‘Carnage on the Racetrack’: Horrific Last-Lap Crash Injures Fans, Brings Daytona to a Halt

(TheBlaze/AP) — At least 30 NASCAR fans were injured Saturday when large chunks of debris, including a tire, sailed into the grandstands when a car flew into the fence on a frightening last-lap accident in the second-tier Nationwide Series race at Daytona International Speedway.

As emergency workers tended to injured fans and ambulance sirens wailed in the background, a somber Tony Stewart skipped the traditional post-race victory celebration. The crash began as the field closed in on the finish line and sent rookie Kyle Larson’s car sailing into the fence that separates the track from the seats.

Large chunks of Larson’s car landed in the grandstands. The car itself had its entire front end sheared off, with the burning engine wedged through a gaping hole in the fence.

Neither NASCAR nor Daytona International Speedway officials had any immediate details on injuries in the accident in the race held the day before the season-opening Daytona 500.

“There obviously was some intrusion into the fence and fortunately with the way the event’s equipped up, there were plenty of emergency workers ready to go and they all jumped in on it pretty quickly,” NASCAR President Mike Helton said. “Right now, it’s just a function of determining what all damage is done. They’re moving folks, as we’ve seen, to care centers and take some folks over to Halifax Medical.”

Stewart, who won for the 19th time at Daytona and seventh time in the last nine season-opening Nationwide races, was in no mood to celebrate.

“The important thing is what going on on the frontstretch right now,” said Stewart, the three-time NASCAR champion. “We’ve always known, and since racing started, this is a dangerous sport. But it’s hard. We assume that risk, but it’s hard when the fans get caught up in it.

“So as much as we want to celebrate right now and as much as this is a big deal to us, I’m more worried about the drivers and the fans that are in the stands right now because that was … I could see it all in my mirror, and it didn’t look good from where I was at.”

The accident spread into the upper deck and emergency crews treated fans on both levels. There were five stretchers that appeared to be carrying fans out, and a helicopter flew overhead. A forklift was used to pluck Larson’s engine out of the fence, and there appeared to be a tire in the stands.

Daytona President Joie Chitwood waited by steps as emergency workers attended to those in the stands. Across the track, fans pressed against a fence and used binoculars trying to watch. Wrecked cars and busted parts were strewn across the garage.

“It’s a violent wreck. Just seeing the carnage on the racetrack, it’s truly unbelievable,” driver Justin Allgaier said.

It was a chaotic finish to a race that was stopped nearly 20 minutes five laps from the finish by a 13-car accident that sent driver Michael Annett to a local hospital for further evaluation. NASCAR said Annett was awake and alert.

The race resumed with three laps to go, and the final accident occurred with Regan Smith leading as he headed out of the final turn to the checkered flag. He admittedly tried to block Brad Keselowski to preserve the win.

“I tried to throw a block, it’s Daytona, you want to go for the win here,” Smith said. “I don’t know how you can play it any different other than concede second place, and I wasn’t willing to do that today. Our job is to put them in position to win, and it was, and it didn’t work out.”

As the cars began wrecking all around Smith and Keselowski, Stewart slid through for the win, but Larson plowed into Keselowski and his car was sent airborne into the stands. When Larson’s car came to a stop, it was missing its entire front end. The 20-year-old, who made his Daytona debut this week, stood apparently stunned, hands on his hips, several feet away from his car, before finally making the mandatory trip to the care center.

He later said his first thought was with the fans.

“I hope all the fans are OK and all the drivers are all right,” Larson said. “I took a couple big hits there and saw my engine was gone. Just hope everybody’s all right.”

He said he was along for the ride in the last-lap accident.

“I was getting pushed from behind, I felt like, and by the time my spotter said lift or go low, it was too late,” Larson said. “I was in the wreck and then felt like it was slowing down and I looked like I could see the ground. Had some flames come in the cockpit, but luckily I was all right and could get out of the car quick.”

One spectator was filming the race from the stands when the crash occurred:

It appeared fans were lined right along the fence when Larson’s car sailed up and into it.

Keselowski watched a replay of the final accident, but said his first thoughts were with the fans. As for the accident, he agreed he tried to make a winning move and Smith tried to block.

“He felt like that’s what he had to do, and that’s his right. The chaos comes with it,” Keselowski said. “I made the move and he blocked it, and the two of us got together and started the chain events that caused that wreck. First and foremost, just want to make sure everyone in the stands is OK and we’re thinking about them.”

Keselowski said the incident could cast a pall on Sunday’s Daytona 500.

“I think until we know exactly the statuses of everyone involved, it’s hard to lock yourself into the 500,” Keselowski said. “Hopefully, we’ll know soon and hopefully everyone’s OK. And if that’s the case, we’ll staring focusing on Sunday.”

However, they will be ready to race on Sunday.

“We’re very confident that we’ll be ready for tomorrow’s event with the 55th running of the Daytona 500,” Steve O’Donnell, NASCAR’s senior vice president of racing operations, said.

Here’s the official video of what happened, as seen on television:

How long before, Liberals line up to ban NASCAR…?

It’s not like they;re a fan? They pretty much hate the NASCAR fans! Gun loving, SUV driving, religious, hard working Americans with disposable incomes. To them that’s money they can spend better than the earners, how dare they use their money as they see fit.

@Miami Or ‘regulate’ it more, I was wondering that to. Especially with the fuss they’ve been making about football.

/sarcasm Latest news: ‘Democrats lose big in elections not because of policies and attack ads but because of them attacking and regulating the snot out of NASCAR and football in the way they have been doing so.’ /sarcasm Now that would be crazy.

I ran the accident in slow-mo and you could see a front tire fly about 150 feet up into the stands…I do pray that all fans come through alright……
I’m now concerned whether they run the 500 tomorrow…….I sure hope they do as ALL fans of Nascar understand there is danger that can’t be controlled completely…

      DUCK YALL!!
I’m from the south and have been to several races – Talledaga, Atlanta etc.
      BUT
They (NASCAR) have already regulated it to the point that I don’t even watch it anymore.
No one car has an advantage due their personal testing and advancements.
NASCAR ensures all cars are nearly identical – short of the emblems on the nose and the paint schemes.
That’s what CAUSES the huge pileup.
No one car is fast enough to get AWAY from the rest so they drive in a pack.
Auto makers have even quit dumping money into testing due to the fact that their advancements are quicky handed to all the other teams.

hmmm, the advancements made by the smart teams are “redistributed” to the teams that made no advancements on their own…

      Sounds familiar.

In 1987 Bill Elliot qualified at Talledaga at 212MPH.
Due to NASCAR slowing cars down and regulating things, that record still holds today –
      25 YEARS LATER!!!

      Hope the fans are OK.

What if NACAR changed the rules.
      1. Half way through a race, all the cars have to make a mandatory pit stop so they can turn around and finish the race going the other way. They don’t have to do it at the same time, but within 5 laps on either side of the middle lap.

      2. Have 2 fly-by’s. One during the singing of the Star Spangled Banner and one at lap 400. Lap 400 would consist of pilots who are die-hard race fans with three rounds of 20MM shells, to be used at their discretion.

      3. Laps 496 – 499 would have to be driven in reverse.

      4. On lap 500 the drivers have to stop at turn 3, get out of their cars and run to the finish line. Michael Waltrip gets an automatic 2 minute head start on all drivers.

      5. After crossing the finish line on foot the drivers still must run to their respective pit box, jump into those little go-karts they like to race off season in their back yards, drive to the back-stretch straight away through the infield where they park all those fancy pants RV’s, get back onto the race track and cross the finish line. without spilling a cup of Mountain Dew or Milk or whatever happens to be a sponsor of their cars.
Just some random ideas to make this a safer world for our children.
Number 5 might be a little complicated but with practice it could work.

NASCAR is to be credited with high accolades for caring about fan safety! Can you even imagine what would have occurred IF the catch fence hadn’t been there? Also, that all the drivers involved walked away with at worst bumps and bruises is another credit to NASCAR saftey.

There will always be a chance of accidents at any event where high speed is involved and as a 50 year fan of NASCAR racing, I know that when I go to a track, there is always the chance that some freak accident might wind up in the stands and I might get hurt but it is a risk I’m willing to take. A person has a far better chance of getting killed or injured on his/her commute to work and back home every day than at a NASCAR race.

Pray for a full, speedy and complete recovery for the injured fans. Also thank NASCAR for it’s concern for fan saftey and its continued efforts to keep the tracks safe.

Mmmmm….gotta agree with POSTER. I enjoy The Blaze, I like their mission, but they have the crappiest, most ineffective headlines. They really need to rethink their approach.

EFFECTIVE headlines have an active verb. Example: “Carnage on the Racetrack” is a title; “Last Lap Crash INJURES Fans” is a headline —> Something DOES something. That is a headline.

The Blaze tends to use teasers like “see what happens when ______”. That is not a headline, that is a side-show technique to get people to visit the freak show. It is not good journalism.

We were watching as this happened, and I commend NASCAR and ESPN to respect the victims – to a point – most of the drivers were very concerned and a upset that fans were injured. Stewart was a stand up guy for down-playing his win in this race due to the cirmumstances. However, it quickly became a lawyered up situation when ESPN cut out without any word on victims at all -like no mention at all. My prayer are for those injured- and no one else.

This is the kind of thing that happens in “restrictor-plate” races. They restrict the output of the engines because it is thought to be “safer”…..when in reality it forces tight group racing because nobody can utilize their individual talent and horsepower to extend a lead away from other cars.

Close proximity racing isn’t what the fans want (despite what is promoted), and the drivers hate it with a passion – just ask any one of them off camera (I have).

It’s the equivalent of “group think” that is imposed on NASCAR for whatever reason.

The only way to end restrictor-plate racing is for the drivers and team owners to boycott the races that impose it.

Geoff Bodine’s wreck occurred with an unrestricted engine. Racers will push every envelope they get. I did like the unrestricted race as it forced drivers to lift. But to say the restrictor plates or throttle body racing is causing this is inaccurate. Also, fans do want to see tight racing. It is naive to think that 1 car in this highly competitive sport has the ability to pull away from the pack.

This was an accident and an unforeseen issue with parts leaving the track area. The fence “wrap” was extended after Geoff Bodine’s wreck. I doubt they can effectively cantilever the fence over the entire track.

They started restricting these engines when Bill Elliot qualified by himself at over 212 mph back in the day. In the draft they were pushing almost 220……..and they HAD to lift to keep from spinning out even with the banking.

The cars are too equal, which keeps them together in a bunch, which equates to a hot mess….especially on restarts near the end.

Defensive racing is dangerous by its very nature.

You can claim what you wish. I could also claim to have been chatting tonight with people that are Figure 8 drivers and track owners. I am sorry to burst the bubble, but reality is that crowds love wrecking. A race in which 1 driver pulls out ahead and dominates is just boring and leads to cheating speculation.

Bill Eliot is long retired. Racing changed due to his dominance just as it did when Geoff Bodine tried to defy death.

Darn those internal combustion engines! They are just too dangerous. We should have safe electric cars and accidents like this wouldn’t happen! Yes yes I know that electric cars catch fire all the time too but at least they don’t go too fast or too far. Nobody would want to see them race so there would be no fans to be in harms way. Problem solved!

Electric cars may catch on fire but GM put out an App that calls your cell phone and notifys you if your volt is on fire. The problem here is to many folks can be injured by just one 3500 lb car going 200 mph.Harry Reid & Feinstein will have a bill before congress next week demanding that they limit these cars to a 4 cylinder and 100 mph as max speed.

My concern is that this will be another CRISIS that Obummer will promote to the extreme left. Somehow, he will spin this into another freedom that needs to be removed from America. After all, it’s for the children. My heart goes out to the injured at the accident and also to the American public that will suffer as a result of the liberals sticking their nose in the people’s business. It’s a magnet to their control agenda. Just watch.

Exactly Chips1. Since the majority of race fans are white, hard working, responsible, loyal, God-loving, patriotic, Bible reading, gun carrying, freedom loving Americans who substantially contribute to the economy while enjoying their passion for the sport-the current occupier of the White House won’t let this crisis go to waste. The occupier-in-thief, and his ilk, can’t/won’t tolerate race fans having the disposable income to attend NASCAR events for he knows better than us how our hard earned money should be spent. The not-so-great-one will go to sleep tonight with visions of dollar signs dancing in his head dreaming of how he can devise a way to take that money and redistribute it through his entitlement programs.

On a side note, I was at the track the past few days and even with the thousands of people attending the qualifying races, and taking in the various NASCAR activities, everyone was so very nice and polite and not a scrap of trash left laying around the FanZone area or the infield camping area (where the American flag was displayed at the camp sites as far as the eye could see)-unlike after a democrat related event with the occupiers, libs and progs who leave the area looking like a waste management landfill.

Prayers for a quick and complete recovery for those injured fans and for a safe and exciting Daytona 500 NASCAR race tomorrow. GodSpeed

Your post reminds me of the surfing craze in high school. We made sidewalk surfing popular and used metal wheels from our sisters skates. We were really experts and had road rash to prove it. Now look at todays kids. The improvement in skateboards is unreal. The kids are incredible and if they traveled back in time, we would think they were from another planet. That’s progress. We are evolving in the right direction in spite of the liberals attempts to halt the dreams of our future citizens.

without those kids the sport would die out in a matter of years and those kids had to prove themselves to NASCAR, their car owners and their sponsors by racing in other types of cars that don’t have the safety that these cars have and in a lot of cases as much or more power than these cars

Incorrect – this is a bill of goods is sold to people by the “media” who don’t know what they are talking about.

Anybody who is a true racing follower knows that the fans don’t like to see pack racing. They want to see a distinct leader emerge from the 42+ participants, but alas, progressive thinking found its way into another American tradition and “F’ed it up” just like everything they touch.

You people won’t be happy until you see NASCAR running Prius’s on battery power even when a full charge will only get 5 laps with a corresponding fire afterwards.

I’m not the one who’s referred to the “wink and a nudge–you’re good to go” before the Impound Races made THAT kind of CHEATING more difficult. That came from former competitors now broadcasters.
I’m not the one DESIGNING cars that MUST DRAFT so that everybody is just hanging on “waiting for the Big One! THAT was done in RESPONSE TO FAN DEMANDS. You think THE DRIVERS love waiting around to get SMASHED? You think the Owners and Sponsors love Multi-million dollar cars turned to JUNK?
No the FANS don’t LIKE fuel millage races, and seeing their “favorites” go laps down. They want the ILLUSION that “their” driver has a chance to win on the last lap.
It’s DRAMA it’s THEATER, it’s MORALITY PLAY, it’s ALL STAR WRESTLING!
No other Sport has the VICARIOUS identification NASCAR does. People KNOW they can’t play tennis or hoops, but they THINK, “if I had that car, I could drive!”
I LIKE watching Nascar, got to meet the Sadlers whenI preached in Brunswick (Emporia), the Burton boys when I preached in South Boston. When I went to Duke in the 90s the FIRST Question was “Who do you root for—(UNC, NC.State, Wake, Duke) 2nd question was “who’s your DRIVER.” I’ve even come to like JUNIOR now that he’s shown class and courage.
But if you are arguing the Good Ole Boys of NASCAR don’t TWEAK what is happening ON the track to GET the Product that keeps the Gravy Train running you are CLINICAL!
And NASCAR fans are NO BETTER than the Roman Mob.

If the fans don’t like it, the drivers hate it, the owners can’t stand it, and the sponsors don’t want to pay for it than WHO is DRIVING it., TSUNAMI? Time Warner? Disney? Harvard?
If there is ONE sport that is driven by and responds instantly to the Market Place it is NASCAR.
NBA players don’t have “Crown Royal” on their headbands.

Or is this a case of the Mythical “‘REAL’ technically savy fan trying to create the illusion of “difference” between them and the Beer Drinkin Bubbas who can’t get ENOUGH of “the big one?”
Euro Grand Prix fans, they are NOT!
I’M the “SICK” ONE? TERRY?? WHO DESIGNED the CARS and THE TRACK and STUCK the DRIVERS in a Situation WHERE IT WAS INEVITABLE, SOONER rather than later, that SOMEONE WOULD BE HURT OR KILLED! WHO DID THAT?
Who made a GOD out of Dale Earnhart “The Intimidator”? WHY was he THAT? BECAUSE HE INTENTIONALLY WRECKED PEOPLE the CHEATING BASTID! And the Fans and NASCAR couldn’t GET enough of it!
So yeah, I REJECT that WHOLE MIND SET, I HOLD IT ACCOUNTABLE and I JUDGE it for the FARCE that it IS. I Judge NASCAR for ENABLING It.
You think I’m wrong, I got a task for you. GET me a COPY of the COMPLETE RULES for NASCAR, Drivers, Cars, EVERYTHING, for the, let’s say “Richmond” Race. Let me know when you can send it to me.

It’s a good thing. Those mullet haircuts are the very people that have come up with a number of the safety features you enjoy and may have survived if you were or ever in an auto accident. They are the ones that are getting more horsepower out of a gallon of gas. All this knowledge is transferred to the auto makers to make your life better. A mullet is not may choice for a haircut but I won’t degrade them. You do it from a distance. Very brave and witty of you.
