4 Egyptian Students Arrested After Making ‘Harlem Shake’ YouTube Video: ‘A Scandalous Act’

The “Harlem Shake” has taken the world by storm in a unique way — unlike other YouTube sensations, where people watch and play the video millions of times, the dance apparently inspires others to make their own creations.

According to NPR, the University of Georgia men’s swim and dive team performed the dance underwater, and the Norwegian army did it in the snow.

But when some Egyptians decided to join in on the fun, they were apparently arrested.

According to the Agence France-Presse:

Egyptian police said Saturday they have arrested four students who filmed themselves publicly dancing in their underwear, as more people around the world emulate a viral dance craze called the “Harlem Shake.”

The four pharmaceutical students shocked residents of a middle class Cairo neighbourhood when they removed most of their clothes and videotaped themselves performing the pelvis-thrusting dance, a police official said.

The hostile audience tried to assault the students, who are accused of committing “a scandalous act,” the official added.

Egypt has strict public indecency laws. [Emphasis added]

Egyptian media has reported on the incident, but few are posting the exact video.

It seems the Harlem Shake is actually quite popular in Egypt — a YouTube search shows at least 3 videos filmed in the post-revolution “Arab Spring” nation.

The first seems to be the most likely contender — (content warning: the video does show 4 men dancing in their underwear):

This one is also gaining a lot of traction, though. Filmed in front of the pyramids, the group says they were eventually stopped by police, but managed to record a 30-second video (same content warning):

It actually looked like they were having a pretty good time. It’s better to make videos than IEDs. And if they want to pray five times a day to Allah, live in the seventh century and have their women to walk around in bee keeper outfits, who cares?

Part of the lyrics say: You can do it underwater, you can do it in the air. You can do the Harlem Shake, do it, do it anywhere? Hmmm, lets see….

Of course they were arrested. These idiots should have known they would be. Music and dancing are forbidden in Islam. Joy is forbidden in Islam. Any kind of celebration is forbidden in Islam. Islam is “serious” and all behavior must be dedicated to submitting to Allah and his perfect prophet, Mohammed. As for women, well, women are also forbidden in Islam. Men dress up like women because real women must be hidden away, never to be seen or heard from.

I went to YouTube and watched most of the original “Harlem Shake” video. Can someone tell me why this is such a sensation? At least with “GangNam Style” there was a catchy tune.

Did anyone notice something very strange about the videos? I thought musslims hated gays? No females all men . Some dressing like the Village people?
No one got hung or shot or be headed.I wonder why there was no females. I guess the beheading rapeing and killing them kinda ran them short on women. No I know what it is , it’s better to be a flammer than a woman?
Kinda like christians in America saying it’s alright to be gay but to cheat on your wife or you if you don’t drop some money into their slush funds is worse.
