Gay Mormon Comes Out to His Friends and Family Over 1 Year Period — and Captures Their Reactions in This Video Montage
Shock is a common reaction when people find out that their friends and family members are gay. And often times, the “coming out” process has as many surprises for the person giving the news as it does for those receiving it. Jimmy Hales, a gay student at Brigham Young University, learned this all-too-well when he filmed his year-long experience announcing his sexuality to each and every loved one.

In the video montage’s description on YouTube, Hames, a Mormon, explains why he decided to let people know the giant secret he had been hiding from everyone, including himself.
“Studying at BYU as a closet gay Mormon has been quite an experience. I finally decided to come out and stop living a lie,” he explained. “I’m still, and will forever be, a faithful Mormon, so it looks like I’m not going to marry and therefore live a single life through this mortal existence. Sucks.”
The reactions in the clip range from surprised to expectant (i.e. “I’ve had my suspicions before.”). Watch the video in its entirety, below:
Considering that his faith is important to him, the young man has taken a pledge to avoid acting upon his sexual preference. Rather than entering into a same-sex relationship, he’s intent on sticking with Mormon teaching (which doesn’t embrace practicing a gay lifestyle).
On his blog, Hales gives an extensive explanation of how he came to accept that he’s gay, while also doubling down on his belief that the Mormon faith is rooted in truth. Here’s how he described first acknowledging his same-sex attraction:
Sometime during Winter semester 2012.
Tithing settlement.
“So, are you dating anyone.”
“Nope.” I shamelessly replied.
“Well that’s not good.” my bishop said.
“I don’t want to date anyone.” Then my bishop looked at me,
“Do you experience feelings of same-gender attraction?” What?! All I said is I don’t want to date anyone, how does he…? ’This is real. Oh gosh, this is very real.’ I paused a good while. I looked at my bishop and in a weak voice replied,
“Yeah.” I had never wanted to die more than that moment. Finally realizing the fact. Affirming the fact. Loathing the fact. Breaking through the denial was almost more than I could take. A few words were exchanged and then my bishop looked at me and with genuine empathy said,
“That sucks.”

Posted on February 20, 2013 at 10:38pmI really don’t get it with Gays. Maybe they don’t get it from us a regular hetero types. We as parents love our children, regardless of which persusian you drift to in describing yourself. But please; Every parent has a profound ingrained expectation that their offspring will meet and accept a spouse and create God willing for a genetic extension of themselves to perpetuate the family name. Another link in the chain, so to speak. When an offspring says he is gay. It breaks that forever link in the normal expectation of the parent. Nothing offensive please, gays.
Every daughter when they leave school and post secondary school has “expectations” of continuing the species of family. I think most female persons when in their late 20′s get the hint of “so did you meet anyone yet”. It’s the forever longing of family extensions. It’s not meant to be offensive. It might come out insensitive sometimes. But’s its the expectation of continuation of the family. Two Bob’s or Two Sally’s down add up in expectation of the traditional family unit. One of which has been in place for thousands of years.

Posted on February 21, 2013 at 4:23amSorry Roscoe, but every child deserves a Mom & Dad over politically correct agendas laid out by Hollywood and Progressive society. I’m not saying every traditionally family unit is perfect but thousands of generations ago the human plan was set in place where parenting was most successful with a Male father figure, and a female Mother figure. yes, there are screw up parents out there making a bad name for themselves as parents. But if you look at “family” from a thousand thousand generations ago. Alternative lifestyle humanity wasn’t a good choice of procreating future generations of little boys and girls.
If Darwinism well described by these progressives is true, then how come humans didn’t evolve like worms where male is female or female is male, and each one can create babies and no need to deviate using fancy terms like Gay.
Abnormal humans are the LGBT, without a doubt, and no politically correct person can deny what they aren’t as normal as the thousands of generations of family members preceeding them in their family tree.
So why shouldn’t a father or mother be startled to find their offspring claiming to be Gay. It breaks the tie of family generations.

Posted on February 21, 2013 at 7:06am@lessoneleg……I’m gay and don’t get gays. It is not a choice, but I believe we can be born with a predisposition towards it, just like someone can be born with the predispostion to be an alcoholic. I’ve read a lot of ideas and have come to believe that is likely. Some people born with the leaning or predisposition may never act on those depending on their environment and other factors. In my case: I had no brothers, never bonded with other boys my age – got picked on and bullied by other boys – even my cousins, mainly because I was lousy at sports and wanted to read books instead. My dad seemed – and still seems – disappointed in me because I didn’t do the sports and hunting thing and I felt unloved by him – he quit hugging/kissing me when I was around 8 because I was getting too old for it…. my mother was and is till too controlling……. those are all things consvervative studies agree are triggers and common in a lot of people who are gay. And for the record…. I hate being gay. I am not woman trapped in a man’s body, I’m a guy that is attracted to other guys and wish I could marry a woman, have kids, and be normal…. so don’t lump all gay people together. Not all of us want it, not all of us want to legalize gay marriage, etc

Posted on February 21, 2013 at 7:47amI can’t help but think not one person here watched the video. Some of the first lines he says are, “I’m a gay Mormon. That means I’m going to be celibate for life. That sucks!”
This young man not only accepted his sexual orientation – he accepted the sacrifice he’ll have to make to lead a moral life. How many folks here have had premarital sex? How many have been divorced? How many have remarried? All of those are sins – but choosing celibacy? Heck, according to Paul that’s an even better state than marriage if you want to love and know God!
Go back and watch the video. This man’s been dealt a burden that none of us heterosexuals will ever have to face, and he’s dealing with it head-on rather than lying to his friends and family. He should be applauded and encouraged, not insulted and derided.

That had to be one the best, most incredibly honest posts I’ve read. I’m a conservative Christian and we seemingly get hit with “hating gays” stereotype. And that maybe true for some self-righteous people but I want you to know that I will be praying for you. I don’t have all the answers other than I know the God loves you as much as he loves anyone and has a plan for you. It is apparent your desire to do right. That is a sign of a believer. Not someone who never sins but, someone who doesn’t want to. Everyone struggles against our own nature. As the apostle Paul (probably the greatest Christian to ever live) said,
Romans Chp 7: 18-25
18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.
19 For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.
20 Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
21 I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me.
22 For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:
23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.
24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?
25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the la

Posted on February 21, 2013 at 1:28pmWhen you are a Christian parent you expect to have offspring to “inherit” the faith. To “inherit” the Covenant of Moses brought down through generations of Jews to this Jewish Reformer, Jesus of Nazareth, both Son of God and Son of Man. Christians have all been rent asunder by the Middle Eastern roots of Christianity which is essentially a Middle Eastern Suzerain Treaty. A Treaty between a Lord and a Vassal. The Lord in this case, Jesus Christ, promises Everlasting Life to those who Repent of their Sins and Join the Covenant Church and “IF” they continue as Apostle Paul says “to the end” in being loyal to their “Lord” they receive this “crown of Glory.” So, Christians have been for 2,000 very keen on procreating and bringing up “children in the Lord” to “inherit” this grand New TEstament Covenant through “faith in Jesus Christ”.

Posted on February 21, 2013 at 2:40pmThe very idea, purpose (if you will) of sin is to confuse, to lie. Give a little truth, give a lot, if there is any falsehood within it that truth becomes a stumbling block to those learning thereof. Homosexuality is a GRIEVOUS sin, it is DECEPTION! You are not born that way, there is NO predisposition there is only confusion sowed by temptations whispered by unclean spirits. It really IS that simple…and that hard to contend with if you do not recognize the repeated scriptural references to sin, evil spirits tempting, demon possession, etc. These things are not biblical ‘fables’, they are as real today (if not more so) as they were when first taught to the early saints. Sociological environments, families without sound gospel principles, families without both parents present, and today as in the days of Sodom, cultural acceptances of deviance and fetish’s have now even infiltrated the God-fearing homes through ‘public’ school propaganda and evil government social mandates.

Posted on February 21, 2013 at 11:11amHomosexuality is sin, it is an ‘out of control’ grapple with sexual appetites, nothing more or less. Just as it is with ANY sexual deviancy. Born of a ‘misunderstanding’ and indulgence whether in thought or deed or both. Magnified many times by physical and emotional trauma, or great mental stress which has ALWAYS been a tool of Satan. All our struggles are of a ‘mastering our appetites’ nature, bringing the mortal body under subjugation to the spirit. In this day and age we also have to fight an unrighteous government and culture (caused by evil men in government who write wicked laws). Not to make light for the sexual appetite is the most addictive of ALL temptations, even drugs. No sex before marriage, no sex with anyone other than your spouse, INCLUDING yourself. Not so easy is it?

Posted on February 20, 2013 at 10:27pmACCORDING TO MORMONISM:
A Bachelor or Gay Mormon who dies before he married will not go to Hell but will NEVER be allowed to enter into the Highest tier of the Celestial Kingdom where God the Father resides. (still being debated if there is progression/repentance past a certain point in the afterlife)
Rather, the Gay must remain celibate, will enter into the Telestial (lowest) Kingdom or the Terrestrial (middle) Kingdom & become an Angel that Watches.
If any of you have read the Book of Enoch, you know who the Watchers are. This book isn’t canon to Mormonism, but may as well fall in line with it.
The Key into the presence of God the Father is ***Love of God & Family***
ACCORDING TO TRADITIONAL CHRISTIANITY:
HELL
The Key into the presence of God is ***NOTHING***
No seriously…you don’t have to do a damn thing with yourself.
In both Mormonism & Christianity, Salvation is guaranteed by Jesus Christ. You don’t have to do a damn thing, it’s all God…but Mormons actually believe Exaltation (self-improvement) is essential for any sort of QUALITY AFTERLIFE.
Being Alive isn’t reason enough to be happy apparently.

In Titus Chapter 3: 5 alone it would seem that grace is sufficient if read alone. However if you continue to read verses 6-8 with emphasis upon 8, then you would see the admonishment to not forget works with that grace given to you. Also Titus 3: 14 again reestablishes in a short amount of verses that priciple of works once again. Wrest the scriptures to your own damnation, but also read within context and harmony with other scriptual truths.

The verses you quoted are about EVERYONE who REJECTS the knowledge of God, and living a homosexual lifestyle is just one of the many results of that rejection. The man in this story explicitly says he accepts God and so will remain in the Church and not live a homosexual lifestyle.
Do you see the difference between being born with a same-sex attraction and living a gay lifestyle? Or do you think humans are fallen in a thousand different ways, but they can’t be fallen like “that”?

“Do you see the difference between being born with a same-sex attraction and living a [homosex] lifestyle?”
Sure do, and I commend this guy for his commitment and got no problem with him.
There’s not yet any GENETIC evidence for “orientation” so “born with” and “attraction” are still “moot” in the OLD sense of “debatable” points. He may or may not be “responsible” in the sense of “to blame” for his “same-sex attraction”. He IS, however, as you imply in your rebuttal to Smoot, ACCOUNTABLE for his BEHAVIOR. As long as he remains celibate and does not ACT on his “attraction” he is no more to be blamed than a man who has an attraction for a woman not his wife and doesn’t act on it. Both might be guilty of “lust” AS “adultery” in Jesus’ terms, but they fight the same battle not to give into lust and receive the same forgiveness.

My point was that he took the chapter out of context by omitting relevant verses. For example…
“18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.”
“21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles. 24 Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another.”
God didnt give them up because of sex but because they chose to forget God. The sex (and the many other things listed) were the result. Be careful what you wish for because you may get it.

If you read the verses again you will see that GOD is not talking “about everyone who rejects the knowledge of God” as you put it. He is specifically talking about sexual sin in most of the quote.
Also, no one is “born with same-sex attraction” they make a conscious and EVIL decision to defile the mind and body God has given them. That is why it should be taken away from them.

Some DNA research was halted because people foresaw a future where couples could do a simple test, then aborted babies with the “gay gene”.
In fact, there have been several studies from different sociological angles, and there is evidence that a woman who has several sons will produce more female hormones each time, and the later boys are swimming in more than their older siblings.
There are also other studies…

You just rejected the word of God right in front of you. It plainly says that God abandoned people who rejected knowledge of Him, then they fell into all sorts of sin.
And you don’t understand what you’re talking about regarding being born gay. People are born alcoholics, but they don’t have to drink. The fact that they were born alcoholic, and can admit to being alcoholic, doesn’t condemn them to Hell. It’s just one of the many expressions of the Fall of Man.
This guy accepts Christ, but he admits he was born with a different expression of the Fall of Man, that is, being born gay. The fact that you cannot accept this one type of brokenness is YOUR problem.

It’s an obstacle to overcome. I think my friend Jon had it right some people are born with a homosexual attraction but to act on those desires is a sin. It’s an obstacle to overcome just like for heterosexuals it’s pornography and the like.

Posted on February 21, 2013 at 3:01pm@ADVECTION – You are dishonest and trying to quote scripture with selfish, predetermined thoughts without relying on the gift of the Holy Spirit to guide you in your learning. Homosexuality IS sin, therefore it IS an abomination before the Lord, going against the very nature of man. You cannot be born with temptation, that comes through development and understanding of right and wrong and then being deceived! Sociological abnormalities have always weakened those growing up and maturing within such an environment. That is where the devil and his angels have always first struck any living soul, through their weaknesses. It’s not that hard to understand or see the logic within if you are not closed-minded to an agenda based on selfish, form-fitting beliefs or an ideology.

You are seriously wrong friend, born with weakness we are (each one of us specific to what our Lord knows we need to overcome and triumph over in mortality). Born with specific sin attached to us…WRONG! We are not born alcoholics either, if you recognize we live in a wicked, ever-increasingly evil world then it benefits you to not just believe what comes from scientists or so-called ‘academics’, to not blindly support an unrighteous government or by default police force. Your blindness is dangerous to yourself and possibly others in the long run. Meek we are counseled to be, not weak (minded).
The times are perilous, gird your loins, take heart, and know the “Great and Terrible Day of the Lord” is nigh, we are warned when men call evil good and good evil (as it is NOW) that our Lord is not far off. Great for the saints, terrible for the wicked of heart. Thoughts precede actions and we are accountable just as much for our thoughts.

Posted on February 21, 2013 at 4:15pmRoscoe, someone quotes a small section of a book that is based on Salvation and love, which includes tough love, and you complain that this one message doesn’t say anything about love? Perhaps that’s what the other 774,000 words are for. Or maybe you’re simply blind. Maybe you just don’t see the love associated with a warning message.
You’re the type of person who would allow himself to burn in a house fire because the firemen are screaming at you to get out instead of saying, “Sir, would you please leave your residence. We don’t want to see you perish because we really care for you as the person you are and don’t want to see you come to any harm and the further you delay, the greater the risk of harm there is. And if you get hurt your friends and family will no longer have you around to be blessed by your presence and the community will suffer a great loss…” and so on and so on.
Sometimes, “GTFO” or some other in your face message is the best way to get the point across and it takes love to do it. A lack of love is to simply turn ones back on others and not invest any interest in them or their health. Spiritual or otherwise.

I know of that theory. Still not sure if you can code for something that complicated. What I see in the animals world of studies gives lie to how much instinct their truly is.
Studies of tigers show they will hunt in groups if need be. A tiger is not programmed to hunt solo by instinct. Killer whales learn what to eat from their pod. They are not programmed to eat seals, sea otters, or fish. If killer whales could get enough krill & the stomach to brain feedback loop circuity lit up. They could eat kill and ignore fish or seals. Different pods prey on different species. You can teach dogs to eat veggies and maybe veggies solely.
There is a study that shows homosexual activity goes up during economic downturns. There may be homosexuals who are born that way. Key word is may. But many others are made that way irrespective of genetics. How many Bacha Bazi boys grow up to be messed up because of their upbringing among filthy men?

As Jesus noted (Matthew 7) “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.”
and even many of those who count themselves as righteous will be in for an unfortunate surprise (also Matthew 7)…
“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’ ”
Even some of those who work miracles will be found wanting.

Posted on February 21, 2013 at 5:05pmWhy is this a story? Perhaps because progressives are forcing the issue?
You can’t watch half of TV without some sort of homosexual theme being presented. As you say, only a small percentage of the population is gay, so why is there so much of it in the media. Unlike the (truly) conservative stories about homosexuality, the progressive agenda is pressing the homosexuality-is-normal as bread an water and should not only be tolerated but celebrated no matter what the context.
This story affirms that homosexuality is bad if acted upon but a person “afflicted” with such temptations can put it behind them and live a righteous life just as someone with a predilection for alcoholism can willingly put alcohol behind them and lead a good life.
This story is the exception. That’s what makes it worth reporting.
What makes it funny is those who keep calling it a non-story yet keep commenting on it. It almost makes me suspect them of being one of those progressives who want to bury the truth. “We can’t be having people believe that a person who sees themselves as gay not embracing the gay lifestyle.”
I know when I see a story as a non-issue, I either don’t click on it or stop reading it half way through. I definitely don’t take the time to comment on it.
If the story is such a non-issue, why did you waste your time on it?

Posted on February 20, 2013 at 9:19pmGay Christian? Talk about an oxymoron… Being Christian is about conducting oneself in the manner that Christ has taught all of us, not saying we believe in Christ and attending some church every week. Homosexuality is clearly condemned by God in the scriptures. That doesn’t mean that Christians (including Mormons) “hate” people who are gay. It’s the lifestyle and the act of giving into those temptations that we condemn. We love the person regardless, just as God loves them regardless. We’ll invite them to church every day of our lives and continue to offer support for them to follow Christ’s footsteps. We all have demons to overcome. For some people it’s same-gender attraction. Christians support one another as we all strive to become better people and discipline ourselves little by little to live the commandments better and better each day.
God loves all of His children. Even the most evil of us. It’s our actions and choices that are contrary to His commandments that He hates. The only thing He can do is show us the path we need to follow in order to find true happiness in the eternities. If we don’t follow that path He’s bound by law to judge us for our actions and choices. In actuality we’ll end up judging ourselves. Once we see things as God sees them we’ll realize our bad choices and see how we didn’t prepare ourselves for the next life by living the commandments He had given us.

I think that you understand the difference between being born with a homosexual proclivity, and choosing to live a gay lifestyle. One is a result of the Fall, and the other is an act of will.
This fellow seems to simply be admitting that he was born with a homosexual attraction, but he believes in Jesus and will be a “eunuch” for the Kingdom. In that sense, he’s a homosexual Christian. Just like there are many alcoholic Christians who choose to abstain from alcohol.

Yes, abstaining from alcohol is much different than abstaining from marriage. Jesus said that some choose a life of celibacy for the sake of the Kingdom, and let those who can accept that accept it.
And if gay isn’t God’s plan, then God didnt make him gay. There was a “fall,” and apparently same-sex attraction is one of the thousands of ways we humans fall short. God hasn’t created a human since Eve. We were all procreated.
Regarding the original sin, I guess you’re saying its unjust to punish us for Adam’s sin? Try this on for size. It was within God’s rights to kill Adam on the spot, and there wouldn’t be any us. But God showed mercy, and the suffering humans endure isn’t commensurate to the rewards ahead.
And where were you when the Universe was formed? I ask because that’s God’s question to people who try to judge Him. The truth is, we can’t judge a Supreme Being.

Posted on February 20, 2013 at 8:39pmAgain why is this news, behind closed doors is their own business. As usual they shove it in your face to get the reaction that they want. Why else record it.

Posted on February 20, 2013 at 8:46pmNever knew this existed…until now…on the Blaze….a Conservative site. Seems like Conservatives are helping out with the so-called shoving in your face nonsense.

Posted on February 20, 2013 at 9:03pmSexuality is a personal matter, but if someone wants to tell their family and close friends they’re gay, what’s that to you?
The fact that he recorded their responses, is also his business, and from the quality of the production, I’d say this guy makes a lot of videos, so it was probably natural for him.
And if you didn’t want to see their reactions, then you didn’t have to click on the news link. It’s actually kind of funny that anyone would take the time to follow the link (presumably watch the video), then complain that it was “shoved” in their face. :P

Posted on February 20, 2013 at 8:37pmHow is this pertinent news? What is the big deal between Conservatives and gays? It seems like Conservatives are the ones touting the so-called Gay Agenda and not the gays ramming their lifestyle down your throat. It’s you people doing it!!
