In a desperate attempt to save 1,173 French jobs at a failing Goodyear tire plant, French Industry Minister Arnaud Montebourg approached Titan International Inc. Chairman and former Republican presidential hopeful Maurice Taylor to see if the American CEO would be interested in purchasing the factory.
And like most things American, Taylor’s response to Montebourg was blunt and to the point: “Do you think we’re stupid?”
No, really, in a letter published Wednesday by Les Echos, Taylor — whose bearish negotiating style earned him the the nickname “The Grizz” — had nothing but criticism for France’s work ethic.
“I have visited that factory a couple of times. The French workforce gets paid high wages but work only three hours,” the turnaround artist said in a letter dated Feb 8.
“They get one hour for breaks and lunch, talk for three and work for three. I told the French union workers to their faces. They told me that’s the French way!” he added.
Goodyear announced in January its intention to shutter the plant after five years of negotiating with the Communist-backed CGT, France’s largest union, failed to produce results.
“Sir, your letter states that you want Titan to start a discussion. How stupid do you think we are? Titan is the one with the money and the talent to produce tires. What does the crazy union have? It has the French government,” Taylor said.
“Titan is going to buy a Chinese tire company or an Indian one, pay less than one Euro per hour wage and ship all the tires France needs,” he added. “You can keep the so-called workers.”
Shortly after Les Echos published the letter, the CGT union responded angrily to the American CEO, saying the “insulting” letter showed Taylor to be more of a “lunatic” than a person suitable “to hold the reins of a multinational,” according to the Financial Times.
It’s worth noting that the CGT fought against the idea of a Titan takeover from day one.
“He says that the union is crazy, the government is sh– and that [President Barack] Obama is a joke and he is going to produce in China . . . What he’s said today is not the way to break into [the European market],” said CGT official Mickaël Wamen.
Here’s Taylor’s complete letter:
Wow. Just wow.

Feb. 20, 2013 at 2:52pmHe is right and it is in the U.S. to. You know do you think by them putting gas high and not letting us drill or frack in our country that we can’t afford to go to work or even have work to go to. the unions go. so they will put people over the work places like in camps at 25 cents an hour or day and tell you you don’t need to drive to work.while they take property, cars, food away cause your universal registrations on anything, could lead to your health of your mind that they can say is unfit. and put you away at anytime. Why did’nt I work for the goverment so long ago to be set for life. I could have retired bought property and boats and jewelrey that they got from the ((CRIMiNAL)) I was in the wrong business who is the criminal anymore?? Feb. 20, 2013 at 5:48pmI bet if you go out to the parking lot and check all 1,173 employees cars you will find they bought cheaper and better tires made in Japan without all those union fees slapped on. When the GM plant was open in Oklahoma City you could look in the parking lot and there was more Fords and Toyotos there than GM models. That plant was closed in 2006 because the Union refused to go with the national. The plant is still owned by GM and about 100 union stewards go there 5 days a week to do – who knows what.

Ooo la la!
The French are in a tizzy over this one!
All the more so because they have no real response.
Some examples of attempted replies: “Michelin is ten times bigger than your puny company” and “We are going to closely surveille all Titan shipments coming through customs.”
And you gotta love the French worker. Once they feel the cushiness of lifetime-garanteed employment with benefits, they quickly justify their cushy conditions by convincing themselves that they are indispensable– and so they most certainly deserve everything they get. This is true whether they are unionized or not, whether they are in the public or private sector, or something in between.
And by the way, we are missing the details of their approach to Taylor– which, knowing the French, was sufficiently arrogant to merit an scathingly honest answer from him.

Feb. 20, 2013 at 2:39pmA smart CEO…
Guess he just lost his invite from Obama’s next jobs summit… :-)
He’s right, and my Father just spent some time working in France and Germany about 3 months ago and spent two weeks there… He said things in their economy are all bad things they brought on themselves…
He said the same thing, by noon, the people are done working, and spend the rest of the day drinking coffee or wine, and doing ANYTHING but work… My Father is a pretty wise business man who oversee’s MANY large corporation factories, and he said it is amazing that those plants stay open for more than a week the way they waste money paying employee’s NOT to work…
Let France fail… Anyone NOT willing to work for their needs, doesn’t deserve the goods they claim to need. And when the goods run dry, and the freebies run out, MAYBE the french people will put down their glasses and get back to work…
He said Germany was somewhat similar, but NO WHERE near as bad….

We would give a guess to see who could come the closest to how many were sitting down and talking or napping. This goes on all over America with frigging Union bastards. 20 miles away another bridge larger and was curved was done in 8.5 months. These guys worked and was worth their salt. I never found out if they were Unuion or not But they worked and earned their money. USA needs to weed these lazy bastards out and give jobs to those that will work 8 hrs and stop crying about benefits. Good thing Im not their Boss you would see a big change

Times have changed since the 50′s-60′s and a CEO then is nowhere near the job of a CEO now. CEO’s may be paid more but they are required to do more. The smaller the company, the more ‘work’ style work they do. The larger the company, the more networking they must do. A modern CEO of a Fortune 100 company spends all day in meetings and schmoozing to keep the corporate wheels greased. We might not consider it ‘work’ but it really is and if anything goes wrong, they get canned. So Ghost is correct.
We may not agree with how much they are paid but apparently the company does and feels they are worth it. Standard economics will not allow a company to over compensate employees without paying some kind of price. Remember all the .Com failures in the late 90′s? They paid a price.

Feb. 20, 2013 at 2:27pmWith mechanical automation all that will be left are professional jobs, service jobs and some technical/ repair type jobs.
You could have more people than jobs. A person could suggest people buy stakes in factories but the liberals will say the problem is stake blowing. Their solution it seems to be to encourage Zero or negative population growth and homosexuality. Homosexuals do not even realize that they were nudged. Apparently it is panem et circuses for them.
Of course many liberals at the top tier will not comply with ZPG and will make sure to sue their influence to get their kids the best education to compete for professional jobs or just give it to them.

Feb. 20, 2013 at 2:09pmThe French Labor Law is abhorrent. There are so many hoops that you have to jump through to get rid of a worker that you might as well just shut business entirely rather than fire someone. Doing business in France is an apparent nightmare. Any company that wants to do business inside of France and in line with French laws is just asking for years of headache, heartache, and financial loss. Bobo the Wonder Marxist desires to make the United States the same way.
