This Local Gun Ad Was Banned By Comcast — And We Found It’s a New Widespread Policy

Comcast, which recently acquired NBC Universal, has quietly decided to remove advertisements promoting firearms from its cable network, and gun retailers aren’t happy about it.
A Michigan company that handles the advertising for Michigan-based Williams Gun Sight and Outfitters contacted TheBlaze regarding the change, stunned that it couldn’t re-air a commercial they played last fall due to the new policy.
John Kupiec, president of the advertising agency Canadian American Corp., told us over the phone Monday that when they recently tried to buy ad time, a Comcast representative informed them that as of February 8 of this year, the network would no longer accept advertising from companies promoting firearms or fireworks on any network, during any time period.
“They’ve been a longtime advertiser [but] they said it doesn’t matter who they are,” Kupiec related, “if they sell firearms they will not be allowed to advertise firearms on their airwaves.”
He noted that the change doesn’t just impact local companies, but business like Cabela’s, Walmart, and others.
“My company has been in the advertising business for well over 30 years, [and] we’ve never remotely run into a situation where a product or service was banned from being on the airwaves that’s legal,” he added.
Here’s the commercial that Comcast declined to air:
TheBlaze attempted to get in touch with several Comcast representatives to ask why the decision was made now, what they hope to accomplish, and whether they plan to change their scheduled programming that features guns, but only one responded.
Chris Ellis, the director of communications at Comcast Spotlight, confirmed the new policy but declined to provide any supplementary information.
“Consistent with long standing NBC policies, Comcast Spotlight has decided it will not accept new advertising for firearms or weapons moving forward,” he said in an email.Β “This policy aligns us with the guidelines in place at many media organizations.”
Tom Wright, the president of Williams Gun Sight Co., told TheBlaze that he thinks the change is “ridiculous.”
They’re “fine promoting strip clubs and condoms,” Wright said, but appear to have a problem airing advertisements for a legal product.
ABC 12 also interviewed Wright for the evening news.Β Here’s what he had to say:
Both Wright and Kupiec further noted that at almost any given time, you can flip to regular programming that features guns in a legal capacity (the Outdoor Channel, the Sportsman Channel, NBC Sports), or in a violent scene of a television show or movie.
Is Comcast planning on making changes to their scheduled programming, too, they wondered?
Before speaking with TheBlaze on Monday, Wright urged people on Facebook to speak out with their dollars:

(Photo: Facebook/Williams Gun Sight & Outfitters)
Wright added for TheBlaze: “I donβt know whether NBC or Comcast have an agenda related to all the political activity going on, but it wouldnβt surprise me.”
The president ofΒ Williams Gun Sight and Outfitters concluded with a statement on how the change will affect his company.
“It certainly has the ability to negatively impact our business.Β Weβve been in business for over 85 years; we provide a service to not only the hunting and shooting community, but weβre part of a longstanding tradition here in America.Β I think it’s a sad state of affairs where a cable network such as Comcast would come out with such a policy.”

Posted on February 19, 2013 at 12:08pmIt’s fine if they want to stop gun ads on their network, as long as they are equally fair, and do not air any programs that show ANY images of guns, being used in any capacity.
Oh my that might mean they would have to shut down then. No more cop shows, no more action movies, no hunting programs, etc.
What a bunch of straight up HYPOCRITES,

It’s not that hard to give up cable or satellite TV. My wife and I did so over a year ago and have not missed it a bit. I would also suggest that you do like I am doing and send a link to all your contacts. This is the only way we can fight back. By not giving them the few dollars we have left. Stop supporting Hollywood. Stop renting and buying movies, stop going to the movies, stop streaming anything out of Hollywood. If Comcast is your internet provider find another one. Stand up to these tyrants the only way you can at this time. By closing your wallet.

Posted on February 19, 2013 at 5:00pmI now actively don’t spend my money at Cabela’s. I have had an order placed with them since early December (.223 ammunition). I have on a monthly basis received and email stating it was still on backorder. Just yesterday I had to respond to another email indicating that I needed to take action to keep my order pending (ammo is much more expensive now than when I ordered it.) I chose to keep it.
Today, I got the following regarding my order:
We are sorry to inform you that your order for .223REM 55GR MC-30 is being cancelled.
Due to dramatic changes in market conditions, Cabelaβs has cancelled backorders for certain high-demand products. As always, it is our goal to deliver the same top-quality products and high level of service you have come to expect from Cabelaβs. However, we believe it better to cancel backorders than to present unrealistic expectations to our valued customers.
Please accept our apologies for this inconvenience and Thank You for being a valued Cabelaβs customer!
I guess it makes good business sense to let the market bear what it will….except I won’t be part of Cabela’s market any longer. Just thought I’d share.

It’s not against the law for a private organization to not advertise something. If I were a private business owner, I don’t think the constitution requires that I have to advertise something I don’t agree with like say abortion pills or Nazi flags as a couple of random examples. Please stop hip shooting that everything is unconstitutional. It does disservice to the constitution. And why does suing always seem to be the answer for everything? It’s the sign of a narcissistic society who think everybody owes thy great self.
If you don’t like what they are selling, simply turn it off. That’s what I did. Roku, Ham radio and internet radio,(the greatest thing since sliced bread) does just fine for me.

I disagree. These companies are granted access to FCC regulated public airwaves that belong to the people, not the broadcaster. If they chose to discriminate against gays would you expect that they would be untouched by the government? If they choose to use the public airwaves they should be prevented from political or any other form of discrimination. The hypocrisy of refusing this ad while they air programs that glamorize gun violence is amazing, isn’t it? Isn’t it just time to vote with your feet and just ignore them?

Bicycle, why do you hate America? Why do you hate the free market? Seriously, do you want the government to tell broadcasting companies who they have to do business with? Why don’t you go live in North Korea where they government has complete control over television and radio? This topic is about freedom of American companies. Posted on February 19, 2013 at 2:14pmI’m right there with ya. I moved back in June 2012 and got Comcast for the cable internet. Their company is the worst run outfit I have ever dealt with. It took 4 trips to hook things up correctly and to top it off, they had to install a new line from the pole to my house. The installer didn’t have a cable long enough, so he “temporarily” ran it over my driveway. I have called them and set up multiple appointments to have this fixed to no avail. So, 8 months later there is still a cable laying on my driveway. After reading this, I think I’m gonna cut it and call them to come and get their crap.

They’re a private company so they have the right to refuse service to anyone they want (unless they receive federal money) so there is no way they could (or at least should) be touched in court. This has to be settled by their subscribers finding a new provider.

The same is happening with Dear Leader, he might not starve people to death but he will make it tougher and tougher on your and others pocketbooks to get his way. He did buy his reelection with Obamacare.
The main article of the day on Dear Leader and his organization being the puppet masters is correct they are very good when it comes to the IO campaign. Why do you think FaceBook just received those huge tax breaks. This is very Pre WWII like in Germany when Dear Hitler was consolidating power, companies starting to align themselves up with who they thought would win and stay in power. They start to do the leaders bidding. Others died out, where driven under, or packed up and left.
