‘By All Means, Leave’: The Amazingly Blunt Response One State Rep. Gave a Citizen Who Wrote Him Opposing Concealed Carry in Schools

Amazingly Blunt Response Wyoming State Rep. Hans Hunt Gave a Citizen Who Wrote Him Opposing Concealed Carry in Schools

Wyoming state Representative Hans Hunt told one resident, “by all means, leave.”

Get out of here.

That was one Wyoming state representative’s message to a resident who contacted him recently stating her opposition to a bill that would have allowed people with concealed carry permits to carry guns in public schools, colleges and sporting events.

Rev. Audette Fulbright had emailed all state legislators, including Republican Rep. Hans Hunt, earlier this month to say she and her husband had just moved to Wyoming and were “seriously reconsidering” their decision amid the proposed expansion of gun laws.

“Ample evidence has shown that schools and guns do not mix, and in particular, guns in the hands of amateurs/non-professionals is extremely dangerous, especially in any highly-charged situation,” Fulbright wrote. “To expose our children to greater risk in their schools by encouraging more guns on campuses is something that we cannot allow.”

Fulbright also said she was concerned about “the profoundly serious dangers of fracking” and said the question of whether to leave was “wrenching to all of us.”

“I know of other new-to-Wyoming families in similar contemplation. Your choices matter. It would be sad to see an exodus of educated, childrearing age adults from Wyoming as a result of poor lawmaking,” she wrote.

Hunt’s response? “By all means, leave.”

“I’ll be blunt,” he wrote back. “If you don’t like the political atmosphere of Wyoming, then by all means, leave. We, who have been here a very long time (I am proudly 4th generation) are quite proud of our independent heritage.”

Fulbright is not one of Hunt’s constituents, but he was one of just two lawmakers who responded to her letter. The other, state Rep. Mary Throne (D), said the bill had moved to committee and to contact committee members. It has since been shot down by legislators.

Fulbright told the Casper Star-Tribune her family moved from Virginia in July to have access to better schools and a beautiful environment.

“Apparently I have to live here a certain amount of time before I have an opinion,” she told the newspaper.

Hunt, who was the youngest member of the Wyoming legislature when he was elected in 2010 didn’t back down from his response.

“Was it blunt? Yes. Would I apologize? No,” Hunt told the Star-Tribune. He said later: “If I had to do it again, would I sit and think about how to phrase my words more carefully? Probably.”

Fulbright’s email:

Dear Representative,

I hope you are taking care of yourself during this busy session. I know it is a challenging, compressed time.

I am writing to express my grave concern about House Bill 105. Ample evidence has shown that schools and guns do not mix, and in particular, guns in the hands of amateurs/non-professionals is extremely dangerous, especially in any highly-charged situation. to expose our children to greater risk in their schools by encouraging more guns on campuses is something that we cannot allow.

My husband and I moved to Wyoming not too long ago. We believed it was a good place to raise children. With the recent and reactive expansion of gun laws and the profoundly serious dangers of fracking, we find we are seriously reconsidering our decision, which is wrenching to all of us. However, the safety of our family must come first. We are waiting to see what the legislature does this session. I know of other new-to-Wyoming families in similar contemplation. Your choices matter. It would be sad to see an exodus of educated, childrearing age adults from Wyoming as a result of poor lawmaking.

sincerely,

Rev. Audette Fulbright

Hunt’s response:

Rev. Fulbright,

I’ll be blunt. If you don’t like the political atmosphere of Wyoming, then by all means, leave. We, who have been here a very long time (I am proudly 4th generation) are quite proud of our independent heritage. I don’t expect a “mass exodus” from our state just because we’re standing up for our rights. As to your comments on fracking, I would point out that you’re basing your statement on “dangers” that have not been scientifically founded or proved as of yet.

It offends me to no end when liberal out-of-staters such as yourself move into Wyoming, trying to get away from where they came from, and then pompously demand that Wyoming conform to their way of thinking. We are, and will continue to be, a state which stands a head above the rest in terms of economic security. Our ability to do that is, in large part, to our “live and let live” mentality when it comes to allowing economic development, and limiting government oversight. So, to conclude, if you’re so worried about what our legislature is working on, then go back home.

Sincerely,

Hans Hunt

Representative Hans Hunt

I wish we had reps like him here in NC to combat the Liberal elites who move from up North and retire here, just so they can tell us how things are so much better where they came from. After listening to one loudmouth recently, I said “we’ll, bless your heart, we’ll miss you when you move back home!”

Some of them also move down here for work and then complain about how much better it was in the North.

I wish for two things 1) that Hans Hunt is never cowed into conforming, and 2) that Mr. Hunt has a long political career speaking logic to emotion.

Please read all the way through before replying. Thank you.

I consider myself to be somewhat liberal and maybe even a little progressive.

That said, while I personally don’t approve of the idea of allowing anyone other than law enforcement to carry a gun while on school grounds or a college campus; I wouldn’t be stupid enough to move to a conservative state where such ideas are likely to be and/or currently are being entertained and then write a letter to the representatives that were voted into office before I got there and make a thinly veiled threat (which doubled as an even more thinly veiled insult to the rest of the state population) claiming that I would leave, along with other families that recently moved there, if that legislature that I didn’t approve of went through. That’s just plain stupid.

I feel that what Rep. Hunt did was perfectly alright.

    Maybe I’m just odd.

Ah Yes The Unitarian Universalists. The Rev. Fulbright is the new Reverend at the UU church. The Godless Humanist church, safe haven for Gays and Lesbians, the stronghold of Feminists and the think tank of the Hippies of the sixties bringing about Social Justice, Political Correctness and Equality for all. This should not be called or legally be a church since there is no God worshiped or involved other than the God of Communism. If you see War Protesters or any kind of Liberal protest it was organized at this so called church. Wyoming and other states should consider enacting some kind of State Immigration Policy. The Liberals are coming. They have already taken over resort towns in the west and moving in droves from California. They will take what you have. That is their way.

Rep. Hunt is to smart to stay in a state legislature. Send that boy to the US Congress!

As for the lady who wrote the letter: we have a saying here in Texas that I would be happy to Wyoming folks borrow: Don’t let the door hit your backside on the way out.

Truth is the first casualty of political correctness.
It’s so refreshing to hear a politician speak the truth! It’s great to see that some public figures still posses courage. We’re all going to need more of it in the future.

I applaud Rep. Hunt’s reply and he need not apologize for it.

The writer, as with all others who find it objectionable that a representative of our government defends our Constitutional right to bear arms, ought to move to another country rather than another state. There are lots of country’s this writer would feel more comfortable living in where the people have no rights and are ruled by pompous, elitist dictator’s, which she and all liberals, seem to find attractive.

Folks – please get a copy of the book, “Molon Labe” and give it a read. It’s fiction about the (real) Free State Project successfully taking over in Wyoming. I am a long-time WY resident, and a “politcal/economic refugee” from Maryland(istan). I’ve been here 24 years, and I can attest to cheering my way through reading that book.

This is our only hope as a nation. There is no beating back this Progressive evil in the national arena – they control it all: election boards, media, education, and now science and religion too. It must begin at state level. It must, or it is all lost, and we’ll be waiting by the crooked train tracks, hoping for a monthly box of potatoes.

No, Libs, it will NOT be different this time. It will never be different.

There are so many “projects” throughout the nation designed to destroy our liberty and transform us into a third-world dictatorial welfare state so yes, you are right but we have to work daily at the local level as well as state level to eliminate these projects and defend our rights and liberty.

Recent polling finds that 88% (yes 88%!) of households in Wyoming have at least one firearm! We have a VERY low crime/murder rate. Almost non existent gang problems… For her to say “…guns in the hands of amateurs/non-professionals is extremely dangerous..” she is very ignorant and can take her a$$ back to where she came from! I’m not a Wyoming native but I did get here as fast as I could!

Once upon a time, Colorado was one of the bastions of the republican party. In the 90′s Colorado experienced a population boom primarily from states like California. The result is now Colorado votes consistantly in the blue collumn. We now have legalized pot, gay marriage in on the adgenda and there is a real threat to our second amedment rights being proposed. Colorado is turning into a real socialist cesspool. Wyoming is looking pretty good to me about now even though I have lived in Colorado all my life. I applaud Rep. Hunt’s response.
