A University of Michigan student who took a break from studies to serve four years in the U.S. Navy and then returned to academics is saying the school has a policy that is discriminating against veterans.
Sophomore Brian Stone told WIDV when he returned from service to the university, he was billed for out-of-state tuition, adding $10,000.

Brian Stone (Image: WIDV screenshot)
“And then I got a letter in the mail saying that due to my overseas service that I may be considered an out-of-state resident. I had a $6,000 bill that was left for me,” Stone said according to WIDV.
“We’re not happy about this policy. We think it pushes veterans away,” he continued. “Actually, we’ve lost 40 percent of our veterans this semester at the University of Michigan Dearborn just because of this.”
Stone, as part of the Student Veterans Association, asked university leaders Thursday to change this policy.
He also started a petition for his cause and included these other examples of veterans he believes were discriminated against through the policy:
In one case, the residency classification office told a veteran she needed to legally separate from her spouse, who is working out of state to pay for her extra tuition, in order to “cut out-of-state ties” and receive in state tuition.
In another case, they told an Iraq war veteran and Marine Corps Staff Sergeant, who had never left the state of Michigan except for military deployments, that he was an out of state resident because he “left the state of Michigan and went to Iraq for a year.”
WIDV reported that Stone was able to get his out-of-state student designation changed, but it took four months, during which time he paid the higher tuition cost.
“Do they think Iraq and Afghanistan are military VACATION HOMES? This is outrageous and MUST STOP!” Stone wrote in his petition.
According to University of Michigan’s residency guidelines, those living outside the state who want to receive in-state tuition — those who don’t reside there for education, volunteer actives, military service or employment are a few examples — must file Application for Resident Classification. There are filing deadlines based on the school calendar.

Feb. 22, 2013 at 2:22pmThere has to be more to this story. If Michigan is charging him out of state tuituion, this means he did not join the Navy in Michigan which means he is not a state resident until he fulfulls whatever the state requires you to do. I’m fairly certain that when one joins the military, regardless of how long you’re in, you retain residency in that state. In other words, it appears we have another veteran who thinks that just because he fought in a war he can come back and expect special treatment. If he goes to his “home state” they will charge him in-state tuition.

Feb. 22, 2013 at 3:26pmI believe all of this is done on purpose.
The way vets are treated.
Gay marriage in the Military
Beastiality in the Military
Scare the dickens out of children when it comes to guns.
Joe Biden’s comment: “You know, education, if you make the most of it, if you study hard and you do your homework, and you make an effort to be smart, uh, you, you can do well. If you don’t, you get stuck in Iraq.”
In other words the military is for idiots.
Women fighting on the frontlines
All of this is to deliberately weaken the Military.
And by extention weaken America.
That is Obama’s true agenda. The one he was picked for.
If you have no love for country, and that is quite clear when it comes to Obama, nothing stands in the way of the destruction that Obama is involved with.

Feb. 22, 2013 at 5:31pmHe may have done what many of us did — declare another state to be your residence to avoid state income taxes. I know lots of Navy vets who were Florida “residents” while on active duty.
You can declare any state your “residence” when filling out paperwork. That leaves you with the option of your “residence” or where you actually are stationed for driver’s license and car plates. You vote in the state you declare as your official residence.

Feb. 22, 2013 at 11:02amI saw a lot of DD-214s due to the nature of my job. It may have changed since then, but I recall that they had a home state listed on them. If this is still the case, then if a discharge paper lists Michigan as the home state, it should be the state for which in-state tuition for higher education purposes applies, presuming the veteran has not moved elsewhere since serving.

Feb. 22, 2013 at 10:33amThis is one more effort by the leftists to humiliate and dishonor our nations veterans who have placed so much on the line for our freedom and security.
To the left, veterans are to be abused, used and discarded in the end, as they are the guardians of our land and people and the Constitution. Thus they are an impediment to complete consolidation of power in their hands; illegal immigrants are seen as being ‘more worthy’ than our veterans to the left.
The university is discriminating, in my opinion, against him and he should bring action to the courts if they refuse to rectify the matter.

Feb. 22, 2013 at 10:31amThe VA is also giving letters to those Vets who have been wounded in combat saying that they are forbidden to own a firearm and if they have one they’ll be charged with a felony. Those with both physical and “psychological” wounds. If you’re a vet and want to keep your rights. Keep your thoughts to yourself. If you tell anyone that you have problems sleeping, or have anxiety or frustration or anything normal humans feel after being in a stressful situation.. they’ll strip you of your rights and declare you psychologically unsound. The world we live in is becoming increasingly Orwellian. I bet sooner or later they’ll start demanding to see the IPs of posters to sites like this. Will Beck comply?

Feb. 22, 2013 at 10:48am@Cav, I see it every day in my line of work. Docs these days (well, some of them) are willing to call almost anything a mental disorder. Those same docs are also willing to prescribe meds for all of those so-called disorders at the drop of a hat. It’s not happening to only vets, but to many other people experiencing this funny thing called Life. In light of the gun control issue, the left will deal with mental health, alright, but only after they manage to get every single human emotion classified as a mental disorder.

Feb. 22, 2013 at 10:53amThe concept of “higher learning” is lost on the colleges and universities today as none of them seem to be able to get past the mean minded and small stone cold hearts that liberalism instills in its unwitting recipients. It is a self perpetuating system to the end that a college degree doesn’t represent true higher education but more effective indoctrination. This is too often an effort to produce clones of the mean spirited liberal professor rather than prepared men and women capable of rational and logical thought who can if they desire to go beyond the foundation supposedly laid down by their instructors.
The veteran in this article is a threat to the University of Michigan because he isn’t a shapeless blob of clay waiting to be shaped by people who most often have no valid life experiences beyond “ivy covered walls”, but is a valuable source of real experiences that will most likely serve him better than the information he will gain from college. He will be able to separate out the b.s. from the truth far better than most of his classmates.

Having left off school for a while and enlisted in the service, I was out in the boonies when at mail call I received a demand notice from the school for $3.64 for telephone service. It was pretty d@mned amusing at the time. When I returned some years later, I had to pony up the $3.64 before I could re-register.
