Have Any More Gun Makers Stopped Selling To Anti-Gun States? (Hint: Yeah, Lots More)

Last Friday TheBlaze reported on a growing list of gun manufacturers and retailers who had stopped selling to law enforcement in states that were enacting stringent new gun laws.

Since that report, the initial list (seen below) has changed. However, none of the “big three” (Glock, Sig Sauer, Smith & Wesson) providers to law enforcement have stepped up and joined the companies who have chosen to take a public stand on the issue. In less than two weeks, at least 18 companies have made the decision to stop selling to law enforcement in states that limit a private citizen’s right to own a gun.

There is one arms maker that has gotten attention for publicly stating that they will not be pressured into stopping sales to law enforcement. That company is ArmaLite.

more gun makers stop selling to states that restrict private gun ownership

According to posts on several gun-supporting blog sites, Armalite answered email inquires with some unwelcome attitude. This is the reply reportedly sent from a sales rep identified as Pat Raley.

Dear concerned gun owner,

First of all I would like to say thank you for filling my email with all this spam email.

Second, I am not sure where you got this blanket email from to send out as spam, but please stop it.

Third, The manufacturer is not the one you need to convince.

You need to convince the law enforcement agencies and the common people about their mistake in electing these officials and have them removed. Again NOT the manufacture.

AR Stands for ArmaLite…

Respectfully,

Pat Raley

The snarky tone of that note did not sit well with the very active pro-gun crowd in the blogosphere. It quickly circled the digital universe. Armalite’s President Mark Westrom reportedly tried to do a little damage control and state his company’s policy more clearly.

At first glance, Westrom’s statement seemed to be along the lines of the companies who had chosen to stop selling to police in New York state.

My purpose here is to pass on his (Raley’s) apology from the corporate level and to answer the initial question: What is ArmaLite going to do?

ArmaLite is continuing a policy put into place when California first banned our rifles. That policy remains:

1. We will not sell to those states which deny it’s honorable citizens the right to own ArmaLite’s.

That statement seems clear. It was the next couple of points that muddied the waters a bit (emphasis added by Armalite):

2. We do not halt sales to individual officers even in problematic states. I am a former Police Officer myself, and the staffer who stimulated the recent anger is a currently serving one. We are well familiar with the fact that most rifles serving Police Officers are purchased by the officers themselves, and that they shouldn’t be punished for the actions of their political elite.
We consider sales to those sate subdivisions which are not engaged or potentially engaged with disarming its citizens. DNR and Forestry Departments, for instance, sometimes serve in remote areas that conceal drug farms and their officers deserve good hardware.

3. We will not sell to those lower political subdivisions that deny their honorable citizens the right to own ArmaLite’s. Chicago, for instance, prohibits its citizens from owning ArmaLite’s within the city limits so we make no effort to sell into that city. We have many friends on the Chicago Police Department and have continued to sell to them individually.

Westrom appears to be saying that they won’t sell to police departments in states where the Second Amendment is being infringed, but will sell to individual officers in those states.

We reached out to the company for comment and have not yet gotten a response. Mark Westrom’s voicemail seems to have been disabled or overwhelmed. Perhaps there is a connection there.

No matter what ArmaLite’s stance may be, there are many new additions to our initial list published late last week.. Joining the expanding group are:

Bullwater, which does business as A&T Firearms, posted a statement on Facebook

Our small company, Bullwater Enterprises LLC dba A & T Firearms out of Sylvania, Georgia is also joining these companies in refusing to do business with any state that is trampling the constitution and Bill of Rights of their citizens. We will not sell anything to any governmental agency, their contractors or employees. We will sell all lawful items to all other citizens of those states. Andrew & Tracy Orphanoudakis.

West Fork Armory also chose the social media outlet for making a statement, and did so with a very clear graphic atop their post.

Image: Facebook

Their message:

EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY! All New York Government and official purchases from New York Law Enforcement agencies within that state are cancelled. All future sales will be suspended and firearm servicing is halted until your current bans further restricting law abiding citizens is lifted.

West Fork also named a couple of other states besides New York, while encouraging other companies to join them:

California you’re already on the list, and Colorado your borderline on the list. We suggest all other manufacturers and dealers do the same.

Arizona’s Smith Enterprise posted a letter to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo on its website. It shared some of the same sentiments as those who had joined the protest:

Until your state changes your gun control laws and ensures these laws are back in line with the 2nd Amendment of the United States Constitution, Smith Enterprise will be forced to keep this policy.

At a time when crime is rampant and people are becoming more and more desperate due to the struggling economy, it is imperative that state and local governments support the people’s right to defend themselves from would-be attackers. The police have nothing to fear from law-abiding citizens with guns.

When you change your gun laws back to something more along the lines of what our country was founded on, please let me know and we will reopen our sales in your state to government agencies.

Alex Arms is a firearms dealer, and on Sunday, they posted their new policy:

Alex Arms & Instruction has decided to adopt, as policy, that we will not sell firearms and accessories to any state or governmental agency in any state that prohibits the possession or use of said item by its citizens.

Curiously, Alex Arms has used the company’s website to take a shot at one of their suppliers, Armalite. In a post from Monday, Alex Arms accused Armalite of “having no backbone.” Going forward, Armalite products will not be stocked by Alex Arms until they change their policy.

You either support the Second Amendment, or you do not.  Armalite apparently does not.  They have drawn their line in the sand and have decided to stand on the side of tyranny instead of We, The People.

Spike’s Tactical from Florida stated their policy on Facebook too:

In light of the recent and numerous anti-gun and anti-2nd Amendment laws pending across the Nation, Spike’s Tactical will be joining other manufacturers and distributors and limiting the business we do in states that have limited the right to keep and bear arms for their citizens.

Idaho’s Quality Arms, an AR-15 specialist, has added a page to their company’s website titled “Liberty & Justice for All.” On that page is a lengthy statement on the latest shootings and how the company feels some politicians are manipulating them for their own purposes. The page closes with this statement from Qaulity Arms:

Quality Arms Idaho

Will not supply any firearm or product, manufactured by us, or any other company nor will we warranty, repair, alter, or modify any firearm owned by any State, County or Municipality who infringes on the right of its citizens to bear arms under the 2ndamendment.

David Saylors of Liberty Suppressors published this statement:

We at Liberty Suppressors have decided that we will no longer support the government that is oppressing the people that it was elected to represent. As of Feb. 18, 2013 and continuing until these draconian laws are repealed, Liberty Suppressors will not do business with any government entity in the state of New York until these laws are repealed.

Keep your powder dry,
David Saylors
President
Liberty Suppressors

DoubleStar Corp received almost 3,000 Facebook “likes” in the first 24 hours after they made this declaration:

The JTFOC will no longer sell prohibited items to law enforcement agencies or any government agencies in states, counties, cities, and municipalities that have enacted restrictive gun control laws against their law abiding citizens. We hope other companies will join us with their support. We applaud those already involved with this effort to protect our 2nd Amendment rights.

American Spirit Arms notched even more electronic “thumbs up” after joining the movement.

Count us in! American Spirit Arms will stand beside our fellow firearm manufacturers in the fight against new firearm legislation that imposes gun control on law-abiding citizens. As a firearm manufacturer, we are participating in the stance of only selling the firearms that law-abiding citizens can purchase in that state.

Another AR specialist, Trident Armory took a stand on Sunday night:

Sunday night, 9pm. As of this moment, all contract bids and offers, as well as any current production contracts for any and all US government agencies and affiliates by Trident Armory are null and void.

“We will no longer participate with, or work for a government where the “rights” of the people are able to be adjusted by the whim of the government”.” I will not build guns which can be used to disarm my fellow Americans”

David Hunsucker, CEO of Head Down Firearms encouraged other manufacturers to join his company and others:

Head Down would like to announce that the State of New York, any Law Enforcement Departments, Law Enforcement Officers, First Responders within the State of New York, or any New York State government entity or employee of such an entity – will no longer be served as customers. We feel that the passage of this legislation exceeds the authority granted to the government of New York by its citizens, and violates the Constitution of the United States. This announcement is effective today and applies to any and all states that may adopt such laws in the future.

Retailer J&G Sales has a special page dedicated to their position as it concerns sales to law enforcement. Part of the page long statement includes an admission that this decision will cost the company money:

J&G believes that there should not be a difference between the rights of citizens and those of government employees. This new policy will also help us to be sure we avoid the consequences of not conforming with the anti-firearm regulations in these various jurisdictions.

We expect to lose some revenue from government purchases, however we feel it is essential to defend the US Constitution by making a statement about the importance of the Second Amendment in maintaining all our freedoms.

We await the day when all law abiding citizens will be able to possess the most effective means and tools available for self-defense regardless of where they live or for whom they work.

In addition to the growing list of companies taking this action, there is an online coalition working to keep the pressure on manufacturers.

Firearms Policy Coalition offers a digital option for those wishing to send an email encouraging companies to get on board with this movement. And for those who like snail mail, FPC offers a sample letter and a fairly comprehensive list of street addresses.

(H/T to NC Gun Blog for maintaining this list)

Editor’s Note: TheBlaze’s Mike Opelka joined Editor-in-Chief Scott Baker to discuss this story on Thursday’s BlazeCast:

In CONTROL, Glenn Beck presents a passionate, fact-based case for guns that reveals why gun control isn’t really about controlling guns at all; it’s about controlling us. Find out more HERE.

I do not like the answers Armalite is giving in it’s backstroke attempt.
      The pressure needs ramped up.
The one thing that many seem to miss is that each and every one of these proposed and passed gun “laws” exempts retired law enforcement. There need to be immediate challenges based on the premise that you cannot create “special” citizens that are exempt from these laws. Retired police officers are CIVILIANS…..nothing more. Active law enforcement should not get any exemptions on their personally owned weapons as well. I think all of these laws are unconstitutional but I know that the cops are going to be on the side of the moron politicians as long as they are exempt. If police officer’s personally owned weapons and those of retired officers are not exempt, you will soon find them on OUR side.

Online at Bass Pro you cannot buy ammo unless its in the store and they dont ship to certain states…..Sounds like maybe the big corps are trying to squash the smaller gun dealers like CTD……I dont know what is going on, but I just hope the NRA is on top of things…….There is a nation of millions of gun owners that are concerned about this.

Also why is it so important to destroy the Bill of Rights and not to propose a budget??
Also why is it that 800,000 jobs will be lost due to budget cuts, but 11 million illegal job takers is ok??

Spike’s is incredibly popular here in Florida, they make fine mil spec rifles and their logos are appearing more and more luggage and what not the troops here are bringing home. From what I’ve heard Spike’s also machines the majority of their weapon parts in house. We have a rising star in the weapon systems industry here in Florida. But, if you want one get in line as I’ve also heard they have a waiting period of 6 months for non-military purchasers,

The Market Place should pony up and put Beck’s balls where his mouth is and consider selling defense systems and equipment. Heck, even purchase a shop and hire some smiths and manufacture their own weapon systems. I’d by a Blaze 1911 in a heartbeat.

      @RIDE

Horde the ammo you have and only target shoot ammo you find at the range if thy have it.

Even non-defense designed FMJ are better than an empty mag in a pinch. Here in Florida ammo is scarce, and when you do find it you are limited to two boxes and of course the price is jacked.

I’ve spoken to several local shops, both large and small, and all are saying their suppliers can’t get them stock. For them in many cases gun sales are through the roof, but ammo sales are actually down. The government is either playing with the recycled military brass again or buying up all the supply; or worse, both.

Once again…here is the proof that the “uninformed” voters need to see, understand, and accept!

the GOVERNMENT DOES NOT MAKE ANYTHING!

They only attempt to control and manipulate EVERYTHING!

Just like in the area of JOBS….the government does not…and can not create jobs! They can only support (if they choose to) the environment in which jobs can be created!

The government DOES NOT MAKE GUNS…..however, if they choose to, they can support the environment that DOES MAKE GUNS! If they do not support the manufacturers….they will also do without! “live by the sword….die by the sword”!

I don’t think that calling for not making special classes exempt from laws is coming out against police. No class of people should have special rights or exemptions from the law, otherwise that violates our very notion of equality before the law. I’d say that if the government exempted us libertarians from all gun laws, I mean yeah it would be cool and I’d buy an Uzi tomorrow, but it still wouldn’t be right and I’d lobby to have the exemption applied to ALL people.

I was just referring to the comment that police officers will side with the politicians because they get an exemption. Some of us still have morals and ethics and will stand up for what is right. It just seems on every thread someone generalizes police as being bad and out to get the people. We aren’t all like that. More companies should use the same strategy in all areas concerning the elites demands. They act like they have so much power, but if more businesses said no to governments state, local and federal then we’d have a different story on the Blaze to rave about. That is the answer. Unfortunately the government thought ahead and contracted for enough ammo to kill all of us several times over. If they renig on the contract I am sure there are big financial penalties. I doubt the ammo manufacturers would do it. It would certainly be nice though if they would only sell to we the people.

Don’t worry guys. They first have to have enough goons to kill all of us several times over. The American patriots have WAY more ammo than all of the govt stockpiles combined times 100. Do not fret about it. When the time comes, and they send out the creeps, there will be plenty of ammo and guns laying around everywhere after the first few days.

Lt. Colonel Hal Moore: “I think you oughta get yourself an M-16.”

Sergeant Major Basil Plumley: “Sir, if the time comes I need one, there’ll be plenty lying on the ground.”

From the movie: “We Were Soldiers Once”

Pick up the fallen man’s weapon next to you, or pick up one of the fallen enemy’s weapons.

Then create more fallen enemies for more ammo & weapons.

Read about the Russian infantry charges in Stalingrad in WW2. One man had a rifle, another carried 5 rounds. They didn’t run short of rifles or ammo once the charge commenced. Of course, there were usually machinegun emplacements on the Russian side to kill any Russian soldiers that would not charge or tried to run away. Patriots wouldn’t need any machinegun “persuasion”.

Here’s something that worries me a bit. The only way they could possibly win an all-out armed conflict is if they used WMDs like neutron b0mbs and/or chemical weapons on the major population centers in a first-strike. They’d have to do it as a first-strike or at least within 24-48 hours to be effective, as cities would empty quickly in any major collapse and/or sustained disruption of the food/energy supply chain from a conflict.

Actually Blue Strat, watch the TV series “Jericho” sometime. The PTB know that the best way to take out the US IS to go after a set number of population centers and watch the system collapse in the rest. Take out Houston, LA, Denver, Wichita, DC (need to eliminate the political opposition in more or less one fell swoop), St Louis, Seattle, Baltimore, New York and a few other cities and you will have destroyed the bulk of the port capacity, the rail hubs needed to transport food, the communication centers, and a number of other pieces of critical infrastructure. You’ve also eliminated a large number of “useless eaters” at the same time. There is actually a US military contingency scenario on just this thing. I believe it was called “operation Blackjack” While the planners who devised it were looking at it from a minimize damage and defend against viewpoint, the analysis would certainly be useful as a planning tool for implementing it as well. There is a reason why I recommend that anyone looking for a bug out location check prevailing wind patterns and pick a location at least 100 miles down wind or better yet UPWIND of the nearest major city. A ground based nuke attack puts out a lot of fallout (aka irradiated dust), but since it doesn’t reach into the upper atmosphere, the dangerous levels tend to stay within 100 miles of ground zero. Beyond that a little Potassium Iodide should protect you well enough to survive.

This is a smart business move. I have to give these guys credit. Whenever innocent people are slaughtered, and Americans want something done – like sensible gun control – who profits? Gun manufacturers and sellers. Gun sales spike whenever innocent people’s brains are blown out.

And let’s not forget! The people who buy guns legally and then sell them to people who couldn’t pass a background check. How do you think the bad guys get those guns? You know, the bad guys, the terrorists, the drug dealers, the rapists, felons and pedophiles. You think they’re buying guns from overseas? Heck no, felons and terrorists buy guns manufactured in this country! They may be pedophiles and terrorists, but they want and are buying US guns.

So these manufacturers won’t sell guns to cops, but they are fine with arming the felons, murderers, rapists, al-Qaeda members, drug dealers, pedophiles and psychos. Please, don’t even pretend the guns those people are buying aren’t manufactured in the good old US of A. All the blood and brains splattered against the wall and on the street? Most likely that was done with an American made gun.

But heck no, universal background checks would inevitably lead to a dictatorship! And, more importantly, a loss of revenue for gun manufacturers and sellers.

Other than that, they sell to whoever wants their product no matter who or where they are. And they wrote these long winded statements of psychobabble as if they’re on our side.

Meteors meteors meteors. The gun cannot pull the trigger itself. It is the criminal that pulls the trigger. It is the criminal that illegally purchases or steals a gun. It is a criminal that illegally sells a gun to another criminal. Not the manufacturer. Manufacturers have to sell the firearms through licensed dealers. The licensed dealers have to run a background check on the buyer. The Sandy Hook Killer was refused the opportunity to buy a gun just previous to the murders he committed. So what did he do. Well, stole his mother’s guns and killed her so that he could go commit a massacre. What manufacturer sold him a gun?

When that happens, govt. checks aren’t going out. The welfare parasites are going to get damn hungry and do stupid things, like breaking into the homes of gun owners. And they will steal the guns, along with whatever else they can carry away. Besides, the federal government has already been arming violent felons in Mexico. So, quit trying to pin the blame on businessmen whyo are making a profit. Blame the idiots who have started this steep, and getting steeper, downhill slide. Hey sendthemeteors, care to learn a little about the topic of the 22,000 gun laws currently on the books? Attend the Gun Rights Policy Conference in Houston at the end of September. Let me ask you a couple of questions.

Do you know what a straw purchaser is? It’s someone who does exactly what you are talking about when you talk about someone buying a gun legally for the purpose of selling it to someone who can’t pass a background check. It’s highly illegal with substantial penalties, IF the DoJ bothers to actually prosecute the offender. Just recently one of the straw purchasers from the Fast and Furious debacle agreed to a plea deal that landed him less than 5 years despite running dozens of guns to the Mexican cartels. The bottom line isn’t that we need more laws, we need enforcement of the current ones. No one wants people selling guns to dangerous criminals, but doing that knowingly is already illegal. Exactly how much more illegal can another law make a felony that has penalties that include multiple years in jail? The guy who sold the Tec 9 that Klebold and Harris used at Columbine got 3 years in prison for selling a handgun to someone under 21. These laws have been on the books for over 40 years.

Go back and do your research before showing off how little that you understand the grand plan.

Once again SME lies. The reason sales spike is because people are afraid that Democrat politicians will make yet another try at a gun ban.

It is that simple. The sales don’t spike because people are wanting to blow someone’s brains out.

In a previous life SME banned owning of swords by peasants in Japan.

Is it strange that I have a little respect for Meteors? He /she is at least passionate and trying to debate us and make points, unlike say Encinom who just hops on and throws inflammatory comments around before disappearing and never responding. I think Meteors is absurdly wrong and blatantly trying to appeal through emotions rather than logic, but at least he/she tries and doesn’t come off as someone just rage posting.

Still, thepost was very wrong. Gun manufacturers generally don’t sell to criminals. For instance I can’t think of any manufacturer that lobbies against the ban on say, convicted felons buying firearms. Even from a purely self motivated standpoint, manufacturers know that the more gun crimes are committed, especially the really heinous emotion wrecking ones such as school shootings, the more likely we are to see gun control legislation being passed, which would severely hurt their bottom line. It is in the manufacturers interest not to be secretly selling guns to cartels and terrorists, as you claim.

I’m pretty sure the big guys will duck their heads and try not to take a hard stand. They make too much money off federal and state police and military contracts to be seen as taking a side against the government. On the flip side, gun owners are one of the few groups that are very good at punishing/rewarding businesses for their actions. The big guys certainly don’t want to come across as pro gun control in any way shape or form or they will lose serious money in the civilian market. I hope these small and medium sized manufacturers standing up are rewarded for their bravery though. I’ll certainly take note of the names on the list and will be more apt to check them out.

I don’t think any of them realize the amount of power they hold in this debate. I encourage folks to seek out these companies and ask them to stop selling, supplying and servicing any local, state and federal agency (military and law enforcement). These agencies cannot function without weapons and ammunition! Gun, ammo, “gear” makers are our last line of defense in this debate they can literally shut it down for everyone if they wanted to!!! THis means far less than you think…though I appreciate the sentiments these companies have, only a few of those listed are manufacturers…the rest are 3rd party retailers and companies who make accessories. All of them are charging ridiculous prices for their goods now, due to supply and demand…which is good…that is how it is meant to work.

But most of these comanies right now have nothing to sell even if they were inclined to do so, and if they were so inclined, most would not but at these highly inflated prices.

I know some patrol officers at LAPD and they do have to buy their own tactical semi-auto shotguns. The regular pump shotguns and their sidearms are LAPD issue. However patrol cops who are selected and qualify, get M16 rifles that are US government surplus. LAPD gets them for free.

Now if the ammo suppliers would take this stance, I might be able to find ammo easier – and cheaper. I’d surely throw more patronage their way than these gun manufacturers. I invariable expend more ammo than buying more guns. Don’t we all?

Don’t sell ammo to the Federal Gov, or State Govs trampling on our right to “Bear Arms”.

Start contacting them. I would imagine Hornaday would get on board seeing as their CEO is on the NRA board of directors. Sic Uncle Ted and Gunny Ermey on him (scary in and of itself)! Black Hills ammo and the others. Don’t think UMC or Remington will but Hornaday supplies them with a lot of bullets.

I have contacted Glock, Smith & Wesson, Remington, Ruger and Mossberg. So far no response that really means anything, and that came from Smith. However, I urge all Blaze readers to do the same.

Until the big boys you mention follow suit and step up to the plate these boycotts mean nothing. We need to get the media to report on the issue, which probably won’t happen, but companies like Smith and Wesson should definitely draw attention.

Just keep the guns loaded, and the ammo dry.

It’s a good move, and, gun manufacturers can certainly afford to do it – guns are sold years in advance at this point – they can afford to be choosey.
