4 Egyptian Students Arrested After Making ‘Harlem Shake’ YouTube Video: ‘A Scandalous Act’

The “Harlem Shake” has taken the world by storm in a unique way — unlike other YouTube sensations, where people watch and play the video millions of times, the dance apparently inspires others to make their own creations.

According to NPR, the University of Georgia men’s swim and dive team performed the dance underwater, and the Norwegian army did it in the snow.

But when some Egyptians decided to join in on the fun, they were apparently arrested.

According to the Agence France-Presse:

Egyptian police said Saturday they have arrested four students who filmed themselves publicly dancing in their underwear, as more people around the world emulate a viral dance craze called the “Harlem Shake.”

The four pharmaceutical students shocked residents of a middle class Cairo neighbourhood when they removed most of their clothes and videotaped themselves performing the pelvis-thrusting dance, a police official said.

The hostile audience tried to assault the students, who are accused of committing “a scandalous act,” the official added.

Egypt has strict public indecency laws. [Emphasis added]

Egyptian media has reported on the incident, but few are posting the exact video.

It seems the Harlem Shake is actually quite popular in Egypt — a YouTube search shows at least 3 videos filmed in the post-revolution “Arab Spring” nation.

The first seems to be the most likely contender — (content warning: the video does show 4 men dancing in their underwear):

This one is also gaining a lot of traction, though.  Filmed in front of the pyramids, the group says they were eventually stopped by police, but managed to record a 30-second video (same content warning):

It would be even funnier if they cut to some women in full cover doing the dance. That would really set the police off!! There’s no dancing in sharia countries!!! Silly young people just want to have fun.

Considering the bunch that has just been elected to office there, I think I would’ve recorded in the safety of my own home or apartment. I guess that still would be no guarantee that the morality police wouldn’t arrest me anyway, but why make it easy for the neanderthals to find you? At least wear masks, and split when the cops come! (I wouldn’t do this myself, but they aren’t hurting anyone.)

How dare you students actually believe CNN’s report that the people of Egypt got the freedom they fought for with the Muslim Brotherhood leading the revolt.

Anything about the war in Afghanistan where our beloved veterans are being killed by rules of engagement? No. Where is the body count?

    that’s news???

another culture finds our culture to be tasteless and vulgar??
Ironically, this is the same culture that in its own act of frenzy — physically (sexually) assaulted female reporters in Tahrir Square.

But you can’t lump everyone in the same group.

The Muslims didn’t need Western culture to show them “vulgarity.” Their whole culture is based on vulgarity. ALL of it. They hide it behind closed doors. That is all. These kids would not be under arrest if they didn’t air the Mullahs dirty laundry. Google the “Dancing Boys of Afghanistan.” Pedophelia is the NORM, so if female rape. Every degenrate sexual deviation is the norm in Islam, behind closed doors. For men only. The authorities need to arrest those who taught these boys to be vulgar. Oh, wait…….it WAS the authorities that taught them. DOWN WITH DICTATORS. Fight Egyptians fight.
