What You Had to Say: Columbine Survivor Pens Open Letter to Obama

What You Had to Say: Columbine Survivor Pens Open Letter to Obama

AP

Columbine shooting survivor Evan Todd this week released an open letter to President Barack Obama picking apart gun control proposals point-by-point.

“I personally witnessed two fellow students murder twelve of my classmates and one teacher,” Todd wrote. “The assault weapons ban did not deter these two murderers, nor did the other thirty-something laws that they broke.”

The letter lit up TheBlaze comments. Here’s what some of you had to say:

TURKEY13
Does anyone remember Prohibition – it was Congress that created that monster. Thugs like Al Capone got rich. Police and politicians got rich taking bribes to turn their heads and look the other way, Police chiefs got rewards to inform if a raid was to take place. If the bill by Boxer goes through we will have a whole new lawless enterprise develop Guns will be bootlegged in from Canada and Mexico like booze was during Prohibition Guns will come in shipping containers like drugs do now.

MYPTOFVU
Nice letter but a waste of time. Obama doesn’t care about saving any American lives. He will do what he always does and pander to those who elect Democrats. Look at the Border issue. Extremely dangerous criminals are aloud to freely come into the US, endanger the citizenry and for what? Just so the Dems have a few more votes. Note: I am not referring to all illegals just the drug gang, sex slave, assassin types. I now live in a safe area of AZ but a stretch of road I used to take all the time (Hwy 8) is now considered to be the most dangerous place in the Country. Good going Obama and ilk. If you happen to have the misfortune of your car breaking down there you are likely to be murdered for whatever possessions you may have on you or kidnapped and held for ransom. This is not some bad neighborhood that you shouldn’t be driving in but a beautiful stretch of highway in the open desert.

REALAMERICAN2
Gun laws won’t change the criminal behavior in people. Criminals will remain criminal and will access guns as they always have and commit crimes, while law-abiding people will follow the rule of the law(s) and find themselves unable to protect themselves.

EOFA
Clearly it’s the inanimate guns doing all the horrible things to each other. Yes ban all the guns, that makes all the sense in the world. No I don’t think I need to take responsibility for myself or others around me. Please take away any blunt or sharp objects too. Me being a sane person, who has respect for other human life, might get a bit mad and stab people.

I laugh when I read stories like this “calling out” Obama. Does everyone realize that even if he did try to pass a law, it would get “shot” down instantly my congress? So… we blame him for not doing anything? You tell me exactly how it would work and I’ll listen. Also, Obama has “talked” about gun laws but not once, NOT ONCE, has he ever tried putting something into law. It would never go anywhere in legislation and everyone anti-gun would hate him even more because he wasn’t able to make it happen. And all the pro-gun people would be outraged as usual, “He gonna tek r gunnns!”

Who’s got some positive solutions that would actually work? I know I don’t but I’d rather hear solutions then just someone, in pure American style, complaining about everything.

MISSOURI MULE
When a horrible, evil event like Columbine or Virginia Tech happens we wonder why some survive while others perish with no obvious discrimination. A ten year old Jewish boy living in Romania was deported to the concentration camps in about 1940. Somehow, some way he survived, grew up, moved to America and became an aerospace engineer. He lived a successful life as a university professor. He continued teaching long after he could have retired. On April 16, 2007 he left his wife and walked to work at Virginia Tech. That day he fought pure evil at the door of his classroom. He gave his life but saved 23 students in his class room. Now we know why a ten year old boy survived the Holocaust.
Writing a letter may seem small in comparison, but each must do the task that is presented to us. Today, with your letter you are a hero too.

ANGELSOFT
There is no argument for having a gun especially in a public place. How stupid would it be to arm quote the supposed good people (no such thing) because anyone at anytime could decide to snap. By no means would I EVER want my children attending a school where the teacher, principle, counselor, nurse, janitor, school bus driver, because basically you’d have to arm everyone professional in the school. That is the dumbest crap I’ve ever heard I’d rather take my chances with someone having a back ground check than none at all. The same money you would waste by ARMING the school with weapons you could spend on detectors or some other form of protection like police. The only people who find this ridiculousness statement appealing are gun totters. Guns have the tendancy to give quote GOOD PEOPLE balls

This isn’t about Guns. IT’S about OBAMA Control of PEOPLE.
Then HE is FREE to be as Illegal and Lawless as HE choses without any Restraints being
place on him by a US Government he has nothing but Contempt for and shows it routinely.

I couldn’t agree more. This administration is all about turning this country into a socialist controlled society filled with criminals that only care about power & control. If they succeed in destroying the US then the world will self destruct and we will never recover.
I believe you could classify a societal collapse world wide as the end of times like this song says “The End Times” http://www.reverbnation.com/play_now/song_10381143
      What else would call it?

At least you understand that Obama doesn’t care a whit about what the American people want. He is a Marxist with a George Soros agenda backing him. What else do the people need to know about what this President is doing to destroy America’s ability to resist the BIG TAKE OVER?

Sometimes I think that we are more “dumbed-down” than I first thought.

We cannot afford to provide specialized armed guards to each of 220,000 schools in the U.S.

It is a good probability that the guard will not be at the right place at the right time. Uniformed guards are an early target.

Teachers should not be “required to carry guns.” But if a teacher obtains a permit for the appropriate state, which includes training and a background check they should be encouraged to carry.

Guns Free Zones are islands of innocents. Get rid of them.

Teachers who choose to carry have the same responsibility that any handgun carrier has, to maintain control of the gun at all times.

To the comment, I say “AMEN”. As long as a teacher is licensed to carry and the school provides advanced training so teachers can both act responsibility and mesh with police responders to an incident, I am all for it!!!!

EOFA had comments that President Obama could not get bills through congress. Well guess what, come 2014 there will be an election for all house members and one third of the senate members. We just better hope that the democrats do not get control of both houses. We citizens of the USA will lose so many rights that normally wouldn’t happen, but right now there is a campaign going on to get all the bills that Obama and the democrats want. All I can say is to keep this in mind when you vote in 2014. God Bless America and keep her free.

The local paper today had an AP story about all the terrible lies the NRA is spreading about Obama’s “gun control” plans and how he has no plans to register, confiscate, or anything remotely like that. What the progresso-commies at the AP fail to mention is that he’s been for registration and confiscation in the past, and that skunk doesn’t change his stripe he just hides it until he thinks it’s safe to show.

    Dear Mr. President:

We are counting on your benevolence. We need your leadership. We are helpless, uneducated and broke. We are unemployed. Many of us have voted dozens of times for you. Send free, non-taxable money to us. Confer with Professor Bernanke. You can do it Mr. President. Do not let convention, laws of nature, established economic truths or common sense infringe on your march to totalitarianism. Put wage and price controls on food and energy as you have with medical care. Further enlist the press to disseminate “your truth”. We are weak and feeble minded Mr. President, we need your demogogary. We do not have much longer Mr. President so maximize the climax for us.

Angelsoft is an idiot. First starts out with making a statement that there are no such thing as good people and nobody should be able to have a gun on school property. Then goes on to say that they would never have their kids in a school that allowed teachers to have guns but rather they should spend that money on other methods of safety such as metal detectors or police. Wait police, don’t they carry guns and didn’t this person just claim there are no such thing as good people? This is absolutely a ignorant liberal speaking talking points. Because one thing I have learned in my 43 years is that you are far more likely have someone that has been given power (politicians, police or other authority figures) to abuse their power than to have some random criminal attack and kill you.

The only way you can protect your kids from people like this is with superior fire power. ANGELSOFT you clearly have lost faith in humanity for you think in quote “supposed good people (no such thing)”. when i was in school in the philippines we had armed security guard at every entrance because kid were getting kid nap left and right. i have never felt safer then having armed security guards or facility members being armed. oh yes the kidnappings stop after security guards shot 3 kid nappers in front of the school. now i live here in the great place we so called AMERICA i have served in the military for 6 years and defended this great country of ours. you should not be so quick to judge the morality of humans for most of us we have good intent and as long as there are humans we will always encounter evil doers, it is up to us to protect our next generation of children. i grew up around armed guards and guns, grew up just fine and defended your freedom for 6 years.

Well as a mental health professional I would like to tell him/her they do not decide to snap they just do but there are a lot of signals are presented first. That said with over 300 million in this great country the odds of someone “snapping” and having a gun is about the same as winning the lottery,

Article II, Section 4 of the Constitution says, “The President, Vice President and all civil Officers of the United States, shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors.” Are any of those acts “Treason, Bribery, or other High Crimes and Misdemeanors?” Well, that’s up to the members of the House of Representatives. According to Constitutional Lawyers, “High Crimes and Misdemeanors” are (1) REAL CRIMINALITY — BREAKING A LAW; (2) ABUSES OF POWER; (3) “VIOLATION of PUBLIC TRUST” as defined by Alexander Hamilton in the Federalist Papers. In 1970, then Representative Gerald R. Ford defined impeachable offenses as “whatever a majority of the House of Representatives considers it to be at a given moment in history.” An excellent definition, Mr. Former President. In the past, Congress has issued Articles of Impeachment for acts in three general categories:
1.Exceeding the constitutional bounds of the powers of the office.
2.Behavior grossly incompatible with the proper function and purpose of the office.
3.Employing the power of the office for an improper purpose or for personal gain

Does your thinking apply to police officers as well? NO, I didn’t think so. So your comment makes you a hypocrite. No doubt, if you were in the situation of being shot, and if you say you would not want a gun to defend yourself and/or save your life, then you are one of the government SHEEPLE loons that conservatives are talking about. You argument against guns is stupid to say the least and dangerous to society as a whole. If you want a gun free society, move to Australia and rid the US of your stupidity.

Question for @Anglesoft…Why is it you are okay with Police being armed but not the others you mentioned. What is so special about a Policeman? Are they born differently than others that makes them more qualified to operate a specific tool (in this case gun) You have never stopped to ask yourself that question and now you will reply with a snap that it is their training. Okay, do you know how much training they get with a firearm before they are allowed to carry it? What if you found out it was only approx. 20 hours of training, could not a school super or someone else easily take the same course? Or are the Police somehow still in your mind elevated to the stature of Sainthood that it is only they that can properly utilize a simple tool that in the past children use to learn how to operate at a very young age.
