Colorado state Rep. Joe Salazar created a firestorm with his recent comments about woman and guns. During a debate last week, he argued that allowing firearms on college campuses won’t make people safer — but his words raised some eyebrows, particularly when he discussed the issue of rape. Salazar subsequently caught the ire of victims who found his views overtly offensive.
On Wednesday, NRA News host Cam Edwards spoke with Amanda Collins, a woman who was violently raped in 2007 at the University of Nevada. Aside from lambasting Salazar’s statements, she defended concealed carry and proclaimed that a gun would have stopped her attacker.
Before we get into her response, let’s take a quick look back at the politician’s controversial arguments, which were made last Friday during a gun debate and hearing in his state. Salazar said:
“It’s why we have call boxes, it’s why we have safe zones, it’s why we have the whistles. Because you just don’t know who you’re gonna be shooting at. And you don’t know if you feel like you’re gonna be raped, or if you feel like someone’s been following you around or if you feel like you’re in trouble and when you may actually not be, that you pop out that gun and you pop — pop a round at somebody?”
During the NRA interview, Collins, a 27-year-old wife and mother, noted that her own story contradicts many of the claims made by Salazar. She also expressed a more general frustration with politicians’ continued claims that, in her view, aren’t based on practical terms.
“It is so frustrating, because — and I wish that I could sit down with each one of these policy makers and just have a face-to-face conversation with them and tell them my story,” she said.
Collins dismissed emergency call boxes, whistles and safe zones as giving a “false sense of security.” She also said that her university didn’t have the boxes, anyway, leaving her with few resources to prevent or report the attack. However, even if these elements were in place, the young woman said that they would have been of little assistance.
“A call box above my head while I was straddled on the parking garage floor being brutally raped wouldn’t have helped me one bit,” she proclaimed. “The safe zone? Well, I was in a safe zone and my attacker didn’t care.”
As far as gun-free zones go, Collins believes they do little more than tell perpetrators they will be unmatched if and when they do decide to act out with violence. After taking issue with his arguments, Collins also tackled Salazar’s framing of women.
“The comments that he made…about women not knowing if they’re going to be raped or accidentally shooting the wrong person [were] extremely offensive, because he specifically targeted female students,” she continued. “So is he saying that all women are unable to make sound decisions in the midst of that? That we would go against our God-given instinct that something is wrong?”
In her own experience, Collins said she knew something was wrong the moment her attacker grabbed her from behind. Tragically, she was raped at gun point, in a gun-free zone, less than 100 feet away from campus authorities. The assailant went on to assault two other women and to kill a third.
“Had I been carrying that night, two other rapes would have been prevented and a young life would have been saved,” Collins said, defending students’ right to carry weapons on campus.
While the young woman had a licence to carry, it was illegal for her to have a gun on campus.

Feb. 21, 2013 at 2:36pmUnfortunately, the libs are winning the debate, because they are making the debate about what we the people would NEED in order to defend ourselves. “you don’t NEED a 30rd magazine to defend yourself… a 10 round mag will allow it”.
The problem is, the debate should NOT be about what we the people NEED. It should be about what the government has a right to legislate.
For example, the federal government is given specific enumerated powers that it has power over. Gun control is not one of them. In addition, the founders put in our constitution the bill of rights, which includes the 2nd amendment, for the specific purpose of preventing the government from trying to usurp control over guns if they decided to ignore the fact that the power was not granted in the constitution.
We need to change the conversation from “Where is the line for what kind of weapons you need to defend yourselves with” … to … “Why is the federal government involved in making laws about gun control when they not only have no authority to do so because it is not listed in the powers granted to it by the constitution, but is also specifically denied authority by the 2nd amendment”
Conservatives in this country need to stop trying to play the libs games, and start pressing the real issues.
Does the federal government have the AUTHORITY under the constitution to legislate issue X under the constitution? No? Then too bad. Get off it.

Feb. 21, 2013 at 1:57pmFacts will never deter the stupid left! Cops are historians! You call and they, usually, get there after the life threatening (or worse, life taking) event has past and make a report.
Why don’t we legislate all of this so that those who don’t want to carry or possess a firearm can place a sign on their front lawn that they are defenseless and crooks can do whatever they would like. Everyone else can possess firearms and feel safe.
Bottom-line, don’t tell me how to protect myself when you are not capable of providing for my protection.

Feb. 21, 2013 at 1:43pmBUT BUT BUT, Bob Beckel told O’Reilly this does not happen? WTH man someone is lieing and you know a Democrat can’t lie so must be this victim is lieing.
Now in all seriousness as a CCW person it is up to you if you will honor the gun free zones as carrying concealed means just that, concealed, don’t tell folks and don’t brandish. When you get attacked then you can choose to:
A) Vomit on attacker
B) Urinate on attacker
C) Per Joe Biden, pull out a double barreled shotgun and empty both barrels into the sky
D) Run to call box and blow whistle
E) Pull out your personal defense gun and defend yourself, breaking the gun free zone rules and face possible repurcussions BUT your alive and unharmed.
I for one would rather be judged by 12 rather than carried by 6.

Feb. 21, 2013 at 1:34pmJoe L and anyone that thinks like him is a danger to all women.
As a woman, i work full time, raise a child i home school, homestead, and otherwise work my behind off.
I dont have the luxury of pretending to be helpless. I dont have the time to wait for a saviour. Not only do i not have the luxury or time to play dumb, but im too dang tired at the end of the day to put up with such stupidity.
If someone is dumb enough to mess with a woman that is aware of her surroundings and is this tired of hearing liberal democrats talk about her body and her rights as though it belongs to the Government then they deserve to get their backside handed to them.

Feb. 21, 2013 at 1:32pmSalazar is a typical know it all / know NOTHING liberal. They always make accusations without offering any shred of evidence. Does this whacko have ONE single incident where that has happened?
Conservative pride themselves on offer facts and evidence to support their position, to which liberals just shrug . get glassy eye, or just attack as being racist.
That’s why I am a conservative.. I actually think before I talk.

Feb. 21, 2013 at 1:00pmWhile you are walking across the street or parking lot, carry the gun in your hand (NOT CONCEALED), it will fire quicker.
………..and stay out of the gun-free zones which empower criminals.
Did you ever notice that none of these laws ever apply to the rapists and criminals and the
laws are always on their side in a court of law….NEVER the victims ?

Feb. 21, 2013 at 12:42pmNote the faulty logic and reasoning on the left…
This one clown things that women can’t make a sensible decision during a rape due to the emotional turmoil.
And yet, they claim that a woman should be allowed the right to make a decision during emotional turmoil of an unwanted pregnancy.
Either emotions hinder cognizance, or it doesn’t.

Feb. 21, 2013 at 12:38pmLiberals don’t think about long term consequences. They want what their agenda wants, immediately. It has been proven though history and countless times that the violent, and evil will take advantage of the defenseless every time. If you are defenseless, you are a target for those who will take advantage of you. 100% true, 100% of the time.

Feb. 21, 2013 at 12:26pmIt is so frustrating when all the pollyannas out there – who haven’t YET become a victim themselves – try to tell other people, many of whom are more likely to become victims, and don’t have the option of a personal bodyguard, how to defend themselves without the proper tools for defense. The next evolution in their nannyism will be to tell people how to slice vegetables (by that point meat will be forbidden) without a knife.

Feb. 21, 2013 at 12:08pmLadies please wake up. You need to learn to do for yourselves. There is no “knight in shining armor” who is going to save you. It would be nice, but the odds are highly against it. Get a gun learn to use it and go take a martial skill. Yes, be packing everywhere you go. Never leave it behind, not even to hit the ladies room. No I’m not joking. It should go right into the stall with you. We have to end this mindset that women can’t defend themselves and that they are to “fluffy and silly” to do it.

I was wondering how different it might have been if one of them had a gun, maybe she wouldn’t have had to stare in the face of her killer and know she was going to die maybe she would have had at least a fighting a chance.
