Campus Rape Victim Says Gun-Free Zones Empower Criminals, Defends Concealed Carry

Colorado state Rep. Joe Salazar created a firestorm with his recent comments about woman and guns.   During a debate last week, he argued that allowing firearms on college campuses won’t make people safer — but his words raised some eyebrows, particularly when he discussed the issue of rape. Salazar subsequently caught the ire of victims who found his views overtly offensive.

On Wednesday, NRA News host Cam Edwards spoke with Amanda Collins, a woman who was violently raped in 2007 at the University of Nevada. Aside from lambasting Salazar’s statements, she defended concealed carry and proclaimed that a gun would have stopped her attacker.

Before we get into her response, let’s take a quick look back at the politician’s controversial arguments, which were made last Friday during a gun debate and hearing in his state. Salazar said:

It’s why we have call boxes, it’s why we have safe zones, it’s why we have the whistles. Because you just don’t know who you’re gonna be shooting at. And you don’t know if you feel like you’re gonna be raped, or if you feel like someone’s been following you around or if you feel like you’re in trouble and when you may actually not be, that you pop out that gun and you pop — pop a round at somebody?”

During the NRA interview, Collins, a 27-year-old wife and mother, noted that her own story contradicts many of the claims made by Salazar. She also expressed a more general frustration with politicians’ continued claims that, in her view, aren’t based on practical terms.

“It is so frustrating, because — and I wish that I could sit down with each one of these policy makers and just have a face-to-face conversation with them and tell them my story,” she said.

Collins dismissed emergency call boxes, whistles and safe zones as giving a “false sense of security.” She also said that her university didn’t have the boxes, anyway, leaving her with few resources to prevent or report the attack. However, even if these elements were in place, the young woman said that they would have been of little assistance.

“A call box above my head while I was straddled on the parking garage floor being brutally raped wouldn’t have helped me one bit,” she proclaimed. “The safe zone? Well, I was in a safe zone and my attacker didn’t care.”

As far as gun-free zones go, Collins believes they do little more than tell perpetrators they will be unmatched if and when they do decide to act out with violence. After taking issue with his arguments, Collins also tackled Salazar’s framing of women.

“The comments that he made…about women not knowing if they’re going to be raped or accidentally shooting the wrong person [were] extremely offensive, because he specifically targeted female students,” she continued. “So is he saying that all women are unable to make sound decisions in the midst of that? That we would go against our God-given instinct that something is wrong?”

In her own experience, Collins said she knew something was wrong the moment her attacker grabbed her from behind. Tragically, she was raped at gun point, in a gun-free zone, less than 100 feet away from campus authorities. The assailant went on to assault two other women and to kill a third.

“Had I been carrying that night, two other rapes would have been prevented and a young life would have been saved,” Collins said, defending students’ right to carry weapons on campus.

While the young woman had a licence to carry, it was illegal for her to have a gun on campus.

Listen to Collins respond to Salazar and share her experience, below:

The desire and drive for some politicians to take away freedoms from the law-abiding as if the latter were children is so often astounding. Then again, a majority of voters put them in office so who is truly to blame?

His comments (the Democrat rep) are not overtly offensive, they are blatently offensive! And the liberals defending them should all be deported. Last night on a blog a liberal MAN went off on me on how to best defend myself from rape. My head almost exploded. Tell mister MAN how to protect my body. But don’t worry he supported my right to have an abortion after I would be attacked, but not my right to defend myself from an attack. AHHHHHH

With very little statistical analysis, you will discover that the majority of rapists are left of center, thus vote democrat.

It is their right to do as such, and who are we to think that we should allow our women to protect themselves.

Obama and the dems are screwing the nation over, so why not let the liberal rapists screw who they deem necessary?

The call box? It could be just a foot away and won’t be of any use when the assailant already has you pinned preventing you reaching it. You’d have to get away first.

Safe zones or gun-free zones? The rapist had a gun, HE DIDN’T CARE!

Whistles? Not much use if you’re already gagged or if you can’t reach it.

Ware are the women rights groups?

Women have the right of abortion, they also have the right to fight on the front lines in war using 45 cal. hand guns, AR-16 automatics, and the 50 cal. Ma-Duce and any other gun to kill in war, but when they leave the service all of a sudden they are not smart enough to use an AR-15 semi-automatic to save their own life.

Joe Salazar can’t help it because his statement ticked off some folks. After he is related to Ken Salazar and he made some dumb decisions on vironmental issues. I think Joe was saying that all the college’s just need to put up “Gun Free Zones.”A few sign saying “No Rapist Allowed ” would also help.

Liberals need victims to do what they want to get done. They need rape victims to justify abortion and whip up distrust between men and women. They need dead bodies to push gun control. They need the poor and unemployed to attack the rich. And when robberies and home invasions pick up because of gun control, they will use that to restrict our movements and enforce curfews.

No one would ever pay attention to a liberal (except maybe to laugh and point) if we just used reason, but when they can use a victim as a shield for their policies, they could on emotion to rule over logic.

3 words. Derrick Todd Lee. A cereal rapist and killer who stalked the campus of LSU active around 2002. I had two sisters at LSU at the time. While I was a little too young to understand, my father certainly wasn’t. I am pretty sure he did not sleep at all for two years. U strongly believe the victims of DTL and any other women on campus at that particular time in LSU history would agree with any of these politicians. As a matter of fact, if your a politician who is talking about women carrying guns on or off of a campus you better be familiar with derrick Todd Lee and the terror he rained for more than a year.

Liberalism, being a serious mental impairment, a disorder if you will, does not allow the inflicted to reason, or accept facts or to see the truth. Liberals are suffering from a delusional state of mind, much like a fanatical religious fervor might bring a cult follower to deny commonly accepted reality. No amount of truth, fact, witnesses, or historic events will change the minds of liberal democrats that cannot see past their delusional thinking. Our only hope is to play harder and meaner than they do and to win more elections.

If you have a gun when the attack occurs, AND you’re trained in it’s use…you have a better chance.

That’s what a gun offers. A chance that you don’t have without it.

Can an attacker take away your weapon and kill you with it, as the Left argues? It’s possible. But let’s be honest. A criminal intent on rape will likely be armed with a knife or gun anyway. So it’s really a moot point.
The other problem with the Left’s “don’t carry a gun for rape argument” Is they offer no solution other than hope a police officer is around, beyond that..submit to the pain, and indignity and hope all he does is rape you.

It’s utterly insane, and any rational being that has the slightest bit of self worth wants that chance to defend themselves.

Until the Left gives us a rational and credible solution to crime, then their argument is just emotional spew.

Last time I checked Police were not issued a omniscient crime detector, or given the power to teleport.

Concealed carry does not mean everyone is going to carry a gun. It means every criminal must stop and wonder ARE YOU carrying a gun. If not YOU, Who else might be carrying a gun.
It works, it’s proven t work and “gun free” zones have proven miserable failures. “Gun free” means “open season”

Given the hour and the desperate situation this Nation now faces, why are the traitorous politicians violating their oaths of fidelity to the Constitution not being arrested, impeached and punished? Politicians who introduce legislation to disarm the People should be. In Missouri a bill was introduced along these lines, but we already have a process called impeachment.

In NY, Gov. Cuomo and Senator Skelos should be arrested, impeached and imprisoned for their crime against the People and their infidelity to the Constitution that they swore fidelity to. If this were to happen across the Nation, the forces of disarmament could not so easily influence politicians to violate their oaths. The reason that politicians and judges spend their careers plotting against and outright betraying the People and the Constitution is that no one ever moves to arrest and stop them. If we continue to do business in America the way that we have, can we ever expect different results?

Why not demand the arrest and impeachment of politicians working to destroy that which they have sworn allegiance and fidelity to? If this became a popular movement, it might be a game changer and put these rats on their best behavior. Tens of thousands of People clamoring for someone’s arrest and prosecution can be very motivational.

So, everyone should be strapped all of the time, everywhere in the U.S. And this is called freedom? Maybe it does in the Paranoid States of America. I preferred the old, UNITED States of America, but I am getting older I guess. Remember “love it or leave it” back when Bush was president. Why doesn’t that apply anymore?

And we all know college campuses are full of responsible, sober young adults and nothing could possibly go wrong if they were all packing.

For the record, I do have a concealed carry permit…But I don’t feel the need to exercise it that much. Usually only as a legal safeguard when I am transporting to go shooting. So far, I have been able to handle myself just fine without threatening to use my pistol. I am also pretty happy with my penis size, so I don’t feel the need to overcompensate for that either.

I’m not clear on your rant. Apparently in the first paragraph you are implying someone is forcing everyone to carry a weapon at all times, thus defeating the concept of freedom. Perhaps you are reading different sources than I am but I’m not seeing anyone advocate a requirement to carry a firearm at all times.

      I’m confused.

The woman is correct; if she had a firearm, she might have been able to stop her attacker, of course, she might be dead as well, but we’ll never know. Rape is all about power, not sex. Someone that rapes at gunpoint is on a serious power trip. The only way to counter that is to have equal power. The only equal power to a firearm is another firearm. The logic is linear and easy to follow.

Maybe I’m just not intelligent enough to follow your reasoning.

My point is that I am in my mid-30s and I don’t ever remember people feeling so compelled to buy guns and stay strapped all of the time. And I live in rural PA where guns and hunting are their own religions. When I was in high school, kids would bring hunting rifles on campus (on gun racks in their trucks). That seems crazy now, but even as wild-west as that seems compared to these days, I don’t remember people being so hell bent on being able to carry EVERYWHERE.

It just seems to be a lot of paranoia. The gun and ammo makers are LOVING it…People tell me all of the time that their rights are being eroded under this administration, but I am as free today as I was 10 years ago…and nobody has ever been able to give me a concrete example of how they aren’t just as free either.

And I went to college too. Rapes are terrible, but they aren’t new to campuses. The bigger problem is that colleges want to cover them up so they don’t get reported and included in campus crime statistics. I can’t believe that people honestly think that letting college kids have firearms on campus won’t create more problems than are fixed.

I know I am ranting and all over the place and I am sorry. I just can’t figure out why all of the sudden this is such a huge issue other than talk radio convincing people it is.

Whether you are “strapped all the time” or not is an individual choice, not the government’s. You can’t protect everyone from everything all the time, and X percent of a population will abuse a right or be an idiot. But it all comes back to you making a choice, not someone else making it for you, or telling you you have no right to make the choice. Better to have it and not need it, than to not have it when you need it.

      @JEANR

We live in a violent and brutal world. There are places and times where the violence and brutality is curbed a bit and managed. There are 2 competing philosophies that are at war with one another in how this “management” is to occur.

One philosophy is promoted heavily on the Blaze, and that is become a people of discipline and self control. A moral people that respect each other’s freedom. A people that handle their own affairs quite well, and live in a land where such freedom is possible.

The other philosophy doesn’t trust freedom, because to them it’s not fair. They don’t trust the individual to manage their affairs. They want a large all encompassing government to do it, because in their view individuals (except for the brilliant elite of which they are a part of course) are much better at managing the American herd.

To answer your question on whether or not you need to go “Strapped.”

The answer is…you’re free. A free person accepts both the responsibility of defending themselves, and the responsibility of carrying a weapon and being well trained in it’s use.

      You choose. It’s your life.

@Jean: What makes you so sure having some CCW on the college campus will be so bad? I live in Utah and at EVERY state college and university in Utah it is legal to carry concealed. I am a senior at one of the universities and will graduate this semester, in almost every class that the topic of gun control has come up there has been at least 3 people (other than myself) that have been “strapping”. Guess how many shooting Utah has had at a college campus? None. Not one. So going from this information, how is your logic even reasonable? I’m afraid its not. To repeat what others have said, if you don’t want to strap it on then dont. It doesnt matter to me, but do not feel free to tell me that I cannot be a responsible gun owner just because I am in college. However, it hasn’t been that long since the law was passed to allow CCW. Plus I also learned that 45% of the students enrolled at universities in Utah are cattle. The rest are related to each other. So I’m not sure if you can extrapolate that to the Eastern schools where young adults go and learn with people other than all the hillbilly kids they grew up with.

Hey wait a minute, I just heard from a senator or campus official that women are not smart enough to own a gun.

They must whistle if they get in trouble. Is that true ?

I guess women shouldn’t be allowed in college if they are as ignorant and Salazar seems to think. I have two masters degrees and have been attending college on an off for over 40 years and have met a whole bunch of women I thought were pretty smart and unlikely to shoot someone who looks at them in some different way. But then, I’m not as intelligent as a politician. I am, however, concerned about politicians who meet with constituents who are less than happy with the “elected” official and get in the politician’s face, if the the pol is carrying a weapon .

“Collins said she knew something was wrong the moment her attacker grabbed her from behind. Tragically, she was raped at gun point” Ok how exactly would she have had the time to pull out a gun and shoot the armed attacker. Of course he would clearly let her go to access her gun and drop his. Turning college campuses into the wild west will not make them safer, particularly with respect to gun violence. There is no logical view of the facts that were presented that would conclude she would have had the time or ability to respond with a gun in her purse. But hey nice entry in the ongoing series of reports of victims who suffered because they did not have a gun or triumphed because they had a gun.

@JRook, this is a classic cliche and a lie. The vast majority of times that weapons are made freer to the citizens, crime goes down, gun crime goes down. Hoplophobic propaganda is so easy to dispel, one wonders why it keeps being expressed.

      JROOK,
As a rape survivor myself, I can tell you that if I had a gun that evening, many things in my life would have been different. Grabbed from behind can mean a lot of things but he probably did not immediately have both of her hands restrained.

There is a point where your attacker is distracted either trying to disrobe enough to do his deed or keeping you in position… all you need is one second to draw, point and pull.

You can try to kick, scream or run, but if he has a weapon your chances are almost nil of coming out of it without a serious injury or dead.

Unarmed, you have one choice…accept that you are going to be raped and your new goal is to come out alive.

At least with a gun you have a chance at being able to make the decision to not become a victim in the first place..

Jrook, the vicitm said that she would have been able to stop two other rapes and prevent a murder from occuring. I think that she understood that there was little that she could do in her situation, but that she could have killed the guy afterwards. Alternatively, if she had been allowed to carry she may have had her hand on her gun in her purse as she was walking across the parking lot.

Jrook and Myptofvu, I doubt if either of you would have the guts to ask that young lady that question if she was standing in front of you, as you would asking any victim of a violent crime who said they wished they’d had a gun to give themselves at least a chance to save themselves. Pray you won’t ever be in the same position one day, and perhaps rethink your condescending, elitist, and indoctrinated attitudes. And while you are at it, ponder tha arrogance of telling another human what you feel is ok or not ok to defend themselves with.

      @JROOK

      It is very simple…

IF she was allowed to carry a gun to defend herself, she MIGHT have been able to do so.

As it was, she was NOT allowed to carry a gun to defend herself, and therefore was at the mercy of her attacker, which obviously showed her no mercy.

In life threatening situations there are never any guarantees. But the odds of having a better outcome than being raped and/or murdered go way up if allowed the means to defend oneself.

I agree with Colorado state Rep. Joe Salazar, no woman should have or carry a gun. Woman police officers, women in the military, etc. They are just not as smart as men are. Its always good to have liberal men attacking women and you hear nothing about it but crickets. P.S. I’m liberal also so you cannot say anything bad about me. I think every conservative needs to start calling themselves conservative. You don’t have to use facts and you can attack anyone for any reason. I’m glad I’m now liberal. (BTW I think women are smart and amazing, my wife carries and that’s why we live in a state that does.)

Leftists want women to be unarmed. Victims usually are easier to rule, also leftists and obama voters don’t want to take the chance they’ll be shot or killed when they try and rape or sexually assault a woman. Not that death would keep a Obama voter from casting his vote.

The kings and queens of “Choice” universally fail to comprehend the underlying purpose of the 2nd Amendment is the choice of whether to be armed. Taking away that CHOICE, to include my CHOICE of firearms is a violation of our constitutional rights. We are not Switzerland i.e. NO ONE is demanding they possess a firearm against their will.

Firearms are encouraged. U of O always had a rape problem. The last couple of years it’s disappeared. A few women fought back with a proper firearm fixed that.

Hmmm… What if a college went the other way on gun control. Is there a Christian College out there which would institute a new policy… no one may be admitted unless they pass a safety and qualifications course, including marksmanship, and obtain a concealed carry permit ( whether they have a gun or not). Publish the new admissions requirements, and see if it lowers the incidence of rape/assault. Track the results in the same campus over time, and compare to colleges nearby what do not allow concealed carry.

You can join the US Army at 18, receive weapons training, get deployed in Afghanistan, kill our enemies, but a responsible person cannot have a CW permit. What’s up with that? At least I was able to doctor my driver’s license at 18 so I could buy cheap beer and Red Mountain Vin Rose wine at the liquor store.

      You only have to be 21 to buy a pistol from a Licensed Dealer. At 18 you can legally purchase thru a private sale or can be gifted such as from a parent. Not a loophole or anything like that, perfectlly legal. There may be some states that futher restrict but not the Feds.;
