New York Jets quarterback Tim Tebow has ignited controversy after canceling his upcoming appearance at First Baptist Church in Dallas, Texas.
Rev. Robert Jeffress, the head faith leader at the house of worship, has come under fire in the past for some contentious comments. Aside from sharing his stance about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (that it isn’t a Christian denomination), the pastor has also been criticized for statements he’s uttered about other religious systems and gays.
Let’s just take a brief trip down memory lane. In Oct. 2011, Jeffress said that then-Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney isn’t a Christian as a result of his allegiance with the Mormon faith (later, he still ended up supporting the candidate in the general election). That same month, Jeffress described both Islam and the Mormon faith as coming from “the pit of hell.” See his comments, below:
And RightWingWatch, among other outlets, has accused the pastor of being virulently anti-gay. Take a look at the description that RWW recently gave of Jeffress’ past comments about homosexuals:
He has described gays and lesbians as “perverse,” “miserable” and “abnormal” people who engage in an “unnatural” and “filthy practice” that will lead to the “implosion of our country.” Jeffress argues that the gay community employs Chinese “brainwashing techniques” in order to have homosexuality “crammed down our throats.”
Fast forward to the newest controversy surrounding Tebow and his decision to back out of a planned event at Jeffress’ church. A representative from the First Baptist Church apparently told entertainment site TMZ that the New York Jets quarterback felt pushed by the media to cancel his April 28 appearance. Some are naturally wondering if the choice was made of his own accord — or if it was rooted mainly in the criticism he was already receiving for an association with Jeffrees.
Just consider what CBS Sports’ Gregg Doyel wrote about Tebow earlier this week, prior to the cancellation:
Tim Tebow is about to make the biggest mistake of his life.
Tebow has agreed to speak at a hateful Baptist preacher’s church, an evangelical cretin named Robert Jeffress who does the work of the Lord sort of like Westboro Baptist in Topeka, Kan., does the work of the Lord.
Not at all.
Jeffress isn’t as bad as Westboro. He doesn’t send his flock to funerals of U.S. soldiers and have his sheep yell awful things like, “God hates fags.” But he comes close. Too close. He believes, he has said, “It’s a fact that [AIDS is] a gay disease so there’s a reasonable reason to exclude gays from the military.”
The church is responding to the news with prepared statements to media.
“We are saddened that Mr. Tebow felt pressure to back out of his long-planned commitment from numerous New York and national sports and news media who grossly misrepresented past comments made by our pastor, Dr. Robert Jeffress, specifically related to issues of homosexuality and AIDS, as well as Judaism,” the rep said in a statement to TMZ.
TheBlaze received a similar response from the church — one that also went on to defend Jeffrees against claims that critics have waged against him. Additionally, it took aim at societal changes that have made some of the pastor’s traditional stances more controversial than they would have been in the past. The church claims that, while the Bible has remained constant, society has not.

A screen shot that shows Tebow’s face advertised for an April 28 appearance at the church
“As a Christian pastor, Dr. Jeffress takes a biblical approach to moral and social issues, closely following his duty to preach ‘the whole counsel of God,’ and not just address issues that are politically correct,” the release reads. “First Baptist is a church built on the truth of Scripture, even though at times that approach can be perceived as controversial or counter to the prevailing winds of culture.”
As for the First Baptist’s account of the cancellation, the church maintains that Tebow called to remove himself from the scheduled event, claiming that for ”personal and professional reasons he needed to avoid controversy.” But rather than separating himself entirely, Jeffrees’ staff claim that the famed football player would still like to speak at the church sometime in the future.
In a series of tweets, Tebow addressed the controversy this morning, writing:
While I was looking forward to sharing a message of hope and Christ’s unconditional love with the faithful members of the historic First Baptist Church of Dallas in April, due to new information that has been brought to my attention, I have decided to cancel my upcoming appearance. I will continue to use the platform God has blessed me with to bring Faith, Hope and Love to all those needing a brighter day. Thank you for all of your love and support. God Bless!
TheBlaze also reached out to Tebow’s representatives to clarify details, but we have not yet received a response.

Feb. 21, 2013 at 3:06pmTim Tebow is on the verge of being out of the NFL. His dream has always been to be a starting QB for an NFL team. He was lied to about the NY Jets situation. Now he sees that he has lost most of his stock in any team willing to give him another shot. This speech would not help him, being on the fringe of being a 8 game wonder out of the league after three years. That would make him a first round draft bust.
This move was calculated to keep himself in the spotlight. He is being shopped for trade by the Jets. If they dont get any offers he will be released. Flawed quarterback but a winner and competitive force of nature. He is attempting to show flexibility to teams. A lot comes with Tim Tebow beyond the game of football.
For my personal preference. I want to see him play. I loved watching this kid since his time at Florida. I just do not believe he will be given another shot. The f***er beat my Steelers in overtime dammit!

Feb. 22, 2013 at 10:11amThis is pretty simple really. This church’s pastor preaches hatred against Mormons, Catholics and gays. I think Tebow probably belongs to the “unconditional love of Christ” school of thought.

Feb. 22, 2013 at 2:10pm@sendthemeteors……Unfortunately, your broad-brush comments are both wrong. Pastor Jeffress is the Senior Pastor of a church which is tied to the Southern Baptist Convention. Southern Baptists believe in the authoritativeness of Scripture and preach/teach from that perspective. Scripture condemns the the sexual practices of homosexuals (no more or less than it condemns sexual sins of heterosexuals). He does not preach “hate” toward Catholics or Mormons (wow, liberals love to sow that word ‘hate’ when they disagree with you). He does teach that the practices and theology within Catholicism have challenges and that the theology and background of Mormonism have no place in orthodox Christianity. It’s OK if don’t agree with him, but don’t make blatant lies about him.

Feb. 21, 2013 at 3:29pmJesus would be welcomed everywhere today…as He will be. Maybe some of His haters, those spawned by Satan or brain-washed by liberal Marxists wouldn’t like Him much, but Jesus – who owns it all…every last sliver of gold and controls the entire Universe would come as a gentle lover of all life… He created us. HE is not us. He is thrilled when we choose Him, and sad when we don’t.
Those of us who have been fortunate enough to understand this as fully as humans can understand feel so blessed. Take everything GOOD, decent, Courageous, Hopeful, Spirited, Amazing, Wonderful, Glorious and True and put them in one being: Jesus. If you don’t know Him as those things, you are the one who is missing out. Get on board…train is rollin’. You either spend Eternity with Jesus or in Hell. There is no other choice, but YOU have to make it. How? Just ask Him. It’s really that easy…and for all the little human beings that race around this planet pointing fingers or ridiculing can’t stop you from hearing THE TRUTH. I feel sorry for this Preacher-Dude, he obviously has a whole lot to learn. I’m a HUGE TEBOW fan and over the years believe that What you see is what you get with Tim and He is a great inspiration! Unfortunately, the ‘social justice’ mentality has invaded the LORD’S house and adhering to scripture is just TOO difficult. Feb. 21, 2013 at 4:49pmJesus would definitely not be welcomed anywhere. Let me show you why…
1. He would look like a muslim not the blue eyed brown straight haired picture most people see
2. If he came back and proclaimed to be Jesus he would be thrown in a mental hospital
3. He would definitely not come to america. I believe brazil has the highest christian population
4. I am pretty sure all the crucifixes might cause ptsd
5. If a man walked up to you dressed in robes and sandals and did a sleight of hand magic trick akin to turning water into wine and said “i am jesus.” Would you believe him and follow him to the grave?

Feb. 21, 2013 at 7:08pmThose that worship Me, worship Me in Spirit and in Truth! I have never heard this preacher so i am not aware of his manner of delivery of the Gospel. If he is standing on the Word of Truth (minus personal attacks) It is the Word of God that we need to hear…God loves the sinner but hates the sin. Homosexuality is a sin and if you believe God by His Spirit, you can walk away a changed person in Christ Jesus…He changes you from the inside out…Man can legislate laws contrary to the will of God all they want but inside the person in their hEARt the conflict will remain…God’s law is set.. by the Godhead. A person has a free will to chose..the consequences will be in place at the end of all things. God is just and He made a way through Jesus, the Christ to be forgiven, to have a new start in life/to make a change! It is a gift you receive or reject…only you. Only you will bear the just recompense for your own actions…you can not play the blame game like they do here on Earth. Accept or reject it as you want…but you play with your eternity… Just because you do not believe in the reality of God or His Word does not make it less real…it just leaves you losing out forever..by your own volition..But do so knowing God loves you and gave you this gift…I hope you consider receiving His eternally precious gift of life!

Feb. 21, 2013 at 2:58pmPastor Jeffreys message aligns with scripture, it is our duty as a Christian to back it. We may say it differently, but bottom line is Jesus was anything BUT politically correct for his day and we need to follow HIS example, which I believe Jeffreys is doing.
Time needs to remember to NOT be intimidated by media or “the world” because it is not THEM, but the Lord Who holds His future. To succeed in a cruel and sinful world because you were afraid to speak up or live your creed is in many ways condoning it. IF I had to explain my actions, I’d rather it be to media and not to God.

Feb. 21, 2013 at 2:57pmFirst, LGBT has a high incidence of aids and many other sexually transmitted diseases. The CDC specifically targets certain prevalent ones related to these sexual choices. GOD, through the Bible, has spoken quite clearly about these behaviors in Leviticus 18 and Romans 1. He also has sprinkled throughout scriptures and consequences for adultry, fornication, and all sexual immorality, which ultimately includes sin against self and GOD leading to “burning in hell”, but no need to fear for loneliness as there are many other sins which also ends there including backbiting, lying, and even fear! I only get riddled up or specific about LGBT, when the supporters start yelling. I think adultry, fornication, and sexual immorality pretty much cover the grosser areas.
Second, MORMONs have one very big thing in common with ALL Christian faiths…get ready to get really mad at me….heresies. I am a Bible believing Christian….the entire thing. I have attended many different denominations meeting, and I find things contrary or heretical in every service and life of every Christian (my own struggles). Mormons have some areas I question: the book “Another Testimony of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints”, wives being resurrected from grave by husbands, ruling planets and having celetrial babies for eternity. I really love Mormons and admire their community support of each other. Samaritans (Mormons?): Jesus didn’t condemn them, but spoke truth to a sinful woman.

You compound this error with arguing to infinity false logic chopping when you say that to point out a SPECIFIC “no go” area in Scripture is de facto “hate speech thrown at everyone not as perfect as you.”
To this you add an element of hypocrisy in “everyone not as perfect as you” as if YOU can assign motives and make judgements free from “hate”. How is what YOU are doing in Judging those who disagree with you ANY different from what YOU accuse THEM of?

Feb. 21, 2013 at 3:23pmNaw, surf, “by their fruits shall they be known”. Or, as the 20th as opposed to the 1st’s Century’s Greatest Philosopher points out. “It is as it does.”
Saying of something on Biblical and Orthodox Doctrinal Grounds “God ain’t cool wid dat!” is NOT in any way shape or form either “judging” inappropriately or “hate”.
As Duke’s Premier Ethicist Stanley Hauerwas puts it, when he ain’t using profanity that is—
“NAME the SIN”!
You and Lee want to take a “softer gentler” approach, go for it, but that doesn’t give you leave to, or excuse you having done, busting somebody else’s chops for “telling it like it IS” as we said in the 60s.
You not comfie with calling an act of perversion an act of perversion then don’t, but you don’t get to make judgements about those who do. Which is, as I’m sure I don’t need to point out, EXACTLY the kind of Judgemental behavior you are accusing THEM of.
Me, I don’t mess in “judgement” a’tall. I “tell it like it IS!”, I “NAME THE EFFN SIN!” to more accurately quote Stanley. I TRY to do it with appropriate graciousness, love, etc, but if I err I will err on the side of Calling Pervs Pervs, because, to work a C.S. Lewis riff in “Screwtape Letters”, NOT calling a perv a perv is THE DOMINANT tendency of our age. I choose not to flow with that but rather the reverse.

Feb. 21, 2013 at 11:49pm@FightingLee If we don’t tell them they are sinning how will they know? If I was blind and walking towards a cliff would you not tell me? Its the same for sinners. If we as christians do not warn others, we are guilty of not warning them. We are basically letting them walk off that cliff. Jesus told us to go into the world and preach the gospel.
“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. 14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. 17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. 19 Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom. Feb. 22, 2013 at 9:53amThat is why Jesus was hated by the Pharasees and the Saducees. When truth is given whether by Jesus or by anyone else the response will either be received with gladness or rejected with hate. Jesus came and spoke truth and yet the world hated him and he said that if we stood upon the truth of his word we too would be hated. When Jesus whiped and drove out the moneychangers he loved everyone of them as should we. But he in love had to let them know that what they were doing was wrong. That is why God gave us the 10 Commandments so that we might know of our sinfulness and the impossibility of man to be righteous apart from the work of God. It is when we don’t tell someone of their sinfulness and God’s gift of forgiveness through Jesus, that we don’t love them. If a person is not told of their sinfulness then there would be no need of repentance and no need of a savior and they would die in their sins. We are not to be hateful but loving to the sinner but we are also to be forcefull in our stand against sin all sin.

Feb. 21, 2013 at 3:42pmThis is what his agent should have told him:
“Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables” (IITimothy 4:2-4).
Today there are many who want religion to comfort them IN their sin rather than demanding that they forsake it. One of the characteristics of false prophets is that they say, “peace, peace, when there is no peace.” There are plenty of those out there that will tell you what you want to hear if that’s what your are looking for.
I have said on here many times that I am a sinner. I am enough of a sinner to know that sin, whatever it is, no matter how insignificant it may seem, brings misery to the sinner and those around him. Make no mistake, as patient as He is with sinners, Jesus wants us to forsake our sin and follow after Him. I don’t know much about Jeffress, but I know a good shepherd warns his sheep in a loud voice and drives away the wolves that would devour them. If your particular predominant sin happens to be in vogue right now, I feel sorry for you because you need to be warned against it, not coddled and encouraged in it.

We have to remember Tebow is still young and according to my faith is allowed to make mistakes in judgment as long as he gains knowledge from his mistakes, (IMO).
This is the kind of evil Christians are up against in this world. Straight from our Lord’s mouth.

It’s almost as if whoever is advising Tebow about this decision is living in “Bizarro” world. Instead of shaking off the dust and denouncing the media for it’s hatred of Christian doctrine he walks away from a church that’s trying to save lost sinners and defend the faith.

The sin of homosexuality is no different than the sin of gossip, sloth, greed, lying, or anything else. All have sinned. Tebow could have taken the opportunity to set the church straight (no pun intended) and remind them to love everyone, even though they sin.

Feb. 21, 2013 at 3:32pmRelationship with God is not only declaring His love for us but also our love for Him and that means saying to ourselves…not my will be done but thy will be done (Matt 26:42), and I will control the lust of my flesh by the power of the Holy Spirit who lives inside of me. (Romans 8:13)
We ought to walk (live our lives) in such a manner that is pleasing to the Lord and everyone of us should “know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honor”. (1 Thes. 4:1-4)
Relationship with God also involves preparing ourselves for the Judgment seat of Christ where we will receive our just reward for the things we have done both good AND bad. (2 Cor. 5:10)
God does not expect us to accept His love for us and not change…rather, He is expecting us to be “transformed by the renewing of our mind” (Romans 12-2) and grow into a knowledge of God that reflects the very image of Christ. (Eph. 4:13)
Christians are dumbing down the gospel message the same way that society is dumbing down the educational system and this needs to stop.

Feb. 21, 2013 at 3:34pmActually Critter, Paul said – “Shun immorality and all sexual looseness [flee from impurity in thought, word, or deed]. Any other sin which a man commits is one outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body.” (1 Corinthians 6:18 Amplified Version)
So sexual sins are not the same as the other sins you listed.

Feb. 22, 2013 at 8:35pmDaniel – I could begin by asking if you have a doctorate in either Hebrew of Greek, but I imagine I already know the answer. And no, neither do I. However, having spent many hours studying the subject under those who do hold such credentials, it is a certainty that according to the scriptures, sexual relations outside the bonds of traditional Holy Matrimony is sinful. That would include homosexuality.

Not a sin? If Sodom & Gomorrah is a myth, atheist scientists and archeologists need to explain the more than 1,500,000 bodies found buried in vertical shafts, inside 3 ancient cemeteries there. Also, where did the millions of round balls of nearly pure sulfur (brimstone) found there come from? The area is now a hot, barren desert. If it were not well watered before the destruction as the Bible says – how could the area have supported well over a million well fed people?

The CDC is a hate group then because they also point this truth out:
Incidence is the number of new HIV infections that occur during a given year. CDC estimates that approximately 50,000 people in the United States are newly infected with HIV each year. In 2010 (the most recent year that data are available), there were an estimated 47,500 new HIV infections. [2] Most (63%) of these new infections occurred in gay and bisexual men. Black/African American men and women were also strongly affected and were estimated to have an HIV incidence rate that was almost 8 times as high as the incidence rate among whites.

Remember, Christ was the one eating and drinking with the sinners and publicans. He was stopping people from stoning a young woman and yes, even breaking the coveted rules against the sabath because they were such tightwads about everything.
Again, First baptist church = saducees
If Christ were here today, his message would be about love, yes a call to repentance, but not by condemning everyone to hell. I dont remember him condemning the woman guilty of fornication to hell, he told her to rise and do better. The baptist church would just throw the rock.

I just find the actual written history of Jesus’ personality to be quite different than that of modern evangelicals who condemn everyone to hell. I read about a man who was firm on teachings, but loving and patient towards individuals. The only ones he lost his patience for were the ones judging everyone else, like the scribes, pharisees, and saducess. He might not accept the practices of all us sinners, but he didnt turn a cold sholder and condemn us. He was the one sitting and talking to them, reaching out.

What God says about the power to condemn for sin:
John 5:22 NAS
“For not even the Father judges anyone, but He has given all judgment to the Son
One name God’s word for Jesus is “The ONE who is ready to JUDGE”.
1 Peter 4:5 NAS
but they will give account to Him (Jesus) who is ready to judge the living and the dead.
Anyone calling themselves a “Christian”, yet thinks he is in a situation to condemn, is sadly not a Christian. They do not know Christ, nor his attributes, nor his and only his power, nor his finished works.

Feb. 21, 2013 at 2:56pmI’ve known of Jeffress for several years, he was Pastor of a church in my hometown before he left for Dallas. From what I’ve seen and heard from him, I have yet to hear anything from him I don’t agree with. He doesn’t “condemn people to hell”, but he does call sin sin and tells what he believes, based on his interpretation of scripture. Last I heard, that was the job of a Pastor.
I’ve been a member of a few Baptist churches over the years, and what Jeffress preaches is not much different than the other Pastors I’ve had the pleasure to hear. Some people may not like his message, but the Gospel tends to offend people, mainly those who don’t want to receive the message.
I don’t understand why Tebow canceled, but I won’t condemn his actions without knowing the specifics. Overall I think Tebow is a good Christian guy. Personally, I wish he would have kept his commitment to speak. Maybe he did cancel because he was being pressured. If so, I believe that was a mistake on his part, but we all make mistakes and we all fall short of the Glory of God.
