Teachers Apologize for ‘Humiliating,’ ‘Cruel,’ & ‘Dirty Rotten’ End-of-Year Prank

Teachers Trick Canadian 8th Grade Students into Thinking Theyre Going to Disney World for Graduation

(Photo: Global Toronto)

Teachers at a public school in Windsor, Canada decided to teach a student a lesson for snooping by pulling an elaborate prank on the 8th grade class, telling them they were all going to Disney World for graduation before dashing their hopes several days later.

They reportedly showed the students slide shows of Disney World, passed out pamphlets about the amusement parks, hotels and even an estimate of the (surprisingly affordable) costs.  At just $250 for the entire trip, many of the students thought they’d be able to swing it with their parents.

The students were even told to yell “We’re going to Disney!” in unison. That’s when, according to the Ottawa Citizen, the teachers put up a slide of their real end-of-year celebration destination: a local bowling alley.

One of the teachers reportedly filmed the students’ devastated reactions on her iPad, and showed the clip to at least one other class.

“I have a lot of respect for teachers and what they do, but this was really stupid judgment,” one parent said.  Another added: “When my son told me, it blew me away…that’s bullying, and there should be zero tolerance.”

Here’s more on the story, via ABC7:

The teachers have since apologized and the school has denounced the prank, but the school is staying silent on whether any of the officials involved will be suspended or worse.

While many of the students say they have forgiven their teachers, their parents and commenters on news sites are still calling the prank “cruel,” “humiliating,” and “dirty rotten.”

But at least one mother doesn’t seem quite as outraged as the others.

Penelope Doe, remarked, according to Global Toronto: “I’ve got no problem.  I think it was good.  It was a funny prank.”

What do you think?  Would you be upset if teachers pulled a similar stunt at your child’s school?

The fact that these teachers pulled this prank for so many days makes them jerks! The fact that they showed the video of the student’s let down faces to other classes makes them bullies. The fact that some students were snooping around trying to find clues on their year end trip was not right BUT what student DOESN’T do some “snooping” from time to time?! The teachers could have come up with a better and more adult way of “teaching them a lesson” like taking away their recess or giving extra homework. Not this.

Public sector or unionized, take your pick.
Of course they are not ALL that way, but this type of pre-meditated humiliation can only be borne of an incredible sense of job security and self- justification (I get lifetime employment and benefits, therefore I know what I am doing….)

Oh, and good luck with that “our-youth-no-longer-respects-authority” argument.
These teachers deserve the respect of NO ONE– and children are not stupid.

Still will go with the Thought that it was NOT right what the teachers did. Especially the showing of the reaction to other classes. HOWEVER, When I was in School, LONG time ago, a student would never snoop in a teachers desk. That was grounds for a swift Swat on the **** with the Paddle. Oh, give me a break, a (1) swat never “damaged” a student, except their pride. It also was, IN MY DAY, reinforced, at home, if your parents got told about it from the school. If student do not GIVE respect, it becomes harder for other to Give them respect.
Still a cruel “joke” and an even more cruel “revenge” by showing the reaction to other students. There should be consequences to the Teachers. Fire them, NO. Loss of Pay, Yes. Something in their employment Jacket, YES. Student(s) caught snooping, should also have some consequences. The rest of the class, just got a “hard” lesson in the current “real” world of today’s society.

I honestly can’t tell who is stupider here. The stupid kids get a pass for being stupid kids, but the stupid teachers (as stupid teachers are wont to do) have stupidly crossed some boundaries. The stupid parents were stupid if they legitimately believed anything the stupid teachers told them without investigating, and they are all stupid for being stupid Canadians.

EVERYDAYWOMAN, You hit the nail on the head when you stated that the teachers were bullies. Their behavior shows contempt for the students. It also shows a great deal of immaturity…adults behaving sophomoric by imitating children. I’d pull my child out of that school in a heartbeat.

      Stupid prank – perhaps.

      Bullying?

Please explain to this simple mind here; where the intimidation, punching, slapping, and theft of property that occurs with bullying is in this story.

As a Navy rugrat who attended 21 schools, that at the age of 10 was 3’9″ and #45, I saw a lot of BULLYING. I do not see bullying here.

      Please enlighten me here.

STOIC ONE. I get your point, perhaps there is a better word to describe adults that behave badly. However, what makes this situation heinous is the position of power these teachers hold. This was not an example of peer against peer bullying. This was a clear illustration of “abuse of power”. These teachers, who ought to know better, behaved like bullies. They crushed a bunch of little kids. Wow! I guess they “proved” THEY were more powerful. …..

Not all bullying is of a physical nature. Some would say that intimidation and ridicule by a person that one should be able to trust, is worse.

I’m of a theory that many of the people that go into the field of high school teaching want to be 16 forever. They don’t want to grow up, thus engineer their lives to stay in high school. Parents, keep your mind and eyes peeled at the next teacher’s meeting, is that teacher an adult, or just an emotionally stunted older cheer leading Captian?
I don’t think parents should tell children that high school is the best years of their lives. That’s depressing.

Were you in the habit of playing pranks on people under you or your bosses? Maybe hand out fake pink slips on a Fri. before a holiday? That’s a real barrel of laughs. My response to you concerned your assumption of fake outrage at this but enjoying watching similar things on TV. It wouldn’t have been so bad had it been confined to just the presentation and then after the video of Disney, immediately having a shot of the bowling alley and not stretching it out over several days. Suppose some of the parents were already making plans on coming up with the money or anything else dependent upon this trip. I’ll bet they’re laughing.

The only new law I want written is that teachers have to be vetted better. This kind of mentality from a teacher is disgraceful. What she has done is given up her authority and become one of them. Send a note home and let the parents deal with punishment. All she has done here is prove that she is no better than they are. Kids will be kids and pull pranks on their teachers, if a prank is hurtful then punish the child but these kids only wanted to see a silly outing, no big deal. This teacher needs a psych test done on her to see if she is stable enough to be teaching at all. If she wants to be a Hitler then she needs to find a country that of approves of her strictness.

This is a great life lesson for these students. When someone in power tells you that you’ll get something for cheap or for free and you believe them then you are being treated as a fool – and you should realize that.

Once the lazy entitled arrogant American underclass realizes that the US Santa Claus government has lied to them about being able to fund their entitlements in the future THAT will be tragic. The US government is bankrupt and cannot afford the benefits it has promised, while the Low Info Voter is like a gullible child who is foolish and unaware of the bigger tragedy that awaits…

Why do you think jokes, practical joking and horseplay are not allowed in most work places? Is it because someone doesn’t have a sense of humor? That someone think everything should be all business and nothing else? No. Noe of these. It’s because there is always one that takes it too far. I was the manager at a company that moved heavy equipment. We had two tractor trailer rigs, two drivers and support staff. I, like everyone else enjoyed the camaraderie of the occasional harmless practical joke or prank. I was even guilty of perpetrating some of my own. Then one day it happened. One of the drivers had heard that if you reverse the air lines going to the truck to the trailer that it would cause the trailer brakes to not release. The victim would become quite frustrated as to why he can’t get his truck to move. This worked in 90% of truck/trailer combinations, but not this one. The driver left the yard with the trailer brakes free. He came to the first intersection and found he had no trailer brakes. He had already made a pre-trip inspection that morning and they were working OK. The entire truck, trailer and 30,000 lb load slid through the 4 way intersection. Luckily the other vehicles swerved from his path and were not hit. That was the day I wrote the memo, NO MORE PRACTICAL JOKES! Termination of employment will result. Did this teacher endanger lives? No. But, did he go to far with his practical joke? I think yes. Disciplinary action? Of course not. I think he learned.
