‘By All Means, Leave’: The Amazingly Blunt Response One State Rep. Gave a Citizen Who Wrote Him Opposing Concealed Carry in Schools

Wyoming state Representative Hans Hunt told one resident, “by all means, leave.”
Get out of here.
That was one Wyoming state representative’s message to a resident who contacted him recently stating her opposition to a bill that would have allowed people with concealed carry permits to carry guns in public schools, colleges and sporting events.
Rev. Audette Fulbright had emailed all state legislators, including Republican Rep. Hans Hunt, earlier this month to say she and her husband had just moved to Wyoming and were “seriously reconsidering” their decision amid the proposed expansion of gun laws.
“Ample evidence has shown that schools and guns do not mix, and in particular, guns in the hands of amateurs/non-professionals is extremely dangerous, especially in any highly-charged situation,” Fulbright wrote. “To expose our children to greater risk in their schools by encouraging more guns on campuses is something that we cannot allow.”
Fulbright also said she was concerned about “the profoundly serious dangers of fracking” and said the question of whether to leave was “wrenching to all of us.”
“I know of other new-to-Wyoming families in similar contemplation. Your choices matter. It would be sad to see an exodus of educated, childrearing age adults from Wyoming as a result of poor lawmaking,” she wrote.
Hunt’s response? “By all means, leave.”
“I’ll be blunt,” he wrote back. “If you don’t like the political atmosphere of Wyoming, then by all means, leave. We, who have been here a very long time (I am proudly 4th generation) are quite proud of our independent heritage.”
Fulbright is not one of Hunt’s constituents, but he was one of just two lawmakers who responded to her letter. The other, state Rep. Mary Throne (D), said the bill had moved to committee and to contact committee members. It has since been shot down by legislators.
Fulbright told the Casper Star-Tribune her family moved from Virginia in July to have access to better schools and a beautiful environment.
“Apparently I have to live here a certain amount of time before I have an opinion,” she told the newspaper.
Hunt, who was the youngest member of the Wyoming legislature when he was elected in 2010 didn’t back down from his response.
“Was it blunt? Yes. Would I apologize? No,” Hunt told the Star-Tribune. He said later: “If I had to do it again, would I sit and think about how to phrase my words more carefully? Probably.”
Read the full correspondence below:
Fulbright’s email:
Dear Representative,
I hope you are taking care of yourself during this busy session. I know it is a challenging, compressed time.
I am writing to express my grave concern about House Bill 105. Ample evidence has shown that schools and guns do not mix, and in particular, guns in the hands of amateurs/non-professionals is extremely dangerous, especially in any highly-charged situation. to expose our children to greater risk in their schools by encouraging more guns on campuses is something that we cannot allow.
My husband and I moved to Wyoming not too long ago. We believed it was a good place to raise children. With the recent and reactive expansion of gun laws and the profoundly serious dangers of fracking, we find we are seriously reconsidering our decision, which is wrenching to all of us. However, the safety of our family must come first. We are waiting to see what the legislature does this session. I know of other new-to-Wyoming families in similar contemplation. Your choices matter. It would be sad to see an exodus of educated, childrearing age adults from Wyoming as a result of poor lawmaking.
sincerely,
Rev. Audette Fulbright
Hunt’s response:
Rev. Fulbright,
I’ll be blunt. If you don’t like the political atmosphere of Wyoming, then by all means, leave. We, who have been here a very long time (I am proudly 4th generation) are quite proud of our independent heritage. I don’t expect a “mass exodus” from our state just because we’re standing up for our rights. As to your comments on fracking, I would point out that you’re basing your statement on “dangers” that have not been scientifically founded or proved as of yet.
It offends me to no end when liberal out-of-staters such as yourself move into Wyoming, trying to get away from where they came from, and then pompously demand that Wyoming conform to their way of thinking. We are, and will continue to be, a state which stands a head above the rest in terms of economic security. Our ability to do that is, in large part, to our “live and let live” mentality when it comes to allowing economic development, and limiting government oversight. So, to conclude, if you’re so worried about what our legislature is working on, then go back home.
Sincerely,
Hans Hunt
Representative Hans Hunt

See Oregon, WA and other states who have seen a hue influx of people from California. I agree with that Rep, she should go back to Virginia where liberal philosophy can reign.

I’m going to send a copy of this article to my representatives in the Utah congress and my governor so they can learn how you handle radical minority lefty loons who move to our states because of our lower then average unemployment and job creation due to our conservative government; but the first thing they want to do is change our ways to match the liberal Crap hole they came here to get away from???
Go figure!! Is the epitome of insanity! Keep making the same mistake over and over… Alinsky tactics, the small minority change the system by making themselves appear as a majority. We have them here in Utah and they’re pocking and prodding to change our system.. So beware specially of Californians!!! The gays, environmentalist, atheist, pro abortion, illegals have been flooding our state and are starting to change our demographics. I look at states like California and New York where the conservatives who had put up with the liberal BS for years – have finally reevaluated and up and left. They did not need a state politician to tell them it was not the right State for them to reside. Damned liberals want to control everything and everybody (and their wallets), while consistently proving they are incapable of trust.

Posted on February 24, 2013 at 4:12pm@50CALGUNNER: You said “Legislators in Texas take note. This guys letter should be the welcome to Texas or any conservative state.”
This is a serious problem in our state (Texas). California’s population shrank by 1.1 million productive citizens from the mid 1990s to 2010, exactly for the reason that people were fleeing the top down marxist politics there. Texas received 1/4 of all those who emigrated from California—MORE than our fair share. But the reasons are obvious: a conservative business friendly environment. The problem of course is that the state’s politics have grown progressively (no pun intended) more liberal over the past 10 years, and in a few more years, democrats may outnumber republicans in Texas. If that happens, all the things that built and nurtured prosperity here will vanish, JUST like it vanished in California.
If you want a concise explanation of what happened in California, and IS GOING TO HAPPEN in Texas and other states, Wyoming included, read this article: http://www.weeklystandard.com/articles/decline-and-fall_662233.html?page=1

Posted on February 24, 2013 at 6:18pmThis has been on my mind for a while. The government was set up so the people living within a state can govern themselves and not be burdened by a distant government. This used to work well because states were small and the government kept to that ideal. However, states became larger as we moved west, the federal government is aquiring more and more powers over the states it’s hard to find somewhere to live that’s free from a tyranical rule. Now, a lot of our youth are headed to the cities because it’s hip and lively and when they actually need a job they head back to conservative states and track in the hippy liberal crap they picked up.
Now, I’m trying to find a place to live because I need a change in pace but the problem is the only states that aren’t completely liberalized have horrible weather. I don’t know what it is with conservatives but we seem to be gluttons for punishment.

Having just read the story of your response to a newly “emigrated” family to your beautiful state I want to comment.
I am not a citizen of your great state; however I do live north of you in Montana. I hope that you do not attempt to lighten your words or back down from your previous statements. There are too many politicians who determine their daily messages by which way the political wind is blowing.
If you have an opportunity to Visit THEBLAZE.COM you might get an idea of what many people think of your response to the afore mentioned family. It seems a veiled threat in how she presented her opinions as “WE’ to include others who may or may not exist. I’m sure there are others who might feel as here but would not create the exodus she maintains would occur if you did not kowtow to her requests. Those requests I’m sure were actually demands. This is how it starts then expands into other areas as time goes on. I am an ex-Coloradoan who watched his state become “Californianized”. I left Colorado when I could no longer feel that it represented me. In that same respect the antagonist can always go back to the place she left. I truly wonder why, knowing freedom loving people of your state have openly made statements about the 2nd amendment and how their lives are closely intertwined to that and ALL amendments to and for the Constitution,…

I’ve lived in Wyoming and it’s not bad. Cheyenne is 45 minutes from Fort Collins and 90 mins from Denver so you have access to more populous areas if there’s something Wyoming doesn’t have which isn’t uncommon given it’s rather small population. Eastern Nebraska is a real good option for conservative/decent size population.

Utah is about 63% Mormon, and they hold a lot of seats in government. They are community minded and survivalists. They aslo have a history of standing against the government when it tries to intrude upon their business.
However as for the non-Mormon folks I have heard rhumors that it can be hard to get a job if you aren’t a part of the church. I’m retired so I don’t know for sure, but I’ll tell you this is the best decision I have ever made! Every sherrif in Utah save one signed a letter to Obama stating that they would not support Unconstitutional gun control. That one sherrif is the sherrif of Salt Lake County, the state’s liberal stronghold. I live hundreds of miles south of there and folks around here are pretty conservative. It would seem that outside of the Salt Lake area the LDS Church keeps the liberals at bay…

Figure this one out:
“Penis” is not censored out, but,
“vajhina”, when spelled correctly, is.

Posted on February 24, 2013 at 6:22pm@RJJinGadsden, you are correct, we need as many of his mindset as we can get, and in as many places as we can put them.
@Ditto, and Darmok……….guess I will have to get better at reading between the asterisks.

Posted on February 24, 2013 at 2:07pmNO, NO, NO! We don’t want her back here in Virginia. A rev., Ha! You know what she stands for. Certainly not freedom! The commies love science, until studies agrees with us. I know she is not from the southwest part of this “Beautiful State, Where We Have Safe Schools, And The Animals Are Under Control.” Here, the police will tell a citizen to, “Buy A Gun” if they feel their lives are in danger. Imagine a cop telling a citizen that in NYS? I was born and raised here in Virginia. In the 1950′s, this entire state was “Conservative.” The communists have now taken control of Northern Virginia. They come from all across the country for “Guvment Jobs”; and then move to Virginia. They must wet their pants when they see a citizen walking around with a pistol on his/her waist. We can do that here; and you don’t need “A Permit “(Permission) to purchase a handgun/rifle/shotgun, etc. These freaks would love to take over my state. But, that ain’t gonna happen! Too many good “Ole Boys” down here. We love God, Country, and “The Bible.” We are witnessing a lot of blacks retiring from their jobs up north, and returning to the south. They can either assimilate, or go back to their real homes in, New York, Chicago, Massachusetts, etc. You have to respect this Wyoming lawmaker, given the number of spineless cowards we have in this Nation!

Posted on February 24, 2013 at 12:19pmChildren aren’t free. They depend on the love of their parents to provide them love, food, clothes, shelter, doctor’s visits, education etc. Parents can’t promise their children lives without worry or suffering. So why would an adult ever want to be dependent on a politician for their food, clothes, shelter, healthcare, education etc., I am pretty sure like a parent, the politician can’t promise its citizens a life without worry or suffering, and unlike a parent who loves their children everyday. The politician only “loves” the citizen on election day. Freedom and Responsibility are Inseparable!

Posted on February 24, 2013 at 8:39pmI think you’re wrong. Rep. Hunt appears to love his state, and the opinions of most of his constituents.
There are some pol’s who are in office to do what’s right for the people, not just for the cushy gov’t job.
