Politico article criticizes Obamas relationship with the press

“President Barack Obama is a master at limiting, shaping and manipulating media coverage of himself and his White House.”

If anyone asked you where those remarks came from, you’d likely say it was some conservative news outlet or blog. You might even say it was the rant of a Republican pundit.

But you would be wrong on all levels.

That quote is actually the opening line to a scathing, four-page column by Jim Vandehei and Mike Allen on Politico.

“Not for the reason that conservatives suspect: namely, that a liberal press willingly and eagerly allows itself to get manipulated,” the column continues, offering a defense for the press and placing full blame on the White House. “Instead, the mastery mostly flows from a White House that has taken old tricks for shaping coverage (staged leaks, friendly interviews) and put them on steroids using new ones (social media, content creation, precision targeting). And it’s an equal opportunity strategy: Media across the ideological spectrum are left scrambling for access.”

Still, in the accompanying video version of the story, Vandehei admits that while the critique of Obama being a “puppet master” who pulls strings to get favorable coverage is generally a conservative critique, it is an “accurate one”:

The anger from the press came to a head this past weekend when the press corps wasn’t allowed full access to the president’s golf vacation (read our original story here).”That breached the tradition of the pool ‘holding’ in the clubhouse and often covering — and even questioning — the president on the first and last holes,” Politico explains.

The Politico article is filled with plenty of shots at the president and administration that vowed to be the most transparent. So we’ve included 10 of the most scathing sections that capture just how icy the press relationship has become.

9. “The White House gets away with stuff I would never have dreamed of doing. When I talk to White House reporters now, they say it’s really tough to do business with people who don’t see the need to be cooperative.” — Former Bill Clinton Press Secretary Mike McCurry

8. The president has shut down interviews with many of the White House reporters who know the most and ask the toughest questions. Instead, he spends way more time talking directly to voters via friendly shows and media personalities. Why bother with The New York Times beat reporter when Obama can go on “The View”?

7. Obama boasted Thursday during a Google+ Hangout from the White House: “This is the most transparent administration in history.” The people who cover him day to day see it very differently.

6. “The way the president’s availability to the press has shrunk in the last two years is a disgrace,” said ABC News White House reporter Ann Compton, who has covered every president back to Gerald R. Ford. “The president’s day-to-day policy development — on immigration, on guns — is almost totally opaque to the reporters trying to do a responsible job of covering it. There are no readouts from big meetings he has with people from the outside, and many of them aren’t even on his schedule. This is different from every president I covered. This White House goes to extreme lengths to keep the press away.” [Emphasis added]

5. But something is different with this White House. Obama’s aides are better at using technology and exploiting the president’s “brand.” They are more disciplined about cracking down on staff that leak, or reporters who write things they don’t like. And they are obsessed with taking advantage of Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and every other social media forums, not just for campaigns, but governing.

4. Conservatives assume a cozy relationship between this White House and the reporters who cover it. Wrong. Many reporters find Obama himself strangely fearful of talking with them and often aloof and cocky when he does. They find his staff needlessly stingy with information and thin-skinned about any tough coverage. He gets more-favorable-than-not coverage because many staffers are fearful of talking to reporters, even anonymously, and some reporters inevitably worry access or the chance of a presidential interview will decrease if they get in the face of this White House. 3. *The super-safe, softball interview is an Obama specialty. The kid glove interview of Obama and outgoing Secretary of State Hillary Clinton by Steve Kroft of CBS’s “60 Minutes” is simply the latest in a long line of these. Obama gives frequent interviews (an astonishing 674 in his first term, compared with 217 for President George W. Bush), but they are often with network anchors or local TV stations, and rarely with the reporters who cover the White House day to day.

2. * There’s the classic weekend document dump to avoid negative coverage. By our count, the White House has done this nearly two dozen times, and almost always to minimize attention to embarrassing or messy facts. “What you guys call a document dump, we call transparency,” the White House’s Earnest shot back. If that’s the case, the White House was exceptionally transparent during the Solyndra controversy, releasing details three times on a Friday.

1. * While White House officials deny it is intentional, this administration —like its predecessors — does some good old-fashioned bullying of reporters: making clear there will be no interviews, or even questions at press conferences, if aides are displeased with their coverage.

The MSM and Obama are the political version of the old conundrum: what came first, the chicken or the egg ? They have a symbiotic relationship : the American media has always swung Left but after the Soros International ” investment ” influence , the MSM created Obama whose administration has been feeding their Media Beast ( remember the Zimmerman trial ? 60 minutes ? the New York Times leaks ? the View ? Letterman? Stewart ? Leno ? the Muhammad video Sunday news lies ? ) ever since. Sounds like the Media Beast hasn’t been getting enough ” meat” lately ! The Beast does not like to go on a diet. I only hope that the Beast will start to bite the manipulative hand that has been feeding it a very bad diet of baloney .

  I heard this story before..as we ramped the war machine after 9/11..a few in the press were yelling slow down, investigate etc etc..they were not “patriotic”..were pro Muslim radicals etc etc…the press went along with it long enough to have us invade two countries that had little or nothing to do with 9/11..WMDs etc etc…the press turned on Bush after the falsehoods and slanted press releases fell apart…look like it’s Barry’s turn…better late than never I suppose..maybe we can avoid more wars…maybe not. The MSM liked Barry more than Bush so they excused his evasions longer but eventually reality has a way of forcing itself upon you. The truth appears to have arrived, apparently sent by USPS…late, but got here.

  This article doesn’t add up. On the one hand there are all these quotes from reporters talking about how they hate the way they are treated by the Obama administration. And on the other, there’s the idea that this administration usually gets unqualified, positive press. So the press hates the administration, but all the news about the administration is positive.
  
  There’s also this idea that this administration is trying to use the press to create a positive image, as though that’s something new in American history. Whatever.
  
  Republicans have a problem, but, like an alcoholic, have not yet admitted to themselves they have a problem. So what do we hear? People only like the President because he manipulates the press. And people can’t stand Republicans because they aren’t getting their “message” out (actually the problem is they are getting their message out).
  
  There’s a simpler explanation. The average American likes the ideas of the Democrats, and they realize their interests aren’t represented by Republicans.

They have had at least two years to make this man’s fear of intelligent questioning on the front page, and they have not. Now, after his second inauguration, a leftist outlet decides to actually print an article on this and expect to prove the doubters wrong.   Walkabout, actually it was originally Dick Cheney who said to Bush, “Deficits don’t matter. Reagan proved that.” Reagan and Bush proved that. Deficits only matter if a Democrat is president, at least according to Republicans. Reagan deficits, Bush deficits, who cares? Where was the Tea Party then? Nope, just when a Democratic president was elected, this particular president especially, if you know what I mean.
  
  Oh well. Walkabout, the US is about to learn how right Krugman is. When Republicans get their wish, and the sequester kicks in, along with all the dramatic cuts in governments, we’re going to see what happens. I predict that the unemployment rate will skyrocket. You know, all those government jobs, including in the military, that are going away. And of course that’ll put more people on unemployment which cost the government money, unless you want to the US to deny those benefits.
  
  But here’s the Krugman point. All those people – and it’s a lot of people, millions – who have lost their jobs, including the military? They are going to stop spending money. They have to since their paycheck is gone. So they stop buying stuff. GDP goes down, US tax revenue decreases, unemployment claims go up.

  ..in Reagan’s 8 years the deficit went from 32% of GDP to 52%…he also had a recession, run away inflation,18% interest rates and the S&L melt down .in 4 years BHO has gone from 86% to103% of GDP..in 8 years Reagan’s GDP went from $3.1 trillion to $5.1 trillion…BHO GDP 14.2 to 15.8 in 4 years…in some ways it’s not fair to either man to compare, however Reagan’s policies proved to pave the way for Bush1 and Clinton’s economic success…Bush2 ended any doubt that Republicans can waste OPM as good as any liberal…the solution is better economic times, will borrowing money and spending it provide prosperity?..reason would say it’s not possible..do we need to borrow and spend to help people until good times returns?…that is really the debate…sadly we seem to not have a government any longer just sides and a organizer in charge when we need a leader…rudderless for 12 years takes it toll on a nation..from 1980 to 2000 I think we had some pretty good folks running things, Rs and Ds, bit more R I think ,but we were still all in it together..not any more,that’s worse than any policy.

  Here is the thing. We all know what has been going on and if the media is as wimpy as they are now claiming to be then shame on them! But I think it is arrogance on steroids! The POTUS refused to do any media with Woods because Woods would have upstaged POTUS and we all know that could never happen and the reporters were salivating to get that big Woods interview and their egos were so bruised by the arrogance of POTUS! Not that it matters, nothing will change and Obama, now with his gloves off and swinging away, will continue to not only insult and destroy the press, he will continue to destroy this country as well. That is most evident in the change (and I mean that literally) in the nasty tone his voice has been taking on lately with the press as he responds to any questions. He knows he can do what he wants like a petulent child. He owns the F’n playground! Pay him to play, get out of his face, or you will no longer have a face. And even if I were to believe the presses’ excuses that they were just wussie about the whole thing, I have even less confidence then that they will go after this guy now or in the future.
  I think we should all prepare ourselves for four more intensifying years of unabated hell before we can even attempt to put the fires out. The best we can do is dig the firelines and hope for the best.

If we had hard nosed no nonsense reporters BHO likely wouldn’t have been elected in 08. Since they agreed with his ideology and believed the BS that he was a god they had no incentive to ask the tough questions. Journalism died in this country many many years ago and today they’re just a propaganda machine for whoever has a ‘D’ in front of their name while occupying the oval office. ‘Reporters’ lifetime politicians and child molesters,not much difference between them,they’re all equally vile.

American religion has essentially changed. Historically, it centered around the teachings of the Bible. Shortly after television was introduced, a new Belief System has been pumped into our psyches. This Belief System teaches human biological equality which, in my opinion, has the goal of imposing cultural Marxism and eventually a totalitarian-communist central government run by the people Glenn used to be able to point out before he got kicked off Fox but who now can no longer be mentioned.

Key to this Belief System is that the content of the character of people whose ancestors evolved in Africa cannot be analyzed, or criticized. The reason is that if these people are analyzed, or criticized, the Truth of human bio-diversity can be clearly seen by the casual observer. This is the root of the lack of media coverage of the current President.

I don’t think that Glenn is allowed to talk about the small men behind the curtain anymore, but that is what it really is. Resistance to the right and the truth is futile for the sheeple who voted for this guy. Many will flip on him eventually. Only time will reveal and expose the hardiest of his followers and God willing their numbers by then will be limited to only the hundreds that pull his strings. Like a school of fish in a pond that has been drained to but a puddle of water, they will be exposed to the sunlight and fight each other for the last drop of water and cover of darkness until it is all over.

Most of us on the right follow our own hearts regardless of what even our friends say when things look bleak. They are not capable of this, which is why the left has to turn to each other for affirmation before so much as breathing a negative word against their Dear Leader. I applaud the liberals who are not afraid to confront this man’s policies and procedures truthfully. Their is hope yet that you in the media are not all completely a lost cause.

If the vast majority of the press had the stones to actually do their jobs, either this administration would have to start answering questions- or they would have to stop press conferences altogether and focus on just social media.   First of all the voters are idiots, but that doesn’t matter because Obama was not voted in this time or the last time. It was some underhanded trick on the American people that put him in office.
  
  If you look in to it there was all kinds of talk about voter machine fraud during the last election. My sister herself had Obama’s name popup three times after choosing the republican ticket to vote, she finally had to make them fix the machine before she would vote.

I see the threats of the President and the threats on our economy and the healthcare system that we had is no more while the government still enjoy their benefits.   RayBlay, Would you care to expand on that? I am quite familiar with the meaning of that set of verses and even to the point of history it was written in. However, we do live in the USA and our leaders are supposed to be public servants not our rulers. At the time the verses were written there was persecution going on by dictatorial tyrants. We are commanded to give unto Caesar that which is Caesars’. That means not only paying taxes but also to do our civic responsibilities to our fellow man. That includes correcting our employees in the government.
  Using the same logic you attempt is short sighted. If the president said for every fifth dog or cat was to be killed I am sure you would fight it as unjust. However since it would be the law you would need to obey it or you would be fighting God.

  What actions were taken by this administration concerning the events of Benghazi: Let’s see. Some low rent movie director was arrested and thrown in jail for a parole violation. The U.S. military commander who ordered a drone to Benghazi to establish intel on site was relieved of his command. The FBI was sent to investigate after the crime scene was left unsecured for 5 weeks. During that time a CNN reporter waltzed through the consulate and picked Steven’s diary out of a pool of blood. Of course, Media Matters had determined that while Stevens was being raped and murdered the important story was what Mitt Romney said and when he said it.
