but they are usually being racist and blatant in their outrageous ‘joke’. There is something about killing the parents that seems genuine, it seems like you are person who says what they think even if it isn’t outrageously racist or questionably funny…killing the parents is just plain and simple. It would be similar to someone reading an article about mexican drug cartels and responding, we should blow up mexico. No racism, not funny, just simple, maybe a bit extreme, point of view.

That Mobil station is just up at the corner from where I live. I stop there many mornings on my way to work. Didn’t know what was going on when I left home this morning but a police helicopter was just hovering right over the corner there when I got in my car to leave. Something evil is happening in this world right now. My prayers are with the victims. I’m grateful for angels watching over me.

  If there were no restrictions on gun ownership–perfect world, right?–and a felon or mentally ill person or angry guy who just lost his job, if they got a gun in a situation where our current laws would have prevented the purchase, who’s fault would it be when they killed someone? I’m pro-guns, I just want to know, in what situation would it be my fault for supporting the unrestricted access to firearms…I think never, because I’m not the person who pulled the trigger. Or, maybe never because it is all Obama’s fault (just kidding). Even as a person who opposes most regulations, I can see some value in having basic restrictions in place. Even if only legal owners follow the regulations, having formal restrictions makes harmful crimes more difficult to attempt and makes opportunistic gun crimes much less likely.

  I’m a legal gun owner that follows regulations and it isn’t any more difficult for me to attempt an opportunistic gun crime. The difference is that I’m a responsible person that chooses not to abuse the rights of others with an otherwise inanimate object.
  
  The issue is that lawmakers can’t legislate responsibility towards people already predisposed to criminal behavior, so they impose draconian measures onto the law-abiding.

  You’re saying that laws and regulations are simply for control and you imply they have no deterring effect on crime. So, technically the gov wastes their time making silly laws, like the ones against carjacking and shooting innocent people. When will they learn that laws don’t stop bad people from doing bad things? Like you said, “lawmakers can’t legislate responsibility towards people already predisposed to criminal behavior”. That’s why I am organizing a volunteer patrol for all the public schools and universities in my area–like sherriff Arpaio has done. Most of the men who have volunteered already seem to really love the kids and have gone above and beyond, even instituting a policy of frisking all of the young boys (because they are the most dangerous–sorry government, we believe in profiling). When someone looks especially questionable my men take the boy in the back for a more thorough search (those body scanners are destroying our liberty!). Which brings me to another wasteful government CONTROL or regulation…sex offender lists! A list of names! I think we all know what that ‘draconian measure’ is for…so the government can confiscate your genitals!
  
  On a separate note, if you are so law-biding, and if you were in a ‘gun-free’ zone like a school or a church, how exactly would you attempt an opportunistic gun crime? You said you could do this in your response right after you said, “ummmm, wrong”.

  Nlitend1, laws generally do not stop criminals. What they do is allow us to lock them up afterward. That’s why we have strict penalties for using a gun in the commission of a crime, so we can lock those people up longer. Laws prohibiting legal ownership and use of guns are not needed, as they won’t stop criminals. The only thing we can do is have incredibly strict laws for committing violent feloneous acts.

  Here’s an example of what I mean:
  
  1) Speed-limit laws don’t stop speeders…..only honorable people obey them.
  2) Murder laws don’t stop murder…..only honorable people don’t commit malicious crimes.
  3) Gun restrictions don’t restrict criminals…..they only restrict honorable people.
  
  The bottom line is that “fences only keep honorable people from trespassing”. The only true deterrent is the execution of the punishment after the fact which MIGHT prevent other people that haven’t yet trespassed.
  
  Like I said before, I’m a legal firearms owner and there’s nothing keeping me from committing a crime of opportunity and there’s no “law” that can deter that. I “choose” NOT to commit a crime against another person with my firearm because it would be immoral and wrong.
  
  What we are seeing with all of this AWB legislation is in effect making self-defense a legal privilege for the people who have status, or can otherwise afford it. It is totally and unequivocally unconstitutional on its face.
  
  BTW, I applaud your efforts with the volunteer patrol.

  I appreciate you answering my post, and although I disagree with most of your logic, I don’t disagree with your basic position that self-defense is important, even essential to many (in heavily populated areas with a lot of law enforcement, it is less essential and more likely to be a net negative). I’m not against gun rights or gun ownership, and I stand firmly against registration, however, I would like to see more enforced regulations that promote general safety. I understand why every gun law is seen as a slippery slope by gun advocates, but that shouldn’t negate common sense. While I don’t mean this offensively, by what you have written, you are clearly lacking some very common sense. First, you think speed limits don’t prevent speeding. really? it’s not important, but…you can’t be serious. Then you say that murder laws don’t deter either. Did you really type this without thinking about what you were saying? At the end of your post, you applaud my volunteer pedophile patrol, that’s gotta be a red flag to readers that you are being sarcastic, right? Is any of your comment true?

  I’m confused, I figured that since you sounded so confident about this journalistic practice, that you were probably right…but, I started looking for some examples and I couldn’t find any. I looked up murder on google news and I looked at 15 articles and glanced at a few more pages of results to see if the headlines had references to white people but not black people. The only racially descriptive things I found were from traditionally right-wing news sources, and they only specified when black people (african americans) were involved. That’s odd. Are you sure you didn’t make a mistake passing along this information? maybe you have some odd form of dyslexia that makes you think that you read something backwards, when actually you read nothing and were just making cr@p up.   2 of your articles provide pictures of the suspect (1 being a nationally known story) and the other is from a local news agency in San Jose.
