Dramatic Video Captures the Horrifying Moment a Boy Is Sent Plunging 45 Feet From a Ski Lift
What was supposed to be a relaxing day on the slopes turned into a nightmare for one person after he fell 45 feet from a ski lift. The video describes the victim as a “kid” though it is unclear how old he actually is.
According to the video’s description, the guy didn’t have the security bar down on the lift and fell out of his seat. He tries desperately to hold on, his feet dangling and flailing. He eventually loses his grip and is sent plunging 45 feet towards the snow.
“I was skiing when my friend gets off balance and ends up hanging from the chair. He did not have the security bar down. He hung from about Pole 8 to 21, and at 21 he fell,” the description reads. “This was on a lift that averages 37ft above the ground, But pole 21 was the 3rd highest [stretch] at about 45ft high, 19 being the highest.”
He was reportedly taken to a hospital by helicopter after suffering serious injuries, including a concussion, skull fracture, collapsed lung, and a lacerated liver.

UPDATE:
The Santa Fe New Mexican reports that the incident happened at Ski Santa Fe and that the 17-year-old involved is in good condition.
According to the report, the accident occurred on Feb. 2 but was first posted on the Internet on Feb. 18. While the boy was, in fact, air lifted off the mountain, none of his injuries required surgery.
“Basically, the kid is home and he is fine,” Cody Sheppard, the ski patrol director at Ski Santa Fe, told the paper.
“They kept him for observation for a couple of days, and then he was released,” he added. “I’d probably shatter. There is something about being young and flexible, I guess, and just lucky the way you land.”

Posted on February 22, 2013 at 11:11amIt looks as if he was a snowboarder, not a skier. He took his board off for some reason–I think you can make it out hanging down below the chair just to his left. He probably slid off the chair after raising the bar when he twisted around to remove the board.

Posted on February 21, 2013 at 12:00amI fell off of a ski lift when I was about 14 years old and I can attest, it’s not fun. I didn’t fall from nearly as high as this kid did. I hope he’s OK. My accident was partially my fault, and partially the fault of the chair operator. I was standing there waiting for the chair to turn the corner and reach me and wasn’t quite in the right position. The chair came around, but I wasn’t firmly in my seat and slipped out almost right after my feet left the ground. I held on while the chair kept going up and up and up. I could hear people screaming “STOP THE LIFT!” but the chair kept moving. Realizing I would be screwed if I waited too long, I let go and fell about 20 feet into a snow bank. I wasn’t hurt at all, but a guy from the ski patrol who happened to be nearby came flying to me and was insistent that I remain on the ground until he could check me out a little.
After that, I spent the rest of the day skiing and had an awesome story to tell!! (:^||)

Snow has to be banned all over the planet because when it melts people drown you see!
And if they cannot ban snow they should ban winter it causes snow just ask the north East! and ban the summer because it causes heat waves and spring because it makes things grow.
The final solution just ban the universe all problems solved :) :)

Unlikely anyone would know what pole they were on and the height of the poles. Probably this is some stunt for a video.
“He hung from about Pole 8 to 21, and at 21 he fell,” the description reads. “This was on a lift that averages 37ft above the ground, But pole 21 was the 3rd highest [stretch] at about 45ft high, 19 being the highest.”

Posted on February 21, 2013 at 5:48amI ski a lot and when I ride with young people they rarely put the bar down until I ask them to. Like, bars are for wooses. Duh! When we load the chair I’ll wait a minute or so just to see before I ask.
They (and here I really mean only SOME of them) also ski too fast, beyond their ability level, and those who are good skiers often take unnecessary chances, like skiing in packs, skiing too fast on beginner and intermediate slopes, getting too close to other skiers, taking blind jumps, poaching and skiing out of bounds, leaning way out of the chairs to slap sticers on the lift towers, etc, etc. Every now and then one would get out of control and hit a tree and code on the mountain or in the aid room or a couple would get lost on the back side and we would have to organize and coordinate a search with the warden service when they turned up missing after the lifts closed, after dark. I used to be a patroller at Sugarloaf, ME and saw all kinds of stupid things they did on a regular basis.
Now that I don’t patrol any more, I only ski on weekdays when school is in session and stay away on “college weeks”. Few young people around except for groups and ski teams and a few kids on vacation with their parents. Problem solved, for old farts like me, anyway.

Posted on February 21, 2013 at 8:56amThe bar is not necessary…. When you grow a little older it help to keep your legs moving a bit. The bar usually has a place for the feet that would stop any keep warm movement in the lower legs. Still if you share a chair you just have to suck it up sometimes.
Still the bar is a choice not a “regulation”
